Date Rape DVD

Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:
Description
Most rapes are not committed by total strangers, but rather by people who are known to the victims. Date rape is a violation of a woman's body that's exacerbated by a violation of her trust. This program explains how a failure to communicate effectively is at the heart of many date rape situations. Young women can learn how to reduce their chances of being victims of date rape and young men can learn how to avoid accusations of date rape. When we acknowledge what date rape is and understand how it occurs, it will happen less often.

Two years before he let it all hang out in Boogie Nights, former rapper and Calvin Klein underwear model Mark Wahlberg played the psychotic boyfriend in this derivative but surprisingly effective thriller, aptly described by producer Brian Grazer as "Fatal Attraction for teens." Reese Witherspoon plays Nicole Walker, the unwitting teenager who gets the hots for David McCall (Wahlberg). David only seems like a nice guy until he gets upset by the girl's overly protective father. That's when hell breaks loose and the love-struck Romeo turns into a deadly threat who just won't go away. You'd think this kind of material would be beneath the talents of a fine director like James Foley (whose credits include At Close Range and Glengarry Glen Ross), but Foley gives the film just the right blend of style and tension to match Wahlberg's breakthrough role as an all-too-believable teenage maniac. You might feel silly afterwards, but don't be surprised if you find yourself getting caught up in the expertly manipulative suspense. --Jeff Shannon

entertainly good.......2007-05-14
I enjoyed the film and was happy to see such qulity of acting.
old glory.......2007-05-07
when watching this really good movie, you realize just how old it is. william petersen for starters just makes you want to watch him as grissom on csi, wahlberg straight off of calvin klein billboards and witherspoon centuries before winning her oscar for walk the line. well worth the watch it keeps you in the whole time.
Exciting, ultraviolent and way over the top.......2007-04-20
Neither Mark Wahlberg, Reese Witherspoon, "CSI" star William Petersen nor "Fraser" girlfriend Amy Brenneman had hit their stride in TV and movies when this 1996 production was released, leaving only Hollywood bad girl Alyssa Milano as a name star in this teen version of "Fatal Attraction" that also mixes some affect from both the original and remake of "Cape Fear".
Wahlberg, who until this time had been known as rapper Mark E. Mark and a pinup underwear model, plays a psycho that matches physical skill with mental aptitude to alternately charm and terrorize high schooler Witherspoon, dad Peterson, and stepmom Brenneman. His role is metaphoric to the role Glenn Close played in "Fatal Attraction" while dad Peterson figures out right away he's a bad guy and warns daughter and wife of his bad deeds to come.
The film travels a predictable path to an apocalyptic closing scene where Wahlberg and his gang of four seek revenge on Peterson, who trashed their home. They come equipped with guns, other weapons and psychic terror to carry out their revenge...only to learn the family lives in an impregnable home. As you may guess, it turns out not to be impregnable after all. The movie closes with many scenes of ultraviolence where the ending is just as predicatable as the rest of the story.
What characterizes this film is its incredible violence. In one scene, a child of about 10 or 12 runs over a bad guy with a car. In another scene, stepmom Brenneman drills a hole through a bad guy's hand with a handheld motorized drill. Another time teen Witherspoon stabs her former boyfriend with a jagged edged piece of wood, leaving a gaping hole in his back. If this isn't enough, there is an animal beheading in the flick.
This is an exciting and involving film but its copycat story and level of violence work against its value as art. While there is a lot of shock value to keep you riveted to the screen, it become increasingly more over the top as it goes on. In that respect it reminded me of the 1979 opus "Fury", where scenes of incredible violence punctuated the final 30 minutes and essentially changed the value of the film.
"Fear", too, is a throwback to 1970s slasher and hate filled movies and operates in the same horizontal plane. It pretends to be a teen version of "Fatal Attraction" with some of the tension of "Cape Fear" but is actually more akin to "The Hills Have Eyes" with violent criminals taking the place of "The Hills'" flesh eating wackos. Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg's psycho has none of the artistry that Robert Mitchum and Robert DeNiro displayed in the original and remade "Cape Fear".
I think it a good idea to show some fear before buying this and bringing it home if you have children under age 17. If you are a teen and/or want a cheap thrill, excitement and violence, this is your cup of tea.
