One of the most engaging features from 20th Century Fox's Holmes series, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also of historical interest as it based on a hugely popular, early 20th century stage play written by and starring William Gillette. Basil Rathbone cuts a fine figure as the lean, hawkish Great Detective, drawn into a complicated conspiracy by fiendish Dr. Moriarty (George Zucco) to distract Holmes while quietly preparing to steal the Crown Jewels. Nigel Bruce is on board as a buffoonish Dr. Watson, and British-born Ida Lupino is very good, and quite gorgeous, as a young woman who may be the target of a family curse. True-blue Sherlockians know that very little of Gillette's tale, and next to nothing about Zucco's or Bruce's performances, have anything to do with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's sacred canon. Still, this is a handsome production to enjoy on its own terms. --Tom Keogh

Description

The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes

Set in the Victorian Age and regarded by many as the finest of the fourteen films in the Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone series, `The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' was originally released in 1939 by Twentieth Century-Fox.

Professor Moriarty (George Zucco) has at long last been brought to trial for murder, but the `Napoleon of Crime' is acquitted after the court finds a lack of sufficient evidence. Moriarty wastes no time in plotting his next crime, but in order to be successful he must divert the attention of the Great Detective.

Intimidating, anonymous letters sent to young socialite Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino) ; the murder of Miss Brandon's brother; and threats to the security of a priceless gem consume the attention of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his companion Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce).

Are these mysterious occurrences simply erroneous distractions? Are they clues to a case irrelevant to the exploits of the evil Professor Moriarty? Or, are these portents of disaster inexorably linked to the master criminal's plan to commit a crime that will shake the very foundation of the British Empire? It is for Holmes and Watson to sort out these mysteries and, hopefully, eliminate the menace of Professor Moriarty.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.......2007-06-21

Based on a stage play and straying far from the Arthur Conan Doyle canon, Werker's "Holmes" nevertheless makes for thrilling entertainment, in no small part because it reunites Rathbone and co-star Nigel Bruce, playing the oafish Dr. Watson, from their first outing in "Hound of the Baskervilles." The young Lupino (who'd go on to direct movies) is radiant as a young beauty plagued by an ancient family curse--a ruse concocted, of course, by Zucco's deliciously malevolent Moriarty. It doesn't take a master logician to deduce that "Holmes" is a first-rate whodunit.

4 out of 5 stars Rathbone is the Best Sherlock.......2007-06-12

The quintessential movie Sherlock Holmes can be none other than Basil Rathbone. Forget that the movies (with the exception of the first two produced by Paramount, of which this is one) update Holmes to the twentieth century. The fun lingers. And of course, Nigel Bruce is a delight, even though he is NOT the Watson of Doyle's original work. But that Watson was insipid, only a faint ghost telling a fascinating story. Since Bruce's interpretation Dr. Watson has become, at least in later films and television adaptations, almost as important as Holmes himself, something that would probably have Sir Arthur turning over in his grave.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rathbone and Bruce magic........2006-03-22

Thoroughly enjoyed this great movie. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce make it a wonderful experience, even for those who are not fanatical fans of Sherlock Holmes.

5 out of 5 stars Holmes as usual!.......2006-03-22

This DVD arrived within a few days in good condition. My husband has watched it twice already (he's a REAL Basil-Rathbone-as-Holmes fan) and is very pleased at being able to get this title. We now have all the Rathbone titles except "The Scarlet Claw" (on order), and these movies will be watched over and over.

The movie is as good as all the other Rathbone "Holmeses," and still relevant to human behavior, even though the world has moved on from the time period they cover. Thank you, Amazon, for making this movie available.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to get started with film's Sherlock Holmes........2005-04-12

OK. What was in the water back in 1939? Was there a conspiracy to make, like, a HUNDRED movies that would last for all time?

Gone With The Wind, Gunga Din, Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...there's like two dozen more that you'd know by name...
...and THIS was made then TOO?

