Created by Steven Bochco and one of television's most influential series, Hill Street Blues was not your father's cop show. The Emmy-winning pilot episode, "Hill Street Station," immediately established the series as less a police procedural than an up-close and personal "interface with the police experience." To establish gritty, documentary-like realism, the show featured sequences, such as the pre-credit roll call, that were filmed with a hand-held camera. There was chaotic, overlapping dialogue. There were sudden, shocking bursts of violence that claimed popular characters. Story lines were not wrapped up at the end of the hour, but instead, unfolded serially throughout the season. It's no wonder that Hill Street, while championed by most critics, was initially not embraced by viewers. It was, in the beginning, one of television's lowest rated shows, its case not helped by NBC's criminal practice of juggling it in its primetime schedule). But there is justice in Hollywood. Hill Street Blues won the Emmy for best drama in its first season. Also honored were several members of the ensemble, including Daniel J. Travanti as the compassionate and incorruptible Precinct Capt. Frank Furillo, Michael Conrad as the avuncular Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (whose cautionary, "Let's be careful out there," became the show's pop culture signature), and Barbara Babcock as the wildly sexual Grace Gardner, who rocks Esterhaus's world (particularly in the episode that earned her her statuette, "Fecund Hand Rose").
There were no big stars on Hill Street Blues (or, for that matter, no little stars, as one of the cast members jokes during a near-hour-long reunion featurette included as a bonus feature on this three double-sided disc set). Each was an indelible character, among them Charles Haid as cowboy cop Andy Renko, Veronica Hammel as sexy public defender Joyce Davenport, Bruce Weitz as the untamed, animalistic Belker, Keil Martin as LaRue, whose descent into alcoholism is one of the season's most compelling dramatic arcs, and James Sikking as the gung-ho Howard Hunter. Once daring, Hill Street Blues seems almost quaint today, with none of the graphic sex or language that scandalized NYPD Blue (in one episode, a captured cat burglar, portrayed by a pre-L.A. Law Michael Tucker, makes a reference to "wolf pee-pee"). The ethnic portrayals, too, are not exactly nuanced. But the human dramas at the heart of Hill Street still make for arresting television. --Donald Liebenson
Description
"LET'S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE." So ends each roll call session at the Hill Street station house. As the cops and detectives head out to the streets, Captain Frank Furillo begins the delicate balancing act of providing enough protection for the law-abiding citizens without inciting the neighborhood gangs and local criminal elements who are openly hostile towards any police presence. Yet as dangerous as his inner city precinct can be, Furillo's biggest battles often involve protecting his own cops from the Public Defender's office, self-serving bureaucrats, and even each other.
Customer Reviews:
My Number One TV Series.......2007-05-07
May I say that I wish that those who list the actors at Amazon, stop listing cast names alphabetically, but list them in starring roles. For example the name Daniel J Traventi should appear FIRST in any listing related to the great Hill Street Blues. Frank Furillo was the captain of the the Hill Street Station, and any company wanting to train staff in leadership skills etc should include episodes of Hill Strrett Blues as compulsory viewing. Furillo was a wonderful leader and human being.
Next was Michael Conrad who played Sgt Phil Esterhaus who left the series in Series three (I think) when the actor was too ill (cancer) to work any longer. His parting warning to his team "Now let's be careful out there," was always the last thing he said to those heading out on patrol at the beginning of every episode.
Was there anyone in Television more stunning than Veronica Hamel ? Does anyone remember she was living with another Hill Street actor Taurean Blaque (Det Neil Washington) at that time ?
Another item of note about Hill Street - how much class the African American officers displayed, and what wonderful roles were written for them. Officer Bobby Hill (Michael Warren) who had to deal with his partner, the complaining Renko (Charles Haid) and teach him to grow up, whilst Det Washington (Taurean Blaque) had the lyin' La Rue alias John JD LaRue (Kiel Martin) to constantly cover for, as his partner womanized and drank to excess, and went awol from jobs.
