Michael Palin started another career in the late 1980s: explorer. The former Python brings humor, humanity, and class to the genre of filmed travelogues with Around the World in 80 Days, his first and best journey. The genesis of this BBC series is a sly side-bet: can someone travel via 19th-century means around the world in 80 days like Jules Verne's fictional Phileas Fogg did in 1872? As Palin travels around London asking experts about world travel, it seems to be a 50/50 chance at best. The reliance on air travel makes shipping schedules very tentative, and in some ways just slowing down may be a hardship for a 20th-century traveler. As Palin notes, air travel is about viewing airports; no one really "travels" anymore.
Armed with his inflatable globe, Palin starts off by train across Europe before problems arise: missed connections, labor strikes, language difficulties, and the like. But Palin is adorable company to have for the seven-part, six-hour series. He manages the impossible, always making us believe we are in the moment, even though some scenes had to be shot to accommodate the camera (he enters a taxi alone, the next scene we are with him in the cab). Palin is light on his feet, with quick humorous jabs, which comes in handy as his schedule is always on the brink of disaster. He offers round remarks on the countries he visits and often has amusing side trips: garbage man in Venice, bit actor in India, and cook aboard a freighter.
The highlight is the third episode, set almost entirely on a dhow slowly moving from Arabia to India. Here Palin is introduced to a life slowed down to its basics with a crew of mostly non-English speakers. The segment is so distinct the producers asked--and were granted--permission to add an additional episode instead of cutting most of the dhow footage.
Although Palin continued his adventures (Pole to Pole, Full Circle), nothing is as nimble or kinetic--there is a ticking clock element--as this first voyage. His entourage or Passepartout--Fogg's righthand man--grew with each voyage. There were usually two to four production folks with him on 80 Days, but they are rarely seen. The end result is the best travel "slide show" anchored by one of world's most amusing men. For couch potato and traveler alike, this is compelling viewing. --Doug Thomas
Description
Monty Python comedian/writer Michael Palin takes up the famous challenge: to travel around the world in only 80 days. Air travel is forbidden, and wherever possible he uses the same routes and transport as Jules Verne's fictional hero, Phileas Fogg, meeting many interesting characters en route. As he races across continents and against the clock, Michael's charm and ingenuity delights the armchair traveler.

Michael Palin's Around the world in 80 days.......2007-05-28
If you love travelling and laughing Michael Palin's film is a MUST, you'll
enjoy every minute of it AND it is a great way to increase one's general
knowledge.GET IT, you won't regret it EVER!!!!
awesome.......2007-05-22
It seemed like I went around the world with Michael Palin. Absolutely wonderful.
Witty History in the making.......2007-05-21
Its so very cool to sit back for a bit, hear Michael Palin's wry humor as he attempts to make the trip in 80 days. My family loved it when we were kids in the 90's and now its a nostolgia trip for me and starting my own family. This is a unique series and totally worthwhile, and even thought provoking as he visits different cultures and makes commentary. Especially haunting is the visit to China right before Tianamen(sp) Square in 1989. You will enjoy this series if you love to see the world from your armchair!
Pretty good...but a bit dated.......2007-05-20
My only criticism is that Michael's dialog with various locals is a bit on the tedious side. Maybe it's because I'm not British -- I don't know. I didn't care for the five-star hotel stays and black tie affairs. And the constant references to Phileas Fogg -- I don't get it.
So....with the exception of Michael's dialog, five-star hotels, black tie affairs, and Phileas Fogg, it was a pretty good series.
A true pleasure.......2007-05-13
I like travelling, but normally I don't like travel programs. They're boring and sensible, and although the surroundings are beautiful, they don't deliver anything you couldn't have looked up in a Lonely PLanet guide.
But not this one. Ex-Python turned globetrotter and British national treasure Michael Palin delivers a thoroughly entertaining, funny, untraditional and quite exciting travel program with, what would become his first of many great travel programs, "Around the World in 80 Days", where he tries to recreate Phileas Fogg's journey around the world in Jules Vernes classic novel. No planes allowed, only boats and landtransport.
Not only is (was) it a new and more exciting way to create a travel program, but Palin, with his great sense of humour and his happy go lucky sort of approach to the task before him, is one of the best television presenters ever. He really grabs your attention and makes you interested in the places he goes to. He has indeed made the entire UK sit and watch his travels to places they had never heard of before week after week.
I have never spoken to anybody who, after seeing Palin's travels, did not feel invigorated and full of lust for adventure. It did certainly rekindle my love of trains and boats watching "Around the World in 80 Days". Now I travel by train instead of plane whenever I can.
I have seen the series some 4 or 5 times over the years now, and it never gets boring. They are the benchmark of travel programming. Highest possble recommendation.

This Mike Todd production was a star-studded, multi-million dollar extravaganza when first released in 1956. It remains enjoyable family fare, but time has somewhat dulled its shine. Still, it compares favorably to the overly long, TV mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle.