Inconceivable!

Anyways, this film is a great place to get to know Sherlock Holmes by way of Basil Rathbone. I can't imagine anyone else in the role (although others honestly have done a fine job) and when I read the novels, I 'see' him.

I love the interplay between Holmes and Nigel Bruce's Dr. Watson...they simply have the parts nailed. Nailed, nailed, nailed.

The breathless story involves, among other things, Professor Moriarty (of course), a diabolical nefarious "crime of the century", a mysterious woman, men of dubious intentions, a smattering of murders, and trying to find a fiddle note that irritates houseflies.

This is one of those movies that will have you saying, after it's over, "they sure don't make 'em like they used to!"

After seeing this, I went out and bought ALL of the remaining, lovingly remastered Rathbone/Bruce films, and plan on spending a few lazy Sunday afternoons with Mr. Holmes.

4 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem For Benny Hill Fans.......2005-08-15

The movie "Who Done It?" is classic slapstick. Notable was that this film was also the first starring role for Benny Hill, the lovable British comic who was best remembered for his show's burlesque-style humor than for his film work.
In the film, Hill played Hugo Dill, a lovable, bumbler who becomes a private detective, who ends up investigating the murder of a foreign diplomat who bears a resemblance to him, much to the chagrin of the Scotland Yard inspector who seems to lose patience with Dill's constant bumbling.
The DVD is especially noteworthy because it also contains a rarely seen 30-minute theatrical short titled "The Waiters", which was produced by Paramount in 1971. The piece contained no dialogue, paying homage to the silent film era.

4 out of 5 stars Crazy Slapstick Comedy.......2004-02-04

If you only like comedy films that are subtle and sophisticated, "Who Done It ? " is not for you. Personally, I found this movie to be consistently amusing, and I laughed out loud a number of times.

Benny Hill was one of Britain's most inventive comics, who achieved international stardom in the 70s and 80s through his zany television shows. In fact, television was Benny's medium--he did not make many movies.

"Who Done It ?"--released in 1956--features a young Benny in his first major starring role, and he makes the most of it. After losing his job at the Ice Capades, Benny decides to become a private detective, with the help of a surprisingly energetic bloodhound. He becomes involved with a pretty girl
( young and gorgeous Belinda Lee ), and a group of up-to-no-good Iron Curtain-type spies, led by stalwart British character actor, David Kossoff. Benny gets into one scrape after another, much to the continual annoyance of the police. There are various opportunities for Benny to "disguise" himself--a Hill trademark. Several setpieces stand out--posing as a "mad professor", Benny demonstrates a machine that "controls" the weather, with disastrous results--Benny and Belinda chasing the spies around a broadcasting convention at Earl's Court ( the whole film takes place in London )--the climactic race around a stock car track, reminiscent of the silent Keystone Cops movies.

Basil Dearden directs at a breakneck pace, and--yes--the plot is outlandish--the acting over the top--but if you like Benny and his antics, as I do, you'll love it.

Benny passed away suddenly about 12 years ago, and Britain lost one of it's brightest talents. In the biography included with this disc, it notes that a dying Charlie Chaplin spent many of his last days watching Benny's shows. Apparently, Milton Berle was a huge fan. If Chaplin and Berle thought Benny was funny, does it really matter what the rest of us think ? No comic could have more respected fans than these two "giants".

Another "bonus" with the DVD is a 30-minute, silent film Benny made in 1969, called "The Waiters"--Benny and a dim-witted sidekick are hired to cater a small party at an elegant country home. Would you want Benny to serve you food and drinks at a party ? If one of your guests is a curvaceous woman in a low-cut dress, would you want Benny within half a mile of her ?
Rhetorical questions both ! For you the viewer, this is a very entertaining half hour.

The picture quality for "Who Done It ?" is excellent--mono sound, of course. If you like goofy comedies--and Benny Hill in particular--Anchor Bay has given us another winner. Well done !

