When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-07-08

This was one of my favorite movies when I was young, so I bought it for my children to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-21

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

My DVD arrived on-time, and it is in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.

The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

I like this movie. The atmospherics are awesome, the director is awesome, Jonny Depp is in it...

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Tale Reimagined..........2007-05-26

1999's "Sleepy Hollow" is Director Tim Burton's excellent reimagining of the classic Washington Irving fairy tale. Johnny Depp steals the movie as Ichabod Crane, in this version a New York City police constable with new-fangled and unwelcome investigative techniques who is exiled to Sleepy Hollow by an unhappy magistrate (Christopher Lee in a spot-on cameo). Crane arrives in Sleepy Hollow (authentically portrayed as a post-American Revolution farming community) to find a string of unsolved murders attributed to the headless but ambulatory corpse of a Hessian soldier.

Crane finds also a town full of intrigues and mysterious goings-on, which he will patiently unravel with the help of Katrina Van Tassel (nicely played by Christina Ricci) who turns out to have secrets of her own. A solid supporting cast helps carry the movie.

Burton lays on an escalating series of horrible murders, each with supernatural overtones, that challenge both the investigative techniques and the rational beliefs of Ichabod Crane. Each such scene is nicely creepy without overindulging the gore. As it turns out, a genuine horror has been unleashed in Sleepy Hollow. The betrayal of the long-deal Hessian is at the heart of his current incarnation as a killer. Ichabod will have to dealt with his own bitter experience with witchcraft in order to identify the guilty and save the innocent.

This movie is highly recommended to those looking for an entertaining and well-executed update of a classic fairly tale, featuring fine direction and excellent if sometimes campy acting.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-05-19

For me everything works and looks brilliant on this film. Great script, wonderful performance by Depp and a surprising choice with Ricci and, even more surprising, she truely delivers. Most important, Burton nails this whimsical gothic tale and, in my humble opinion, created a film classic. Highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepy Hollow.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my granddaughter for Christmas in 2006. We all watched it that day, and it was pretty good. The shipping was very quick.

5 out of 5 stars Tim burtons true masterpiece movie.......2007-03-13

Do you love the old cartoon classic tale of icabod crane and the headless horseman? Then sleepy hollow is your kind of movie. A movie with violence gore and more brutal beheadings from the headless horseman. One of the best movies for a good drinking rollercoster ride.

In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. The DVD includes an above-average commentary by the director and Neumeier, several deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and promotional featurette, cast bios, production notes, and more. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy Goodness It's A Bunch Of Calcium In This One .......2007-07-02

I have never seen the entire movie. I always catch this movie in the middle of it. But from what I have seen this is one of the worst movies ever. But that is what makes it great. Lame monsters and terrible over dramatic acting team up to make a B movie classic. Now if you think this is an actual "good" movie you have some issues. If you appreciate cheese flowing through your tv screen into your living and down the hall out of the window and down the street then this is for you.

2 out of 5 stars The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story.......2007-06-22

Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.

Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.

Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also is a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.

If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.

Recommendation: Read the novel, Starship Troopers, skip the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Does Not Do The Book Justice.......2007-06-08

I was excited to learn that a movie was being made of "Starship Troopers", a favorite novel of my teen-years, and even more excited that Paul Verhoeven would be directing it since he had previously taken a much more mediocre story (Robocop) and made an excellent action film out of it. Unfortunately, the movie "Starship Troopers" does not live up to the promise of the original - highly controversial - novel.

Of course, it is hardly unusual to feel let down by film adaptations of favorite books. The screen-writer's need to compress into a couple hours a story that may have involved the satisfied reader for several days guarantees that something will be left out that one really wishes had been left in. Nevertheless, I felt that the screen writing took far too many liberties with Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and the film suffered as a result.

As one example, the original novel was full of observations about the responsibility of people to 'serve' society before becoming "citizens" with the right to vote and participate in the political process - and this aspect became controversial because of Heinlein's emphasis on military service. The movie touches upon this, but quickly simplifies it into a stilted fascist state divided between the non-participating "civilians" and the military veteran "citizens". While even that could have made for some interesting plot development, the film proceeds to ignore it completely to focus instead on soldiers in an interstellar war who frequently seem to treat combat more like a football match - even after they have suffered shocking casualties. (A more careful reading of the book, by the way, will find that many forms of service to society other than military were included among the things responsible people could do on their path to citizenship. I am afraid it would take too long to include that here, though, and suggest that anyone interested simply read the book.)

