From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

A Classic.......2007-07-06
As always disney has done wonders for childrens films. The little mermaid is another one of their classic movies which is suitable for all ages.
One of the last great Disney Movies.......2007-05-28
Mermaid was one of Disney's last great movies.....before they started trying to spin each classic tale into a 2nd, 3rd movie....each meaningless money making machines.
The Little Mermaid is the Disney version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Disney brings it to life with the beautiful Ariel, and a whole cast of loveable characters- Flounder, Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, Skuttle.
Ariel, the youngest of many daughters is bored with life under water and want to explore life on land as a human. She see's a man aboard a boat and falls in love. His name is Eric. When a storm rages, Ariel saves Eric and leaves his ashore. He sees her and can't forget her face. Against her fathers wishes Ariel dreams of life on land. She bargains with the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human. The price she pays is her voice. She has to make Eric fall in love with her- but she has no voice.
Ursula uses Ariels voice to bring her father to her knees. In the end, she is overcome, and Triton- Ariels father is saved, and let's Ariel go- to become a human.
The music is some of the most creative animated music EVER. From Kiss the girl to Under the Sea, each songs is singable, and unforgettable. Boy and girls alike will love this movie about dreams, courage, and adventure.

Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in the sequel to Disney's landmark The Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose," Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mom has to take to the sea again to help.
As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, The Little Mermaid II looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four- to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet, where Beauty and the Beast had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel, and Pocahontas told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is very forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa, and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. --Doug Thomas

Little Mermaid - perfect gift!.......2007-04-02
Ordered the VHS for my Nephew for Christmas. He was so excited, as he loves the original Little Mermaid.
Story is a nice continuation of the first (for kids).

