With each passing year bringing another high-profile rock reunion, prompted as often by balloon mortgage payments as any real artistic hunger, old fans could be excused for greeting 1997's announcement that the big Mac was back with skepticism: at their commercial zenith, Fleetwood Mac had offered superb transatlantic pop-rock with the added spice of a remarkable back-story, but the band's long decline and underwhelming later personnel shifts didn't bode well.

Such guarded expectations make the musical punch of The Dance all the more impressive, and enable the meticulously produced concert special to genuinely surprise. The band's musicianship--the one constant between the original, late '60s English blues band and its platinum '70s lineup featuring guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks--is in peak form, buttressed by a discreet auxiliary of additional musicians. Even with the hired guns, though, it's the rock-solid rhythm section of founders Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, and Buckingham's impassioned playing that strike sparks. Always a dynamic guitarist, Buckingham brings feverish intensity to both group classics and solo turns such as "Go Insane."

Both familiar hits and new songs (including the solid "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her") further confirm that this isn't a rote exercise--the band sounds fully engaged. Buckingham, Nicks, and the elegant Christine McVie retain their vocal charm (although Nicks has clearly lost her upper register). And the sense of old wounds healed, and older affections acknowledged, gives true poignancy to the set's high mark, a brilliant live version of "Silver Springs," a truly haunting Rumours-era B-side that proves deeply moving. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SOUND AND VISUALS MAKE THIS DVD A MUST!.......2007-07-08

I am a fan of Fleetwood Mac,but never went to see them live. I would have liked to see the band at the top of their game, but this DVD gives you a very good idea of what that must of been like. The band is in top form playing a wide range of the material. The only time I was disappointed Stevie Nicks would not reach for the high notes like on the studio recordings. This may be due to her not being able to do it any more or just wanting to change it up a bit. Either way when you know songs as well as these you want to hear them done the way you remember them. Aside from that one small complaint, the sound is rich and clear and the transfer is very good. The band really conects with each other and you feel like you are part of something special when your watching this. If you like concert DVD's,you should have this in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Lindsey and Stevie.......2007-06-13

I saw this DVD being played at a Bose outlet store and could not move from the performance being showed. Watching Fleetwood Mac perform "Silver Spring" was a real eye opener! It was as if Stevie and Lindsey were singing only to each other. Wonderful music!

5 out of 5 stars Top rate DVD well worth the money........2007-04-03

This band is at the top of their game, and the guitar work is superb. The surround sound top quality.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Mac.......2007-03-25

This is excellent. They sound great and this is a great show, especially with the bonus appearance of the USC marching band at the end. Includes extra tracks not on the CD. Most notable is "Gold Dust Woman", which is my favorite from the whole concert. The sound is very good, with one side in Dolby 5.1. A great final appearance from the band.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome concert performance!.......2007-02-07

My wife & I first had the opportunity to view this DVD at a party several years ago but did not know the title. The host payed this DVD in the background and it was so incredible that my wife and I gravitated to the family room where it was playing. I had no idea at the time that dvd's of concerts were even available so this was a real surprise to actually see them up close at their very best! Our memories of this dvd were so strong that we recently searched and found it available on Amazon.com.

We have always loved the music of Fleetwood Mac but had never had an opportunity to see them in concert-well this is even better. The photography is really well done so you really see the musicians playing their instruments (up close) as their part in the song comes up. Great close ups so you really can get into the concert. The pinnacle of the concert is when the USC marching band comes onto the stage as Tusk begins to play...WOW!!! You can't image how good it sounds!

Even after watching the dvd several times it is still very enjoyable to play as we clean the house or cook. Not only is this the best of Fleetwood Mac but you can watch their amazing talant be shared with some lucky college band members who, I am sure, had the experience of a lifetime! This is our favorite concert DVD. I know you will enjoy it if you like Fleetwood Mac at all.

If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Boyd's 1973 "authorized" tribute adequately sanctifies the legend. Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply through well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical about their days with Jimi, but nothing is more eloquent than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy black and white on the Ready Steady Go TV show, classic footage of Monterey, Woodstock (yes, "The Star-Spangled Banner"), and the Isle of Wight festivals to an acoustic 12- string rendition of "Hear My Train a' Comin'," Hendrix the musician speaks for himself.