Real Cool!!!!!.......2007-04-10
For some odd reason, just watched this for the first time on TV,a month ago.I am a big fan of Wahlberg and loved it. Purchased the DVD,at a local entertainment store. If you like Wahlberg or any other cast member and a fan of suspense, this is for you. Check it out!!!!!

This ambitious 1995 film by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) doesn't quite succeed at painting the illuminating, collective portrait of college life in the '90s that the director seeks. But Singleton does do a fine job of defining some conflicting impulses for young people on the cusp of adulthood, particularly the desire to broaden horizons on the one hand and circle the wagons with like-minded allies on the other. Students in the film's Columbus University divide themselves along lines of race, sexual preferences, ideology, and, most dangerously, levels of paranoia. Among the fine cast is Michael Rapaport, who portrays a loner drawn to a local community of neo-Nazis. His resultant problems with the school's African-Americans takes over the story at the expense of other, parallel dramas, but Singleton's insights into race hatred on campus--a microcosm of the surrounding culture--is not to be dismissed. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
My 2nd Favorite Movie.......2007-05-24
I'm surprised I hadn't reviewed this movie long ago, especially considering this has been my favorite movie for almost a decade. John Singleton expertly weaves a tale of characters of various races in a tragic situation. You have the white frat guys, the black hip hop headz, the black intellectuals, the nerdish crew, the hippies, the slackers, and the professionals all on one campus. Although various races are intermingled within this movie, the concentration of this film is on black and white, specifically racism that a black man may face on a predominantly white college campus. Being that I dealt with the same thing at the first college I went to, most of these scenes were all too familiar for me, minus the KKK scenes (which I could never prove). I appreciate Singleton for presenting movies from a black man's perspective in an educational environment, especially considering it's so rare, and telling of the struggles that Malik (Omar Epp's character) goes through. From beginning to end, I loved this movie. My favorite scene was when Ice Cube found the Nazis upstairs by the pop machines. I also appreciate Ice Cube's lectures explaining that just because you won the fight does not mean you won the full battle. Right on.
A+.......2007-05-07
Its kind of obvious that this movie scares you s***less because your comments reveal your fear. The premise about a freshman track star that encounters racism on a college campus was a good concept and everybody (Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Rappaport even Tyra Banks)except for Busta Rhymes(everytime I saw him I had to laugh. He's so out of place on here) fit in the movie perfectly. Its unfortunate that most moviegoers are reality dodging cowards like these reviewers that rated it poorly. I saw it as a movie where a brother overcomes adversity(rascism, his own ignorance of his surroundings, a stern professor and losing his girlfriend to racial violence)and becomes successful. You bashed it for obvious reasons(reality). Racism is something you cant dodge like reality so stick to your asinine comedies and your boring energy draining dramas and leave the reviewing to the experts!
Good Concept Horrible Execution.......2007-03-23
There are great lesson in this movie but they are overshadowed by the cartoonish stereotypes used to try and lead the viewer by the hand through all of the mental obstacles. The movie never lets you think about anything because it all so heavy handed and blatent.
I really enjoyed this........2007-03-16
As long as this movie has been out, the purchase of this marks the first time I've watch it. It's really deep, good, and makes you think. I love it!!!

Speak is an unexpected gem. Adapted from the popular novel by Laurie Halse Anderson and first broadcast in 2004, the film features an excellent lead performance by Kristen Stewart (Panic Room) as Melinda Sordino, a deeply troubled teen facing her first year of high school and all its attendant perils, including student cliques (here called "clans," such as "the Marthas--very Connecticut, very prep"), hostile teachers (with the exception of Steve Zahn's art instructor), and so forth. Melinda appears to be just another misfit, alienated, shunned, and sullen ("the most depressed person I've ever known," as one classmate puts it), burdened with clueless, hopelessly self-absorbed parents (Elizabeth Perkins, D.D. Sweeney) and her own introverted nature. But there's much more to it than that, and director Jessica Sharzer, who co-wrote the screenplay, deftly balances flashbacks of the traumatic event that turned Melinda into a virtual mute with her pained attempts to deal with its aftermath; the two stories, past and present, unfold together, keeping us involved all the way to the film's unsettling but cathartic conclusion. Powerful, moving, and well-acted (the adult roles occasionally veer toward stereotype, but the kids' performances are consistently good), Speak is a compelling and admirable piece of work. --Sam Graham
Description
Based on the award winning novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, "Speak" unfolds a story about Melinda (Kristen Stewart), a smart and spirited high school freshman who retreats into self-imposed silence after she is raped one night at a party. Feeling isolated from her classmates and from her preoccupied mother Joyce Sardnino (Elizabeth Perkins), Melinda retreats further in an attempt to escape the torments of high school. It is only through her work in art class with the help of her compassionate art teacher Mr. Freeman (Steve Zahn) that she begins to reach out to others and eventually finds her own voice and inner strength. A feature debut of director/co-writer Jessica Sharzer, "Speak" resonates with stubborn honesty and sardonic humor as we follow Melinda on her journey from traumatized isolation to a brave and final triumphant disclosure.