5 out of 5 stars Proof That Benny Hill Was A Great Comedian.......2002-04-03

Although I have watched the video 4 - 5 times, the most recent viewing was over a year ago. This is significant because it proves the memorably of the film. The film is well done. I must say there is no "obligatory endless complaining about rampant Socialism" so common to comedies of its era/place.

It has a fun chase at the end. There is a disastrous awards dinner. There are disguises too. It's a fun film. A note of caution: THERE ARE NO "BABES IN BIKINIS." It is a film with an actual plot ! Benny does exhibit many of his famous mannerisms, it's fun to look for them. I heartily recommend the film to fans of B&W Brit Comedies, and the "intellectual" Hill fan. :-D

Description

John Cleese is hilarious as the descendant of Sherlock Holmes in this modern detective drama of international power politics and intrigue. Unlike his illustrious grandfather however, this Sherlock Holmes only succeeds in bungling every job he organizes. Also stars Arthur Lowe as the "bionic" grandson of Dr. Watson, Stratford Johns as the Commissioner of Police, and Connie Booth as Mrs. Hudson.

5 out of 5 stars John Cleese - The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It.......2007-02-12

EXCELLENT ITEM!!

3 out of 5 stars Silly, But Funny!.......2006-09-05

"The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It" is an outrageous comedy which was first shown on the 18th of September in 1977. It is a spoof staring John Cleese, and it spoofs the American Government, Sherlock Holmes, other famous detectives from literature and television with just a bit of James Bond and the Six Million Dollar Man thrown in, just in case that wasn't enough. Also appearing in the film is Connie Booth, who was Cleese's wife and also appeared with him in "Fawlty Towers" (one of the funniest British comedies of all time). This movie was made between the first season (1975) and the second season (1979), and has a much wilder premise than that series.

In this movie, the grandchildren of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Professor Moriarty are once again at odds, as Moriarty is threatening to end civilization as we know it. Cleese is Arthur Sherlock-Holmes, the much less effective detective grandson. Arthur Lowe plays Dr. William Watson, the most dimwitted one ever, and someone that Homes keeps around just for his bionic bits (nose and leg).

The plot of the movie is outrageous and really doesn't matter when all is said and done. It plays out like "The Bicycle Tour" episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, in that it seems to be a series of skits all linked together by a rather odd story line. There are very funny spoofs of Kissinger and Ford, and ridiculous stereotypes played to the max in a couple of world delegate scenes. Other funny scenes include Holmes and Watson doing a crossword, Watson pulling the knife out of the chief inspector's back and then realizing that it would have been better had he left it in, and the where Holmes finds there are two Watsons.

I admit I have had a soft spot in my heart for this movie ever since I first saw it when I was young. I was worried that it would not be as good now that I am older, but while it is certainly very silly it still has a lot of laughs. I would have gone with four stars on this, but I was disappointed with the video quality and to a lesser extent the sound. It is a short film, running roughly 55 minutes long. There are no extra features on the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars not Monty Python.......2006-07-06

To enjoy this film you have to not have Monty Python expectations. It is much more of the style of Fawlty Towers. In some ways it is like the Carry On films. The actor playing the bus conductor was also one in the Carry On series.

It is a send up of Sherlock Holmes with Watson being even more of a buffoon than Nigel Bruce.

3 out of 5 stars 4 stars for a good movie, minus 1 for film quality.......2006-02-13

Actually I'd have given this little gem '4 stars' but for the quality of the cd. It has very obviously been copied from a sub-standard VHS tape. It was an unpleasant surprise in an otherwise funny movie.

As for the movie itself, very good. I liked the caricatures, the sight gags, the silliness. John Cleese, Arthur Lowe, Denholm Elliot, Connie Booth -- all good British actors and it was fun seeing them (and others) here. An untypical Sherlock Holmes film, with semi-mystery, semi-suspense, a wonderful Watson, and Cleese being Cleese. (A must watch for Cleese-ers is A FISH CALLED WANDA, where he proved once again in a classic scene that he can do more with facial expressions than many actors can do with a page full of lines.)