I was very very happy with this product/it is a wonderful addition to my Disney movie collection!
Thank you
It's Probably What you Expect -- An In-Depth Review (SPOILER).......2007-03-07
"The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". Well, just by looking at that title, it's not exactly difficult to tell what sort of sequel it will be. Not just, "The Little Mermaid II", but they added a little hint for you: RETURN TO -- as in, a rerun of -- THE SEA.
Therefore, it's what you would expect from Disney. First off -- technicalities. They've taken some shortcuts and used CAPS animation, so it lacks that old-fashioned Disney look from the original Little Mermaid and the "classics". It doesn't look too bad or too cheesy, though. The colors are only a tiny bit more neon than before, and it's only a bit overly-smoothed. It's not as bad as many would make it seem.
The voices are, with the exception of Eric, kept, and they sound great. My only pet peeve is Melody's voice. Technically, I am YOUNGER than the character, and much younger than her voice actress Tara Strong, but I solemnly promise that I do not sound that much like a hyperactive six-year-old. But, really, what can you expect from the voice of Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls?
The story, if you haven't gathered it yet, is simple: Ariel is grown up. Eric is grown up. They've had a baby girl named Melody, who inherits her mother's contempt of boundaries. Apparently, Ursula the Sea Witch has a younger sister named Morgana, who conveniently shows up at Melody's christening (Sleeping Beauty, anyone?). She attempts to ransom Melody for King Triton's trident, fails, and is (sort of) banished from the kingdom. Ariel decides it's too dangerous for Melody to know anything about the world of merpeople -- including King Triton, Melody's grandfather -- and hides it from her daughter.
It might be nice to mention here that only King Triton or his ancestors/descendents can remove the triton from its holster-like thingie, which is where it is stored when not in his hands.
Melody, however, longs to go in the sea or even be a mermaid (though is not sure they even exist.) When she finds a mysterious golden seashell "locket" -- which, in perfect Disney fashion, is roughly four or five times the size of a normal locket, to get the point across to the younger audiences -- she has an angsty teenage fit at her mother, Ariel, and makes up her mind to run away. Or, technically, rows away in an absolutely tiny rowboat.
Morgana seizes the chance to use a descendent of King Triton, lures Melody into her trust by using Ursula's bottled magic (?) to transform her into a mermaid, and weepily convinces Melody to "recover [her] lost trident". Melody, not knowing any better and only wanting to "belong" as a mermaid, captures the trident with the help of a talkative penguin, "Tip", and a blubbery walrus, "Dash".
Of course, Ariel and Eric are frantic during all of this, searching here on the land AND sea (coincidentally the name of the finale song), which, in effect, causes Ariel to be turned into a mermaid for the purpose of searching underwater for her daughter. If you think about it, Ariel is acting as a sort of tour guide through the original film: her grotto and "Under the Sea" rock are featured during a little musical "duet" she sings with Melody.
Naturally, Ariel and her re-united pal Flounder arrive at Morgana's lair -- strangely made of ice and above water, as opposed to Ursula's bony underwater lair -- at the exact moment that Melody arrives with the trident. Mother and daughter go through the traditional you're-a-mermaid-deal before Morgana reminds Melody that she is still waiting for her trident. Ariel rebukes this and begs Melody to not give the trident to Morgana. Melody, with a new bargaining chip, rubs it in her mother's face that she never told her about merpeople and -- with a dramatic "too late, Mom!" -- hands over the trident.
The obvious happens: Morgana gains command over all the seas, Melody is locked away with Flounder in a quickly-made ocean prison cell to await the loss of her fins and underwater breathing, King Triton's sea-army and Eric's land-army come to defeat Morgana and fail, and ultimately, Melody escapes with the help of Tip, Dash, and Flounder to reclaim the trident and give it to her newly-reintroduced grandfather, Triton.
It could've stopped there, but didn't. After the climatic battle, the first thing King Triton says to his granddaughter is that he'll give her a choice -- come to Atlantica and live as a mermaid with him, or stay with her mother and father on the land. She invents a new option: break down the (literal) wall between merpeople and human people once and for all. Voila! The End! Complete with an exeptionally good-looking teenage mer-boy and a trident-created rainbow!
Though it took a few cues from it's prequel, it was a pretty entertaining story, once you've sprinkled in a few songs:
"Down to the Sea" -- opening scene, Jodi Benson, mostly. Sweet and catchy. Almost as good as one of the originals.
"For a Moment" -- Tara Strong and Jodi Benson. Beautiful song, period.
"Tip and Dash" -- Tara Strong, Max Casella, and Stephen Furst. I'm sorry to say that this song simply ANNOYED me. It does succeed in getting stuck in your head, however, which may be the point.
"Here on the Land and Sea" -- finale, chorus. This is also a catchy song, though not especially moving. A good, solid, happy-ending song.
Characters...what can I say? Ariel has lost her characterizing feistyness, but, unless you refuse to accept a "new" Ariel, it probably won't bother you. She's more motherly than I thought the teenage Ariel could be, but that makes sense, as she is...oh, thirty- or forty-something now. Eric, I'm sorry to say, was a bit wimpy until he brought out his army. And he was my favorite Disney Prince. Tip and Dash, well, I never felt sorry for them or cheered them on. I didn't really dislike Melody until she started using too much out-of-date slang ("Hey, fellas! What's kickin'?") and was selfish and didn't think about consequences. Sebastian...good ol' Sebastian. He stayed just the same. Same with Scuttle. Flounder, on the other hand, has turned into a beady-eyed, deep-voiced obese yellow-and-blue father fish. Morgana was actually very hateable, and I loved her sharp-witted anchovy of a shark, Undertoe. Her pet stingrays, supposedly a replacement for Flotsam and Jetsam, didn't impress me nor scare me. What was really scary about them? They just laughed in this hissy way reminiscint of a toddler or a bat.
Overall, however cynical I may have been, it is a good -- not excellent, but very good -- sequel to the original. It's less epic than the first, certainly, but as the original was based on a long-known fairytale and Return to the Sea was based on the Disney adaption of the long-known fairytale, it's hard to compare them. Kids won't really care about the little characterization flaws or annoying dialogue, and it is, after all, marketed toward kids.
Excellent movie. .......2007-02-18
This is a good movie. Unlike Ariel Ariel's thirteen year old Melody dreams of being a mermaid like Ariel, dreamed of being human. But in the upcoming Ariel movie,The Little Mermaid 3 ARIEL'S MELODY Ariel is pregnant with Melody at the begining of the movie. How come Melody is thirteen in here? I like this movie and I like the fact that it doesn't have Melody in her late-teens like Ariel was. Melody goes to Morganna{Ursala's sister} with her need{want} like Ariel goes to Ursala. The two movies are a little simualar and both very good. The little Mermaid 2 has quite a few songs in it here are all the ones I can remember: DOWN TO THE SEA, FOR A MOMENT, DIP AND DASH and HERE ON THE LAND AND SEA. ENJOY THIS MOVIE.
P.S THE LITTLE MERMAID 3 IS COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER!
P.P.S I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS MOVIE!
P.P.S.S . I think this is just as good as the first little mermaid one. Hope you do to!
Walt Disney is Rolling Over in his Grave.......2007-02-08
Of course a straight-to-video sequel is not going to be as polished or professional as the orignal, but even my dog could have written a better set of dialogue to go with the plot to Little Mermaid II.
The music stinks. I understand that for straight-to-video movies they aren't going to hire the big guns to come in and compose an Oscar worthy score, but really, a child could have written better music and more imaginative lyrics. Even children aren't going to take the songs seriously, they are that bad.
The wall thing was stupid, Ariel was almost senile wondering around the castle not knowing where the heck her brat is! Flounder is old and fat, and Prince Eric is a drain on society.
Melody is an ungrateful brat and if my daughter were like her, I would smack her silly. There are far better teenage girl role models who do not fit in that are way more pleasant than she is.
Then we also have the cheap token Timon and Pumbaa pair with the penguin and the walrus.
This movie is for Disney to make some quick cash, and for parents to get rid of having their kids underfoot for 75 minutes (though it might not even be good enough to do that)
It might be worth renting if you get severely drunk before watching it.