Finally, there is the matter of the characters. Heinlein had strong views on the utter pointlessness of racism. He chose to create a future in which racism was so completely extinct that no one at any point in the book ever comments, or even thinks descriptively about other characters in terms of race. But he does leave enough clues in the text so that you know that the central character - Rico - is Filipino, not the white guy (Casper Van Dien) presented in the film. Once again, I find it unfortunate that most of the book's more progressive ideas were erased by the film-makers and more so that having done this, they then fail to develop any storyline around the evidently fascist state they have created.

This does not mean the film was a total waste. As a low-brow action picture it is entertaining. But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and their situation, and I continue to hope that it will be re-made some day into a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's original novel.

4 out of 5 stars A little campy............2007-05-25

This is hard one to nail down. It is fun, campy, it makes you wonder what you would do if this was really real. A little on the gory side, but you can understand where the characters are coming from; I have felt like several of them. Lots of action, fun and friends that don't usually enjoy this kind of movie has watched and enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Is it just me..........2007-04-28

...or is this the darkest black comedy ever made? I just find Casino so amusing and funny that I hardly even notice the grim violence and harrowing drama. I also think that Casino is far, far superior to the over-rated Goodfellas. Even though it's longer, it passes in a breeze. Casino is just so colorful, multi-layered and intricate despite it's apparent simplicity. The film has three different characters narrating the story but none of it feels like exposition and it's never over-bearing.

Adapted from a true story, the film focuses on the fictional Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. The boss is Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, his wife, volatile hustler Ginger and his psychotic 'friend' Nicky Santoro. All they needed to do was to keep the cash-flow at the Casino steady to satisfy the bosses back home. But it was just never meant to be. And everything implodes at the end.

Casino is filled with dozens of sub-plots, tangent stories and brilliant side-characters. James Woods is especially funny as a lowlife con-man who can't even win a fight with a ten-year-old girl. Vinny Vella also amuses as long-suffering Artie Piscano. But it's Sharon Stone who walks away with the movie. Despite starring opposite loads of well-established male lead actors she owns Casino. She was absolutely robbed at the Academy Awards when they gave the Oscar to Susan Sarandon. Stone delivered a performance so authentic that it's truly unfair the amount of criticism she gets for her other, less-important films.

The violence will satisfy gore fans. In this lovely film we have a dope with his head in a vice (after getting icepicks in his balls), a truly brutal beating with baseball bats, some moron getting a pen shoved into his neck and a cheater getting his hand mashed by a hammer. Don't let this put you off, that was the old Vegas. Nowadays you just get told not to come back.

I know most people will call it sacrilege to condemn Goodfellas but Casino is just the better film of the two, plain and simple. Better lighting, far more impressive cinematography and more entertaining characters. It just has so much going for it that Goodfellas did not.

The 1080p HD DVD is absolutely stunning and is surely reference quality stuff. The Dolby Digital+ sound is also amazing and there are plenty of extras. A total must-have.

3 out of 5 stars A good performance from Sharon.......2007-04-24

At 178 minutes long, I was expecting to be bored throughout this film, despite everyone raves about this film, along with Goodfellas. And although I did get a bit restless during it, I did find myself sucked into the film and actually trying to work out what was going to come next.

It starts off with a shocking scene, and then is told in retrospective (or so you think), from ten years previously. I certainly sat up straight up when the film started, as this is the scene you're not expecting. Although when it's repeated towards the end, it does tend to go OTT, by showing it from every angle, and showing the viewer what exactly happened.

Visually, the film is very bright, with the neon lights of the casino, and Robert De Niro's colour blinding suits (who puts pink & orange together?!) Honestly when he first walked onto the screen, I thought his wardrobe was made up by a colour-blind person, as most of his suits were OTT bright, or clashed severely. The brightness of the casino is so well done in HD, you almost start to feel like you're there, it's so real, and captures the bright lights of Vegas perfectly.