But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most insightful profile of Hendrix the man. The circumstances surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon (girlfriend at the time Monika Dannemann gets only a few seconds of screen time). Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends (including Linda Keith, who "discovered" him in New York and brought him to England), and fellow musicians all take second place to the music itself. The most sensible quote comes from Little Richard, who proves once and for all that he's utterly bonkers when he says of Jimi's music: "At times he made my big toes shoot up into my boot." --Mark Walker, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars A Time Machine.......2007-04-05

This video was like a time machine. It took me back to the early 70's. A glimpse of a bygone era of Rock and Roll. The musical performances were wonderful with good quality video and audio. Jimi's acoustic performance of Waitin' for a train was worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars It was a Christmas gift.......2007-01-24

My coworker mentioned her Jimi Hendrix DVD had been ruined by her kid, so I thought it would make for a great Christmas gift to get her one. She was very pleased and even went out and bought a new dvd player.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a good light introduction to Hendrix, but not more...........2006-12-11

I believe that this documentary is likely to appeal to two kinds of people. First, those that don't know a thing about Jimi Hendrix, and that will be able to watch an engaging introduction to his life and music that doesn't go to far but entertains. Secondly, those fans that want to have absolutely everything that has to do with Hendrix, and that will treasure this dvd.

On the other hand, I don't think that those spectators that simply want to watch an excellent documentary about a musical icon will be happy with this one, because even though it is good, it is far from outstanding or even very good. It doesn't have enough information about Jimi Hendrix, and it lacks depth. It is entertaining and a good light introduction to Hendrix, but not more.

All in all, I can say that this documentary is good, and deserves at least 3 starts out of 5, but not more. If you expect a documentary about a musician that will make you watch it again and again, give "No direction home" (by Scorcese, about Dylan) a try.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further..........2006-11-13

I'll confess up front that I have an emotional attachment to this movie which will color this review - I saw it several times at the cinema during my teenage years, and owned the soundtrack (which i played to death).

Having said that, this is the best Hendrix biography I've seen, & I've seen all of them (I think). The live footage is a cherry-picked selection of Hendrix's best onstage moments (and let's face it, if he only gave the world the ~2.5 mins of Monterey opener "Rock Me Baby", it would be enough), and as others have already said, the 12-string Hear My Train a'Comin' is the jewel in the crown.

The interviews are secondary, but they represent a fascinating snapshot of life in 1973. They are of Jimi's time (or close enough) and by those who knew him. They are incisive, contradictory, insightful, and quite often hilarious. Talking about Hendrix seems to bring out a sincerity and honesty in most of these people which is compelling. The "Ghetto Fighters" are great, and Little Richard is - well, Little Richard.

Buy it.

Elvis hadn't dyed his hair a permanent midnight black yet in Follow That Dream, which is another way of saying this is still the point in his career when he was making movies, not just Elvis Presley vehicles. Elvis road-trips with his crabby, anti-government pop (Arthur O'Connell) and an adopted brood to a Florida beach, which by a legal quirk they can homestead. The authorities and some fairly unbelievable gangsters would like to stop them. The songs are undistinguished but not awful, the scenery is nice, and Elvis--looking well-fed and relaxed--shows off good comedic chops doing a dumb-guy shtick. Screenwriter Charles Lederer and director Gordon Douglas are a class act by Presley picture standards, keeping the sitcom-style plot moving along. No fancy clothes or cars in this one, just Elvis and some beachcombing and an old git-tar, and not a bad time-killer for all that. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Elvis' best movie.......2007-06-27

I believe this is the best movie that Elvis ever made.
Has a few good laughs in it, and Elvis sings one of my favorite
Elvis songs "Follow that Dream". If you like Elvis, watch this
movie.

5 out of 5 stars Happiness is -To Follow that Dream.......2007-03-29

The story of a squatter family is a rollicking success. Arthur O'Connell as the pappy is hilarious. The dialogue is cleaver and Elvis plays the roll of an innocent, not very well educated young beefcake to perfection. The laughter starts as the movie begins to roll and continues throughout. There are not many songs in the movie by Elvis does sing the beautiful "Angel" to a starry eyed Anne Helm. I found that the 97 minutes flew by and the movie had a "feel good" effect on me. The true sign of good entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Follow That Dream.......2007-01-18

This is a delightful musical comedy depicting that truth and honesty is a virtue that can win out over greed and corruption. A great film for the whole famiily which will leave you humming its beautiful music

4 out of 5 stars A great family film........2006-11-12

Based on the book Pioneer Go Home, Follow That Dream is an innocent romp through the wilds of mid-century Florida. Ride along with the Kwimper family as they confound everyone from the politicos to the mob on their way to the American dream. A suitable gift for Mom's birthday.

5 out of 5 stars A whole new light on time tables 1+1 equals 2, 2 +2 equals 4, and so on!!.......2006-03-21

I really enjoyed this movie. I personally rank it third after my all time favourite Blue Hawaii coming in at number one, and G.I. Blues at number two.

I love the story line, it's refreshing to watch, and is one the whole family can enjoy together.

If you don't have a copy already in your collection, you should buy one, as you won't be disappointed.