Speak Movie DVD Comments.......2007-06-27
As expected, some differences do exist between the movie and the novel. However, the creators of the movie well replicate the plot and characters that Anderson forges in her work. I rented a copy of this DVD from a well-known movie rental store. The copy that I rented and the copy that I bought here on Amazon.com showed almost the same type of picture interference. I watched another copy with a student that I assisted in his literature class, and that copy showed no defects. Maybe a "bad batch" of Speak DVDs were made that suffered a similar defect creating the same kind of picture distortions that I saw in those two copies. I'm only giving the item four stars because of those technical problems with the picture on the DVD. The movie itself blossoms with funny, sarcastic humor, realistic performances, and an inspirational story of survival and triumph.
All young girls should see this.......2007-06-09
I have a 13 year old daughter, and I made her watch this movie with me. At first she did not want to, but within the first 20 minutes of the movie she was comletely captivated by the chain of events that had happened to Melinda. I believe that all young girls should see this movie, because it is for one awareness, and another they never think that something like this could happen to them. It is also a good source for victims to see how they can relate and to assist in recovery. Their lives would be devastated but not over. It is a parents responsibility to insure awareness of the evils of the world that is out there.
students iin Middle school and up should watch this video.......2007-05-16
This movie covers many issues and shows just enough of each one so the viewer isn't to overwhelmed. Unfortunately, the main characters situation can happen in real life.
Good for Comparison.......2007-05-13
I bought this DVD to show to my students after they read the novel. It is fairly close to the book, but different enough that the students questions directorial choices. For that reason it is useful. It doesn't have the humor of the book.
This Movie is for Victims of All Ages and Genders........2007-04-13
As another reviewer stated, I cannot stay dry eyed when viewing this movie. Melinda's story may be harder for some people to take than others, particularly if they have been victimized themselves and feel that maybe they are somehow to blame when the immediate aftermath around them is negative.
There is no sugar coating here: One day Melinda (Played with incredible depth and sensitivity by Kristen Stewart.) is a fun-loving teen, and the next she can never look at anything the same way again. I was angry throughout the film because her suppposed friends should have guessed it took more than calling the cops at a party to turn her into a social outcast. In fact, her behavior could have told a very perceptive stranger what was wrong, but nobody noticed except one male student and Steve Zahn's art teacher character Mr. Freeman. Everyone else was cruel and/or indifferent, and that's before they found out what happened to her.
This is the story of one year in the life of a bright young girl after a very troubling incident but, unlike other victims, she didn't keep silent about it for years until her entire life was a complete mess. It is incredibly moving and well-done. If you are having some of the same problems, please don't wait until you have a mountain of trouble ahead of you. Contact the nearest victim's support group or call RAINN toll free at 1-800-656-HOPE.

Eight glossy, good-looking young actors, including Sean Patrick Flanery (Powder, Suicide Kings), Jerry O'Connell (Stand by Me, Scream 2), Amanda Peet (One Fine Day), Tara Reid (American Pie, Urban Legend), and Brad Rowe (Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss). Women in their underwear and short, tight dresses; men in suits. Men's bare buttocks and women's bare breasts (at least in the unrated version). Characters talking earnestly to the audience about blowjobs, domination, anal penetration, one-night stands, and the difference between sex and love. Lots and lots of alcohol consumption in a cavernous, neon-lit club. A bloody fistfight. The plot, to the degree there is one, concerns an accusation of rape, which is shown from his-and-her points of view. People similar to these characters probably do exist in real life, but there's no reason to make a movie about them. Everyone involved in making Body Shots should have to do 100 hours of community service to make up for the time they've stolen from viewers' lives. The script and direction are particularly banal and self-important. Vacuous. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
So very, very bad........2007-05-27
Body Shots (Michael Cristofer, 1999)
This refrain is getting old, so I'm pretty sure you can sing it with me now: this could've been a good movie, but...