The Little Mermaid - Based on Hans Christian Andersen's Classic Tale (UAV Corporation).......2007-06-01
My sister found this one and it was a trip down memory lane. The storyline is true to the original fairytale. The graphics are very clear and if you have ever watched The Last Unicorn, you will know what I mean.
The storyline itself requires a kind heart. Marina's songs are soft and hard to hear and the dolphin gets annoying at times with his cries. However, if you have children, they will absolutely love this movie.
If you're a Little Mermaid Disney fan, you might be disappointed, by this simple storyline. This one is for the kids of the eighties.
The Anime Version.......2007-05-18
As all the reviewers have said, this version of "The Little Mermaid" is not some cheesy cartoon. This is the 70's anime version that is based more on the original story then the happy Disney version. The mermaid's name is Marina and her dolphin friend is Fritz. It was great to finally find this movie on DVD. However, I had one problem with it. When the movie first came out, there was some nudity, though it was nothing serious. The mermaids are bra-less. However, in this DVD version, some of the movie appears choppy because they have edited out parts of certain scenes. Having watched the movie about 1000 times when I was a kid, I remember certain scenes to be longer. However, they only cut about 5 total minutes out of the movie and it is still the great animated film that I remember. To summarize: Movie - 5 stars, DVD version - 4 stars
A Little More Effort Please.......2007-04-23
I'm a 27 year old entering that period of nostalgia wherein I begin to desire the things I haven't seen since my youth. Yet time and again my elation at discovering a beloved tale long lost is squelched by disappointment in the cover art. The Secret of Nimh, The Last Unicorn... And this one for The Little Mermaid is the worst yet; it doesn't even _remotely_ resemble the film's protagonist.
Which is particularly absurd because the movie is not for the young audiences the cover is clearly targeted at. At least not for them, only. This version is more true to the tragedy of the original story and does not have the jolly happy end that the cover implies.
The fact that it doesn't appear to include the original Japanese language track cements my decision not to purchase this version. It will be worth the effort to buy an import and play it on my regionless player.
the original story in anime style.......2007-03-25
This is the one I've been looking for on DVD, the one that ends sadly. The picture quality has not been re-mastered for the DVD format; it's the exact same quality that I have on VHS. A few minor scenes were deleted so some transitions are slightly jumpy compared to VHS. But Marina and Fritz are as good as I remember, and the quality is watchable for the cheap price.
Dark Little Mermaid.......2007-03-24
I'm very happy with my order, this was the version I've been looking for! Disc was in great shape, looked new.