Like the music it celebrates, Round Midnight is long on atmosphere, short on formal structure, alert and open to improvisation, making this 1986 drama the most authentic glimpse of jazz yet filmed. Its subject, Dale Turner (played by Dexter Gordon), is a composite of brilliant but bruised jazz warriors who left America behind for self-imposed European exile, finding a more tolerant and appreciative audience while never completely eluding their private demons. Drugs and drink have battered the tall, laconic saxophonist, whose diffident, somewhat distracted manner only partly conceals a deeper exhaustion as he plays a 1959 engagement in a Parisian club and tries to stay sober. His burnished solos drift behind the tempo with a languor that can't be fully explained as a point of style. But when an ardent, impoverished French fan (François Cluzet) intercepts his idol and then offers him simple acts of kindness, the gesture inspires a brief but glowing second wind in the aging musician, reflected in his playing. Even as the film contemplates Turner's return to his homeland as a portent of his own death, his moments on the Parisian bandstand suggest a glimpse of redemption.

If Turner's frail character echoes real-life ex-pats like Bud Powell and Lester Young, director Bertrand Tavernier's insistence upon casting the role with veteran tenor player Dexter Gordon breathes startling authenticity into the figure. Gordon's own drug arrests and an extended idyll abroad give him direct access to Turner's isolation, and Tavernier elicits a natural but compelling performance that earned Gordon (who died in 1990) an Academy Award nomination. Likewise, the director cast his cinematic band with world-class musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter, and shot these sequences as live performances. Hancock's score deservedly won both British and American Academy Awards, as well as a French César. --Sam Sutherland

    Description

Inside the Blue Note nightclub one night in 1959 Paris, an aged, ailing jazzman coaxes an eloquent wail from his tenor sax. Outside, a young Parisian too broke to buy a glass of wine strains to hear those notes. Soon they will form a friendship that sparks a final burst of genius in director Bertrand Tavernier

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars 'Round Midnight.......2007-07-06

avernier's vivid, sensitive ode to the brilliant exile musicians who flocked to his country in the fifties to escape racism (and find a more appreciative fan base) might well be the greatest jazz film of all time. Dedicated to Bud Powell and Lester Young, "Midnight" lovingly evokes the mood and atmosphere of the bebop scene (Herbie Hancock's Oscar-winning score was recorded live, on the set), as well as the dark and murky mindset of many of its practitioners. Adding to the authenticity, Tavernier cast real-life musicians to fill the roles, including sax great Gordon, who received an Oscar nomination for his devastating portrayal of the laconic, raspy-voiced Turner.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie .......2007-05-12

Buy this movie now !! Dexter is great. Music is awesome. Acting is very real.

3 out of 5 stars come on & blow gabriel blow!.......2007-05-12

musician dexter gordon stars as the prototypical jazz man in this paean to its type. while im usually bummed out by jazz-based movies (these people do take themselves waaaay too seriously), this one is saved by the honest portrayal essayed by amateur actor gordon, and a strong score. of its ilk, its as good as ive seen.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Story Even For Non-Jazz Fans.......2006-04-21

This is jazz-fan's delight: tons of jazz, featuring tenor saxophone with some bebop thrown in. Most of the music is nice mellow stuff and interesting to hear, even to a non-jazz buff like me.

The music and interesting story made me purchase the DVD, which I have subsequently watched few a couple of times. The story is pretty laid-back, a simple tale of an American alcoholic sax great playing in France who reforms because of a French fan who cares about him.

Dexter Gordon's unique voice makes helps him become an interesting character to hear and the real-life jazz great proves to be a decent actor, too. Francois Cluzet plays the admirer who goes out of his way to help his idol. Gabrielle Haker is pleasant to watch as Cluzet's young daughter. She always seems to have a pleasant smile on her face.

I don't why this film was rated "R" because there is no sex, no nudity, little profanity except for several "mf's," which must be the reason for the rating. Nevertheless, it's a pretty tame movie.

Even though the story is a bit slow and would probably bore the heck out of most young people today, I found it entertaining and definitely different. It's just a nice, gentle story, whether you are a fan of jazz or not.

    5 out of 5 stars It's more than a movie about jazz........2005-12-30

Round Midnight is the most delicate, sensitive and deep movie I've ever watched.
It's a movie that goes much beyond jazz and musicians.
It's a movie about love, about the possibilities, about us, human beigns.
And amazingly played by two INCREDIBLE actors: Dexter Gordon and François Cluzet. Dexter Gordon was a special human being, he was an angel. I really belive this. It was up to Bertrand Tavernier to see it and he did. That's why the movie is a masterpiece, it's a combination of untouchble and unique souls.