I really enjoyed this film despite the shoddy quality. If you're a Cleese or even a Holmes fan, get it and have some fun.

3 out of 5 stars good film, not too good quality.......2005-02-14

i've always been a cleese fan. connie booth is great too. so, i figured this would be a great film. well, it was just good. it was very silly arbitrary humor, but it still got a few laughs. so film overall-4 1/2 stars. i gave it 3 star for quality. i dont know about you guys, but when you got the dvd, were there white lines running through it like a vhs would? maybe it was just me or it was the poor video transfer. the voices were muffled and the picture was grainy, but i guess thats the best you could get for a movie over 40 years old. so overall, if you could get a deal on this film, go for it. its pretty funny if you like the python scenario scetches, but if thats not what you're looking for, check out fawlty towers with john cleese and connie booth. its fantastic!

Description

From the director of Kansas City Confidential and The Silencers comes this universal Chan mystery. Containing a number of film noir elements unique to the series (such as a weary young detective, stark urban sets and a grown-up romance), The Shanghai Cobra is one of the most striking Chans of all! Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) is called to investigate a strange and complicated series of mysterious murders by cobra venom. Soon Charlie, Number Three Son Tommy (Benson Fong) and ever-present assistant Birmhingham Brown are on the trail of an escaped con from Shanghai who's out to rob a government vault of its valuable contents: highly toxic radium!

3 out of 5 stars Among the Best of the "Monogram" Chans--But That Isn't Saying Much.......2007-06-21

Loosely based on novels by Earl Derr Biggers, 20th Century Fox's Charlie Chan series proved an audience favorite--but when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor the studio feared audiences would turn against its Asian hero. This was a miscalculation: actor Sidney Toler took the role to "poverty row" Monogram Studios, where he continued to portray the character in eleven more films made between 1944 and his death in 1947.

20th Century Fox had regarded the Chan films as inexpensive "B" movies, but even so the studio took considerable care with them: the plots were often silly, but the pace was sharp, the dialogue witty, and the casts (which featured the likes of Bela Lugosi and Ray Milland) always expert. The result was a kindly charm which has stood the test of time. Monogram was a different matter: Chan films were "B" movies plain and simple. Little care was taken with scripts or cast and resulting films were flat, mediocre at best, virtually unwatchable at worst.

Thanks to an adequate cast and a few interesting plot devices, THE SHANGHAI COBRA is among the best of the Monogram-made Chan films--but even so it barely manages to acheive a consistent mediocrity. In this particularly entry, Chan (Sidney Toler) is called upon to investigate a murderer who kills with what appears to be a cobra-like bite; at the same time, he decides to make certain that a government supply of radium tucked away in a bank vault, of all places, remains secure. Do these two seemingly unrelated plot lines come together? Well... could be!

Sidney Toler is always enjoyable as Chan, but most of his Monogram performances seemed "phoned in"--and that is as true of COBRA as it is of any Monogram Chan film. As usual, the really enjoyable performer is Mantan Mooreland. Changing times have led us to look upon Moreland's brand of comedy as demeaning to African-Americans, but he was an expert actor and comic, and taken within the context of what was possible for a black actor in the 1940s his work has tremendous charm and innocence.

Fans of the 20th Century Fox series are likely to find Monogram's Chan a significant disappointment and newcomers who like the Monogram films will probably consider them third-rate after encountering the Fox films. Like other Monogram Chan films, THE SHANGHAI COBRA is best left to determined collectors. Three stars, and that's being generous.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

5 out of 5 stars Classic Charlie Chan.......2007-01-04

Wonderfully written and acted by Sidney Toler. A great movie for all Charlie Chan fans.