I thought Sharon Stone's role was the best out of the entire film, as her character goes through such a journey during the film, and the physical changes in her character are shocking. Her character of Ginger is an ex-hooker, who marries Robert De Niro's character, despite not loving him in the slightest. I think she was seeing dollar signs before her eyes. She becomes a mother, and also turns to drink, which ultimately, leads to a shocking end.

This film is definitely not for the fainthearted. There's a closeup scene of someone snorting cocaine, and Sharon's character, Ginger, snorts some in front of her daughter. The F word is said a grand total of 422 times, a bit unnecessary, including in the narration, which makes it a total of 2.4 times per MINUTE on average. The chain smoking is quite harsh as well, as Robert De Niro constantly had a cigarette in his hand in nearly every single scene. (I pity any non-smoking crew on set.) It was necessary to portray what it was like in those days, when smoking was considered classy, and not frowned upon as it is today. I expected there to be some continuity problems that accompanies a chain-smoking character but Robert always held his cigarettes the same distance from the lit end so that their lengths never appear to change.

This film impressed me, and I can imagine it looks so much better in HD, so it would definitely be better than the old regular DVD. But everyone lumping it along with Goodfellas doesn't bode well, cos everyone HAS to like Goodfellas it seems. It's definitely one to watch on HD, and with a TV that's more like a cinema screen would be good too!

5 out of 5 stars A pretty good movie.......2007-03-12

Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much. It was much better than I expected it to be. The picture was good and it is one of my favourite mafia movies. I would say it is worth the money to go get it. Joe Pesci did a great job playing part of the mafia.

4 out of 5 stars What a picture ! .......2007-02-19

I mean that statement in two ways. First, in my humble opinion, this is Martin Scorcese at his finest. This is better than Goodfellas by a wide margin. All of the regulars give awesome performances in this (even Sharon Stone, who I can't stand!). If you like mafia pictures, this is the BEST one to own. I also mean that it's a great picture due to the fact that it's on HD-DVD. The picture is astonishingly vivid and clear and the lights of Las Vegas really jump out of the television. It's almost 3-D ! The extras are ample, but I'd say adequate. That's the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. There is the obligitory commentary, deleted scenes, and a couple featurettes. It's all whipped cream and a cherry on top of an excellent sundae ! I do like that you can watch the extras and the movie at the same time with commentary running. This and Batman Begins are the reasons you should own an HD DVD player ! Note: I have the HD DVD drive attached to my Xbox 360 and it works brilliantly !

This 1995 family film tries to put a fun spin on the story of a paranormalist and widower (Bill Pullman) who moves into a new house with his daughter (Christina Ricci) and meets up with the ghost of a dead little boy. Based on the comic book about Casper the friendly ghost, the film is a dreary series of awkward interactions between live actors and computer effects, and you can almost see Pullman and Ricci reconsidering the project while on camera. A few cameo appearances from uncredited stars help things a bit. But there's no way, based on this film, that one could have guessed that its director, Brad Silberling, would go on to make the exceptional drama City of Angels. --Tom Keogh

Ghost therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) arrive at drafty, old Whipstaff Manor. Its greedy owner, Carrigan Crittendon (Cathy Moriarty), has hired Dr. Harvey to exorcise the house s apparitions: a friendly but lonely young ghost named Casper, who s just looking for a friend, and his outrageous uncles Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso (The Ghostly Trio). If the plan works, she and Dibs (Eric Idle), her partner-in-slime, can get their hands on the manor s fabled treasure. Meanwhile, Casper has found a kindred spirit in Kat, but the Ghostly Trio will not tolerate fleshies in their house. 3 out of 5 stars Get a life, get an afterlife.......2007-06-26

There was something about Casper that attracted me to it, although I'm now a twenty-something. Could it be something to do with the fact I never actually got around to watching it when I was young? Probably. BUT I did have the movie novelisation, complete with film stills. Hehe.