It's not a comprehensive survey of the American musical theater, but Broadway: The Golden Age, by the Legends Who Were There is an invaluable and moving salute to the art form composed of interviews with the people who were there in the 1940s through the 1960s. There are too many to list, but they include John Raitt, Angela Lansbury, Hume Cronyn, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Carol Channing, Jerry Orbach, Robert Goulet, Robert Morse (even he's gotten old!), Jerry Herman, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Stephen Sondheim, and Harold Prince. There are also some rare performance clips, such as Ethel Merman in Gypsy, Patricia Morison in Kiss Me Kate, and Angela Lansbury in Mame, as well as more familiar television performances, but very few film versions (for either authenticity or rights reasons). Director Rick McKay's focus, however, is on evocative stills, a few too many shots of the city, and most of all the words from the stars themselves. Fact is, because Broadway shows are a live performance medium, there simply isn't a lot of footage available, which is why it's a treat--no, it's an obligation--that we hear the stories from the people themselves. It's the best way the form will survive. After a bit of a slow start, the interviews cover the culture of Broadway, hanging out at Walgreen's and Sardi's, taking a show on the road, and thoughts about the current generation. (Broadway in this case refers to the location in New York rather than the musical-theater genre, so non-musicals are a major part of the discussion.)

Broadway: The Golden Age had a limited theatrical run in 2004, and there will be inevitable comparisons to Broadway: The American Musical, the six-hour series that played on PBS in the fall of that same year. The PBS series is much longer (especially counting the DVDs' bonus interviews) and unlike The Golden Age, it attempts to be a comprehensive survey of 100 years of American musical theater. The ambition is admirable, but often hard to live up to. The Golden Age offers more rare footage, and a more powerful sense of nostalgia throughout the interviews. On the downside, there's no real structure to the film other than grouping the interviews by random subject, and director McKay relies too much on his own personal experiences as a jumping-off point. But it's a worthwhile, often passionate film that captures a priceless glimpse at a way of life as lived by so many memorable figures whose like will never be seen again. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL!.......2007-02-10

This DVD is for everyone who loves musical theatre. If you were fortunate enough to personally experience "The Golden Age", you will love this reminiscent journey. If you've seen only contemporary productions, you will be thrilled with this remarkable history as told by those who lived it. Rick McKay put his heart and soul in this production.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Any Theater Lover.......2007-01-10

I saw this and immediately bought a copy for myself and several others. It is an absolute gem, something any theater lover will want to have in their permanent collection. Not only is it wonderfully put together, but there is footage in there of scenes from plays otherwise impossible to see, of people who made Broadway history who are long gone but their legacy lives on. It is beautifully made and I cherish it.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2006-11-16

I really enjoyed behind-the-scenes and interviews with the actors, etc. However, (with the exception of Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire) I thought that all of the "great" plays featured appeared very "stagey". I would like more DVD's like this that feature primarily interviews instead of highlights of the plays.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of Broadway.......2006-09-28

A terrific documentary. Even if you have seen it on PBS, you need the dvd to view the great extra material.

    5 out of 5 stars Broadway's Golden Age.......2006-07-18

This DVD is a must-see for those of you who are interested in the best of Broadway. However, this DVD shows musicals only, so if you're interested in other than musicals you can give this DVD a miss. Many of the interviewers are of great interest, however.

Elvis's outfits are impressive in 1967's Clambake, especially a groovy, belted sport coat and a cream-colored suit covered with cowhide-style stitching. The costumes are more creative than the soundtrack, which is heavy with the mindlessness of late-period Elvis movies. As he sings "Confidence" (an obvious rip-off of the Oscar-winning "High Hopes"), you can almost see Elvis batting out "Just shoot me" in Morse code with his eyelids. The only decent tune has the star crooning a nice, lonesome version of the standard "You Don't Know Me." This one's set in Florida, but with none of the scenic fun of his Hawaii pictures. He plays a rich oilman's son pretending to be a water-skiing instructor, with Shelley Fabares (a three-time Presley costar) as the girl. The camp highlight is an ensemble number with go-go girls helping Elvis fix a speedboat, which is just about as far from Sun Studios as you can get. --Robert Horton

    Description

Elvis Presley sizzles as a lovelorn million-heir in this riveting and romantic rock 'n' roll romp. Vying for the attentions of the lovely Shelley Fabares ("Coach"), Elvis finds himself caught up in arivalry with playboy Bill Bixby ("The Incredible Hulk") "against a tuneful background of comedy, romance and speedboat racing" (Film Daily)! Clambake is "pleasing escape entertainment" (Boxoffice) and the wildest party to hit the beach since they invented the beach ball! It's a hip version of The Prince and the Pauper as Elvis relinquishes his oil-baron father's fortune and trades identities with a penniless water ski instructor (Will Hutchins) to learn about life from the bottom up. Suddenly short on money but long on determination, he repairs a radicallydesigned powerboat in order to win the regatta and the affection of a girl who's determined to marry rich!

