With Sideways, Paul Giamatti (American Splendor, Storytelling) has become an unlikely but engaging romantic lead. Struggling novelist and wine connoisseur Miles (Giamatti) takes his best friend Jack (Thomas Haden Church, Wings) on a wine-tasting tour of California vineyards for a kind of extended bachelor party. Almost immediately, Jack's insatiable need to sow some wild oats before his marriage leads them into double-dates with a rambunctious wine pourer (Sandra Oh, Under the Tuscan Sun) and a recently divorced waitress (Virginia Madsen, The Hot Spot)--and Miles discovers a little hope that he hasn't let himself feel in a long time. Sideways is a modest but finely tuned film; with gentle compassion, it explores the failures, struggles, and lowered expectations of mid-life. Giamatti makes regret and self-loathing sympathetic, almost sweet. From the director of Election and About Schmidt. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Please go away..........2007-07-03

First of all, this was the best movie of 2005. Secondly, if you rated this film at one star you have no taste in good movies. Thirdly, as one of the better scripts out there, the writing was amazing. I think way too many people did not understand the richness that the actors created...I felt like an observer into real life...this film was beautifully done and I think that a film like this comes out once every few years that is highly underrated and happens to be a masterpiece...Go review Triple xXx again if you cannot properly fathom quality greatness when it's right in front of your face. Oh how the masses line up like sheep to the slaughter... "Please sir can I have some more?"

1 out of 5 stars Zero stars - what an unfunny boring over-rated whiney dog.......2007-06-24

I was suckered into watching part of this crappy loser downer dog - what a waste of time. I like wine and being 73 and lived in Nor Cal for 45 years - I've tasted, drunk, tossed out - way more than my share of CA and global wines. When I find a keeper I buy 10-12 cases. This is not a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Too Depressing for me!.......2007-06-15

I like to give multiple stars to movies I would watch again. The other day I thought about watching "Sideways" for a second time, and I thought to myself, "..no, its too depressing!" I'll get to why in a minute.

The acting was excellent. I don't see the genius that others find in Paul Giamatti, except as perhaps, a modern Woody Allen, the world's greatest "sad sack." But Giamatti doesn't have Woody's comedy genius - so I'll have to revise what I just said - Paul Giamatti is the world's greatest sad sack. Tom Church played a man with absolutley no redeeming characteristics, except perhaps that he has befriended the worlds greatest sad sack.

I thought Virginia Madsen was very good until the scene where she describes her romantic interest in wine. Then, like other reviewers, I thought she was amazing. In this movie, I think wine is a metahpor for what can be cheap, pompous and superficial. Wine experts are usually just trying to impress other people with cheap, self-serving superficiality. But then "Maya" gives us an honest and genuine assessment, reminding us that there is decency and honesty, even in the world of wine.

"Sideways" very effectively portrayed lives that seemed to be going nowhere but sideways. And this is the reason, despite all the funny things that happen in this movie, why I think its sad. The character development in "Sideways" is excellent. As I got to know the characters, I began to emphathize with them, so I began to feel bad about the miserable lives they are leading. Worst of all, was life so miserable for Madsen's magnificent "Maya" character that she would find comfort in Giamatti's miserable "Miles" character? Ouch. And the young woman who actually believed everything she heard from the Tom Church character. Oh well. (pun intended). Basically, these to guys are complete losers. But because I felt I knew them, I cared for them, and thus, in between the humor, it was painful to watch.

One day, I may watch it again for the humor, which had its momements, like when giamatti takes the monster hit from the dregs bucket, or Tom Church walking around with the bandage on his nose (which seemed to advertise, I am a loser, a complete loser), or the two people having sex while Giamatti re-steals Church's wallet. But I'll wait a while.

One star for Virginia Madsen's acting, one star for Giamatti's dance with the dregs bucket, one star for Church's nose bandage, and another star for Virginia Madsen's face.