Other characters/actors of note in this series were James B Sikking as Lt Howard Hunter, the military misfit, and Joe Spano as the gentle Henry Goldblume the real right hand man to Furillo.
I love this series as much today as I did back then and agree with those many on here who say the quality of the transfer to DVD and general packaging could have been a lot better.
However, after waiting so long for the series to appear on DVD we will just have to put up with what we're given.
Question : How long before Series Three ? It's been a couple of years already.
A Great Show That Has Held Up.......2007-04-02
I was not born in 1981 when this show originally aired. My parents talked about it and I heard it referred to in relation to other shows I like so I decided to see what the hype was about. For once the hype was right, this is a really good show. It can even pull in a first time watcher when it is about 26 years out of date. The reason this show holds up so well is that the characters are so interesting. I am currently watching season 2 and hope the rest of the series will be released on DVD so I can get caught up. I'd think it make for a good family tv night (with teenage or up children) during the summer hiatus. A great show for people who love tv and great characters. Good even if its the first time around.
Hill Street Blues Season 1.......2007-03-08
I received Season 2 for Christmas and just had to secure Season 1. I am very pleased with the production. It includes some of the true classics and you see the character development take place in a well organized manner. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys police drama. My only regret is that the follow-on seaons are not available. Great series.
A Blast from the Past.......2007-02-01
I remember watching this show when I was a kid -- I didn't remember that the characters argued so much and shout at one another at every opportunity; fortunately this seems to happen only in the pilot. The show takes on a nice pace by the time you get to the third or fourth episode. Good show if you like the superior NYPD Blue series (same producer).
as good as I remembered.......2007-01-25
Normally, nostaligia interferes, clouding memory, so returning to an old favorite leaves me with little more than a bad taste in my mouth. 'How could I have liked this?' I often ask myself.
Fortunately, this show is a powerful counter example. It's well-acted by a superb cast. The emphasis is on character actors exploring roles with real dimension to them. The plots are driven primarily by the reasonable frustration of policing the roughest part of a city.
As a side note, this show reminds me of life in the 1980's - not the "Miami Vice" version, but the downtrodden Reagan years of high inflation and low wages. It's not a pretty picture, but it's an honest picture. The change in affluence over the past 20 years is really stunning - I'm not talking about the poor, but rather the very middle-class police officers, struggling to make ends meet.
Later police dramas (NYPD Blue in particular, given the connection between the show) followed the same formula, with slightly different twists, more raw language, and partial nudity. Still, Hill Street Blues stands out as an excellent example of what a police drama can be.
However, I fear that this review has so far missed the mark. It's a TV show, and the primary question is, "Is it entertaining?". For me, that's a definite "YES". I can watch one or two episodes in a sitting, absorbing both the atmosphere and the action, and enjoy myself, looking forward to more. I tend not to buy TV shows, as I can't see watching them, and there are always others to rent, but I'm glad I own this one, and look forward to getting the rest of the seasons.
(As an aside, people often ask where this takes place - it's never spelled out, although there are hints that it's Chicago. However, it could take place reasonably in any large midwestern city.)

In its second season, Melrose Place turned up the heat, resulting in a funnier, sexier series. Alison (Courtney Thorne-Smith) continues to see Billy (Andrew Shue), Jake (Grant Show) moves in with Jo (Daphne Zuniga), and Jane (Josie Bissett) divorces Michael (Thomas Calabro), who shacks up with Kimberly (Marcia Cross). That leaves Matt (the underused Doug Savant), who has an affair with a sailor; Amanda (Heather Locklear), who sets her sights on Jake; and Sydney (Laura Leighton), who sets hers on Michael. A lot changes during the year: Sydney turns to prostitution, Jo kills in self-defense, Amanda and Jo catch a voyeur in the act, and Michael and Kimberly end up in the hospital when he crashes their car. Though Michael recovers after a few episodes, Kimberly slips into a coma and then disappears. Michael is told she's died; fortunately for fans, he was misinformed. Kimberly eventually returns, but though she looks the same, she isn't. Turns out, she's now a certifiable loony--and she intends to make Michael pay. As she memorably tells Sydney in the season finale, "You're looking at human garbage... when Michael's dead, God's gonna do a jig."