5 out of 5 stars Good, Clean Fun.......2007-06-03

Anyone who is a fan of Elvis Presley's or of comedies should know this is one good clean fun type of movie. It is not meant to be taken seriously, unlike other Elvis movies like Wild In The Country, King Creole, Flaming Star, Change Of Habit, The Trouble With Girls (and how to get in to it) all of which show a different Elvis then one may be accustomed to seeing. Like in Blue Hawaii or Viva Las Vegas. This is a good fun movie for everyone.

    5 out of 5 stars not a serious film . . . duh.......2004-10-19

If you are a romantic at heart and don't take it too seriously (why would you? It's an Elvis movie . . .) you may love this one. Some of the songs may not be chart toppers, but the lyrics add to and help define the story.

They say Elvis wasn't very enthusiastic about doing this one - maybe that explains why he seems more real in this one and not overdone.

This is a story about love, believing in yourself and being true to your beliefs. I first saw it when I was a kid and took these values to heart.

    Lighten up and enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Can I give this 6 stars?.......2004-07-31

"Clambake" is by far the greatest piece of cinema seen this side of Memphis. I love Elvis! While the costumes are a tad sketchy in this film (this includes Elvis' suit that looks like a baseball and the transparent cover-up on the silver bikini girl), the songs (music *and* lyrics), are stellar. Scintillating, if you will. I wish I could find a cd-soundtrack! I have seen this film at least a dozen times. In fact, the first time I saw it, I watched it 3 days in a row, showing it to all my friends, who have since fallen in love with the cinematic genius that is "Clambake."

Shelley Fabares turns in an Oscar-worthy performance. Katharine Hepburn stole the award that rightly belongs to Ms. Fabares.

Will this movie be loved by you? I have "C-O-N-F-I-D-ence" that it will be!

    2 out of 5 stars Floridians beware.......2004-06-18

I've enjoyed some of Elvis' movies like Viva Las Vegas, Blue Hawaii, and Fun in Acapulco. I received Clambake as a gift to add to my collection, and I thought I'd like it especially because it took place in Miami, where I'm from.

Sadly, this was not a very good movie. The late-60s styles were comical, and the young days of "Christine" from "Coach" and Bill Bixby from "The Hulk" were amusing. However, the obvious closed sets, corny acting and oddball music interludes kept me asking why was this movie even produced.

The final insult to injury... Elvis and his girl drive into the Florida sunset... with mountains in the background!?? The only mountains in Miami are trash dumps so this was obviously shot in California and poorly passed off as Miami Beach.

So I give it 2 stars: one for Elvis and one for the real Florida.

4 out of 5 stars If you like EP, you'll love this one.......2004-05-20

Like every 1966-67 Elvis movie, you have pretty girls in slight outfits, EP loves a girl that another wants (and usually has for a while anyway), EP has to fight someone, EP sings with children, EP has to win something (ie: auto race, boat race, high diving, etc., EP sings really dumb songs but usually has at least one really good one (You Don't Know Me and The Girl I Never Loved), lots of Memphis Mafia in the background (Red West, Ice Cream Man, Charlie Hodge the Barber, Joe and Richard in bit parts at the Clambake - note no clams shown) and EP gets the girl. Las Vegas, Hawaii, Mexico, Florida, anywhere they are all the same and that includes spending 2 hours just looking at this wonderfully handsome man. If you love just seeing him this one is for you.

The miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream begins in the 1940s, when Joseph Jackson (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) and Katherine (Angela Bassett) meet and fall in love, and ends in the 1980s, when their sons reunite for the 1983 Victory Tour that brought them back together as the Jacksons. During the first part, "The Early Years," the couple starts a family, and although times are tough, Joseph still finds time to play music on the side. When he discovers that his sons have inherited the same talent, the Jackson 5 are born. They sign with Motown and start churning out the gold records. The second part, "The Success Years," begins in 1970 at the peak of their fame, but by 1976, the hits have started to dry up. If the acting is uneven and the story somewhat sanitized, Bassett is affecting, and the series includes Emmy-winning choreography and a combination of original and re-created material, ranging from "I Want You Back" (1969) to Michael Jackson's "Beat It" (from 1982's multi-platinum Thriller). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This movie is so long, but it is so entertaining!! The acting is great and so is the music. Even if you don't like Michael Jackson, this movie will still entertain you

    4 out of 5 stars Hilton-Jacobs steals the movie.......2007-04-29

Very good mini series/movie. Lawrence Hilton Jacobs as Joe Jackson was very underrated , his role as Joe Jackson rivals Laraunce Fishburns as Ike Turner. I think it is funny that years later Angela Basset who plays the mother in this movie plays Tina Turner with Fishburn. I wonder how she compares the 2 performances. If this was a wide release movie and not a tv mini series Hilton-Jacobs would of been nominated for a Oscar.