4 out of 5 stars The movie title alone, takes two hours to say.......2007-07-05

Before 'Scary Movie' the Wayans Brothers made this movie, 'Don't Be a Menace'. It is a spoof on movies like 'Boyz N the Hood' and 'Menace II Society', two great movies about the hoods in Los Angeles. I saw this movie when it first was released in theaters and now have watched this about 10 or 15 times. There's tons of crude humor, tons of profanity, tons of explicit sexual references and even some mock drug use. Everything you would expect to come out the pen of a Wayans brother. Don't get me wrong, they are talented guys and I enjoy watching their (Shawn and Marlon) show from time to time, but they're not exactly the African-American Woody Allens. However, I do have to give it up for their (sometimes witty) jabs at those "Growin' Up in Da Hood" dramas.

There are some genuinely funny moments that I will always like: Bernie Mac's cameo as the black cop who hates anything and anybody black, Suli McCullough as the wheelchair bound Crazy Legs doing his MC Hammer "U Can't Touch This" number, the "Hurry Up and Buy!" scene at the convenience store, Loc Dog (Marlon Wayans) applying for a job at the DMV. There are more very funny gags worth a barrel of laughs, but there are also moments where they simply push the crudeness envelope and deliver a lot more groans than laughs. There's one scene where Ashtray (Shawn Wayans) and Dashiki (Tracey Cherelle Jones) are having foreplay which wasn't all that appealing.

Marlon's character is obnoxious at times. He's another comic actor who sometimes tries too hard to be funny and simply hams it up. Helen Martin ("227") steals the show as the pot-smoking grandmother. You can, maybe, consider this a hit-or-miss comedy. But there are a good enough amount of hits to overshadow the misses. It's still worth watching and has its memorable moments.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-05-12

Somehow a lot of people dont know about this movie, but it is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars DA Funniest S***!!!!!.......2006-07-01

Man dis has got to be da funniest movie I have seen by da Wayan Bros. It kinda goes a lil to far somtimes but dats da funny part. Da movie is basically about a guy named Ashtre who goes back to da hood to live wit his dad who is only about 1 year or 2 years older and from there da crudeness begins. Da movie is extremely hilarious it mostly makes fun of movies such as "Menace II Society", "South Central" etc. u know gang banger movies. U will have a lot of laughs wen u watch so watch it right away!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Laughs @ Tha Hoods Expense.......2006-02-23

This is a great parody of all the hood movies that came out in the early 90's. "Don't Be a Menace" throws laughs at Hood Flicks such as "Juice", "Menace To Society", & "Boyz In Da Hood". So if u haven't seen those movies, you might not understand a lot of the comedy in this....but if u have seen em, check this out!

5 out of 5 stars MAN I'LL SUCK YA D!CK MAN!.......2006-01-02

The funniest and crudest movie i have ever seen. If you have a sense of humor get this movie. This is by FAR the funniest movie i have ever seen. Its all basically about a man named Ashtre, who goes back to the hood to live with his father (who is younger than him in maturity.)
The movie has so many funny parts mocking the hood. In one party scene is shows three black men with their pants down and their boxers showing (making fun of the way people these days wear their pants so low.)
My favorite part of the movie is when a cracked-up man goes to Marlon Wayans and asks for money. When marlon (Loco) says no, the man replies "Man, ill suck ya dick man. Then you see Loco and the man go behind a truck and loco come out and zipper his pants up.
The movie is hysterical. You would definitely enjoy if you enjoyed movies such as:
-The scary movie series
-Dude, wheres my car?
-white chicks
-half baked
-beavis and butthead do america\

and many more!!

Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood wants desperately to be an Airplane-like parody of inner-city African American gangsta movies. Instead, it offers us more turkey than we would find at any Thanksgiving spread. Unfunny, stereotypical, stupid, and crass, it was cowritten by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, both of whom should have known better. The two fare better as actors than writers, as they are almost amusing as hardened, dimwitted homeboys. As Ashtray, Shawn returns to his 'hood and hooks up with his best buddy (Marlon) before the two embark on a series of oh-so-wacky adventures. Siblings Keenen Ivory, Kim, and Craig Wayans also make appearances. If you really want a laugh, watch Booty Call. --Rochelle O'Gorman

you people need to calm down and just loosen up this movie is hilarious. if you would just watch it and not think about anything and just enjoy it youll see the greatness of it. full of non-stop laughs

