Description
During production of the documentary, "Geoff Hunt: Portrait of a Marine Artist," SEA~TV was allowed full access to Hunt's Wimbledon studio. During two days of the production Geoff allowed a rare, candid shoot of his work in progress. Geoff was beginning the sketch for a painting, which would ultimately be titled First Shots. It depicts the first cannon shots fired at Lord Nelson's ship, Victory, as it approached the famous Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

In "Geoff Hunt: Painting in the Studio", we join Geoff as he is sketching and then he goes on to begin painting the ship, the sails, the sky and the sea. He describes his technique and explains how he builds a painting and achieves the accuracy and detail. Then we see him six months later at work on the final painting. This video also contains commentary from marine art expert and gallery owner, J. Russell Jinishian.

It is a rare chance to watch a world-class artist create a painting in its crucial formative stages and see how it emerges into the final painting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary!.......2006-05-26

I disagree strongly with the first review. This is an instructional
documentary, not a how-to video. It even says it's a documentary in
the Editorial Review. You can learn a tremendous amount from it, whether you are an artist or an art fan. Who wouldn't learn from watching a fabulous artist like Hunt in his studio It's not a brush-dabbing teaching lesson and there are plenty of those. It is about how to build the basic elements of a painting. There's not much of that conceptual, macro kind of instruction out there. As for the camera-work. I have taken a few video courses in college and sometimes you have to do what it takes to shoot a good documentary. Taking time to set up multiple cameras and stuff would have taken the spontaneity out of it and much of the artistry may have been lost. This video works for me big time! It is a rare work of art in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Intriguing to watch. Recommend it to anyone........2006-05-25

This is a great edition to my Geoff Hunt Collection. I've been a fan of Hunt since the early days of getting into Patrick O'brian (since Hunt painted every Patrick O'brian book cover). It's very interesting to discover the process by which Hunt paints. I never realized the complexity of it before. This makes for very interesting viewing. I like the way hunt takes you through each step of his technique. I'm glad I added this to Portrait of a Marine Artist DVD, this is another good one. Liked the music alot too. I heard somewhere that this won an award. Anyway, it should, it's a nicely done documentary.
