A Great Collector's Item and Trip Down Memory Lane!.......2006-08-22
I bought this for (myself and) my kids so that I could show them some true clean entertainment from my past. Guess what??? They LOVED IT! My 3 year old asks to watch it almost daily. It shows three separate Bozo shows, including the audience participation. My kids want to know how they can get on the Bozo Show (You KNOW you wanted to be on it too!). I would say, if anything, the only thing I would've changed was to NOT add the computer animated animals between episodes. I think they were trying to modernize the show with these characters, but it loses something along the way. Anyway, I bought episodes 4-5-6 and will probably go back and order the first three. A very cute and entertaining collection from the good ol' days! Hope you enjoy it as much as my kids do (ages 1,3, and 6).
Bizarro Bozo.......2005-12-26
While I do not disparage the "Bozo" of the Boston area, there is only one true Bozo - the late, great Bob Bell. As a kid in the suburbs (far suburbs) of Chicago in the 70s, Bozo, Ray Raynor, and the Son of Svenghoolie were kings to me and my friends. I'm sure the "Bozo" of the Boston area was ok, but there can only be one Bozo Show to me.
Even Dan Castellaneta of the Simpsons said that the character, Krusty the Klown, was modeled after Bob Bell's Bozo in Chicago!
Bozo Show finally available.......2004-03-03
This DVD is a compilation of several of the live action "Bozo the Clown" TV series out of Boston, Massacheusetts, from the 1960's. I, personally, grew up with WGN-TV's Bob Bell as Bozo the Clown out of Chicago, and had no previous experience with Boston's Bozo, Frank Avurch. I was pleasantly surprised.
The basic format is the same -- at "Bozo's Circus" there is an introductory skit or two, followed by a "classic" Bozo cartoon, followed by the Grand Prize Game, ending with another skit. Frank Avurch does an excellent job, with a different cast of characters than I am used to -- The Professor, a combination of magician and mad scientiest, Ruth Carlsson, who juggles, unicycles, and fills in otherwise as needed, Daniel the Lion, who is a talented speed artist, and several others.
The three episodes included on the DVD work well, and are very entertaining, containing some classic clown skits. I have only 1 negative comment. Larry Harmon is working on a new, computer animated series of Bozo cartoons, which is fine. The DVD uses short clips of the computer animation to connect the segments together, where the commercials originally were -- this, too, is fine. What is not fine is superimposing the computer animated characters on top of the live action, on a very frequent basis. This was very distracting. Other than that, the actual audio and video quality was very good, and much better than I was expecting, although a few of the "classic cartoons" were slightly fuzzy at times.