I do get in the mood to watch kiddies' movies now again (or movies aimed purely at pre-teen squealing girls), it's something to do with reliving my childhood. But with Casper, I seriously don't think I could have watched this as a kid. It was so boring! The first half anyway. I thought it kicked it towards the end, but I was bored throughout the first half, and started texting on my phone. Not a good sign.

However, I love Christina Ricci, she's definitely one of my favourite actresses, and have recently been watching some of her older films, after seeing Addams Family Values on TV! I always loved some of her older roles (Now & Then is a particular favourite), and she certainly surpassed herself in this, with having to act opposite a CGI character after all.

I do wish there had been a bit more of a storyline with Casper & his deceased dad. There wasn't much mentioned about it, I kinda had an idea in my head of what Edward Scissorhands did, with the flashback interaction scenes between Johnny Depp & Vincent Price. (Technically not his dad, the inventor, but never mind.) And is it just me, or is it never clearly explained how Casper died? I found out on IMDB that he was playing on his sled all day, and got pneumonia, but I don't remember that being said. Or was that when I was texting?

Casper is a safe family film. There are no innuendoes in this, as so many kiddie films have in them these days, which are for the adults to understand, and the kids to understand some day. It's safe, boring & predictable. I did get all emotional at the end (look out for Devon Sawa starring opposite Christina again, and sharing their second screen kiss!), but it does take a while to get going. The beginning is definitely not kids friendly.

5 out of 5 stars Casper -- great film -- how about a Box Set?.......2006-10-22

I once owned the first three Casper films on VHS. I'm glad that they're now available on DVD. I know that there are at least three films, maybe more. Here's my main idea.

There should be an Ultimate Casper Collection DVD box set. I for one am an avid collector, and I feel box sets make it more convenient to get series of movies together. Casper appeared for the first time in theaters back in 1995. It's high time that a Casper box set be released.

3 out of 5 stars CASPER NOT AS SPIRITED AS CARTOONS.......2006-10-12

There's nothing really awful about this big budget version of the classic comic/cartoon series; there's also nothing really great about it either. In transporting the friendly spook into the modern realm, we get okay effects and a few laughs, but nothing to earn it classic status. This time, Casper and his naughty trio of friends haunt an old manor recently inherited by a greedy woman and her cohort. A treasure is supposedly hidden within its walls, so she hires a ghost "shrink" and his precocious teenage daughter to rid the house of the spooks. Kids will probably find it amusing, although there is some strong language and sexual innuendo. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci try gamely to make it work, and they're adequate but it's really Cathy Moriarty in her best Cruela Deville impersonation who steals the acting honors.
All harmless fun but it didn't inspire any sequels so that should tell you something.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to watch.......2006-09-30

I was surprised to find Casper is as fun to watch now as it was when it first came out. It's actually a very entertaining film with a good cast, althought the non-human characters steal the show. I enjoyed watching Casper's uncles Stinkie, Stretch, and Fatso.

As far as the story goes, you've got this old abandoned mansion in Maine where Casper lives with his three "obnoxious" uncles. Casper is very lonely, and his uncles don't tolerate humans at all. When the former owner leaves the house to his greedy daughter Carrigan (Cathy Moriarty), she comes running in search of a hidden treasure. She and her partner in crime (Eric Idle) don't last long in the house. With some secret from Casper, Carrigan gets in contact with a ghost shrink named Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and invites him to the house. This makes Casper happy because he has a potential new friend in Harvey's daughter Kat (Christina Ricci). From there, there are many subplots that are drawn out well, and you can't help but feel sorry for Casper.

Over all, the animation and digital effects were done well, nothing too over the top. Rhe interaction between ghosts and humans is natural and believable. This is a great family film because kids will surely enjoy all of the ghostly antics, and adults will find themselves laughing along frequently.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Movie!.......2007-07-09

I think everyone who said this movie was awful was wrong. This movie is SUPERB for a mini series. Also for a Hallmark movie this movie had AWESOME special effects, a great cast, and even included a great deal of comedy. I actually prefer the longer movies, and if you don't like them then DON'T buy them!! It's fun getting lost in these fantasy worlds, and I really enjoy the genre of The Mummy meets Indiana Jones!! For 7.99 I highly recommend this movie, it was worth the buy.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......2007-06-26