4 out of 5 stars One of Toler's Best Performances as Charlie Chan.......2005-03-18

Obviously the Chan movies made at Monogram could never compare to those made at Fox with Warner Oland, but of these, The Shanghai Cobra is one of the best. Several employees of a bank have been murdered by a killer dubbed "The Cobra Killer" for his use of cobra venom in dispatching his enemies. Chan is called in to solve the murders.

Director Phil Karlson really gets the most out of the limited budget he had to work with and this film looks much better than most Monogram films with better production values and superior acting. The mystery is also very well done and keeps your interest in trying to figure out who the murderer is. Benson Fong and the always enjoyable Mantan Moreland provide the comic relief as #3 son Tommy Chan and Birmingham Brown respectively. Moreland brings life to every role he is in.

As a kid I would love staying up late and watching these with my dad who was a huge fan. We watched several together when Turner Classic was running them a couple of years ago or so and I was so disappointed when they decided to pull them off the air. These were always very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Cobra Venom Is The Weapon.......2002-08-26

The killer uses venom from a cobra to eliminate his victims in this film. Sidney Toler plays Chan and the cast includes Benson Fong as Tommie Chan and Manton Moreland in the role of Birmingham Brown. Fong and Moreland are really quite good as a comic team. George Callahan and George Wallace Sayre handle the screen play. THE SHANGHAI COBRA is one of the better entries in the Chan series.

4 out of 5 stars By Far The Best Monogram Chan movie.......2002-02-11

"The Shanghai Cobra" is my favorite of the Monogram Charlie Chans. It is beautifully atmospheric in the opening scenes, and I think Phil Karlson, the director (his first of two Chan outings, the other being "Dark Alibi" [1946]which is also worth watching)adds alot of these great effects, making it an enjoyable mystery that will keep you guessing. The comedy in this entry is superb with a wordplay gag about "u-turns" running all through the film. The sets and the noticable shadows and darkness make it almost like a "film noir" movie. Some action takes place in the sewers below the bank that they are doing investigations in(more darkness.)I also enjoyed the "flashback" when they showed Charlie Chan in his visit to Shanghai in '36 and '37. A fun film, a good mystery, and atmospheric at the same time, I would recommend this film highly to any Charlie Chan fan. Excuse, Please...

    Description

OscarÂ(r) winner* "Peter Finch is excellent" (Judith Crist) and Golden GlobeÂ(r) winner** Rita Tushingham is "entirely captivating" (The Hollywood Reporter) in this bittersweetstory of an extraordinary romance. Beautifully scripted, brilliantly directed and superbly acted, this "charming and rueful movie" (The New Yorker) "goes straight to the heart" (The Herald Examiner)! He barely noticed her the first time they met but with one glance, this naïve Irish farm girl drew him to her side. She's not beautiful, not sophisticated, and far too young for a man of his years, but she has torn him from his solitude and set his soul on fire. Yet now, even as she moves into his Dublin home and he commits to her, he knows he can never fulfill her girlishnotions of love nor satisfy the yearning in those haunting, hungry eyes. *1976: Actor, Network **1962: New Star of the Year, A Taste of Honey

1 out of 5 stars it gave me a headache.......2004-11-10

I did not like this movie because it was very dull. All it was was kissing, books and dramatic music. I like some black and white movies but not this one. Peter finch is better in kidnapped! by walt disney.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Films-Ever!.......2003-12-05

I saw this first in 1975 and still remember the haunting scenes with Rita Tushingham. She plays sensitively yet without maudlin excess as the young single woman pregnant with her Jamaican boyfriend's baby, supported by her local friends including a Gay neighbor. An honest view of life in 60's Manchester,as well as the film debut of an excellent actress.