Well, okay, I'm not entirely sure this could ever have been a good movie. We'll probably never know, given that the twisted, uncomfortable mess that we got is probably not on anyone's remake slate in the foreseeable future. Nor should it be. While the main story seems to revolve around the question of whether a famous football player (Jerry O'Connell, whose post-Sliders career has just kept going farther and farther down the tubes) raped a party girl (Tara Reid, whose career has never gotten out of those same tubes), the story is no more than a sidelight in the examinations of the lives of eight people whose relationships with one another come to be defined by the alleged event. And it's here that the nugget of that potentially decent film resides; who cares about the plot when you've got interesting characters? And to their credit, Cristofer and screenwriter David McKenna (American History X) do try to make the characters interesting. I have little doubt, actually, that they are interesting, at least to [...] twelve-year-old boys. To anyone out of adolescence, however, they're likely to be boring. There's a minor point of debate to be had as to whether McKenna meant to show these characters as juvenile and emotionally stunted, but there's no evidence that McKenna doesn't see them as mature adults, and it's that evidence that would have gone partway towards making them worthwhile.
But I'm spending far too much time talking about this movie, when I could be doing something more productive. Like reviewing a better movie. Or poking myself in the eye with a sharp stick. Either would be preferable to thinking about this horrible mess of celluloid ever again. * for Ron Livingston's character, the only bright spot in this pathetic movie despite being the stereotype of all stereotypes.
If you can figure out what this film is about you might be alone.......2005-07-02
If "Body Shots" did not start with scenes of a young woman bruised and bleeding, obviously the victim of a sexual assault, the abrupt shift that this 1999 movie takes would have been similar to those who went to see "Million Dollar Baby" thinking it was just a boxing film. Indeed, even having been shown what is going to happen to one of these characters and knowing that we are seeing the events that lead up to the incident it is easy to forget that is what lies ahead in the first half of "Body Shots," which was written by David McKenna ("American History X," "Blow") and directed by Michael Cristofer ("Gia"). That is because the early part of this film involves lots of direct to camera statements by the characters, and then after the pivotal incident the fourth wall is slammed back up in our faces.
The scope of the film is basically 24 hours in the lives of eight young, attractive people trying to live and have sex in L.A. The four women are Jane (Amanda Peet), Sara (Tara Reid), Whitney (Emily Procter), and Emma (Sybil Temchen), and the four men are Rick (Sean Patrick Flanery), Michael (Jerry O'Connell), Trent (Ron Livingston), and Shawn (Brad Rowe). The two quartets meet at a club, engage in heavy drinking and end up pairing up for the night. Jane and Rick seem to be the smartest of the bunch so they end up together, while Sara leaves with Micheal, who plays for the Raiders. The thing is, Sara has been dating Shawn, who responds to this affront by taking Emily out to the alley. That leaves Trent to end up spending the night with Whitney, who turns out to have another side to her sweet disposition.
There is a strong documentary-like element to the first part of the film, where most of the characters get to weigh in on various matters, usually sexual, that are under discussion. This allows us to get lots of views about everything from what constitutes "sex" to whether or not teeth are a good thing to bring into play during a particular endeavor. However, given what is going to happen in this film these exchanges of personal philosophies are not simply an opportunity to run the gamut of viewpoints but an opportunity to judge the characters. This will become critical in trying to make any judgment as to what really happened between Sarah and Michael.
Sara says that she was raped by Michael and he denies it. When he hears the news Trent says he could totally see that happening. What we see is first his version of what happened and then her version of the same events. The obvious cinematic reference point would seem to be to "Rashomon," but "Body Shots" does not get that far. In Akira Kurosawa's film we had three different versions of the same story, each of which revealed something about the character once you established their motive for distorting what happened. Here we have only two versions, the basic "she said/he said" dilemma. But at the end of "Rashomon" we do get the "truth," as the woodcutter confesses he saw what "really" happened, an understanding that allows us to go back and reconsider the other three stories a second time. But "Body Shots" does not get to the "truth" and we do not know what really happened.