Elegant David Niven plays the neurotically punctual Phileas Fogg, a British gent who is spurned on by a wager to prove he can travel around the world in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet, played with persnickety humor by Cantinflas.
Nominated for several Academy Awards, this was written by John Farrow (Mia's dad) and S.J. Perelman, based on Jules Verne's 1873 classic. The fun part is the razzle-dazzle. Todd knew what he was doing with all those exotic locales and over 40 cameo appearances, including Charles Boyer, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, José Greco, Peter Lorre, Buster Keaton, Frank Sinatra, and Red Skelton. A very young Shirley MacLaine was painted and dyed to play a lively Indian Princess. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
Phileas Fogg bet his fellow club members that he can circle the globe in eighty days. That may not be impressive today, but in 1872, it was nearly impossible. Accompanied by his valet, Passepartout, and the wandering Princess Aouda, Fogg crosses Europe, India, Japan, the Pacific and the United States.

Odd old clunker.......2007-04-12
I bought this film to watch with my 4 year old....odd clunker of a film that really stars the butler. A cavalcade of stars and good old fashioned fun. You can really see the film making in this film...and not in a good way. But some sequences are really fun for a four year old. He loved the train across America sequence and the steamboat across the Atlantic. I think at the time David Niven was okay for the role but I don't find him terribly appealing and this is my biggest problem with the film. Shirley MacLain (I love her in most everything) but what were they thinkin', a princess from India! I know this film won an Oscar for Best Pic in 1956....It is what it is....But now I want to read the book by Jules Verne. Funny story. We were waiting for my husband to watch the film and turned on our TV (Frankfurt, Germany) and lo and behold the 80's mini series version of Around the World was on starring Pierce Brosnan and Peter Ustinov. My son seemed to like this version better and so did I. It was more engaging, more human like and 6 hours long which is probably what the story needs and Mr. Brosnan brought a different feel to the role of Phinneas than Mr. Niven. He seemed more human, perhaps!
Poor Quality for the price.......2007-03-01
Although the film is still very enjoyable, I was very dismayed at the quite poor quality of the video image. It is very annoying to pay a premium price for a dvd and then discover that the imaging is very poorly done. I do not understand why they had to cut this dvd without good clarity. The dvd simply comes off as "fuzzy"---this is very disappointing!
In the grand tradition of Hollywood.......2007-01-28
Around the World in 80 Days is a movie in the grand tradition of Hollywood. The transfer to DVD is excellent as are the supplemental materials included in the set.
Too Much Padding and Not Enough Substance.......2007-01-25
When you go to the movies today, what movies you go see may force you to ask yourself "Where's the beef?" Today there are movies with wonderful special effects, grand stars, and no heart. Movies that are visual feasts that wow you, but leave you feeling empty on the inside. While people may consider this a recent trend with all the advances in technology, the truth is these sort of movies have been around for years, and the 1956 Best Picture winner "Around The World In 80 Days" is living proof of this. The story for "Around The World In 80 Days" takes up a whole twenty minutes of the movie. Several gentlemen hear of a bank being robbed by a thief who has fled the country, which leads to a discussion on whether or not he could successfully get away from the law. Phileas Fogg says that technology has advanced so much that if the thief were resourceful enough he could circle the world in exactly 80 days. The other gentlemen laugh and say it can't be done, so Fogg bets them 20,000 pounds that he personally could travel around the world in 80 days.
The gentlemen accept his bet, and with his assistant Passepartout sets out to circle the globe using whatever means necessary . A subplot involving a police man chasing Fogg due to a suspicion that he might have stolen some money, as well as a subplot where Fogg and Passepartout save an Indian princess (played by a young Shirley MacLaine in makeup) take place during this movie, but they are all second nature to what the movie is really about: Exotic locations and wondrous sights to see. Now, before we get into the meat (or lack therefor) of the movie, it should be noted that "Around The World In 80 Days" was not made with the intention of being good. Oh I'm sure producer Michael Todd (who gets his name above the title over the director) was pleased that people thought it was good, but the intention was not to make something that would be digested slowly. Michael Todd was tired of movies that were all talk and no action, and he wanted people to feel like a participant in the movie.
Therefore he created a new camera called Todd-AO, which would later be known as 70mm Cinescope. "Around The World In 80 Days" was not the first widescreen film (that was "The Robe") but made the biggest impression on the world. Ingeniously, the movie's opening (with a prolog by Edward R. Murrow) begins in the standard 35mm full screen mode, which was the shape of a TV screen. After a lengthy history of science and travel, the screen widens up to reveal the 70mm Todd-AO format. If you saw this movie in the theaters in 1956, this is where the curtain would pull open to cover the whole wall of the theater, therefor making the movie as immersive as possible. But making the picture bigger was only the beginning. Now Todd was going to make it so that audiences would be taken where they never went before. In a hot air balloon ride. To Spain to watch a bull fight. On a train where savage Indians are raiding the train, which results in a epic gun fight with the main characters fighting for their lives.
