Disc Two: Betty Boop and Friends

This flirtatious flappe is at it again! Delight to the surrealcraziness of the bodacious Betty Boop as she froclics along with Bimbo the Dog, Koko the Clown, and Grampy the Professor in classiccartoons from the 1930s. Plus a menagerie of animated animals including Scottie the Dog, Herman the Mouse, and those crazy donkeys - Hankey and Spankey!

Disc Five: At the Farm & Sing - A- Long Fun

2 out of 5 stars Lots of Hidden messages.......2007-06-27

I bought this dvd at a discount store for four dollars. The reason I bought it was because I remembered some of the cartoons as a kid and wanted to see them again. I was surprised at the number of hidden images I never noticed watching when I was young. Many cartoons were clearly racist going as far as showing a swastika, that's right a swastika on one of the tents in a cartoon. And its noticable too. Right there in the front of the screen stark black against a white background. Its worth a second look if your interested in that sort of trivia but I wouldn't let the kids watch some of the cartoons until you view them yourself.

5 out of 5 stars It was great.......2007-05-21

the only thing that was wrong was the case that the movie was in was cracked but the movies still worked thanks

1 out of 5 stars rodneyb.......2007-04-11

man, this is ia bad(spelled B*A*D!!!)collection.save yourself some money and please don't get this...you've been warned.

4 out of 5 stars Nice mix of classic cartoons........2007-04-08

Most cartoons remind me of my childhood and that's exactly why I got the DVD. I am somewhat of a collector and don't want to forget all the good memories. Production quality is A+. Good mix of cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars great deal.......2006-10-29

this was a gift for my son. he loves these dvds . what a great deal 4 dvds for the price was incredible.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE - EVERY TOON HAS BIG UGLY COMPANY LOGO.......2006-05-19

What a disappointment - EVERY cartoon in this collection has a BIG, UGLY yellow-orange "MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT" LOGO slapped on it! Adding to insult is the fact that some entries (Cobweb Hotel, for example) are so poorly recorded as to be unwatchable: blocky artifacts, flashing, focus problems and more. I threw mine in the trash and will NEVER buy a Mill Creek disc again, ever.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE INTRODUCTION TO 1930s-1950s TOONS!.......2006-04-26

For the price you really can't complain too much. There are about 2/3 of the set that I rate as good cartoons that I'd watch again. Obviously some real clunkers, like THREE STOOGES, the HOFFNUNG & the MR PIPER ones which don't appeal to me liking the bizarre 1930s ones, fortunately there are lots of those on here! Many are typical public domain quality, the worst one is the wonderful COBWEB HOTEL Fleisher Toon which is rough at the start. Some have extra noise too from worn films. 5 stars for 2/3 being good toons & the price.

There are loads of Popeye (23 of them, almost all the post Fleischer ones), just one Casper & Woody Woodpecker, which may disappoint, but the Woody one is a great early 40s one.

BEWARE buying this set if you own the 100 Cartoon collection (with the dog pen drawing on the front) and the 101 Set (from Australia) as these duplicate most of this set. The 101 set copies 75% of this set in the same order!

Spooky Toons culls 13 vintage cartoons, each centering on some poor bug-eyed creature contracting a usually misguided case of the creeps. To say it's fraught with the sort of frightful scenes that remind one of bats and broomsticks, though, would be misleading. Mostly, these nuggets (most less than 10 minuts long) jog nostalgia. Casper, star of two segments, was never fond of scaring folks to begin with, and Betty Boop, the other double-billed character, is too cutesie-poo to pull off a portrayal of genuine fear. Still, Spooky Toons ought to sit well with fans of the form and those more concerned with old-fashioned fun than Halloween-focused fare, as it trots out some early, largely forgotten gems. For instance, there's Balloon Land, about a town full of walking, talking balloons forever on the run from the roguish, rhyming Pin Cushion ("I always have a pin at hand / That's the reason I am panned"), and Ouija Board, a partly animated featurette following the adventures of a cartoon clown who leaps off a storyboard and wreaks havoc in his studio's art department. Another standout--Huffless, Puffless--seems misplaced in this collection, but it's still a joy to watch. It has a crew of hipster dragons haranguing a nonsmoking member of the tribe: "John, stop puttin' it on. Ain't no joke--you've gotta smoke!" In the end, of course, the puffless dragon overpowers his air-polluting peers, much the same way this compilation's winning lineup overpowers its watered-down theme. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Toons, Yes. Spooky? Fugeddaboutit!.......2007-06-16