Basset is just ok in this movie. She is completely overwhelmed by Hilton-Jacobs and the people who play Micheal. And she is really a annoying character. She sits around and cries when her husband is abusing the kids. I am sure if she had left this man years earlier the chldren would of not had been as mess up as they are. Being that Jermaine co writes this movie it is a interesting portrait he paints of his mother. Who is a sympathetic character but at the same time a weak mother. Katherine only leaves when she over hears Joe and his girlfriend on the phone, but she stayed when he was beating and abusing the kids. You hear her yelling at Joe every once in a while but she does. It was a interesting scene when she is on the phone with Joe again mad at something and you look around the dinner table and fans are sitting there eatng dinner with the mother and the other kids. Very weird.
Margret Avery who plays her mother looks more like her sister, then her mother particulary when Katherine is a adult with children.
Another intersting point about Jermaine writing this is the way he portrays his relationship to Hazel Gordy. We all knew at the time it had nothing to do with love and she was considered a very plain looking woman. It was a joke and a very opportunistic move on his part. But in this movie you would of thought this was Romeo and Juliet romance. I have to respect that Jermaine did not tear her down. Good for him.

The various performers playing the Jacksons through the years were very good but none had much to do except the the actors who played Michael who were very good. The one who played him as a adult was spot on, it was very tragic that he died soon after the movie was made. To me the one who played the second to last Michael really looked and moved like him when he was on the stage. Remember this movie is suppose to be about the original Jacksons, the ones in the hall of fame, the ones that blew the socks off of everyone when they first came on the scene, not Janet, who I thnk Michael sings for, I swear.

I like the way they touch on the various rivals of the Jackson Five like the Osmonds. There a few of them like the Sylvers. None of these rivals came close to Michael. The had a few hits but that was about it.

I remember Michael when he first came on the scene. We are the same age. There has never been anyone who was like him as a child and teenage performer. And no one since. Even now I am amazed when I see him in old footage and hear his voice. I cry looking at them because of how sad it is to see how he has fallen in the last 15 years. Prince and him are the same age look at Prince now and look at Michael. A sad story. This movie will show you when he was in his prime and it does a good job of it.

4 out of 5 stars Jacksons the American Dream.......2007-04-10

It is and was a classic movie. The product was in great condition and got to the addressee in a timely manner. I will definitely consider Amazon first when ordering online.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well acted family bio.......2007-02-09

Joe Jackson had dreams as a young man. He wanted to be a boxer and musician and go to California. But he got his girlfriend, Katherine, pregnant and he did the honorable thing--he married her. He tabled his dreams for his family, working in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, to put foood on the table. A religious and principled man (the Jacksons were Jehovah Witnesses), he took family seriously and since he didn't believe in birth control or abortion, he had a lot of kids--9 altogether. On occasion he was brutal--but if any of you are parents, can you imagine how brutal you might get having 10 people depending on you?

Gossip and badmouthing from the kids paint Joe Jackson as a tyrant--and he may have some very large flaws--but one thing is very clear: he never abandoned his family. He transformed his dreams to fit the talent of his children and took all of them out of a probable bleak destiny in Gary to the height of world recognition. I'm amazed by that, frankly.

This movie is definitely worth watching for many reasons. Though poor, this was a close knit family smothered in love and support by both parents. Angela Bassett is touching as usual, all mothery and love, but able to stand up to Joe when he gets a little too tough with the boys. Her children are still devoted to her. Lawrence Tillman as Joe Jackson gives a multi-dimensioned father. Proud of his children, a stern taskmaster, a visionary--as much a visionary as Berry Gordy--a family man who is complex and flawed. I loved the scene at the Apollo where he embraces Michael and gets off to his children performing Twist and Shout. We also see the music business during the Motown Age and the inner workings of Berry Gordy's Motown at the height of its success. Now Billy Dee Williams gives Gordy way too much sex appeal...but I enjoyed the charm anyway.

The boy who played preteen Michael was simply adorable and highly talented as singer and dancer. His singing of Kansas City and Twist and Shout in the first half had me moving. The second half, when the family is breaking up as Michael's star ascends was somewhat painful. The father loses control over his creation, Hollywood values destroy family unity, Katherine suffers from empty nest. But what an achievement.

I loved the fact that this is 4 hours long--it's like a good book you don't want to end. No doubt this story will be retold in fuller detail, but I suspect that story would take 8 hours. I'm looking forward to it.