Everything that could thrill audiences were thrown into this movie, as well as a bunch of cameo appearances from famous stars such as Buster Keaton, Frank Sinatra, and Trevor Howard. In fact, this is the first movie where the term "cameo appearance" was coined in the first place. There are more then twenty cameo appearances in "Around The World In 80 Days," though most of the people don't say anything, and where there just to get a reaction from the audience (Example: A salon player looks up from his piano long enough for us to see it's Frank Sinatra and then puts his head back down). Considering this film pioneered so many techniques we take for granted now, I can't say I completely hate this film. That said, "Around The World In 80 Days" is the dullest Best Picture winner you are most likely ever going to see. Not bad, dull. For all the techniques this film created, it is a shame the story itself is not more interesting.
I don't know whether or not this is the fault of the source material, the film makers, or both. Certainly science has evolved so much in the past few years, that the idea you would need 80 days to circle the globe is absurd, you could travel it in less then a few days (and that's if you're being lazy). Even at the time of this films release it was easy to travel the world in half the time of this film, so the novelty of the story is long gone. So yes, the source material doesn't provide much suspense or imagination anymore, but worse was the film makers insistence of being too much in love with their own techniques. So intent are the film makers to make the audiences feel like they are viewing the world, the movie stalls several times in the movie, becoming tedious along the way. I mentioned that the storyline takes up about twenty minutes of the time in this movie, but the movie itself is more then three hours long. So what is it you are actually watching for those three hours?
Well, everything but story. The prolog with Edward R. Murrow is a good example of how much time the film wastes. Aside from the introduction to the Todd-AO format, this introduction has a documentary feel that has nothing to do with the movie. Then there's the fact that when you consider that Fogg and Passepartout are in a race it's very odd that they spend so much time lounging around. They go to Spain and spend almost a half hour fighting a bull. A balloon flight takes fifteen minutes. Indians chase the train for twenty. Shots of the sky and sea easily amount to more then an hours worth of film. And it just goes on and on, with these characters saying absolutely nothing of interest. During a boat scene there is about ten minutes of crew members throwing wood into the steam engine to make a boat go faster. It helps that Fogg has enough money to buy boats, trains, and whatever else he needs to win the race. I'm not exactly sure how much 20,000 pounds was worth back in 1956, but it seems like the cost of the race far outweighs the reward for winning it.
This movie won five Academy Awards. It's saying something that film did not win Best Director or was even nominated for any acting awards. This is a technical film through and through. The problem with technical films winning Oscars for Best Picture is that the excitement of them wear down pretty fast. While movies like "Ben-Hur," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and "Amadeus" were all very technical movies, they also had the story and characters to back up the movie when the visuals became outdated. "Around The World In 80 Days" is easily one of the worst Best Picture winners. It's not terrible, but it's painfully dull, it's so long it's maddening, and you don't ever really feel like your joining a race considering how many side trips are taken that wastes time. If there's a Best Picture winner you have to chose to not see, "Around The World In 80 Days" should be high on the list of considerations.

A spectacle in every sense of the world!.......2006-12-18
Mike Todd's version of Jules Verne tale offers a refined English comedy, giant-screen travel landscapes, dazzling brilliant color, famous actors in small roles... as Phileas Fogg and his comical valet made the tour of the world beginning in England, going to Europe, the Middle East, India, and Asia...
It begins in (1872) Victorian London as the wealthy, supremely confident Phileas Fogg sets out a wager that he can traverse the globe in precisely eighty days... The other club members at the Reform Club think Fogg is a fool, and challenge his claim and wager £20,000 that he is wrong...
The snags begin almost immediately, as the true gentleman misses a train and has to travel by balloon... The wild journey takes Fogg and his new servant into a series of incredible adventures in every land they pass through...
David Niven plays the true impassive Englishman Phileas Fogg... A polished man of the world, who makes no superfluous gestures, and is never seen to be moved or agitated... A puzzling personage, who believes in progress, science, and intellectual deduction... An eccentric quiet gentleman who talks very little and lives by a precise schedule of tea, whist games, fish and chips... He lives alone in a big house, and a single domestic sufficed to serve him...
Mexican screen legend Cantinflas known as the comic genius of the Spanish-speaking world, plays Passepartout, the most faithful of domestics...
Passepartout is a multi-skilled honest Frenchman with a pleasant oval face, slender and slight, soft-mannered and serviceable...
Robert Newton plays Mr. Fix, the mysterious detective who had been dispatched from England in search of the bank robber... He is a slight-built personage, with a nervous, intelligent face, and bright eyes peering out from under eyebrows which he is incessantly twitching...