The Power of Music and Scripting.......2006-10-03
"The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" met my expectations for a direct-to-video film. It did not exceed them nor did they fall short. The 1989 original THE LITTLE MERMAID is a very formidable film, making the artistic success for a sequel a great challenge. To its credit "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" did unfold in a different direction than I had anticipated. The story was not innovative but some of the particular plot situations were well thought out. In any story you have conflict and resolution and those are the aspects that I liked about this film. Some of the dramatics did rely on prior events, which took place in the original. That was thematically important to the overall story. One weakness of this film was the lack of character development. Character development was one of the strong points of THE LITTLE MERMAID. I watched "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" twice trying to determine if the film digressed in such a way to bolster my contention of this. What did the "The Little Mermaid" achieve in roughly the same amount of time that this film didn't? And then it struck me that it was the music or more specifically the songs in the original that advanced the story line and defined the characters. That was the brilliance of lyricist Howard Ashman. He and composer Alan Menken developed songs in the original that in several minutes clearly defined Ariel's reckless but innocent curiosity about the humans above and her yearning to discover that world. Every song in the original bolstered the characters, advanced the plot or enhanced the significance of a scene in addition to being very melodic and well written. So in THE LITTLE MERMAID we were given a substantial amount of information and entertainment in a minimum amount of time. There is not a single frame of wasted footage in that film. "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" does not have the advantage of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman compositions. The instrumental score is very good but the new songs feel superficial. The animation especially during the underwater scenes is good. Morgana is not as menacing as her sister Ursula was in the original. Other than Ursula I believe all the main characters are back. Melody, Ariel's daughter gets to mingle with the old characters as well as meet new ones. I thought that was significant seeing that the scriptwriters were determined not to have Melody just copy what Ariel did in the original. It would have been a very good sequel for theatrical release. If that was done, there would have been a bigger budget and the various shortcomings could have been corrected. I liked "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" but I did not feel it was as good as Disney's other direct-to-video, "Pocahontas II." However, I believe that "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" will have a definite audience with younger family members and there are actually some nostalgic moments that will no doubt attract teens and up who loved the original. I highly recommend this movie.

Customer Reviews:
Small, short but heartwarming!.......2006-08-09
"It's not the 1979, so I just hate it because I ordered the wrong one!" Urrgh!
This version of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale was produced by Diane Eskenazi and distributed by the unpopular GoodTimes Entertainment studio. "The Little Mermaid" (1992) follows the adventures of a sweet, fun-loving little sea girl named Lena, who after a visit to the above world, falls deeply in love with Prince Stefan. Lena then visits the wicked sea-witch Cassandra, who in exchange for Lena's enchanting voice, gives the little mermaid legs to walk on land, warning her that if Prince Stefan were to marry someone other than her, then would Lena be turned into seafoam for all time. Lena then is able to walk on land and when Prince Stefan meets the girl, he too falls in love, unfortunatelly, trouble comes for Lena when Princess Anna is then pressured by her father to marry Stefan.
Like in many other Disney and GoodTimes films, a few sidekicks are added for comic relief and to add a sense of friendship and companionship into the movie; Bink, the dolphin, is Lena's best friend, but at the same time is an important character in the story. Animation quality does not live up to Disney's standards, being a bit rougher and less realistic, but nothing that would make a child enjoy this any less than a Disney film, after all, this films are meant for children and adults viewing should take that into consideration before bashing it. Music, as in many other GoodTimes releases is one of the strengths in this film. Golden Films (The producers) has always done a good job of selecting music for their films, rather than creating a brand new musical soundtrack, timeless classical pieces are added by some of the best and most famous composers of all time. One lovely, original song is included in the opening and instrumentally reprised later on in the film, that song is called "The World Above" in which the singer steps into Lena's "shoes" and dreams of life by her prince on land.
This film is somewhat hard to find offline, for not many stores carry GoodTimes' line of Collectible Classics. However, finding it online at a price of about $5.95 should be no real challenge. One of the best things about these children's films is that, being so cheap, a small child might just save up to buy them on their own. Overall, memorable and heartwarming Golden Films/GoodTimes fair, I'd recommend it to the very young and the very young at heart.
is NOT the 1979 version.......2004-09-16
For those who thought they were looking for the touching story of a mermaid's ultimate sacrifice, this ain't it! This is the worst animation I've ever seen.
Horrible!.......2003-12-10
( I'm 17 but thissite wouldn't let me review unless I'm a member, I'm not a member my mom is, so I had to resort to putting my review in this way!^-^;)
Ugh! I really did not enjoy this movie at all. Bad animation, really bad acting, did I mention that I didn't like it? The reason why this even got a star is because it did a better job at sticking to the real story ( a lot was still changed though).
Disney's movie is much much better even though it changed the story even more than this movie did and the anime is supposed to be really good too (made in 1979 and is the closest to the original story than the other two are.)
My recommendations: Watch Disney's version, then the anime version(if you can find it), and then read the original story. After that, if you're still curious about this one, go ahead and watch it. You may like it, I don't know cause I'm not you, but I know I didn't like it!
Thanks for lisening to my little rant, hoped it helped you. ^-^
Childhood Memories.......2002-07-31
As some folk have mentioned, this *is* the version from the late seventies/early eighties that may have frightened and enchanted you or your children. It's an honest, heart-wrenching animated film that ends with a glimmer of hope. Far deeper than the Disney version, treat yourself and/or your children to this beautiful and meaningful story.
Its the best.......2000-05-07
This is my favorite re-telling of the Little Mermaid [I've seen 3 diffrent vertions]Leana the little mermaid wants to meet a hansome prince and to the surprise of her talking pet dolphin Binks she does and shes in love prince Stephen so she make a deal with Casandra the sea witch trading her voice for a pair of legs, and meets two birds Cecil and Claudia,then... well see for your self.