As previous critics have noted, there is little in this copmpilation of (apparently) public-domain cartoons to raise a chill, though it will raise more than a hackle or two.

There's not much here of a scary nature. The video transfers are often muddy and dark. And this compiation's producer found necessity in either enhancing the cartoons' original sound effects, or merely adding new ones (often loud enough to muffle the original films' music and dialogue!).

A must to avoid.

3 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-03-17

It's not something you want to own, but I borrowed it from the library and it was kind of worth it.

1. There's Good Boos Tonight
This has a great beginning, but as all the Casper cartoons are, it's starts getting all cutesy and it isn't even funny. I never really have liked Casper.

2. Fright to the Finish
One of the better Paramount Popeye's, but the ending is so dumb it doesn't even fit with the rest of the cartoon. Not as good as the Fleischer Popeyes, but have you ever seen a Paramount that was (besides THE HUNGRY GOAT)?

3. Jasper in a Jam
I love the Jasper Puppetoons, but this one isn't one of the better ones. Why didn't they put: Jasper's Pie on there instead?

4. Jack Frost
It has a Halloween scene, but of all the spooky cartoons produced, this wouldn't be a top choice, it's more of a Christmas cartoon. Not to say I don't like it, this is one of my favorite cartoons ever made, but it isn't spooky.

5. The Lunar Luger
This isn't even attempting to be spooky. It's stupid. The animation is cheap. But if you get a kick out of dumb 60s style superhero cartoons, you will like this one.

6. Balloon land
Even though this is great, it isn't spooky either, it looks like it's summer or something.

7. Spooking about Africa
This is a lot better when you fast-forward through the whole thing (although it's still slow) this is one of the least spooky Casper's and one of the least funny.

8. The Scared Crows
Not one of the best Fleischers. Betty Boop is messed up and it isn't Halloweeny.

9. The Huffless Puffless Dragon
Though simply animated, it's one of the best cartoons on this collection...it's still not scary, though!

10. Is my Palm Red?
One of the worst Fleischer cartoons ever! I could go so far as to say THE worst. Fleischer is usually top-notch. What happened?

11. Wot a Night
A Tom and Jerry cartoon. Not the cat and mouse, but the tall guy and the skinny guy. It's really weird... just the way I like it!

12. The Ouija Board
An Out of the Inkwell cartoon. Those are usually great, but this isn't the best one, and once again: IT ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY SPOOKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was another one, but I can't remember what is was.
I only gave it three stars because of: Jack Frost, Balloonland and the Huffless Puffless Dragon

1 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2001-02-06

A collection of cartoons loosely based on the title of the collection, but then it depends on your definition of "spooky". The Popeye cartoon does have a halloween theme and the Casper cartoons can be considered spooky, but that's it. I'm curious how the cartoons, "Jack Frost" and "Baloon Land" even made it into this collection. Misleading title aside, this collection should only be sought after by someone interested in ANY vintage cartoons. No noteworthy catoons here, a real disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Some Real Gems Here.......2006-12-27

I'm not a big fan of the movie 50-Packs. Most are throw-away losers and not worth the price no matter how cheap. But this 100-Pack of old cartoons is a pretty good deal. The modern cartoons in production today are so pathetically abysmal that I won't let my grandkids watch them. In their effort to be politically correct and multicultural they've managed to take out all the humor. I show the kids these old gems and they love them. Kids are smart enough to know that no one is really getting hurt and it's all for fun.