By the end of the second year, one marriage will have taken place, while another will be called off at the last minute. After an entertaining, if overly earnest first season, Melrose Place had found its footing. The acting isn't always first-rate--the crying scenes are particularly unconvincing--but 31 episodes in one year must have been draining on the cast (most dramas top out at 23). Guest stars include Parker Stevenson as a high-tech millionaire, Gina Gershon as a waitress/call girl, Linda Gray as Amanda's estranged mother, and future X-Men star Famke Janssen as a high-class hooker. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Product Description
A nighttime soap opera about the lives, careers, trials and tribulations of a group of young people living in an apartment building in the trendy neighborhood of Melrose Place. The show was a spin off of Beverly Hills 90210 and starred Heather Locklear as the scheming Amanda Woodward, head of her own advertising agency and owner of the apartment building.

Drama drama drama.......2007-05-31
Even juicier than the first season- great to watch if you love drama! Included in this season is Alison's stalker, Michael and Jane's divorce and Sydney sleeping with Michael...
Melrose Place Season 2 Review.......2007-05-31
The DVD set was delivered very promptly as promised and the quality was excellent.
The content of the show is great...(that goes without saying to any Melrose Place fan!!!!).
Very good video.......2007-05-30
This is the second season of Melrose, the 90's icon show...it is full of surprises and fast and furious action, and introduces show favorites such as Sidney, Kimberly, and Amanda...all of the famous fights and drama are here, and for those of us who grew up watching it...it feels good to be home again....
A risk free purchase.......2007-05-20
It was a pleasure to see this series after all these years. I remember when we used to eagerly await Tuesday nights at 9:30pm for our dose of the Melrose gang.
Season 2 is one of the best of the entire series with classic storylines throughout. It's also where Heather Locklear's character really took over and she is simply brilliant throughout. It's not just her though that has made this the classic it is. You have Laura Leighton who shines as Sydney, Marcia Cross as Kimberley, and then there is the annoying but likeable Alison (played by Courtney Smith).
Look out for those famous scenes ie.
-where Kimberley removes her wig to reveal a nasty scar from the accident.
-Sydney hits rock bottom and becomes a prostitute
-Amanda throwing her weight around at work
-Billy and Alison's constant fights
The show actually holds up very well after all these years. Sure, it's far fetched at times and trashy, but there are also some true heartfelt moments which gave the show a human touch.
This is a risk free purchase. A must own!
Even Better Than The First Season.......2007-05-13
This season is truly outstanding. There are lots of twists and turns in this show - you'll never be bord.
I should also mention that I have watched all 8 discs, and they all played without any problems. I will say, however, that discs 7 and 8 are grainy, especially disc 7. It is really sad that these discs were not re-done. In this day and age there is just no excuse to not fix a disc to superb quality. After all, we are paying for these discs and we expect quality.

Nostalgic Pleasure.......2007-05-13
I am 78 years old, but rememeber well the Saturday Matinee at my local movie theatre. Two feature films, a newsreel, a cartoon and, of course, a Chapter from whatever serial was playing at the time.
Superman - The 1948 & 1950 Theatrical Serial Collection was two of those serials and like most of them, was so bad it was good. Kids today will never know the exciting anticipation of having to wait a whole week before we could know how the hero was going to solve this week's cliffhanger. My only concern with these two serials was that Jimmy Olsen was going to have brain damage from being punched out so many times.
They're So Bad They're Good.......2007-05-12
I've always been interested in the movie serials of the 40's & 50's. They are usually so bad that they are good. They're shot on a low budget, the acting won't win any Oscars, the special effects are laughable!