All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas

classic? psheah. whatever........2007-01-16
3 stars for being Disney.
Minus 2 for not having Aladdin.
That is all.
NINE WRONG ITEMS.......2006-12-25
I ordered the walt disney animated anthology the classic collector's set which was suppose to come with, the little mermaid, hercules, mulan, pinocchio, the jungle book, peter pan, lady and the tramp, the lion king II:simba's pride and one hundred and one dalmations instead we were sent cars, pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest, the sword in the stone, the rescuers, bedknobs and broomsticks, herbie fully loaded, miracles, and the shaggy dog....very disappointing for the kids christmas morning!
Well priced.......2006-09-25
Despite what other reviewers are saying, this collection is a good buy! Why, price AND collectors value. Each of this dvd's are limitted addition- which DON'T get re-released. And the prices... lets go over them, according to Disney's collectors item list.
The Little Mermaid 29.99
The Jungle Book 34.99
Hercules 34.99
Mulan 34.99
Peter Pan 54.99
Pinocchio 34.99
Lady and the Tramp 34.99
Lion King II 29.99
This adds up to over $270. But the set is retailed for $500, how is this still a good deal? Well disney doesn't sell Peter pan, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp as limitted addition and they are hard to find, these prices are based on (with the excetpion of Peter Pan) what they were last officially sold at. What you find is Special and Platinum addition. Further more in 2007 Hercules and Lion II are expected to come out on Platinum, meaning the Limitted Addition ones will be worth more. Yes, limitted addition doesn't have two discs poor movie, but collector wise, its worth more.
Blockbuster has a more accurate price list for when they by these movies. To buy these BRAND NEW, the cheapest one is The Little Mermaid (not in Limitted but in Special Addition) and that is $50. Other such as Hercules are worth $75. Thats adds up to at least $600. So now, its cheaper.
More so, some of these movies have already been released in platinum, meaining they won't EVER be released again.
This is a good deal, and as you can see the so-called "collectors" who troll it haven't done any research.
For those of you who buy it just to watch it, I suggest buying the cheap platinum additions.
Also, a fact for those angered by a sequel appearing. Lion King II sold better than the orignal Lion King, and better then any other Disney Sequel. In fact, its is one of the top 20 Disney movies that sold well. Seems most Disney "fans" loved this movie (and I find it one of the only good Disney Sequels.)
For any of you wanting to start a Disney Colelction that's sure to make a return on your investment- buy this if you can afford it.
A Comment about the reviewer "A Viewer".......2006-09-04
The older titles are not in widescreen because in the days when they came out in theatres, the theatre screens were not widescreen. So it is observing their original aspect ratio. Maybe you should do some research before you review something.
I do however not understand why Lion King II made it on this set...I hate the disney sequels.
I agree it blows.......2006-06-27
I own all of these movies already and I can honestly tell you this collection is a rip off. They're asking way too much for so few movies. Now, you add a few more classics and make them all 2-disc special editions, then hell yeah I'll pay $500 for it. But this just isn't worth it, collection set or not.

fairytale classic with Shirley Temple.......2006-07-05
"Shirley Temple's Storybook" was a successful television series (that ran in colour on NBC between 1958 and 1961) where Miss Temple hosted and more often than not, starred in, adaptations of fairy tale classics and other works of children's literature. Serving as the precursor to other shows like "Faerie Tale Theatre" and "Tall Tales and Legends", "Shirley Temple's Storybook" boasted a galaxy of stars from stage and screen, elaborate production values and lavish costumes. The series later ran in syndication under the "Shirley Temple Show" title.
In "The Little Mermaid", Shirley Temple stars in the title role. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tender fairytale of selfless love and sacrifice. While living in a kingdom at the bottom of the ocean can be very pretty, the Little Mermaid feels there is something more that life has in store for her. During a brief visit to the surface, she rescues and falls in love with a handsome prince (Donald Harron), and vows to become a human. A bargain with the Merwitch (Nina Foch) is the obvious answer to her dilemma, but will the Little Mermaid risk her very life to become part of the prince's world?...
Shirley Temple brings a lot of depth and feeling to her portrayal of the title role. Legendary actress Cathleen Nesbitt plays dear Granny Mermaid to perfection. With Nancy Kulp, John Hoyt, J. Pat O'Malley, Torin Thatcher, Ray Walston and Francine York. Original air-date 5th March 1961. Adapted from the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale by Bernard C. Schoenfeld.