As with all these multi-packs, be ready for some sub-standard audio/video quality. These are not digitally remastered. But for the price they are enjoyable and your kids can see cartoons that are actually funny. Beware that the "Tom & Jerry" listed on the pack is not the cat and mouse series that everyone is familiar with. This Tom & Jerry series is from the 1930s and is about two men. There is still a lot of good stuff here for the price.

(I would also recommend the Looney Tunes Classics that are available at Amazon. These are many of the Warner Brothers cartoons that have been remastered with great results.)

2 out of 5 stars Mostly rubbish, but worth having if a little cheaper........2006-09-27

I live in Australia and this sort of public domain stuff is available on DVD for about $1.50 US, and U know you can get them for $1 at bnricks and mortar stores in the US, so even the $26 price tag for 10 public domain DVDs is hardly impressive.

I'd say there's maybe 2 DVD's total of good stuff here, but chances are you have most of it somewhere else if you have many PD compilations. The cover is misleading too, with its highlighting Betty Boop and Felix. There are 4 Betty Boops, and just 1 Felix - and that's not even a Fleischer, but a mediocre Famous studios one. The saving graces are a healthy serving of Popeye (though again, nearly all (if not all) later Famous Studios stuff - which is probably the best stuff Famous ever did, but that's not saying much.

There is also a decent amount of Van Beuren's Tom and Jerry, though I've seen more extensive and better selections elsewhere for less, and the couple of Toonerville Trolley cartoons are a nice pickup. Apart from that there is probably 7 or 8 DVDs worth of material which varies from watchable to awful; the bottom of the barrel being the Hoffnung Orchestra stuff, which is just utterly excruciatingly awful, and doesn't even have the excuse of being all that old. If you've never seen a giraffe in blackface, check out 'Camptown Races'. Or the excruiatingly bad Molly Moo Cow from VB.

A friend gave me this, and I'm glad I have it is, as there a few gems in there, and if I didn't have the Popeye stuff, it might be worth it just for that, but let's face it, this is a thrown together compilation of mostly mediocre to poor PD cartoons, and even at $26.99 it's not really cheap. If you don't mind paying... say $9 per disc for reasonably decent, unrestored PD cartoons, and getting 7 DVDs of mostly rubbish thrown in, fair enough.

Check out your $1 stores first.

Decent packaging though.

4 out of 5 stars So many old cartoons!.......2006-07-17

If you like to sit back and remember the first cartoons then this pack is for you. There are so many cartoons on so many disks that your kids won't be bored for days and most of the memorable old cartoons are on here, like Heckle & Jeckyl etc. so you will watch them too.

Just remember alot of these are in black and white (because obviously they are old cartoons) and you can hardly hear most of them, so your speakers will have to be up! At least i had to turn my speakers way up...

Lots of old memories ran through my head watching popeye and Felix the Cat!

4 out of 5 stars some older cartoons not seen in a while, not political correct but if your older you may find bliss here.......2006-04-27

i own many of these mega pack collections and i must say i like this one. like i said these are older cartoons(some in black and white) and to be sure not political correct(racial sterotypes and the like), but some of these are very good and even my two boys have found some of them very funny.

if you don't mind all that is stated above you will like this collection. most of the transfers are good but remember these are not cartoons seen very often and as such they are not as well taken care of as tom and jerry and the looney tunes are.

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection of PD cartoons.......2006-02-22

Large box with 12 double sided DVD's each in it's own cardboard sleeve.

As stated before the Tom & Jerry cartoons are not the cat and mouse but 2 men instead. The New Three Sttoges are cartoons only with no live action in them.

Adult cartton buffs (such as myself) will like this set but todays children may not as many of these cartoons were made for an adult audience. My 11 year old daughter watched these with me (we ran 3 or 4 at a time so the set would last awhile) and enjoyed most of the cartoons but then I've let her see older cartoons (such as Betty Boop) with me since she was 6 years old. Better to get todays kids cartoon sets made by Warner Brothers with characters such as Bugs Bynny, Daffy Duck & Tweety...