That being said, I had a good time with the Superman serials. Kirk Alyn is OK as Clark Kent/Superman. The strange part about Clark Kent is that sometimes it appears he loses his powers when he's Clark. He can be beaten and knocked out. Other times he has his powers. Noel Neil is Lois Lane, the reporter who always finds herself in a predicament and must be rescued by Superman. I doubt a real reporter would purposely put him/herself in such situations. Poor Tommy Bond. As Jimmy Olsen, his only purpose is to get beaten up easily several times.
The special effects, well they don't exist! When Superman flies he becomes a cartoon.
But I still got a kick out of it. Two serials are included; "Superman" and battles the Spider Lady, and "Atom Man vs. Superman". Atom Man is the best of the two. This one introduces Luthor. I believe The actor playing Luthor is the same actor who portrayed Batman in the Batman & Robin serials.
Just kick back and laugh. As I said, they're so bad that they're good!
Superman - The 1948 & 1950 Theatrical Serials Collection.......2007-05-06
A fun must have for your collection
Saturday Morning Serial.......2007-04-17
Look Up in the Sky, Its a Bird..Its a Plane...NO, Its SUPERMAN
Before the TV show, Superman was brought to life in the Saturday Morning Serial. Here on 4 DVDS in the 1948 & 1950 serial (Superman & Atom men vs Superman).
The serials were 12-15 15 episodes which ran weekly with a movie. These short mini movies always left a character or Charater in a cliffhanger situation of life or death, which always they escaped in the next episode.
These two serials are a throwback to an easier time. with over the top villians like the Spider-Lady.
I remember was a was a kid at the Melba theater in Bronx, New York. They ran kiddy days, with a Disney or Disney like movie (Zebra in the Kitchen, A Tiger Walks, Circus World), with cartoons and serial episodes. AS I watch these episodes I was seven again and had the same thriill I had then
So if you want to see the originial SUPERMAN, this collection is the one to get

The unprecedented resurrection of Family Guy disproves Neil Young's maxim that "Once you're gone, you can never come back." Unceremoniously canceled in 2002, the irreverent animated series proved to be a phenomenal seller on DVD, prompting not only a rerun revival on basic cable, but also a new season. For those who have only recently made the acquaintance of the dysfunctional Griffins, this five-episode sampler is representative of the series' "nothing is sacred" comic universe. Creator Seth MacFarlane chose well: "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein," which was banned during the series' original run; "Lethal Weapons"; "To Live and Die in Dixie"; "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar"; and "Road to Rhode Island." In addition to the restoration of a previously censored gag involving Osama Bin Laden in "Rhode Island," what does this collection bring to the party for the Family Guy fan who has everything? Four new episode commentaries, the best of which features MacFarlane in character as chain-smoking, martini swilling, talking dog Brian, and megalomaniacal infant Stewie for "Rhode Island." There is also an interview with MacFarlane about why he chose these episodes, and a fitfully amusing sneak peak at MacFarlane's new series, American Dad. But as this collection reminds us, Family Guy is a tough act to follow. --Donald Liebenson
Description
Get ready for five deliciously absurd chapters in the lives of America's most twisted animated family! These are the hand-picked, hands-down favorite episodes of Seth MacFarlen, the delightfully demented genius behind "Family Guy". He'll also treat you to an inside look at the long-awaited return of the series, as well as his newest TV brainchild, "American Dad." What a guy. What a family.
What a "Family Guy" treat!
Customer Reviews:
1 reason only: commentary for Road to Rhode Island.......2007-03-27
AFAIK, this release is the only one with the "commentary track" done by Brian and Stewie. It is a laugh riot, totally not Kid Friendly.
Is it REALLY worth it?.......2007-01-13
If you already own Volumes One and Two of Family Guy, you may be hard-pressed to justify shelling out some hard earned cash on the purchase of this DVD.