Call it Boss in a Box. This two-disc set of music videos and concert performances is a must for any Springsteen fan. While the 1989 VHS version contained just 18 songs, the expanded DVD set has 33 performances dating through 2000, including "The Ghost of Tom Joad," performed in 1995 on The Tonight Show, and an acoustic "Born in the U.S.A." from a 1998 appearance on The Charlie Rose Show. Most of the highlights are, not surprisingly, from Springsteen's electrifying concerts, including raw versions of "Rosalita" and "Thunder Road" from early in his career with the E Street Band. Also not to be missed: the 1987 performance of the harrowing "Tougher Than the Rest," shot with poignant close-ups of wife Patti Scialfa singing backup; the raspy, gospel- tinged "Leap of Faith"; and the barely contained smolder of "Fire." Most fans will find themselves wishing that this was strictly a concert DVD; the MTV videos from the Born in the U.S.A. years (the John Sayles-directed trilogy "Born in the U.S.A.," "I'm on Fire," and "Glory Days") seem too canned and glossy sandwiched in with the rougher, more exhilarating live performances. And Springsteen's tendency to get preachy in the late '90s ("Murder Incorporated," "Dead Man Walkin'") can grate as well. But until there's a full-length performance DVD, the Video Anthology will keep fans on their feet. --Anne Hurley

4 out of 5 stars Could've been so much more but a great collection. .......2004-12-16

First: They should've waited until "The Rising".

Second: Bruce has pro-shot footage dating back to 1972-1973. Starting it at 1978 with "Rosalita", running through "Born in the USA" and then "Born to Run" at the end, not to mention a mid-90s "Hungry Heart" promo on the second. The continuity is kind of wacky.

There's a whole show filmed for "No Nukes". There's "Austin City Limits" (which no one can find). There's 1975 footage at the Roxy in LA, and a BBC shot show at the Hammersmith as well as other shows that have been circulating on bootlegs. The Neil Young "Bridge" concert. The Barcelona video's great, but the marathon shows he used to do should really be out there for all of us to see...

Once Bruce started doing videos, he wound up getting top-name directors like Brian DePalma, John Sayles,Jonathan and Ted Demme. A lot of them are memorable and beautifully shot, but a lot of the "Born in the USA" footage just makes you wonder why he hasn't put out one of the shows on DVD. You see a bit of E Street history, including the era where he ditched those guys for a while, then working with them on "Murder Inc.". "Streets of Philadelphia" and "Beautiful Disguise" have Bruce singing live to a backing track, very unusual.

Bruce's fans will love this, but they'll love it more if they put out some of the footage that made people enchanted with his shows.

5 out of 5 stars I was happy with my purchase!.......2004-09-05

Given that it did maybe have a few crappy camera angels & lighting; how could anybody be unhappy with their purchase after seeing him prance around in a pair of tight pants? This DVD collection made me wish I could have seen him in concert...

    5 out of 5 stars Near Perfect!.......2004-03-15

A nice summary of Bruce's early video work. However, why the edit on "Rosalita" - the band introductions (which were originally included when the video came out in the 80's) were a lot of fun. I'd love to find a copy of them.

    Otherwise, a great presentation

3 out of 5 stars Good live performances on disk 1.......2003-12-25

Disk 1 is very good with live performances. Disk 2 was not that great and is videos. I wanted the song Rosalita as that is the best song and is missing from latest DVD's.

4 out of 5 stars Ecompasses the Best of Springsteen.......2003-06-30

This chonological colection of Springsteen's work is great for any Springsteen fan. The 2 DVD set is essentially his greatest hits in video form. A lot of these videos are live performances and show how great Bruce Springsteen is as a live performer. Bruce Springsteen truly is The Boss, and this video collection adds to the legacy. Highlights of the DVD include a rivoting live performance of War, found on the bos set, and a rare version of Fire, a song he wrote for the Pointer Sisters. This also shows some of the later work, including Secret Garden from Jerry Maguire, and Murder Incorporated from his greatest hits album. 4 out of 5 because of Weak representation form the pre-BITUSA era.

Follies in Concert: Four Days in New York provides a backstage look at a genuine Broadway event, the 1985 concert performance of Stephen Sondheim's 1971 Broadway musical Follies. A star-studded roster is backed by the New York Philharmonic, featuring principals Barbara Cook, Mandy Patinkin, Lee Remick, and George Hearn, supported by the likes of Carol Burnett, Liliane Montevecchi, Elaine Stritch, and Liz Callaway. Unfortunately, this 90-minute documentary only includes about 47 minutes of actual concert footage--ironic because the purpose of the concert was to record the whole score after the original Broadway cast recording had omitted or shortened many songs.