1 out of 5 stars Beware Alpha!.......2005-08-19

I noticed the studio is listed as Gotham. It is actually from Alpha Videos - notorious for exremely poor quality transfers. I am in the process of returning it. If you don't mind the static, red hue and snow, go ahead.

4 out of 5 stars SAME TOONS RECYCLED AGAIN!.......2004-12-15

The toons in this set are not classics because they are so great, but rather because of the fact they are vintage toons from the golden age of animation of the 30's and 40's before studios started making the animation cheaper with less frames.

These same toons show up on several different collections so basically buy the one that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Jack Frost is an Ub Iwerks toon from 1934. Jack Frost arrives in the forest, painting the leaves on the trees and warning the animals to prepare for the winter. An inquisitive young grizzly bear decides he wants to see what the world looks like when everyone else is hibernating. When Old Man Winter catches him unawares, however, he needs Jack Frost's help in getting back home to his warm bed.

Santa's Surprise (1947) features the first appearance of Little Audrey. Little Audrey and some other kids stow away inside Santa's sleigh. While Santa sleeps, the kids decide to give him a Christmas present of his own

"Somewhere in Dreamland" 1936 is a Fleischer studios toon. It's the story of two poor children who are out collecting firewood when they pass by a toy store, market and finally a bakery. They drool over the wares in the bakery window but walk away before the owner can come out and present them with two cupcakes. The kids go home and eat a meager supper before going to bed. They both dream they are in dreamland, where everything is free--cookies, candy, cakes, popcorn and toys. When they wake up it's all gone but the three merchants have stopped by to lay out a huge feast for them.

"Chrismas Comes But Once a year" Fleisher from 1936. A group of lonely kids are given broken toys, leaving these sad youngsters without a Merry Christmas. Professor Grampy, sees the unhappy kids. The brilliant inventor puts on his thinking cap to find a solution this problem. He heads into the orphanage and creates a series of homemade toys from kitchen utensils. Then he decorates the main room with soap chips, cotton and other items, creating a Santa suit from red cloth, stovepipes and a red bag. He rings a dinner bell and calls the kids in. The kids, seeing Grampy as Santa, rush in happily. They play with their new and better toys.

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" Fleischer 1944. The Fleischer version of the classic tale.

"Hector's hectic Life" Paramount 1948. On Christmas Eve, Prince the dog's owner threatens to throw him out if he causes any more trouble. Just then, a basket arrives on the doorstep containing three puppies that look suspiciously like Prince. The puppies proceed to trash the house while Prince desperately tries to conceal the damage from his owner.

"Snow Foolin'" Paramount 1949 Singalong about the first day of winter, when all the animals go ice skating. It is December 21, and the animals in the forest must contend with a literal avalanche of snow. Winter is not all that bad, though. After donning their winter coats, they will be able to enjoy themselves skiing, skating on a frozen lake, and tossing snowballs. In just a few days, one and all will be singing "Jingle Bells."

Wonderful collection for its historical value.

3 out of 5 stars A collection of public domain 30s/40s Christmas cartoons.......2004-09-12

"Christmas Cartoon Classics" has the usual collection of old public-domain Christmas cartoons that we have come to expect on these various classic Christmas cartoon DVD compilations. This collection is in fact identical to the "Classic Christmas Cartoons" DVD released by Delta Music Incorporated.

Each of these cartoons are good fun, and true "classics." The real standouts of the collection are the Fleischer Bros. cartoons, and Ub Iwerk's spooky "Jack Frost." Being from the 30's and 40's, several of them are depression-influenced, showing sad-eyed orphans and poor kids lusting for Christmas treats, and may contain a few stereotypes of an unpleasant nature, but nothing terribly shocking.

Definitely for lovers of old cartoons only, or very young children who don't mind the different styles and slightly odd characters.