If you are into Commentaries this delivers some As-Yet-Unheard audio goodness, as well as various other unseen extras. With the few episodes that are included in this "Best Of" release, I have found it to be perfect for use as a small dose of Family Guy while traveling, or when you haven't got the time to commit yourself to diving back into a full Season Set.
YAY!.......2007-01-10
Hi, I'm 12 and I love family guy. I'm not one for vularity and crudity, but i watch family guy to see the other jokes. This DVD contains of 5 episodes... "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", "Road to Rhode Island", "To Love and Die in Dixie" (my fav), "I am Peter, Hear me Roar", and "Lethal Weapons".
Its worth it, but be sure if you are a true Family Guy Fan, Get this!...and all the other Volumes!
Family Guy.......2007-01-04
Our son loves this show but with work he can't always watch it -- so the DVD was a big hit.
Family guy-The Freakin' Sweet Collection.......2006-05-08
Good thank god theres a comentary for lethal weapons episode because thats a good one.I think Seth Macfarlane should have picked a different episode instead of When You Wish Upon A Weinstein.because it already has a comentary on the season three set.I think he should have picked I Never Met The Dead Man,but to bad.

It began as a spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210, but this summer replacement quickly established its own unique identity. The connection is creator Darren Star and the character of Jake (Grant Show), who had a fling with Kelly (Jennie Garth) on 90210. In the pilot, she

stops by 4616 Melrose to pay a visit (and returns for two more episodes). Jake's neighbors comprise of Alison (Courtney Thorne-Smith), Rhonda (Vanessa Williams), Sandy (Amy Locane), Matt (Doug Savant), and married couple Michael (Thomas Calabro) and Jane (Josie Bissett). When Alison's roommate runs out on her, she takes in Billy (Andrew Shue) to cover the rent. Just as 90210 had the Peach Pit, the twentysomethings of Melrose gather at Shooters, where aspiring actress Sandy waits tables. Her roommate Rhonda teaches aerobics. Other professions include mechanic (Jake), receptionist (Alison), social worker (Matt), doctor (Michael), designer (Jane), and writer (Billy). Midway through the season, photographer Jo (Daphne Zuniga) and ad exec Amanda ("special guest" Heather Locklear) arrive to shake things up. What had been a program about work and life issues takes a darker turn as Michael gives in to temptation and Amanda sets out to ruin Alison's career--and her relationship with Billy.
Other troublemakers are waiting in the wings, like Michael's colleague Kimberly (Marcia Cross) and Jane's sister Sydney (Laura Leighton). Both return to stay in the second year. Melrose Place ran for seven increasingly soapy seasons and spawned the short-lived Models, Inc.. Afterwards, Thorne-Smith moved on to Ally McBeal and According to Jim, while Savant and Cross would eventually segue to Desperate Housewives. Other actors had a shorter stay at the infamous West Hollywood apartment complex-- notably, Locane, who makes her exit in the 13th episode ("Dreams Come True") and Williams, who makes hers in the 32nd (two-part season finale "Suspicious Minds"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description
A nighttime soap opera about the lives, careers, trials and tribulations of a group of young people living in an apartment building in the trendy neighborhood of Melrose Place. The show was a spin off of Beverly Hills 90210 and starred Heather Locklear as the scheming Amanda Woodward, head of her own advertising agency and owner of the apartment building.

Still fantastic.......2007-05-13
I bought this because I know how much I liked it on TV, but thinking that I may be disappointed and not like it anymore. I was wrong. I am loving it again.
If you loved it then, you will love it again. Besides, so much happened that I forgot about, it's like watching it for the first time.
If you didn't see it then, you must watch it now!!!
Bought as a Gift.......2007-03-29
I gought this as a gift and it is a great addition to the collection.
First Season Fan.......2007-03-02
I bought this DVD because I ~ apparently unlike many other buyers ~ thought the first season was the best; especially the first half of the first season. Back when it addressed what it was like to move across the country, or just out on your own, after college and the professional, social, and financial issues we faced in doing so. After Season One, Melrose Place went from being touching and meaningful to being yet another nighttime soap (albeit a fun one).