5 out of 5 stars Kitchen Sink, Glistening and Brilliant.......2002-11-27

GIRL WITH GREEN EYES is a Woodfall film, one of those slice-of-life-in-the-UK pictures produced by Tony Richardson in the 60's, Britain's answer to the French New Wave. All are generally worthwhile views; this one is marvelous, with wonderful dialogue by Edna O'Brien from her novel, THE LONELY GIRL. Frequently laugh-out-loud funny and also quietly touching, not the easiest combination to pull off, but managed beautifully here. Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave are simple and simply perfect as the country girls trying to make a go of life in Dublin, while Peter Finch strikes the proper note of bruised, reluctant romanticism as the object of Rita's pursuit. Almost forty years old, GIRL's as fresh as paint, could have been made yesterday. Tonic, rich and rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful artifact from the mid-Sixties.......2002-02-16

This is a very stylish story of a young Irish girl's affair with an older man. Part sad, part whimsical, and all around very refreshing, the film winds up being more light and fun than dark and tragic, as one might expect.

The film is wonderfully photographed in glorious black and white, both in a documentary format and a dash of a somewhat "New Wave" style. It's an interesting mixture, anyway. In fact, the entire film appears to have been shot on location in Dublin and the surrounding countryside, lending even further creditbility to the documentray styling.

The well-written dialogue is full of engaging double-meanings, and may remind one of "The Prisoner", as the lines can be both cryptic, yet very deep and telling. The actors all deliver, too.

The film is very much a product of its time, and captures the feeling of what it must have been like to be a youth in 1963 Dublin. It very much conveys the atmosphere of a "slice of life" during the era, as the young girl comes of age.

This is a little-known gem that aspiring film students may find inspirational. Lynn Redgrave's debut film.

3 out of 5 stars Good movie for Kevin Smith (Ares) Fans........2007-01-18

Anyone who loved Kevin Smith as Ares in Xena should enjoy this movie. I myself, preferred him with longer hair, but his good looks are still there. Typical crime drama, I liked the first movie in this series of Lawless a lot better, but can't find a good DVD.

    4 out of 5 stars KIWI KILLER.......2004-05-16

DEAD EVIDENCE is a mystery thriller set and filmed in New Zealand. That's a change, huh? Angela Dotchin plays Jodie, a wannabe private eye who is working as girl Friday for a rather ineffective boorish boss. One day she overhears her boss telling his female client that there's nothing he can do for her husband. The husband is played by C. Thomas Howell, looking unusually buff and macho, and he is in jail for the rape and murder of a young girl five years ago. His appeal is coming up and wife believes that a recent similar killing in the same neck of the woods may have been done by the same man who killed the previous girl. She says hubby is innocent. When the PI turns her down, Jodie decides to investigate on her own and in the process loses her job. She hooks up with an ex-cop played quite handily by Kevin Smith, a roughened hunk, buff and hard-boiled. Their private investigation goes awry when Howell breaks out of prison and goes to kill the cop he feels framed him. During this break, Howell accidentally wounds Smith and Dotchin is on her own. Her trail leads to a kindly veterinarian who just might be the killer.
The pace is tight and although there aren't any surprises once the killer is identified, Smith and Dotchin have a good chemistry and they are different kinds of heroes.
This is a pleasant surprise and worth viewing if you like the film noir type of mystery.

      Description

The Carters are an all-American family on their way to California when their car breaks down far from civilization in the remote southwestern desert. But they are not alone: Watching from the hills is a very different kind of clan, a family of marauding inbred cannibals with an unspeakable taste for human flesh and monstrous brutality. In the nightmare that follows, what depravities must this wholesome family endure to survive? And in a primal wasteland ruled by lust and rage, who will become the most shocking savages of all? Dee Wallace, James Whitworth, Susan Lanier and Michael Berryman co-star in this disturbing cult classic written and directed by horror-master Wes Craven (LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, SCREAM).