The DVD is of poor quality, which is expected for such ancient cartoons. Restoration takes money, and this collection of public domain prints is just to get them out there. Nothing fancy, but nice to have in any form.

The seven cartoons are:

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Max Fleischer, 1948)
Christmas Comes But Once a Year (Dave Fleischer, 1936)
Somewhere in Dreamland (Dave Fleischer, 1936)
Jack Frost (Ub Iwerks, 1934)
Santa's Surprise (Seymour Kneitel, 1947)
Hector's Hectic Life (Bill Tytla, 1948)
Snow Foolin' (1949)

The outstanding film in this collection is Pedro Serrazino's elegant "The Story of the Cat and the Moon," the tale of a frustrated lover of an elusive feline. The artist skillfully juxtaposes areas of black and white, and plays with reflections and reversed images to create a graceful, pleasing visual essay. The rest of the collection consists of "B" and "C" level films from the festival circuit that offer an occasional interesting moment or striking image, but fail as sustained narratives. Jiri Barta uses live-action footage and stop-motion animation of crumbling department store mannequins to present a grim commentary on the regimented life of contemporary urban society in the overly long "Club of the Discarded." Paul Vester cuts between grainy live action and various animated styles to illustrate "interviews, hypnotic regression tapes, and original drawings" by supposed alien abduction victims. The array of animated visuals remains less than the sum of its parts, and the viewer is left with the feeling that Vester has exploited his unimpressive subjects. Julie Zammarchi uses a similar palette of visuals styles in "Ape," but the results amount to little more than a shaggy-dog--or -monkey--story. Unrated; suitable for ages 16 and up for sexual situations, nudity, and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Five strange, sustained visions.......2007-01-18

Jiri Barta's "Club of the Discarded" is my favorite of this bunch, a stop-animation featuring outdated and damaged mannequins. It comes across as eerie but ambiguous, leaving a lotfor the viewer to bring to the imagery. Serrazina's "Story of the Cat and the Moon" is elegant and eloquent, a sweet dessert for finishing off this visual feast. Other pieces, including "Abductees," didn't do as much for me - I just don't feel any need to respond to alien abduction stories in a serious way, and Vester missed the huge potential for commenting on the many human weaknesses involved.

It's a mixed bag with, including some very strong selections. If you like animation that explores off the beaten path, you'll probably enjoy this, or parts of it.

    1 out of 5 stars What a flop.......2004-02-26

Anyone expecting either good animation or good noir is going to be very disappointed with this collection. By and large, the films are monumentally dull. The brief "Cat and the Moon" provides almost the only glimmer of interest; the rest of the disc feels like a bunch of student exercises.

This disc will probably bore you silly, despite the trio of five-star reviews below -- all by "A viewer from Chicago." (Wow, what a coincidence that three Windy City residents all loved this tedious DVD and used the same words to describe it.) If you're looking for great animation with a dark twist, try Jan Svankmajer or the Brothers Quay instead.

5 out of 5 stars coolest animation around.......2002-01-16

This is a wonderful collection of bizarre, beautiful, and dark animated films which have won many prizes internationally. You will really enjoy this- a special treat to have this "best of the underground" distributed at such a low price. Worth watching for years to come!

    5 out of 5 stars cartoons.......2001-12-31

This is a great group of animated films from the underground: funny, dark, and beautiful

5 out of 5 stars cool and dark animation.......2001-11-07

This compilation will not please the conservatives who adore Walt Disney, nor will it win any Oscars (too outrageous). But if you like underground comics, alternative music, and are interested in what the best of the experimental animators are doing - then you will love this tape. Paul Vester, Suzan Pitt, and Jiri Barta whose dark and beautifully realized work are a part of Cartoon Noir are some of the best underground animators working today. The films in this compilation are original and striking examples of where animation can take the imagination. These works ran theatrically at the Cinema Village in New York and received rave reviews throughout the United States. Don't listen to Mr. Establishment, Charles Solomon.