If you want the suds and catfights, stick to later seasons. If you want the wonderful friendships along with some drama ~ and a reminder of those wonderful and terrifying times ~ definitely buy this DVD set.
That's how it started!.......2007-02-13
Season 1 might not have been the best season ever but it is quite nice to watch. This is a season of fun and morality as well as a good introduction for the series. It is far from the drama of the following seasons but it's totally worth the money. If you are a big fan of Melrose Place, you know what I'm talking about and you probably own it already.
DVD set is awesome, picture quality outstanding for a TV show from the 90's, sound is very good and I don't think they've actually changed a lot of the original soundtrack but cannot tell for sure.
Tame and often sweet compared to later seasons........2007-02-09
Viewing the first season of Melrose Place, one would be hard-pressed to peg this as the over-the-top sudsy sleazefest it would become. Conceived as a spin-off to the popular "Beverly Hills 90210," "Melrose Place" was aimed at the burgeoning Gen X demographic that was the darling of producers in the years post-Reagan/Bush.
The cast is young and pretty, and servicably talented. The characters they created are a little green around the edges in this first season, but there's substance in the proceedings, as a group of strangers forges a faux family out of socio-economic instability, flirty chemistry, and a genuine affection for their shared abode - an eden of greenery, wrought iron balconies and the ubiquitous pool in the courtyard. Frankly, such a place would have been way out of the price-range for a pack of 20-somethings that includes a struggling actress, a social-worker, a construction-worker, and various office drones. I suppose that's part of the charm of the show.
So enjoy this year of Melrose bliss before the addition of Heather Locklear, crazy stalker girlfirends, backstabbing manstealing sisters, et. al. While future seasons were more catty and fun, it's this first season that hooked me for being geniune, sometimes smart, and often sweet.

The best disaster film I've seen yet ............2007-06-28
For once, the subplots weren't overwhelming or detracting from the major theme of a film, this one focused mainly upon the prediction of the imminent "big one." The most diverting subplot dealt with a very persistent sniper determined to bag his quarry and was quite enjoyable. ;-P
And the "big one" did indeed happen, preceded by smaller quakes and followed by aftershocks. The realism was absolutely terrific, the acting superb, and the overall mood solemn and thought-provoking.
Highly recommended for disaster film fans! :-)
Bought this for a dollar at Wal-Mart and was very happy.......2007-04-02
OK, no Oscar winner(or Emmy winner , as this was a T.V. mini-series) here but a very nice pre-CGI effects try at once again sending Los Angeles rolling around and destroying the dream factory. THe effects are not bad and the actors are very good and the 3 hours roll(sorry had to do it) by very well.
Well-done disaster flick.......2007-03-08
Joanna Kerns, the lovable mom from Growing Pains, leads us through the "Big One" that hits Southern California. I admit that my penchant for disaster movies biases me, but The Great Los Angeles Earthquake provides a better-than-B-movie presentation of the destruction of L.A. The 'science' appeared convincing enough to bring me into the story. A cross between an educational after-school special and a prime-time disaster flick intended to grab market share, this movie adequately captures the drama surrounding the event, before, during, and after. The underlying storylines moves us through easily and credibly. The special effects certainly date this movie to some degree, but considering its own era, and the fact that the film was made for TV, the effects come off as convincing enough to repel laughter and instead draw in the audience into a horrible realism. I waited years for the movie to be placed on DVD. It's well worth the wait.
The way a natural disaster flick is SUPPOSED to be!.......2007-01-22
This movie was so good, I don't think I could watch it again. This is not to knock the movie in any way, it's just my stomach isn't made for these movies. That said, the whole movie is very realistic, and the ending is not a feel good ending like Aftershock. So if you like these movies, strap yourself in.