Not knowing what to expect, especially after getting this movie for under
10$, i came out of this ordeal in pretty good shape.. What saves this movie is having some good experience actors that lifted this movie. There was enough special effects to make it interesting...and India makes a pretty good Egypt...as this is where they filmed the movie.
I do recomment at least a viewing of this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Stupid , bad, cheesy, and ridiculous .......2007-05-15

So this is a review of the first 11 minutes. (I just could not watch anymore.) The only reason why I think there aren't many bad reviews of this movie is that most people with taste stayed away from it. I was one who thought, "what the hell, this could be fun..." uh, no. Not in the slightest little tiny bit.

Casper Van Dien is miscast in this role. He doesn't come off as goofy or charming, or interesting, or intelligent, rather stupid, and annoying. Eye rolls all around for his performance. Plot summary: It's the Emerald Tablet (I know folks, I know!!) that is broken up in four parts, put them together and you have the power to control the world. On one side we have the bad guys, called, brace yourselves, "The Hell-Fire Counsel" and what is it they want? Ok, prepare yourselves for the shocker, "world domination through the powers of the occult and black magic." Little ol' Casper wants to use the tablet "for peace and prosperity for the entiiiire WORLD!!" Yes, it was said just as cheesy as I typed it. The Hell-Fire Counsel wants to use the power to become "invincible."

This movie tries too hard to be like The Mummy which was infinitely better in every single aspect. Ok that said, if you still want to see this movie, heaven help you, remember, you have the power at your hands.... It's called the fast Fwd button on your remote control! In the meantime, you can always "Mystery Science Theater" it...

or better yet, buy / rent something else.

5 out of 5 stars King Tuts Tomb.......2007-05-07

I LOVED THIS MOVIE BECAUSE IT HAS ALOT OF ACTION AND ADVENTURE IN IT. I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE MORE MLIKE THIS ONE!

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad time killer, but goes on WAY TO LONG.......2007-04-02

This was originally a Hallmark channel mini-series and it's not that bad,but it was broken up over two nights and played well in that format. If you watch it like that , with a break in between , you might be better off than watching it in one setting. Watching the whole three hours at one time really shows the hole in the plot and wares on the nerves. A special mention needs to be made about the fact that some of the F/X's are not kid friendly , even though this is a T.V. mini-series. Watch it first to see if you want children under 10 to see it.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of Hidden messages.......2007-06-27

I bought this dvd at a discount store for four dollars. The reason I bought it was because I remembered some of the cartoons as a kid and wanted to see them again. I was surprised at the number of hidden images I never noticed watching when I was young. Many cartoons were clearly racist going as far as showing a swastika, that's right a swastika on one of the tents in a cartoon. And its noticable too. Right there in the front of the screen stark black against a white background. Its worth a second look if your interested in that sort of trivia but I wouldn't let the kids watch some of the cartoons until you view them yourself.

From the bridge of the Fleet Battlestation Ticonderoga, with its sweeping galactic views, to the desolate terrain of planet Klendathu, teeming with shrieking, fire-spitting, brain-sucking special effects creatures, acclaimed director PAUL VERHOEVEN crafts a dazzling epic based on Robert A. Heinlein's classic sci-fi adventure. CASPER VAN DIEN, DINA MEYER, DENISE RICHARDS, JAKE BUSEY, NEIL PATRICK HARRIS, PATRICK MULDOON, and MICHAEL IRONSIDE star as the courageous soldiers who travel to the distant and desolate Klendathu system for the ultimate showdown between the species.

This movie is just fun, almost funny at times. Not to be taken seriously.

Simply put, my Sleepy Hollow DVD looks better than the Blu-Ray version I purchased. Very grainy and poor res. Playing on PS# with Samsung 52" LCD 1080p.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful movie with beautiful picture and sound..........2007-02-11

As a child I was familiar with the headless horseman. Although I never remember the ghost being so homicidal. This movie is rated R although much of the content is not so terribly inappropriate. Of course it can be violent at times with the death scenes overall this is an excellent tale. The story is not overloaded and is easy to understand so I would think children would enjoy it. Tim Burton helped recreate this tale but not in a horrific way. The sound is excellent and the visuals are all that more beautiful on BluRay.

