So who exactly was Deep Throat, that all-important source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein bust open the Watergate scandal? Well, according to this thoroughly funny, keenly smart comedy from director Andrew Fleming (The Craft), it was two sweetly daft teenage girls named Betsy and Arlene. Taking the history and figures from Watergate and running gleefully and sacrilegiously amok, Dick offers up a hilarious what-if scenario that takes the Nixon administration's downfall from grave tragedy to hilarious farce. When Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene (Michelle Williams) run into a shady figure in the stairwell of Arlene's Watergate apartment building, little do they know they've stumbled upon G. Gordon Liddy (Harry Shearer) on the night of the Democratic National Headquarters break-in. Later, on a White House field trip, they wind up meeting with Nixon himself (Dan Hedaya), who, to ensure their silence, decides to make them official White House dog walkers and "secret youth advisors." Of course, Betsy and Arlene soon find out their idol has feet of clay, and ultimately decide to aid "radical muckraking journalists" (and queasy rivals) Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Bernstein (Bruce McCullough) in their investigation. Fleming and cowriter Sheryl Longin's enfolding of the Watergate scandal is extremely clever and inspired, from Arlene's 18-and-a-half-minute declaration of love on Nixon's tape recorder to the Hello Dolly cookies (laced with a certain herbal stimulant) that help bring about the U.S.-Soviet accord. And after all the angsty-serious portraits of Watergate, it's bliss to see the prime players sent up mercilessly; in addition to Shearer, the cast boasts Dave Foley (Erlichman), Jim Breuer (John Dean), Saul Rubinek (Kissinger), and Ana Gasteyer (Rosemary Woods), all in fine form. Hedaya's Nixon, dead-on but never parodic, is an Oscar-worthy comic turn, and Dunst and Williams invest their characters with affection and humor; the success of the film lies in the way these talented actresses make us laugh with Betsy and Arlene, never at them. Don't be put off by the teen sheen on this comedy--it's also for all of us who still remember Watergate even after 25 years, and still love dancing on the scandal's grave. --Mark Englehart
Customer Reviews:
Historic Hilarity.......2007-06-29
This movie is genius!! It should be a companion piece to "All The President's Men." The fact the writers used actual historic people, quotes, and events and tied them into this crazy fictional world of a couple of ditzy girls is the most entertaining art imaginable. Kirsten Dunst is wonderful in everything she's done. This is no exception. This movie also proves (along with "Brokeback Mountain") that Michelle Williams can do anything.
batcall.......2007-06-28
A great name for the second worst president in the history of the US. Funny movie though.
FUN WITH DICK, BETSY AND ARLENE.......2007-03-01
Writer-director Andrew Fleming was already responsible for THREESOME in 1994, a movie about sexuality in college, which deserves to be rediscovered. Now with DICK, Fleming chose the delicate genre of the political satire. But, in order not to reject those of us who didn't read the Woodward-Bernstein book or see Alan J. Pakula's ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, that means a lot of people I suppose, Fleming transplants an unconvincing story of two odd teenagers in the Watergate story.
As I said before, the adventures of Betsy and Arlene in the White House hallways are in my opinion not funny at all however the description of the life in the early seventies and the portraits of President Nixon and his staff are particularly successful. And the scenes involving Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein even quite hilarious. So, all in all, the movie manages to grab your interest and deserves at least a rental. As a former reviewer already pointed it out, the bonus scenes of the DVD in the Blopper department are also very interesting.
A DVD zone flower power.
Funny satire of Watergate.......2006-12-16
This is a very enjoyable movie, though young people might be lost at its many references. My favorite scene must be the one where one of the girls reveal to the other the meaning behind the expression Deep Throat, but there are many other great scenes, like when the girls first stumble upon the white house tapes, and reveal to them a Nixon they didn't know. The ending is also superb. What's great about this movie is the overall humor that was sorely missing in "All the President's Men" and "Nixon": in this film, Woodward and Bernstein are as much objects of ridicule as Nixon and Kissinger.
Did somebody get their chocolate in your peanut butter?.......2006-10-09
Well, since retired FBI agent Mark Felt "came out" as the real Deep Throat in the summer of 2005 this quirky comedy has become dated. It's a pity, because I was really holding out hope that Deep Throat would be two teenaged girls.
This movie is a must see for political junkies and fans of Saturday Night Live type humor. To me it's great if only to see Henry Kissinger explaining his Southeast Asia and Vietnam policy to two teenagers, and to see Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev singing a "cookie" fueled version of Hello Dolly in the Oval Office.
Another highlight is the pretty accurate, if visually assaulting, depiction of how people dressed in the early 1970s -- seen as some as "the decade fashion forgot."
You really do have to have been born at least in the 1960s to get some of the references, like "Did somebody get their chocolate in your peanut butter?" (that was a popular ad campaign for Reese's peanut butter cups in the early 70s) ... but when the tour full of teenagers is more excited about going to McDonald's than the White House -- well, that's pretty timeless (for the 20th Century American youth anyway) comedy.
It's a good movie to rent, watch on cable. Most people probably wouldn't add it to their DVD collection (the DVD shows its age as it is one of those that came out in the late 90s when they offered a full screen and a widescreen version on both sides).