4 out of 5 stars It made me laugh.......2006-09-05

I don't really understand the negative reviews that i'm seeing of this movie, Don't Be A Menace... is what it is, and that is a parody of all the early 90's hood films (of which I am a big fan of). It's like the people knocking it haven't actually seen the films they're taking the p*ss out of, if you've seen Boyz N The Hood and Menace II Society and you have a sense of humour you'll probably find this funny. Some have criticised the lack of a plot but they are completely missing the point, it's a parody of several films, therefore it cuts from scenes of different films, i mean the plot is always going to be secondary to the jokes. I would say though in order to really enjoy this film you MUST have seen at least Boyz N The Hood & Menace II Society as most of the jokes come from these films.

If you are a fan of the Wayans brothers other films you should know what to expect and enjoy this, Shawn & Marlon are excellent as Ashtray & Loc Dog and I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I would go through scenes that I found funny but I don't want to spoil it for anyone whose not watched the film, but I highly recommend it to all fans of the wayans brothers and all those 90's hood movies.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood.......2006-01-17

This movie is definately one of the funniest movies ive ever seen. The jokes are lame, yes but that doesnt make the movie stupid. The jokes are so stupid, that it makes the movie hilarious. Like the part when the grandma is smoking weed, that part was funny. This movie isnt necessarily funny, its stupid funny. But its hilarious. Every part, from beggining to end. I recommend this movie to any who loves comedy, and likes these actors. Its definately worth the watch. Its real funny.

5 out of 5 stars Str8 up laughter!.......2005-12-04

The Wayans Brothers * in one phunny movie that I remembered watching when I was at least 5 years old, now I'm 15 and still enjoying it! Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood imitates and makes fun of Hood movies such as Boys In Tha Hood, Menace II Society, Poetic Justice, Juice & Above The Rim. Don't Be A Menace shows the humors of life in South Central, Watts, Compton & Inglewood, CA. I just enjoy this movie, and I wish there was another Hood Comedys that would be imitating Get Rich Or Die Trying, but the media would h8 that! To bad Marlon & Shawn Wayans thinks that this movie is bigoted & offensive to society, when they're the ones getting played, not payed! There is a lot of 40 Ounce drinkin', Chronic smokin', Gat tattin', Drive By Shootings, Ol' Grandma smokin' on a Fatty? White Geek holding up a 2-1-1 in a Asian Liuor Store? and did I forget the Back yard Parties!? Good Movie, 5/5 stars all the way!

4 out of 5 stars Textbook story of gambling addiction.......2007-05-07

I will admit I am an Altman fan and a recovering compulisve gambler,so I feel capable of disccusing the theme of this film. It shows Gould and Segal's lives runing from bet to bet and paying the price along the way. It is not a sympathetic look at the world of gambling and has the usual Altman reperatory cast members and style to it. The ending isn't typical of gamblers real life stories, but this is Hollywood and it may have been the ending that the studio wanted. Both actors make their characters real to the viewer and it has a fun feel to it, even though it is not a comedy. It didn't reach a large audience, I feel because it didn't glamorize a topic that has so many ruined lives which makes it that much better. If you can find it, watch it, it is well done and gives you pause when you hear someone say, What goes on in Vegas etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great early Altman film . . ........2006-11-21

Segal and Gould are a decidedly odd pairing in this 1970s movie about gamblers and gambling set in Los Angeles and Reno. Mostly amiable and larky with brief outbursts of violence (a fist fight, an armed robbery), the film takes a sobering turn when we realize that one of the two men is in seriously deep debt to a loan shark. Quirky and off-kilter, the film includes two call-girls, whose clients include a cross dresser.

Compulsive gambling (the kind that sends people to Gamblers Anonymous) permeates the film, which takes us to poker palaces, backroom card games, horse races, boxing matches and the neighborhood basketball court. Eventually, our characters wind up at a Nevada casino. While the conventional gambling story at the time followed the moral guidelines of an earlier Hollywood era, i.e., a downward spiral of loss and failure, this film has other things on its mind, and the ending that it works toward is unexpected.