Shirley MacLaine plays the charming young Indian princess, Aouda, who was married against her will at age seven... She speaks English with great purity...
One of the main interests of the film is the various cameos played by stars of the time who give minute but exquisite characterizations:
- Finlay Currie, Mr. Fogg's usual partner at whist...
- Robert Morley, one of the directors of the Bank of England...
- John Gielgud, the dismissed servant who relates that his master wears two watches, and every available surface in his house is covered with so many clocks...
- Trevor Howard, the club's member who rejects the news that the English gentleman has robbed the Bank of England...
- Charles Boyer, the educated travel agent who proposes to the couple to travel with a hot-air balloon...
- Martine Carol, the offended lady who slaps the new butler just for saying: 'Mademoiselle!'
- Fernandel, the French coachman who was not so content with the tip...
- Gilbert Roland, the Arab who offers his ship to Marseilles just on one condition...
- Cesar Romero, the henchman who sadistically insists Passepartout must fight a bull even if he doesn't know how...
- Ronald Colman, the Railway Official who announces (No more railway!) all passengers know that they must provide means of transportation for themselves from Kholby to Allahabad...
- Cedric Hardwicke, the officer who finds happily a means of conveyance : to cross the deep jungle on an elephant!
- Charles Coburn, the Steamship Company clerk who makes the observation that the 'Carnatic' had sailed the evening before...and he doesn't expect any vessel to Yokohama one week from now...
- Peter Lorre, the smiling Japanese steward who informs Passepartout that being broke without money in Yokohama... is catastrophic!
- Glynis Johns, the sporting lady who bets with her companion on Fogg's outcome...
- George Raft, the suspicious mob who chases everyone who stands near his glamorous woman...
- Marlene Dietrich, the Barbary Coast saloon hostess who looks for a way to be free...
- Frank Sinatra, the honky-tonk pianist...
- Red Skelton, the drunken with great appetite...
- John Carradine, the insolent colonel hit by an arrow...
- Buster Keaton, the American train conductor who announces some delay...
- Andy Devine, the first mate who refuses 'Henrietta' to be burn...
- Victor McLaglen, the helmsman who is ordered ('Full steam!') to feed all the fires until the coal is exhausted...
- John Mills, the sleepy carriage driver at the delicate moment...
The other scenes that were actually outrageous and delightful are:
Passepartout scooping some snow off an alp to chill a bottle of champagne; his funny and graceful way of bullfighting; his burlesque dance with a troupe of Spanish dancers; his venture to ride an ostrich through a back-lot Hong Kong; his anxiety when he is captured by savage Sioux; his courage when he is almost burned to death with an Indian widow; his fault when he clears the 'human' pyramid; his ignorance when he breaks Hindus religious beliefs and his absurdity when he constantly tries to hit on anything in skirts...
With terrific music, this Academy Award winner for Best Picture of 1956 is nice for the family to watch...

The 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, 24 Hour Party People), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days--considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes--featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung--are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. --Bret Fetzer

Great Kids Movie.......2007-07-03
My grandkids are Jackie Chan fans, (of course so am I) and I was looking for a good movie they could watch without a lot of bad language and violence. This movie had everything I could ask for, great action, comedy and enough adult fare to keep me interested. The kids and I both loved it!
This movie remake really stinks big time, but..........2007-06-25
This remake of Jules Verne's 'Around the World in 80 Days' (actually, this is the third go-round if you count the Pierce Brosnan-Peter Ustinov TV movie in-between which also had its' problems) is a terrible, boring movie. Despite all of the familiar faces that show up with Jackie Chan and the other leads (Arnold must've been paid a lot of money for a cameo to make a complete fool of himself before becoming California's Governor), this 'comedy' is an absolute B.O.M.B. But I disagree with many reviewers when they suggest watching the 1956 T.U.R.K.E.Y. starring David Niven, Cantanflas and Shirley MacLaine. That '56 Oscar Winner (also filled to capacity with celebrity cameos) is considered by many in the film industry as one of the worst choices for Best Picture. If you have it on DVD or VHS, try watching it. It is so bland, so humorless, so lacking in adventure, so B.O.R.I.N.G. I guarantee you won't be able to get through it. Hey, the music is nice, and Cantinflas is allowed to show off some of his talents, but Niven is stiff and dull, the plot (a bet, I know) is paper thin, and there are absolutely no interesting characters (even Robert Newton, who is hired to spy on Niven, is underused). The 1956 version, in other words, is overhyped and totally blah, with three exclamation points!!! If you really want to watch some exciting Jules Verne action, watch Disney's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' (1954) or 'Mysterious Island' (1960). I mean, some books just aren't meant to be translated into film. Maybe 'Around the World in 80 Days' is one of those books.