This will drive some viewers to distraction, and obviously has. However, it is significant that Jane and Rick, who are the two smart ones, do not have to decided whether they believe Sarah or Michael, because they do not hear both stories. Jane only hears what Sarah has to say, and Rick, as Michael's attorney, only hears his side. But even without hearing the other side, each has to decide whether at face value they believe their friend. The chilling part of this story is that since both sides are believable (Michael is truly amazed and outraged while Sarah is really bruised and bleeding) who we decide to believe could be based entirely on our gender. Guys will believe Michael and women will believe Sarah, and what implications are we to draw from that rather chilling impasse?
Ultimately, the problem with "Body Shots" is not that we are left to construct our own meaning from these events and render our own personal judgment as to whom we believe (with an emphasis on being able to explain why so that there is an actual articulation of reasons as opposed to going on a gut instinct based on gender), but that the approach of the first half of the film contrasts too much with the second. These characters are glib when it comes to talking about sex, but is this just a stylistic approach of the film, a way for the writer to show off with all the outrageous topics and thoughts he can have come out of the mouths of these characters, or is it a lesson in itself? Because if the second part of the film does not teach a clear lesson, perhaps the first half does. Maybe the second part is not the wake up call, maybe it is the first half and that when Sarah assures us that sex is "just sex" she has doomed her character to her fate.
Is it that Tara Reid getting raped is not important? It is!!.......2004-12-28
Well, if you have only watched 10 minutes of this movie, I will just let you know now that Tara Reid driving around in the Mercedes in the rain, with the cut on her forehead claiming to have been raped is about as far as this movie went to describe what happened. If you think you are going to get the answer to this controversial question------GUESS AGAIN.
That's all I have to say, and that the movie drags on and on.
P.S. Tara Reid got me to see the movie because I think she's really great---otherwise I don't think I would have seen it in all actuality.
Thanks,
C
Dream come true.......2004-11-08
The plot? Where? Tara Reid nude? Worth every penny! I recommend for that scene alone!
Interesting Movie..........2004-09-11
I recently saw this film, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. I agree with other postings about the film not catering to the average person. The movie is a fantasy land of super hot women, buff and hot guys and rich yuppies, but what it does touch on are some of the 'issues'-(sex, love, relationships, fitting in, happiness, friends) that are universal to everyone. I do agree with other postings that alcohol abuse and drugs are key themes of this movie too and seem to get overshadowed by the date rape angle. And...Like other so called generation movies, this movie seems to focus on the "hard partying, superficial, yuppyized twenty somethings of the generation, and not the average person. Having lived through my 20's in the Los Angeles Area and having experienced some nights eerily similar to the night portrayed in this movie...I could actually relate. Yes the characters portrayed are shallow, wild, and make insane choices that seem utterly impossible to most people, but what I got out of this movie is kind of what I got out of my experiences with my friends in my 20's when we would hit up the LA Clubs. We too were young, shallow, mis-guided, wild, and desperately trying to figure ourselves out. I think anyone...who hasn't been a complete boyscout or nun all their lives, can at least relate to that.

Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumor for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumor, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other. You'll hate yourself in the morning, but watch it anyway. --Ali Davis

Enjoyable Trash.......2007-03-26
Gossip is far from a masterpiece, but is good, trashy fun, as long as you don't take it very seriously. The film, about some sleazy and wholly unbelievable goings-on at a college, is shot like an advertisement, and has a lot of gorgeous actors and actresses (Kate Hudson, the lovely Lena Headey -it's a pity she's not more famous) and the ending is unconvincing, but if you accept the whole artificiality of the concept, you will enjoy it as much as I did.
This movie is great!!!.......2006-08-31
I loved the cast in this movie, I am huge Kate Hudson fan. What makes the movie great is the moral which is, if the gossip gets too visious, then something like______ could happen 9If i told you what _______ was, then I'd be wrecking the not only the twist, but ironically enough, the moral itself. Worth a glance...