Product Description
Nobody Gets Hurt is a story about a father and son dealing with the son's past of making poor choices. The son's insistence that he's not hurting anybody turns into the realization that there are many people affected by his choices. Ben Turner stars as a teenager having trouble communicating with his father. The father is at the end of his rope trying to convince his son to improve his behavior, but can't get past his own anger and frustration. The intense drama that unfolds delivers a strong message about choices and consequences. The ending definitely gives the viewer something to think about.
Based on the critically acclaimed play by Ted Miller, this story has been used as a part of outreach and substance abuse education programs in schools, group homes, and counseling centers. "I wrote the piece with an unresolved ending specifically to trigger discussion among the students who see the play," Miller said. "It has been very effective."

Highly Entertaining Trash!.......2005-07-07
What an amazing piece of junk cinema this is. This is a classic example of someone not knowing quite what to do with the material. A judicious editor could have turned this into a classic harrowing story of teen angst and social responsibility. Instead it's a schlockfest of horror and some of moments which, in better hands, may have provoked unease and shocked audiences into contemplation of the situations at hand, instead provoke hilarious laughter. This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing, but I don't think it was an intentional choice.
Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed "Animal Room" for all the wrong reasons.
Matthew Lillard gives what is quite probably his best performance, and it's wasted here. But it's still worth watching. As another review stated, "we all know young men like him" but Lillard pulls it off with a sincere creepiness and unrelenting
Neil Patrick Harris' as Arnie breaks out of Dougie Houser mode, and although he professes resistance to being part of this group experiment of social misfits, he otherwise acquiesces to his plight and it's difficult to feel any empathy towards to a character who constantly reminds everyone who much more brilliant, witty and crafty he is than everyone around him. Of course, were this to be remotely true, there wouldn't have been a movie.
As Arnie's old best friend, Gary, Gabriel Olds turns in a shiny, performance as the golden boy who wants to help Arnie get back on track. His performance, even as good and genuine as it is, can't help but provoke more laughter so out of place is it here.
It's also fun to see Catherine Hicks relieved of "7th Heaven" goodness as a creepy, alcoholic Mom who can't seem to keep her hands off an uncomfortable young Gary.
Again, there was a good idea here, but it wasn't developed. To start with the premise is completely unbelievable - not farfetched or impossible, which is acceptable in the right hands, but simply unbelievable. It's difficult to move beyond that. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed "Animal Room" - but then again, I'm a misfit!
Alex DeLarge would have been ashamed.......2004-11-25
this movie stands out in my mind only because of how bad it was. the front said "alarming echoes of a clockwork orange". note that this did not come from a critic but the makers of the film themselves. it was amusing to watch doogie howser roll a joint and drop out, but his performance as the painfully introverted nerd does not generate any sympathy. neil patrick harris is not all that bad an actor, and his mediocre acting in this film proves just how little heart he had in it. matthew lillard as the ultimate "droog" doug van housen was just corny. he's like the terminal "spookykid" from high school who likes to dress strangely, beat people up, and compare himself to satan. who hasn't met someone like this? the violence and "sexual content" are nothing to worry about, since at no point are they realistic. the futuristic element of the film is nothing but a dr. strangelove looking screen talking to the troubled youths as they sit in what seems permanent detention. i'm guessing this one went straight to video.
alex delarge would have b**tchslapped them all.
Eye opening Movie.......2003-11-19
This is not the type of movie I usually watch. I found it to be an eye opening adventure in the minds of troubled teens. I thought Matt Lillard did a great job-his character really scared me. I also though Ryan Payne Bell did a great job. How come we don't see more of this actor? He did a great job playing the bad boy. Overall rating of this movie - 3 stars.

Product Description
This DVD explores the drug and sex education in the 40' and 50's through a
variety of films targeting the youth of the day and educating them about why
drugs are bad for you and proper behavior with the opposite sex. The films
show that the danger of trying new things (i.e. recreational drugs and
recreational sexual fondling) is that youth does not know the boundaries and
something like smoking pot can lead to hard core drug abuse or hot "petting"
can lead to an unplanned pregnancy. Seen from today's more sophisticated
times, these films offer a quite simplistic but quite frank look at these
topics and the lessons they teach, although seemingly outdated by today'
standards, are still quite valuable.
Here are all the films that make up this historical collection:
Drug Addiction (1951) - Run time: 21:02 min;
The Terrible Truth (1951) - Run time: 10:03 min;
Junior Prom (1946) - Run time: 20:16 min;
What to Do on a Date (1950) - Run time: 10:45 min;
How Much Affection? (1958) - Run time: 19:48 min;
Molly Grows Up (1953) - Run time: 14:20 min;
Are You Popular? (1947) -Run time: 9:52 min;
Toward Emotional Maturity (1954) - Run time: 10:14 min;