Jackie Chan Strikes Again!!!.......2007-05-23
Of course, if you love Jackie Chan, just about any movies he's made is a MUST! This one has everything! He's funny, the action is speedy and all-over-the-place. There are also some tender character moments. Steve Coogan as Mr. Fogg is dashing and dares to be a little silly. Ewen Bremner is a cute addition to the mix as the free-spirited artist-lady, and handles herself well with screen-stealers Jackie and Steve.
Please check this one out the first chance you get!
Disney + Chan = funny.......2007-05-07
I wasn't too sure what I'd find when I popped this one in my DVD player. It didn't take long for me to be laughing and, I'll admit, even gigglesnorting at the comedic moments. The laughs come pretty steadily with this movie. Mixed in with the situational comedy and prop gags that Jackie Chan is well known for, there's a entertaining storyline. Plenty of other well known comedians make appearances. All in all, worth the money spent and it's 95% child safe. ;)
Okay as a Jackie Chan movie; terrible as a Verne story.......2007-03-11
If you attempt to watch this movie thinking about Jules Verne's book or thinking about the epic 1956 movie, you will be sorely disappointed. Some of the concepts of the original book and movie remain, but in general the only two concepts that survived from the book and the 1956 movie are the bet to travel around the world in a maximum of 80 days and the cameos of (famous?) people sprinkled throughout the movie.
Jackie Chan steals a jade Buddha from the Bank of England that thieves had originally stolen from his village in China. During his escape from the police Chan encounters Phileas Fogg, a rather eccentric inventor who is in immediate need of a French valet. Chan, whose real name is Lau Xing, quickly makes up a French-sounding name, Passepartout. The first encounter with Fogg is somewhat humorous as Chan rides a roller coaster until the track breaks and Chan goes flying about London.
Fogg has been trying to gain acceptance at the Royal Academy of Science, where Lord Kelvin insists that there is nothing major remaining to be invented. In fact, the real Lord Kelvin did make a similar statement regarding discoveries in physics. Other historical figures alluded to the lack of new inventions (how wrong THEY were!). Fogg bets Lord Kelvin his position as the head of the Royal Academy of Science in exchange for Fogg halting all inventive activities that Fogg can journey around the world in 80 days. Lau Xing helped to goad Fogg into the bet, hoping to use the journey to return the Buddha to his village.
Off Fogg, "Passepartout" and soon artist Monique La Roche (Cécile De France) go. As they travel they meet various people who appear to be mostly interested in stopping their journey. Some of the actors portraying these people are well-known, with the best known being Arnold Schwarzenegger. Former Chan co-star Owen Wilson ("Shanghai Noon") appears as Wilbur Wright. Other relatively well-known stars include Kathy Bates, Macy Gray, Sammo Hung, and John Cleese.
The most original part of the encounters is the martial arts scenes. The fight with the Ten Tigers in Lau Xing's village is nicely choreographed. Another fight scene in New York involving a yet to be assembled Statue of Liberty (which is very good even though the Statue of Liberty was assembled well before the Wright brothers started their bicycle business) contains numerous excellent scenes.
As with any movie involving Jackie Chan the stunts are excellent. The balloon launch contains an extended stunt sequence involving a mooring rope that must have been very dangerous to accomplish. The rope scenes also yield some humor as Chan climbs up the side of a building and jumps off the rope to regain Fogg's bag. There are other stunt sequences sprinkled throughout the film. Some of the sequences are reprises of Chan stunts from other movies, many are new. Many are ludicrous. Nearly all are enjoyable to watch.
This movie is fun to watch if you are a Jackie Chan fan. However, this movie is very tongue-in-cheek and has little to do with the original premise of the Jules Verne book. The movie has lost the epic feel of the 1956 movie, and the movie has given up any pretense of explaining how someone might have traveled around the world in 80 days in the late 1800's. If you are going to watch this movie thinking you are going to see another attempt to make a movie faithful to the Jules Verne book or at least similar to the epic 1956 version, you will be very disappointed. If you want to see a Jackie Chan comedy very loosely inspired by Jules Verne's book "Around the World in 80 Days," then you have come to the right place.
Good Luck!

International Fun with Murphy's Law.......2007-05-23
Around the World in 80 Days is pure fun for anyone, but most especially for fans of Pierce Brosnan, Julia Nickson or Eric Idle. All three of them have great fun with the mishaps of Phileas Fogg and his companions. Peter Ustinov is also a delight to watch. Isn't he always?
If you enjoy not-so-realistic adventure with an upbeat ending, you are going to love this one!
Excellent cinematography, music, costumes and dialog make this a most enjoyable mini-series - despite its length!
There are still some people out there who do not realize that Pierce Brosnan is an excellent comedy actor! Get an eyefull! You won't regret it!
great - lots of fun to watch.......2007-01-16
This was almost the complete series. There were a fews scenes that were in the original that were cut out. The lighting is a bit dark in some places, but overall it was still a lot of fun to watch.