plot holes.......2006-02-14
The first half hour of this 90 minute movie is actually quite good. In fact, it is enthralling and has an interesting twist in that we don't know the real fact behind whether a young woman was violated by her boyfriend while unconscious. According to the rumor (the rumor being a school experiment conducted by three roommates) she was, however, but we the audience don't know that. However, the young woman is quick to think she has been raped. Why there is no attempt at a physical exam, is unexplained, especially since the young woman involved has the reputation of being a professional virgin, however it turns out she isn't, so that's why the movie lasts longer than 30 minutes. Fortunately, we're not dealing with unwanted pregnancies, either, so this doesn't turn into a soap opera. However, we do have the dreamboat "hero" who dreams up the rumor about her being raped, and who exhibits unlikeable traits throughout. But that's true of the three leads - the roommates are all unlikeable, being insufferably full of themselves. The last half of the film, 'dreamboat' takes the turn as lead character, and it's his story we're following, whereas his female roommate had the first half of the film, and basically it's her introduction to the audience of all the characters. Turns out 'dreamboat' and the young woman victim have a history together; which means issues they have to work out, and everyone else (in a way, the entire student body and its faculty and local law enforcement) is sucked into their story and mutual thirst for truth, though the characters don't have the same truth in mind - it's about vengeance; not justice. And vengeance when it's not the comic book variety, isn't fun for an audience, it's just distasteful. In other words, the man and woman should have been shut up together in a room so they could have worked it out for themselves, and left the rest of us alone. So from a brilliant first half-hour - and btw how does the roommate penniless art student have the dollars for all that tech equipment? - we degenerate into a constantly weaving pattern of lies and deceptions that seems more pointless than clever. There is merely too much story, so it becomes ridiculous. A basically good premise is ruined. If you are a fan of any of the stars involved, it might be worth viewing, if only once, but the film as a whole will probably leave a vile taste in your mouth. Perhaps that's the ultimate message on a film about the dangers of spreading GOSSIP, or in this case deliberate lies, is that what goes around comes around, and also it will leave you feeling sick to your stomach. I almost recommend you watch the first 30-45 min then quit midway, but anyone will watch all the way thru at least once, just to be sure where this is headed.
worth seeing, provided..........2006-02-02
First of all, this is not a teenage movie, it is a movie for grown-ups. Teenagers will neither understand nor appreciate this film. The opening scenes are like Dante's circles of hell rather than scenes of a cool place.
Second, fans of Marsden will hate this movie. Marsden plays a bad guy in this. A lot of films recently have a main character who is obnoxious for 85 minutes, then miraculously turns into a good guy. In this movie, the bad buy remains bad throughout. This fact accounts for virtually all of the bad reviews below. Fans wanted Marsden to turn into a good guy. He doesn't. That does not mean the ending is wrong.
For grownups who are not fans, this movie is worth seeing. The main character is the Lena Headey character, who is quite sympathetic. I would have given the movie 4 stars except for one scene in which she gives herself to the Marsden character. This was not only repulsive but seemed out of character. Luckily, only the beginning is shown before the scene cuts. If you can stomach this scene or fast-forward over it, you'll have a four-star movie. (The other scene in which the girl throws up when she tries to have sex with the Marsden character seemed much more appropriate.)
This is a movie about people's beliefs and what happens when people form opinions based on hearsay rather than on evidence. In this case, the hearsay is gossip. In other cases, it's radio and TV talk shows, or magazine and newspaper articles. Relying on the fact that other people have reached the same conclusion is a poor substitute for evidence.
In this story, the victims turn and avenge themselves on the perpetrator. If you prefer to see the bad guys triumph, then this movie is not for you. But for many people, the ending will be most gratifying.
Four stars for four fifths of the film. .......2005-04-23
Great up until the end. Even the end, indeed was very good, huge twist, massive climax; but the writers were blinded by their own prejudices, and wrote it wrong.
Basically, the script was fine, except for who had the lines. If you have the last fifteen minutes of the film, with Derrick and Beau reading each other's lines; the film makes moral and physical sense. It sticks to the point, that gossip is dangerous, and also, bad. And also, you'd have an ironic enlightening enlightenment at the end, what with Cathy and Travis being forced to come forward, and fight through an image of hypocracy that would be forced upon them, due to their actions.
The writers could then have ended the film with a whole righting of wrongs, especially the wrongs of the past. Seeing as the film was largely about digging up the secret past, to discover the truth that is affecting the present, it would have been fitting that the past could have been laid to rest. As the ending currently stands, Cathy and Travis seem to get off scot free, appearing to be angels, while the Truth of the past is still uncertain, as is that of the present, Derrick takes the fall for the second time, although it's not clear if this is or not, simply his second victimisation, and Beau, and Joshua Jackson go unchecked to the finale, maintaining the victim status that, at the outset of the film, is set up to be questioned, due to the character of their characters.