The story takes place during the turn of the century in New York. Johnny Depp who plays Crane does so very well. The acting is excellent in this tale Burton seems to recreate this time very well. Clothing, architechture, and even language seems to be in sync with the year 1799. I have watched many of Burtons films and was happy to see his use of imagery. Although like most of Burtons films they are dark. The movie has some wonderful scenes but doesn't seem to keep me on the edge of my seat.

If you haven't seen this wonderful film or are curious to watch it on BluRay I would say it's excellent. The quality is not as great as newer movies but in general it still looks great. Good enough to see every detail on Depps face.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Tim Burton Film, Great In High Def, Blu-Ray!!!.......2006-10-02

While this isn't Tim Burton's best, but it is still a Very, very good, Very FUN movie!
And this Blu-Ray high def version looks absolutely great. A HUGE improvement over the standard release DVD version!
I would call this a must have for your Blu-Ray DVD collection whether you are a Tim Burton fan, or just enjoy a good tongue in cheek gothic scare-fest. Perfect film for Halloween!

2 out of 5 stars HD review (of course the movie is great)..........2007-06-05

Everyone knows the movie and you're here because you love it, like me. So this is my HD review. For the average person, it's fine but for videophiles, it's pretty dissapointing. Another early HD DVD they wipped out. (Just like early generation dvd's, this will get remastered down the road I bet- look at the Fifth Element on Bluray- they're already remastering it). The opening sequences with the lettter/wax are horrible and the noise in people's faces throughout the film are just bad and annoying. Sure some parts look great but most of the film has a digital video look which is a shame. To its credit- it does look better than the original dvd but you know something. I'd almost rather watch the older standard one "upsampled" on my 56" RPTV because it's softer than the really "digital" looking HD DVD version.
I wanted a high def transfer of all the fog and mist that gives it the feel of film because this movie is worth that "look". I've seen Apocalypse Now on "HDnet movies" and it can be done. They just didn't do it here. God bless the folks that think this is a great HD disc. Their lives are easier to please than mine.

    2 out of 5 stars HD-DVD Picture Quality Review.......2007-02-16

The photography of Sleepy Hollow is absolutely stunning. Emmanual Lubezki received a well-deserved Academy Award for it. Naturally, my expectations for this HD-DVD were quite high...

The source material seemed to be in good shape in every aspect, BUT:

The biggest issue I have with the picture quality is the heavy use of a digital noise reduction filter. This filter not only introduces terrible blocking artifacts but also kills image details - something you don't want to do with a hi-def format!

Apparently someone thought the film looks too grainy... Let me get this straight: IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK GRAINY due to the fast film stocks used in low light situations and the "bleach bypass" process used in the lab to achieve the gritty, desaturated high-contrast look.

Other HD-DVDs have shown that the VC-1 compression technology is perfectly capable of preserving even high amounts of film grain (e.g. "Dune", "Casino") and therefore a very natural, film-like image. For a film with a running time of 105 minutes the use of any digital "grain reduction" is simply unnecessary and stupid.

As a result "Sleepy Hollow" looks very processed and artificial (in a digital kind of way) from start to finish.

After watching 10 HD-DVDs this is the first one I'm really disappointed with.

Picture Quality Rating: 2/5 (below average)

VERY GOOD FILM IN ALL SENSE. VERY GOOD QUALITY OF HD DVD

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone........2006-11-03

This movie, much like many of Tim Burton's movies, are not for everyone. If you like the movies Beetlejuice, Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, or Corpse Bride, then you will probably not be thrown off by Tim's unique style. This movie is every bit as atmospheric (and wierd, some might say) as any of the above mentioned movies. Personally, I love his movies (hence the 5 star rating) and think that this is one of the best!

There is a great cast here, and Johnny Depp, in particular, shines in a role that seems made for him.

The palpable textures and ambiance make this movie really stand out on HD-DVD! If you like Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and have an HD-DVD player then run and buy this NOW!