Around the World in 80 Days (1989).......2006-07-09
I enjoyed the movie. I had to break it up because it is long but I enjoyed the actors, especially Mr. Pernell Roberts. The quality of the DVD is great. There were no hangups on the DVD. Well worth purchasing and watching in my opion.
Disappointing Journey.......2006-03-29
There are three major versions of the Verne novel on DVD: the 1950s with David Niven and Cantinflas and everyone else; the recent version with Jackie Chan; and this. Of the three, Jackie Chan's is the most enjoyable. It's light-hearted, full of laughs and action and it moves right along. The Niven version is so incredibly heavy and pondering it's amazing it hasn't sunk into oblivion. The best thing about it is the star-searching. That leaves this patchwork quilt with Pierce Prosnan and Eric Idle.
This was a three-part miniseries, and boy, does it show! It's terribly fragnented with obvious commercial breaks every 15 minutes or so. As a result, no head of steam can be built up. The transfer quality sucks, too. But the major question is this: Why did they bother? Why spend the money they obviously spent to do a remake that doesn't improve on the Niven version? Just so Pierce Brosnan could have something to do while waiting for James Bond? And why hire an English comic to play a Frenchman? Peter Ustinov (criticized elsewhere for his over-the-top hamminess in this) saves the day...he and the wonderful old character actors at The Refom Club and the Bank of England.
In all, I was disappointed greatly.
The quality of this movie is bad.......2006-03-26
If you are expecting a dvd high quality transfer, you will be disappointed. The entire 4 and 1/2 hour dvd is just like watching a poor vhs quality tape. It's very grainy and faded. It even flickers occasionally just like a vhs tape. The movie itself moves along too slowly and has the feel of the type of movie you could fall alseep to late at night. Get the 2004 Jackie Chan version. It is highly entertaining!

Great way to start your collection of Best Pictures.......2007-02-03
This is the set of 18 Best Picture winners on DVD that Warner Home Video controlled the rights to as of Feb. 2005, and spans the time period 1929-1992. Some of them hold up over time, and others were given the award because of technical achievements that no longer seem important. I'll go through each one and give my opinion:
Broadway Melody of 1929 - This was the first "talkie" to win the award. The screenplay is a mediocre love story, but the song and dance numbers are good. There's even a musical number in Technicolor - "Wedding of the Painted Doll".
Grand Hotel - Won in 1932 and contained a great ensemble cast about the personal lives of guests in a fancy Berlin hotel. This is a great one that still is worthy viewing today.
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) - Probably the best of all the pictures about the famous mutiny. Still good viewing today. An odd aside - all of the nominees for best actor that did not win were from this film - Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, and Charles Laughton.
The Great Ziegfield (1936) - After the Hays code was fully in effect, the personal aspects of Ziegfield's life had to be modified for the screen. Still, a great movie with a great performance by William Powell as the famous showman.
The Life of Emile Zola (1937) - One of those period pieces that just didn't grab me. It is a very skillfully done film, very artistic, and Paul Muni gives a tremendous performance in the title role. It's hard to believe the articulate and gentile Emile Zola is being portrayed by the same actor who was equally convincing in "Scarface".
Gone with the Wind (1939) - This movie charts the life of a Southern belle who always wanted what she didn't have and took for granted what she did have as she lives through the Civil War and reconstruction. It is the most popular film of all time and probably the biggest money-maker if you factor in inflation. It was shown in movie theatres until it made its TV debut in 1976.
Mrs. Miniver (1942) - This is a good film, and it has great acting, but it is one of those films that probably won because of the times. It depicts how the British coped while under seige during World War II as experienced by one British family headed by Mrs. Miniver.
Casablanca (1943) - This one probably won because of the wartime theme, but it is a great piece of moviemaking that just gets better with time. The chemistry between Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart just oozes off the screen. It's more what's not said than what is in this film. The fact that Bogart didn't win best actor was one of the great injustices of all time.
An American in Paris (1951) - Of course the point of this film not the plot, it is Gene Kelly's dancing, which is fabulous as always. It inspired the quickly thrown together and even more popular "Singin In the Rain".
Around the World in 80 Days (1956) - A fun adventure, David Niven is great, and how they got all of those stars to play bit parts I'll never know. However, it really doesn't hold up as a great movie 50 years after the fact.
Gigi (1958) - The academy award winner in the year of my birth just does not inspire today. There are a couple of good songs, but not many. Plus the screenplay is antiquated and outright campy by today's standards.
Ben-Hur (1959) - One of those great Bible-era epics of the 50's. Even though it is a story on a large scale, it is all of the small scale stories going on that make it great - revenge, love, loyalty, loss.
My Fair Lady (1964) - One of the great musicals starring Rex Harrison in one of his greatest and most amusing roles. Nobody did stuffy British low-key comedy like Rex. He was robbed when it came to best actor, but fortunately the Academy rectified the situation a few years later.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) - Jack Nicholson is a rebel confined to a mental institution. When he doesn't conform, the evil nurse Ratchett has him lobotimized. A great film that will stir emotions even today.