All in all, fantastic characters, fantastic direction, fantastic locations, shots, music, art, fan-bloody-tastic.
But the writers ballsed up the script!!!
Meh, no matter, whenever I watch the film, I just pretend that all the emotion is the same, but that it's all the other way round.
Sort of like watching Cruel Intentions, which is all about INTENTIONS, and feeling cheated when Sebastian gets hit by a car. HIT BY A CAR. WHY OH WHY wasn't he MURDERED? THAT WOULD HAVE MADE SENSE. Murdered by anyone, Kathryn, the black dude, the mother of Cecile. Hit by a car is bloody lame, and pointless, completely devoid of INTENTION of any kind. And that's the way Gossip went.
Anyway, for those of you who don't mind having to stop watching cruel intentions just before Sebastian is killed, you won't mind having to imagine the ending to Gossip in a different way.

Train Ride Is The REAL DEAL!.......2006-08-14
This movie was an excellent tale of the reality happening on college campuses and other venues as well. It is a true eye opener that tugs at the heart and made me very concerned about the lack of morality among this generation and the need for more positive role models. I am going to spread the word because everyone needs to see this movie, especially teens and young adults. There is a great lesson to be learned and I pray that someone will take heed. Carolyn aka Bunny in Philly
Train Ride.......2006-07-09
Everyone should see this movie. Especially if you have young children who are 'growing-up' in this crazy world. It was an eye-opener for me, in fact after watching the movie, I had this feeling of concern. Concerned if my nieces and God Children and friend's kids are actually aware of what is happening out there, just by hanging out with your friends. Friends who you thought you knew and trusted. I'm not going to give the story away, just BUY and WATCH this MOVIE.... Rel Dowdell and his team did a great job of 'telling it like it is' with taste. A very educational film.
DUKE UNIVERSITY RIGHT NOW!!!!.......2006-05-06
Yo! The filmmaker of this joint had some serious foresight. EVERYONE AT DULE UNIVERSITY should be made to watch this. This film could have saved them much embarassment and shame. Now that school's reputation will never be the same. People don't think that the things that happen in "Train Ride" can happen anywhere else, but it does. "Train Ride" takes place at a fictional black college, but as you can plainly see with the current scandalous events that took place at Duke University with the WHITE lacrosse team and the BLACK female dancer from nearby black college North Carolina Central, it can happen anywhere. Gotta give the writer/director props for making a super universal film that is more than in tune with current events than anything else out there. Duke University, R. Kelly, Mystikal, Kid Rock, Jayne Kennedy, Snoop Dogg, Rob Lowe, Paris Hilton, the wrestler Chyna, Pamela Anderson, Colin Farrell, the rapper Eve.. all have elements of "Train Ride" scandal somewhere in their lives that has made the world have a lesser opinion of them. Notice the diversity of the races of the names just mentioned. It happens to all races and classes. Get this joint and see the present day, the past, and the future of sexual relations gone terribly wrong, exploited, and untimately destroyed by greed, lust, and power.
colorblind drama to be lauded.......2006-05-06
This film is like being a fly on the wall watching lives unravel in an unfortunate and sad way. You feel compelled to watch. The ending surprised the crap out me. It had a new twist on what could have been old hat. In fact, it's the kind of ending that you have to see again to believe. I'm talking about the scene in the alley with the three male principals. Wood Harris yells, "We got options! We can run if we want too!" In reality, too much damage is done to ever turn back. The train went off the track and lives were destroyed forever because of insensitivity and selfishness. This film blows the lid off of any college drama done before, especially "Higher Learning." The casting was right on the money as well. Singleton's film may have had more money behind it, but definitely not more skill. Good job all around.
not just important for females to see.......2006-05-06
Females and males alike can get a lot from this film. One of the biggest problems in society today is the lack of respect that the current generation has for one another, especially on the dating tip. The characters in the film are not just black characters, they are any character u.s.a. I know the things that go on in this film are going on everywhere in this country, people are just scared to talk about it. This film is going to hit real close to home for many people for men and women. This is a great thing, because in the end, this film can help people heal or deal with this kind of ordeal, or better yet, it could save someone's life who may have been naive. The money is costs to check out this film is a bargain compared to years of therapy if the things in this film really happen to someone. That's the truth. Flick of choice for 2006.