The Great Los Angeles Earthquake.......2007-01-03
Very prompt order receiving (unlike the ones I have waiting since 22nd December to receive directly from Amazon.com for textbooks). The movie was used by several students for reports due in a Natural Disasters class in college. We had to pick out what was "right" about the science and what was "wrong" about the science. This particular movie was mine to do so was very interested in it. It portrayed an earthquake on a real fault pretty good but what happens in earthquakes and the time it takes to get to people (or across town in a disaster) is unreal.

A necessity.......2007-07-08
The only way to have the original, broadcast pilot is to find it as an import. This import fits the bill. There's no special features, and the English subtitles lack proper punctuation. That being said, this is the pilot episode to one of the best shows ever to grace the small screen.
Pilot episode deserves 5 stars, 2 star audio mix is horrible .......2007-04-22
Until the pilot gets an offical release in the United States, this is the best you can do (unless you purchase the overseas edition). Created as a region 0 disc (it'll play anywhere)this was manufactured in China and while the picture quality is pretty good, the 5.1 audio mix sounds like an amateur created it--it's metallic sounding and sounds like you're listening to the show in a tunnel. If you must have the pilot now (vs. waiting for Paramount to finally release it now that ALL the rights issues have been resolved. Although it isn't on the release list yet, supposedly it will hit the market at the end of this year. We'll see), I would suggest finding some place to rent vs. buy or get it inexpensely.
FYI, this is a bare bones release with some really bad looking trailers (they look like they were pulled from VHS)and two very brief biographies/credits for Joan Chen and Kyle MacLachlan. I'd suggest renting (and burning a copy)if you can find it vs. buying this disc vs. being out of pocket for $45.00. The best thing to do is to either pay for a foreign edition or wait for the offical U.S. release.
its not the "only way" to get the pilot episode.......2007-02-07
there is a canadian import, which does not have the issues described above. i have it and its spectacular.......
Not that bad........2007-01-26
After reading all the negative reviews I was a little skeptical of this disc. Actually, it's not that bad. It played fine. Dolby sound was good with no hum. The colors are a little washed out compared to the season one set. Not that bad.
COME ON PARAMOUNT!!!!!!.......2007-01-13
The Pilot Episode ot Twin Peaks is one of the most brilliant pieces of film I've ever seen.
This version is a barely legal knock off import that someone probably made from a VHS. The quality of the video is pretty bad, the audio is atrocious and there aren't any menus or special features period.
The only positive thing about it is that it ends where the original pilot ends and rolls the TV Show end credits there.
If you buy the VHS version, they tack on some footage from later episodes in attempt to create a complete story arc that just makes Lynch seem even crazier than he actually is. That particular bit of incoherence isn't really his fault.
All these years of the VHS only have made me accustomed to that extended version and to see it end where it's supposed to makes me happy. So it's not all bad news. The other thing is that there's really no choice in the matter at this point.

Whatever you do, don't confuse this Jack Frost with the 1997 comedic horror flick of the same name (its tagline: "He's chillin... and killin'"). This family film stars Michael Keaton as Jack Frost, an aspiring musician, loving husband, and occasionally absent father. Frost's life is unexpectedly cut short by a car accident, and a year after his death he comes back as--you guessed it--a snowman, to help his family heal (Kelly Preston and Joseph Cross as wife and son Gabby and Charlie, respectively). The sudden death may affect sensitive younger viewers, but by the time Frost returns the movie is more light-hearted, and the film's message is a worthy one. There's an underlying theme that supports independence, and Gabby isn't saddled with a new dude by the film's end. There's also a good rapport developed between father and son, and especially mother and son. If an audience can take that huge leap of faith to accept the premise (as youthful audiences will no doubt be able to do), this is entertaining family fare. --N.F. Mendoza

Is a wonderful story of family and defines love very well.