2 out of 5 stars Unsatisfactory Rendering Of A Novel Of The Same Stripe........2006-02-18

This somewhat less than rewarding production is based closely upon a novel by Harriette Ashbrook: "The Murder Of Steven Kester", to a point of its inclusion of substantial swatches of Ashbrook's stilted dialogue, but since the original book remains safely confined within a rather narrow spectrum of sleuthing utilized by the English writer, it can be no surprise that the film is also dull and generally predictable. Action opens briskly with assistant director Melville Shyer, who also contributes the script, effectively leading a congregation of extras during a lively costume party sequence, this festivity organized at the home of wealthy Steven Kester by his granddaughter Jean (Shirley Grey) as a diversion to facilitate her unobstructed elopement with beau Cliff Miller (William Bakewell). Here the pace of the film begins to flag as journeyman director Richard Thorpe mishandles the tempo following discovery of Steven Kester's corpse, decorated with stab wounds, and a homicide investigation then begins under the supervision of Captain (or Chief, at times Inspector) Crofton (John Wray) who fails to acknowledge any recognizable form of correct investigative police procedures as he browbeats a large contingent of available suspects. Needless to report, many of these latter have apparent motives to have committed the slaying, and if Crofton neglects one of them, a meddlesome crime novelist, Michael Tracy (Charles Starrett), a recurring lead character as "Spike Tracy" in the publications of Ashbrook, is on hand to abet the detective. Viewers, however, will not require similar assistance, due to the story hardly being abstruse enough to challenge most armchair detectives. Production values for this low tier Chesterfield Pictures item are expectedly paltry, but some performances from players are to be valued, in particular a brief turn by Lloyd Whitlock, and neatly developed characterizations from Grey and Dorothy Revier as female suspects. Director Thorpe, ever respectful of his cast members, and especially of those whom are stage trained, leads with a loose rein.

3 out of 5 stars Where were you during the third dance?.......2005-03-18

A rich 70-year-old man is murdered during a costume party he is hosting and the killer is sought.
GREEN EYES is an old (1934) murder mystery that talks way too much and flashbacks way too little. It was directed by the competent Richard Thorpe, who's unfortunate claim-to-fame is that he was the first director on THE WIZARD OF OZ, fired a few weeks after shooting began when his work proved unsatisfactory.
Among the suspects are the murdered man's granddaughter Jean Kester, played by pretty young Shirley Grey. The 20-something Grey would drop out of pictures in a couple of years, presumably against her wishes. Another suspect is wise-acre crime novelist Michael Tracy, played by Charles Starrett, who would appear in scores of b-movies up through the 1950s, most notably as the Durango Kid in many b-westerns.
GREEN EYES is an okay mystery that would have benefited from brisker pacing, a bit less dialogue and some less obvious `surprises' - I'm no great shakes at such things and I figured a thing or two out way too early. The transfer print quality is fair, with some wear evident on almost every frame. Some vital dialogue is missing, lost when the film jumps because of missing film frames.

4 out of 5 stars These eyes so green, I can stare for a thousand years.......2005-02-02

The thirties was a dynamic decade where films turned form stilted and simple to dynamic with depth. This is a film that was made in the transition. At first you think it is too simple with a hokey sound track. Then you get wrapped up in the story and find that this is a great short and to the point who done it. The film is black and white. It sort of has that Charlie Chan feel.

The story is a screen play that has the look of a stage play. It is based on a novel "The Murder of Steven Kester" By H. Ashbrook. Jean Kester is in the process if eloping with Michael Tracy. So people will not follow them they cut the phone lines and everyone's distributor wires. Now Jean's ruthless grandfather is found disposed of. It looks mighty suspicious. The house is full of people that were invited to a costume party. The police gat little cooperation from any of the guests. Before the day is over it will look like everyone had motive and opportunity. We may even find a few more deaths.

What part do Green eyes play in the movie?

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Adaptation of Book.......2005-02-21

A really good adaptation of Margery Allingham's book, keeping well to the plot while minimising the personal mystery of her noble sleuth. Makes a very enjoyable entertainment. The whole series is worth watching if you like Christie / Allingham / Sayers type English mysteries.
