A mock TV cooking show called Let's Get Cooking! sets the stage for this 30-minute study of eggs. The show is cohosted by four enthusiastic preteens (Ã la the popular PBS program Zoom), who educate, entertain, and speak right to the camera. And like Zoom, the action moves at a brisk pace. Minute-long sequences filmed on the show's kitchen set are interspersed with educational video footage, whimsical stop-action camera work (where Ukranian eggs pull stunts reminiscent of Monty Python fame), and an ongoing bit involving two puppets who are "watching" the TV show. Educational pieces include a trip to two poultry farms (one private, one commercial) and a short study of eggs used in various religious or cultural traditions. Also, amid a slew of predictable jokes, kitchen antics, and bantering, the four cohosts offer a kid-friendly recipe for muffin tin eggs, facts about nutrition and kitchen safety, and a science experiment or two. This "something for everyone" approach--where jokes often upstage the yolks--seems best suited for ages 5 to 9. --Liane Thomas