Jack Frost meets Frosty the Snowman.......2006-11-27
Though I have pretty much always been a Michael Keaton fan, I just can't get in to this movie with more than an ocassional viewing. If I remember correctly I enjoyed it when it was first introduced but subsequent runnings of Jack Frost on the ole dvd player has left me cold. There are those movies that I never seem to tire of but unforunately this isn't one of them.
I can't recommend this movie as a purchase but if you want to watch something very different then rent it first or find a really cheap price for it.
I miss good Michael Keaton films.
horrible.......2006-06-11
This movie is lame. So stupid, I feel like asking someone to stand on top of the empire state building and throw bricks at my head one by one while I'm on the ground. That would Be Awesome!
Cute movie.......2006-02-23
My kids love this movie & asked for it, so we bought it.

A must see B movie!.......2007-01-19
Every once in awhile a really good 'bad' movie comes along. To name a few: 'Attack of the Killer Tomatos', 'Killer Clowns From Outer Space', 'Santa Claus Vs. The Martians', etc. If you have an occasional craving for a fun and entertaining bad movie then 'Jack Frost' is for you!
A Second Chance to be the Coolest Dad...Whoops, Wrong Film!.......2007-01-08
Although often touted as a horror comedy, the most amusing aspect of this 1997 direct-to-video clunker is the fact that it is often confused with its saccharine family-flick namesake, a commensurately clunky and similarly themed Michael Keaton vehicle released in theaters the following year. Interestingly, the titular character of each film is a snowman that has somehow come to life. However, those planning a nice evening with the youngsters will be in for quite a shock if they purchase or rent the wrong movie. The snowy dude in Keaton's film is a benevolent father figure who wants to help out his real-life family; the icy hombre in the 1997 horror flick is animated by the soul of an escaped convict with a penchant for rape and murder.
Outside of the amusing thought of 1997's JACK FROST getting an accidental showing at a kiddie party, this film has very little to offer. The special FX are amateurish, the script is so inane that it is nearly impossible to suspend one's disbelief for the duration, and much of the acting is horrid. While some films can be admired for their cheesiness--Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD (1981) comes immediately to mind--JACK FROST falls way beneath even THAT standard. Writer-director Michael Cooney seems unable to decide if he wants to spoof the horror genre--there are scenes that mimic horror cliches but few, if any, that parody or satirize them--or simply make, a la Wes Craven's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984), a scary film with humorous characters and an amusing premise. The film vacillates between both styles without gaining sufficient footing in either, and the result is a slushy thematic jumble that is neither scary nor entertaining.
JACK FROST is not without a few near-redeeming qualities, however. There are lots of amusing Python-esque puns and jokes sprinkled throughout the film, the kind of verbal gags that make you simultaneously chuckle and...well, GAG. And this film also marks the cinematic debut of gorgeous actress Shannon Elizabeth, who here has some, ah, revealing moments with the eponymous snowman. Unfortunately, these elements do not elevate the film enough to make it worth wasting an hour-and-a-half of one's life.
Don't be fooled by the artwork on the DVD's packaging--that cool skull made of snow does not appear in the film. In truth, 1997's JACK FROST is an ice-cold stinker that few discerning horror fans will want to add to their collections.
Crazy, but Addicting.......2007-01-06
Let's face it - this is a low budget film that's everything you would expect from a low-budget film. But, for some reason, the movie is strangely addicting to me. I never imagined liking a movie about a killer snowman, but I do. It's saving grace is the total absurdity. The "gore", the snowman, everything is so over-the-top fake it's actually quite funny to watch.
Though it must be said that Jack Frost 2 is better than this one, in my opinion.
ABSOLUTLY TERRIBLE, A MUST HAVE!.......2006-03-17
The movie is about a crazy physco killer that dies then comes back as a snow man and wreaks havoc on a little town. I have to be honest with you this movie SUCKS! It's horrible that it's just hilarious. His one liners like "Well it aint F**ckin Frosty" and "The worlds most pissed off snow cone" are classic. It's like the horror/slasher/comedy version of Godzilla. It's a terrible movie but you can't help but love it.
