    5 out of 5 stars Important DVD.......2007-04-05

A large clinical trial funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), known as CATIE (Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness), compared the effectiveness and side effects of five antipsychotic medications--both new and older antipsychotics--that are used to treat people with schizophrenia. For more information on CATIE, visit http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/catie.cfm.

Length of Treatment. Like diabetes or high blood pressure, schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that needs constant management. At the moment, it cannot be cured, but the rate of recurrence of psychotic episodes can be decreased significantly by staying on medication. Although responses vary from person to person, most people with schizophrenia need to take some type of medication for the rest of their lives as well as use other approaches, such as supportive therapy or rehabilitation.
Relapses occur most often when people with schizophrenia stop taking their antipsychotic medication because they feel better, or only take it occasionally because they forget or don't think taking it regularly is important. It is very important for people with schizophrenia to take their medication on a regular basis and for as long as their doctors recommend. If they do so, they will experience fewer psychotic symptoms.

No antipsychotic medication should be discontinued without talking to the doctor who prescribed it, and it should always be tapered off under a doctor's supervision rather than being stopped all at once.

    .
The names of several manufacturers of psychoactive drugs are listed as funders for the production of this DVD. It appears to me to be more of an advertisement for psychoactive drugs than an attempt to educate people about so-called mental illness or so-called schizophrenia.

It is my opinion, as well as the opinion of scores of leading professionals, that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are NOT DISEASES, but psychological reactions to ongoing social-environmental trauma or stress.

Neuroleptic pharmaceutical drugs merely produce a "chemical lobotomy," keeping the patients dependent on the psychiatrist, who is merely, in my opinion based on my own experience, exploiting his/her patients for his/her own economic gain, and for the gain of the CEOs and owners of pharmaceutical company stock.

Mood stabilizers, such as lithium bicarbonate, are very dangerous drugs. A responsible physician would NEVER prescribe any so-called "mood stabilizer."

Virtually all of the bizarre behavior of so-called mental patients is the result of their having been drugged with neuroleptics. The symptoms one observes are not the symptoms of "mental illness." They are the symptoms of NIDS - "neuroleptic induced deficit syndrome."

Most people wind up on a shrink's couch because a misbehaving parent or surrogate parent or spouse or employer has discredited them as being "crazy" in order to exonerate themselves from the condemnation of others. That is MY opinion!

I would recommend that the reader-customer purchase a copy of Robert Whitaker's "Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine, And The Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill."

I would also recommend Bruce Ennis's "Prisoners of Psychiatry" and "A Long Day's Journey Into Schizophrenia."

It is my opinion, based on my own tragic experience, that ALL forms of psychiatric drug-therapy should be outlawed! It is also my opinion, as well as the opinion of others, that psychiatry is largely a very dangerous scam that does the patient far more harm than good!

What people need in lieu of psychiatric treatment is good role models (preferably those who do not use alcohol or any other psychoactive drug), financial independence (facilitated through Social Security) and the opportunity to learn and practice a trade or profession or business of their own choosing!

Taking psychotropic drugs should NOT be a prerequisite for receiving Supplementary Security Income, decent subsidized housing, and an opportunity to learn and independently practice a trade or profession.

Balanced nutrition, regular exercise and a serene home-work environment will stabilize the nervous system. It is vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids found in a well-balanced, low-fat vegetarian-fish-white meat poultry diet that builds healthy neurotransmitters, not drugs!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed by students.......2005-05-31

I showed this video to a class Iu was teaching about mental health problems. I found it to be very accurate and it did a good job of keeping the students attention. It's not like some movies that have 30 year olds acting the roles of high school kids. The students said the could relate to the subject matter since it was being portrayed by people their own age. Overall I think this was a great investment.

    1 out of 5 stars Outdated, erroneous, and stigmatizing . . . terrible!.......2005-02-14

This recently-produced video titled "Understanding Mental Illness" contains information and classifications of mental illness that pre-date the DSM-III. One of the most glaring examples is its description/classification of schizophrenia as a "Personality Disorder." What's worse, really bad actors bulge their eyes and display stereotypical (and often violent or menacing) behaviors during poorly-produced vignettes. For example, a woman trembles with "fear" as a rubber spider is pulled across a blanket as she lies in bed. I've seen more realistic scenes (and better actors) in 1950s era 3-D movies! This video/DVD is far worse than any of the old 16mm health education films that I suffered through as a high school student. I would have rated this video/DVD as a "Zero-Star" if it was an available option.