Still, what's here is not to be missed. Sondheim's musical brilliantly captures the memories and heartache of a long-lost era and the performers who embodied it. At a reunion of the fictional musical revue The Weismann Follies, the long-retired players relive their careers through pastiches of past songwriters, sometimes accompanied in song or dance by the ghosts of their previous selves. At the same time, four of the people (two married couples) remember their pasts and wonder whether they chose their spouses--and the course of their lives--correctly. This film includes glimpses of the rehearsals and comments from the actors and Sondheim himself that lend depth and insight to the production. And even if only about half of the actual concert is represented, the closing "Loveland" sequence is almost complete, and "Who's That Woman (The Mirror Song)?", though heavily edited, does provide some sense of the choreography. --David Horiuchi

    Description

The incomparable Stephen Sondheim brought his sensational Follies to the stage in 1971 where it was hailed as "monumental theater" by The New York Times. Fourteen years later, the magic was recreated by an unparalleled gathering of stage and screen luminaries performing with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center for a wildly enthusiastic audience. This one-night-only performance became a legendary event in Broadway history--Follies in Concert! The evolution of this unique, historic event is exclusively captured in this film, from the first rehearsal--just four days before the show--to the last-second butterflies just before the curtain rose. This is a rare treasure for all fans of musical theater. Includes the memorable songs "Losing My Mind" and "I'm Still Here" and an all-star cast: Carol Burnett, Liz Callaway, Betty Comden, Barbara Cook, Adolph Green, George Hearn, Howard McGillin, Liliane Montevecchi, Phyllis Newman, Mandy Patinkin, Lee Remick, and Elaine Stritch. 90 minutes.

    4 out of 5 stars Aging Gracefully........2004-11-03

"Beautiful Girls". What a fantastic opportunity for lovers of Broadway musicals to see the behind the scenes creation and making of a successful musical in four days. This film is in part documentary combined with hi-lights of the finished performance at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. The story line of "Beautiful Women" attending a Follies Reunion so many years into retirement is powerful and awakens thoughts of aging. Mandy Patinkin, Carol Burnett, Barbara Cook and Lee Remick lead an all star cast in this Steven Sondheim Classic. You might want to view this film more than once.

    5 out of 5 stars I'LL TAKE ANY SCRAP I CAN GET!.......2003-11-03

True...this is not "the best" documentary film ever made, although it IS pretty darned good, and part of the criticism may come because most of us who would want to see this would be just as happy with just one long uncut take of the concert on film...but we do have that on CD (thank goodness!). And what a concert it was!!! This is as near a dream cast as one could hope for. Of course there will be be endless quibbling over that opinion, and endless comparisons to the OBC...that's the glory of theatre...many opinions. But the overall arc and energy of this concert is amazing and that cannot be disputed...the CD is a classic... and one of those rare few "I wish I were there" events captured on recording. That said, the documentary does offer delight in the backstage glimpses it gives, especiallly after several (hundred? thousand?) listenings to the CD. For instance...I went into this already worshipping and adoring Barbara Cook (for me there can be no other Sally Durant), but after watching, I was really hooked onto Lee Remick too. And there were lots of discovery moments like that because of the documentary...so it did indeed, bring me someplace that the concert CD alone did not, and for that I truly value this DVD. So, perfect? No. (And franky, what is?) But it is worth watching and re-watching, especially if you are a total Follies junky, or learning to become one. How many other backstage stories can you say that of? For me, darned few...this one's a keeper. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars Hats off, here they come those beautiful girls!.......2002-07-15

This is by far my favorite musical, not the concert but the actual musical from the 70's. When i saw Alexis Smith the first time i fell deeply in love. Of course i was only 24 at the time.Even though this is just the concert version minus the terrible cutting and editing it's better than nothing at all. This cast was also wonderful with it's vintage and well polished cast, I gave it the four stars only because it's not as complete as the CD. After all most of the people that would buy the concert version would also have been fans of the original show itself so why not include all the production numbers.Maybe if enough people make compaints do you think they may re-do this DVD?To all those wonderful women who were in the original production,,,Hats off, to those wonderful girls.. The likes of this will never come again.

    4 out of 5 stars Follies Documentary.......2002-05-14

It has been noted several times that this DVD is not a recording of the famous concert at Lincoln Center, but a documentary of that concert including rehearsals and some of the concert. The concert was used as the platform to make the first full recording of this incredible score. Many may not realise that in order to preserve the show on 1 LP, the original Broadway cast recording had substantial cuts made while it was being recorded. The OBC cd's released later include only one cut song from that original cast recording. The OBC recording of Follies is a crime to be sure.

But back to the DVD. This is an interesting behind the scenes look at the mad house it took to present a full stage concert of Follies in about a week. It is interesting to watch Thomas Z. Shepherd at work here as the record producer. (An interesting comparison would be to buy the documentary of the recording of Company to see a younger Sheperd at work) There are scenes in the rehearsal halls, the terror of opening night and wonderful scenes on stage.

If you are a theater lover, this DVD is a wonderful documentary of how a show like this is put together. And there are wonderful clips of Carol Burnett singing "I'm Still Here" and Elaine Stritch singing "Broadway Baby". And who can ever resist Barbara Cook?

The packaging may be confusing for die hard theater fans. The DVD cover uses the famous David Byrd logo from the original Broadway cast and not the photograph cover from the recording. But dont let that fool you, this documentary is worthy of any serious theater lovers collection.