Appauling.......2006-03-15
Wrong version, was searching for an older version where the little mermaid dies. This is not that version!!!!
Shame on Amazon
Not the real deal!.......2006-02-07
If you sre looking for the Anime style Little mermaid, The one with the sad ending, please note that this is not it! Now I havent seen this film but I'm sure it's fine lust not the one most people are looking for. The origanal in DVD format has a realy stupid cover but some nice person gave a few captures so I am sure that it's the one you're looking for. The cover is mainly blue with a blond haired mermaide who looks nouthing like Merina playing with some fish. The titel on the top of the page reads 'The Little Mermaid (UAV Corporation) (2000)' and if you look at the extra pics someone put up and reed the revews you'll not make the mistake of buying the wrong film. Hope this helps good luch!
Not very pleased........2005-08-27
The movie is quite short, has a happy ending, and an enviromental message. Nothing really seems to pace well, the animation is choppy, and the voices are not what I would call enjoyable. This is more chopped up then the Disney version, and much sappier. I perfer the Little Mermaid (UAV Corporation) version MUCH better, ASIN: B00005QW6Q
Dont' let the crummy box art fool you; the UAV version is a vintage animation with delightful animation and the original ending.
Not what I expected.......2005-07-08
This was one of the first things I ordered through Amazon, and I guess being new I was naive. I was expecting the Disney version and got the Hans Christian Anderson version and there is a world of difference. I felt it was my fault and did not send it back. It came in a timely manner and was in perfect condition.
I didn't recieve the original.......2004-12-06
I bought this because the reviews visible at the time said that this was the original animated version - the one with the sad ending.
The first thing I did when I got the movie was skip to the end to see if it was the right version. It's not. The mermaid and the prince get married, and the king makes a little speech about ending evil pollution.
It's probably a good movie, but I'm so disappointed that it's not the one I was hoping and searching for that I can't bring myself to watch it.

This read-along presentation of Little Mermaid is designed as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, Disney's full-length feature film. The read-along section features a 14-minute narrated synopsis of the basic story in five languages; each with onscreen words accompanied by still action pictures from the Disney movie and very brief song excerpts. The vocabulary portion introduces words like "mermaid" and "crab" in English, German, French, Italian, or Spanish. Sing-along songs with onscreen lyrics include "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Children ages 3 and older will enjoy pursuing Sebastian as he hides beneath ever-moving cups in the game section. Music videos "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World" (featuring Jodi Benson) are sure to appeal to preteen audiences and the Search the Web DVD-ROM and Disney preview sections are of interest to all ages. While the Little Mermaid story is scant on drama in this format, this read-along makes reading fun and constitutes a nice accompaniment to the feature film. --Tami Horiuchi

I Paid Too Much!.......2002-11-18
Maybe if I had paid $10 instead of $18 I would consider this a better buy. Unfortunetly, I paid too much. My 4 1/2 year old daughter is in LOVE with Ariel, so I bought it and was not real pleased. Neither was she. The find Sebastian game was fun for about 3 minutes (she found him every time) and the story is narrated with still pictures from the video. (maybe a different story about Ariel would have been nice) I do think the foreign language part is cute, although a little tough to understand for a 4 year old. All in all, for $10 it's a decent buy...but no more than $10!
The Magic Of The Little Mermaid On Your DVD!.......2002-08-18
DVD READ-ALONG - THE LITTLE MERMAID is a fantastic thing for the kids and adults. It has the complete story of the Hans Christian Anderson story of The Little Mermaid with all the character voices and a great narration by actor Roy Doltrice (TV's Beauty & The beast) It's all the original cast too. Jodi Benson (Ariel) and Buddy Hacket too!
The menus are cleverly put together and the graphics are fun. The extras include music videos with sing-a-long capabilities and words as well. There is a game that you can find Sebastian and a vocabulary section that everyone can learn foreign words. There are even two rock videos of Kiss the Girl and Jodi Benson herself singing Part Of Your World. That is very good.
The best part for me and the kids is the fact you can listen to this story in six different languages. A very cool feature I wish I had as a kid. Our kids today are going to be smart in several different languages. You should get this. It's fun and musical! (8-15-02)