Altman was experimenting with overlapping dialogue and multiple microphones on set with this film, and the complexity of the soundtrack is a treat for the ears. As in everyday life, we overhear snatches of other people's conversations on the sidelines. Meanwhile, a lounge singer we hear accompanying scenes early in the film appears later on, in person, when the two gamblers arrive at the casino in Reno.

Altman, Segal, Gould and writer Joseph Walsh gather to provide the film's commentary for the DVD edition of this film. Their memories aren't so reliable after 30 years, but we learn how the film was shot in sequence with a degree of improvisation (the drunken attempt to remember the names of the seven dwarves), which allowed for elaboration of the original script and greater character development. We also learn that the apparently improvisational one-handed piccolo player scene was actually scripted, as well as about Gould's reluctance to play it. Still terrific after these many years, the film remains a pleasure to watch again and again.

1 out of 5 stars Lowlife Time.......2006-09-20

If you want to spend 105 minutes with several lowlifes, this movie is for you. No one has any class; a thoroughly seedy atmosphere. You can feel degraded merely by watching it. A big flaw is the lack of motivation for the change in attitude, at the end of the movie, of the George Segal character. At least Gould is as obnoxious as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Not at the Top of My List of Altman's 70's Classics.......2006-06-19

I am a fan of SOME of Altman's work. Like many film fans I think SOME of Altman's 1970's films are as good as cinema gets.

McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, and Three Women are among my own personal favorite films of the 1970's.

I've been waiting a long time to see California Split and perhaps the long wait contributed to high expectations for when I finally saw this film my reaction was in the "so what" category.

California Split (though I was very excited to finally see this long unavailable film) is not a great film. It's not a misfire though and it is worth seeing for Altman fans like me who want to see every Altman film. And, I would add, the film will appeal to fans of gambling/grifter/confidence man films but there is nothing in the film to recommend it to a larger audience. Like everything Altman did in the 70's it is full of quirky oddball characters and conversations and the pleasure of all of these films is that Altman films have an atmosphere of anything goes and he is never looking to stress the usual things that movies stress, but always on the lookout for the offbeat note which in turns can be light or dark or a bit of both. A perfect example of this is the scene between George Seagal and the teenage prostitute which goes from vaudeville funny to just plain sad. Most directors would have been satisfied using the scene as a bit of comic relief but Altman is never content with just a funny interlude and Altman allows the scene to evolve into a much more complex comment on not just his male lead character's life but the minor female character's life as well. You can see the advantage of Altman's flexible plotting strategy here as he has the ability to pursue alternative plot lines and/or examine things from multiple perspectives. Altman does this incredibly well and perhaps with greater effect in Nashville but for Altman fans who enjoy seeing a film maker make discoveries while shooting I think this is one of those interesting moments that make the film worthwhile.

Altman is certainly the champion of the marginal character and the marginal community. I think what appeals to me about many of Altman's 70's films are not just the quirky lead characters but the fact that those quirky leads are surrounded by an entire cast of quirky alternative players that often are just as interesting as the leads. What makes some of Altmans films so great is the way those quirky major and minor players play off each other and there are few film makers who can simulate real-life sociability as well as Altman. Some of Altman's films rely on large casts (as far as star power goes) and some small but all of Altman's films are ensemble pieces. The problem with some of Altman's ensemble pieces is that they just feel cluttered and chaotic(Brewster McCloud, Buffalo Bill and the Wild West Show, The Wedding). Another pitfall of ensemble pieces is that each one is a gamble because each one hinges on the ability of the cast to play off each other in a spontaneous way but you really cannot construct spontaneity nor predict what kind of results you will get. Thus some of Altmans "spontaneous" scenes work and some of these scenes feel like tiresome acting class moments (or failed SNL skits that never pay off). California Split has a lot of those scenes that don't seem to have any pay off.