Chariots of Fire (1981) - I personally love this film about the 1924 Olympic games and the conflict between God, country, and conscience seen through the eyes of two men - one a Christian who wants to be a missionary, the other Jewish who wants to be an insider in British society. It's a love it or hate it kind of film - either you find the internal struggles of these men compelling, or you'll find it torture to sit through.
Amadeus (1984) - Another of the modern era Oscars where you either love the message and love the film, or it puts you to sleep. I really loved this one too, partly because Mozart has always interested me, and partly because Salieri was such a ridiculous creature thinking he could best God by destroying Mozart. Didn't he ever realize that the fact that he recognized Mozart's talent before everyone else did was a talent in itself? If you can't build Microsoft yourself, then the next best thing was to have bought stock in it in 1975.
Driving Miss Daisy (1989) - The story of a wealthy elderly woman and her driver from 1948 up to the mid-70's. In spite of the difference in their races and the place - Georgia - they have much in common and slowly become friends. She is Jewish and he is Black in a time and place that wasn't ordinarily welcoming to either group of people. This is a sentimental favorite of mine, plus there's some good comic one-liners in it too.
Unforgiven (1992) - A different kind of Western in which Clint Eastwood wins his first award for Best Director. Eastwood is out to avenge the scarring of a prostitute in return for money when the justice the sheriff metes out on the offending cowboy is just not satisfactory to the prostitute or her friends. Eastwood plays an ex-criminal widower trying to make a go of farming when this assignment lands in his lap. In the end, he doesn't have a hard time finding his "inner killer". A really great film. Who'd have thought in 1965 that Ramrod Rowdy Yates had it in him?
This package is a good value at eleven dollars per Oscar winner, especially when you consider one of those Oscar winners is Gone with the Wind. Plus it has a good sampling of Oscar winners from all genres up to 1992. Depending on how you feel about the more modern Oscar winners (post 1965) that are usually slower, more thoughtful films, you may or may not feel the same. To me the only real dud is Gigi.
Also note that if you buy this set, "Studio Classics Best Picture Collection", and the new "Best Picture Collection", you'll have 29 of the soon to be 79 best picture winners. Not a bad start on your collection.
My only real complaints are that there have been four changes that should be incorporated into the pack to really make it complete as of Spring 2007 based on what is available, although it might require a price increase.
1. Ben-Hur is now available in a 4 disc special edition that includes the silent version of the film.
2. Cimarron, Best Picture 1930-1931, was released on DVD in 2006 by Warner Home Video and should be included.
3. After this pack was released "Million Dollar Baby" and "The Departed" won Best Picture for 2004 and 2006, respectively. These films are not included.
I'm really just pointing out minor flaws because, compared to all of the other studios, Warners has done the best job of putting all of the Best Picture winners they control into one attractively priced package.
Eighteen of the best movies of all time.......2005-09-26
This set contains 18 Best Picture winners from the Warner Video library. A few of them are fairly basic, with limited extras (Broadway Melody, Grand Hotel), while others are multi-disc deluxe editions (Gone with the Wind, Ben Hur). If you're looking to get your collection off to a start, with some of the all-time classics, I haven't seen a better boxed set than this one.
Best Picture Oscar Collection - fantastic present.......2005-09-21
This made my father very happy - has all the golden favourites and is great value.
good deal but not in collectible condition.......2005-06-11
It's a bunch of oscar winning movies from warner brothers with a great discount. but collectors beware of this set :
1. First of all, most of the items are not sealed. many of them looks like new, but some are not brand new, at least look like used!
2. I talked with 3 persons who purchased this item. all of them had complains about ruptures at the edge of some boxes which had caused with a blade or a sharp instrument.
3. there is not a huge outer box. only a wrap around all items.
after those negative points, lets say that, all of the DVDs are the best releases of each item. my word is, it's a good deal but don't expect to receive all of them in collectible condition! I don't want to blame warner but it seems that some of these DVDs are clean returned to market items!
This is a great deal; looks like they fixed the problems,,,.......2005-05-28
I purchased this set when the price was $140. However, I did not get Casablanca or Cuckoo's net SE's, but after I contacted AMAZON twice and waited for a while, they corrected the problem to my full satisfaction! I have never been happier with their service!
But, this is a great set because it has 18 of the best picture winners.
It has some of the best ones, and all the discs are the top of the line editions! way to go!!!
Now, if they could opnly get the last three best picture winners on DVD, I'd have them all!

Description
In this epic mini-series based on Jules Verne's novel, Englishman Phileas Fogg (Pierce Brosnan) prides himself on his clockwork discipline. Fogg is so confident of his ability to beat the clock that he bets a small fortune with members of the Reform Club that he can use modern transportation methods to circle the globe in 80 days! With servant Jean Passepartout (Eric Idle), Fogg soon finds himself crossing war-torn Paris, traversing the jungles of India and Burma, and dueling with Jesse James on the American prairie! And if that weren't complicated enough, Fogg is the prime suspect in a London bank robbery, and Detective Wilbur Fix (Peter Ustinov) is pursuing Fogg and Passepartout, in hopes of returning Fogg to England to be arrested-and to collect the reward money!
The voyage even brings an unforeseen responsibility when Fogg rescues the beautiful Princess Aouda (Julia Nickson) and she arouses long-dormant feelings in Fogg's bachelor heart. Can Fogg acknowledge those feelings? Will he win the bet? Will he give Fix the slip? The ending is one you don't want to miss!

this sucks.......2006-09-24
Don't see this. see the version with Jackie Chan. It is much more exiting because there is karate. Plus the new version with jackie is hillarious.
nice and crude
MISSING A LOT ON THE DVD.......2005-09-09
If you enjoyed this movie like I did on Tv don't buy the DVD. It is missing some of the best parts of the film. I would rate this a 0 on the star scale if I could.
Around the World in 80 Days (1989 version).......2005-07-25
This 2 disc 5 hour version of Around the World in 80 Days was pretty much like the others -(The original Mike Todd version starring David Niven- and the newest one starring Jackie Chan.)
However, if you are a Pierce Brosnan fan, this is 5 delightful hours of watching delicious Pierce Brosnan. His "English" behavior is quite "proper" and amusing, and he carries this movie easily.
The "All Star Cast" was very enjoyable, too.
Caveat Emptor.......2005-07-20
The worst series transfer I have ever seen. First, the color is
poor, orange skin, etc. More importantly, the producers have
included the endless repeats of logos/credits/overview scenes,
used in the original telecast, adding up to almost an hour of "noise". Almost impossible to edit while watching, for your viewing pleasure I recommend that lovers of this series, of which I am one, tape the excellent 5 hour version frequently shown on cable TV without interruptions, and make your own video disc. The most delightful version of this work, featuring great erformances by Eric Idle and Pierce Brosnan, it deserves a better fate. Avoid this DVD version like the plague.
The Best 80 Days Adaption Ever!!!.......2005-01-30
With an amazing cast and beautiful story, this miniseries is awesome! True to the original story, this miniseries has everything you would like and is just as good as the 1956 version with David Niven. I should let you know that nothing has been cut out from the original. You just have to press the skip button during the credits to see part 2.

Customer Reviews:
Single disc is a no-no for two movies out of five.......2005-02-15
All the dvd's here if bought individually would amount to far more than is sold at this price. All the dvds are also excellent quality and in the case of Around the World in 80 Days it is even the 2 disc special edition. The one bad thing about this set and the only bad thing probably is the dvd of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest which is the single disc edition with widescreen and full format on two sides, this is disappointing considering there is a very nice 2 disc special edition available and could easily have been included in the set. There is also an Unforgiven 2 disc special edition which also is replaced in this set by the single disc version. Therefore if you care about having such things as "special features" than I suggest you not buy this set. However if you love collecting movies than this and the 2 other Warner Brother's oscar collection sets (drama, and musicals) is a must for you.

Old Fashioned, Boring, Waste of Money, Terrible.......2006-12-31
My 2-year old daughter got "Mickey Saves Santa" DVD for her birthday and absolutely loves it. I purchased this DVD thinking it would be similar, but no! Mickey's Around the World in 80 days looks like it was produced 30 years ago - very old fashioned animation and the 'educational' aspect is also very dated. I give this 1 star because my 2-year old would not watch it at all despite it saying it is appropriate for 2-6 year olds. An older child may find it more interesting. It seems to me that Disney is re-hashing old material and packaging it in a new box. Skip this DVD and get "Mickey Saves Santa" which is highly appropriate for a preschooler, with up-to-date animation and 3 wonderful interactive stories.
Overpriced.......2005-11-08
Hitting in an "educational" DVD! Disney please stop!!! What "leading educators" reviewed this and shame on them!
Recycled cartoons interspersed with very few questions/learning facts, done in cheap animation. Cheap pop up Mickey pops up on world map saying hello/goodbye is the education highlight. Other than that they pause the cartoon and ask a few boring questions. My son was bored as he kept looking for animated Mickey. The 80Days cartoon is ok, but I didn't purchase a "cartoon" I purchased an Educational DVD. Disney does not have the "magic" of teaching.
Great movie for two-year- olds!.......2005-03-26
My son loves this movie. Mickey not only introduces the world map, he also teaches a little about different cultures, music, and says hello in each language. Then he teaches different climates and helps figure out which animals live in them. There's also a little lesson about friendship, plus a lot of extras like games. We love this movie!