Of course the pay off in an Altman film is when all of the various elements that Altman has thrown together (characters, scene, atmosphere, music, multiple perspectives/plot lines/realites, overlapping conversations)all come together and coherently blend into something that transcends the sum of all of those parts. For me this happened in MASH, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Nashville, and to a lesser extent in Long Goodbye and Three Women. For my money California Split is not an unqualified hit but it never altogether misses either. It is worth a gamble because it has all of those elements Altman fans love (including risk) BUT there are far fewer moments when all of those elements work together as in some of Altman's other more tightly structured work thus the film feels uneven. Some film fans find that uneveness so often found in Altman's projects to be one of the appeals as if this uneveness is proof of authenticity. I can understand that view and share it to a certain extent. This film follows the logic, if not always the coherence, of a short story as its not so much about a character but about a type of obsession and the behavior associated with that type of obsession. Old Hollywood films used to galmourize gangsters and gamblers obsessiveness (and early 70's cinema was doing the same) but Altman, to his credit, never glamourizes. There is no real character development here and thus no real plotting is necessary and the film ends as many short stories end: with a brief epiphany, a pretty small pay off.

It is not just that this film is not tightly plotted (for that too is one thing Altman fans may value as a point of originality instead of a liability) rather my minor disappointment with this film is due to the fact that the lead and minor characters are not that interesting ultimately and thus the interaction we get is not that interesting (save for a few scenes like the ablve mentioned scene between Seagal and prostitute). The characters are not fully fleshed out nor are the atmospheres they find themselves in fully realized or explored. I think a lot of the background and support characters (the prostitutes, the bartender at the poker match as well as the other players at the casino poker table, and the Jeff Goldbloom character) could have been given more to say and do. Also Gould here is not the clever countercultural figure and team player that he was in MASH, nor is he the interesting counter-countercultural detective and smitten sap that he was in Long Goodbye, here he is just a kind of one-man-show that tries (albeit unsuccessfully) to bring a straight-man into his act. Therefore my lack of enthusiasm for this film is based not on whether the film works or doesn't but just on my lack of enthusiasm for these characters which for me were too thin to carry my interest through an entire film. The final scene of the film in which Seagal's "Bill" finally sees Gould's "Charlie" for what he is, I think, sounds this same sentiment. The film attempts to answer the question, "can you make an interesting film about hollow characters?" I think for those who think that you can then you may find this film intriguing.

Worth seeing but only after you have seen Nashville, MASH, McCabe and Mrs Miller, Long Goodbye, Three Women. California Split succeeds but just in a much humbler way than some of the other Altman films of this period.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars would be 4 1/2 stars with missing scenes back in.......2006-06-02

I have really liked this movie for years, but this version is missing some scenes, and I mourn the loss. As I recall from seeing the longer version many years ago, we are missing: more Segal/Goldblum interaction at the magazine office, more gambling scenes during the winning streak (certainly some of the blackjack scenes are gone), and most importantly for me, the great repartee between Gould and the piano lady when Gould has no money to gamble but isn't allowed to watch Segal during the winning streak. In particular, I remember the piano lady saying something like, "Hey, where's my tip jar?" and we assume that Gould took it half-jokingly (and returned it?) as he tries to get some money to gamble. He needs money and not just the Milky Way bar he tries to bet. This is still a Top 250 personal favorite movie (as are several other Altman movies like M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller), but without the deleted scenes, I doubt I will feel compelled to watch California Split again for another few years.

Most people dont know their basic constitutional rights, and those who do usually waive them in the face of police intimidation. Worse, police rely on peoples fear and ignorance of the law to trick them into waiving their rights, which often lands them in jail. Thats why Flex Your Rights (FyR) -- a Washington, DC-based educational group -- created BUSTED: The Citizens Guide to Surviving Police Encounters. This fun 45-minute educational DVD realistically depicts three common police scenarios -- traffic stop, street stop, and home entry. Narrator Ira Glasser, a former ACLU executive director, shows you how to avoid cops gotcha games as they try to trick you into waiving your rights; how to be courteous but not intimidated by police tactics; and how phrases such as I dont consent to any searches can keep you out of jail. BUSTED was made for anyone whos afraid that their looks or lifestyle makes them a target for law enforcement. This includes skaters, smokers, rockers, and freedom-loving people of all sorts.
