The First Christmas

Starring:Various
Studio: Vision Video
Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:
Description
Winner of Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video and the Crown Award for Best Children's Video.
A magnificent production that offers a fresh, new way to recapture the meaning and mystery of the Christmas story. This colorful, clay-animated program of "The First Christmas" is narrated by Christopher Plummer and will delight adults and children alike.
It tells the traditional story of the birth of Jesus, beginning with Mary and Joseph's trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem. We witness their encounter with the innkeeper who "has no room for them," but provides shelter in a stable where Mary gives birth. We see the announcement to the shepherds and follow the Magi who trek across the desert guided by the mysterious star.
Rebecca, the innkeeper's daughter, and Daniel, the shepherd boy, provide a strong supporting cast. And finally, the mood is enhanced by colloquial dialogue and familiar music in the background. You'll recognize traditional carols such as "Silent Night," "We Three Kings," "Joy to the World," "O Come All Ye Faithful,"and "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Includes English and Spanish language tracks.

Mike Myers's first feature role without his Wayne's World wig is a performance at odds with the best interests of the movie. Myers plays a single guy who always manages to find something seriously wrong with each of his girlfriends. His new love (Nancy Travis), a butcher, may be the perfect woman, except for one thing: she might be a "black-widow" killer who prefers dispatching husbands with a sharp instrument. Robbie Fox's original script has a fine shape and strong, black-comedy material within it. But Myers creates unnecessary dissonance by playing a variety of characters (including an irascible Scotsman like the one he often played on Saturday Night Live) and accenting his skills as an improvisational comic (such as impersonating the soothing cadences of a massage therapist). It's not that Myers isn't funny doing all that, but it has nothing to do with the movie. Directed by Thomas Schlamme (Miss Firecracker). --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I love this movie.......2007-05-19
As with most good movies, the main characters might be the worm, but the backups are what reel you in. This movie is so very watchable, and Mike Meyers is actually funny (!!) in it, but for me, it's all about Anthony La Paglia and Alan Arkin. Sure, it's maybe three scenes in the entire movie, but they really steal the show.
This is a seriously underrated movie. Watch it. You won't regret it.
A slice of life.......2007-05-06
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) self made poet, has successfully avoided tying the knot with several women by finding out their flaws in the "nick" of time. Looks like his luck may be running out.
He falls in love with the local butcher, Harriet Michaels (Nancy Travis), who may be more of a cut-up than she appears. Will Charlie Axe-cept her at face value or will his suspicious nature once again interfere with marital bliss?
If he takes the plunge will his friend (Anthony LaPaglia) find out that Charlie is not paranoid and come to his rescue (in time)?
What a gem!.......2007-05-06
One of my favorite movies: unerringly charming and hilarious. It's a romantic comedy starring Mike Myers and Nancy Travis, obtrusively set in San Francisco. Myers spends most of the movie believing that Travis, his new love interest, may be a serial killer.
Stunningly, the movie flopped in cinemas. (This despite supremely competent writing and hysterical supporting work by actors such as Anthony LaPaglia and Amanda Plummer.)
I have heard that Myers was so despondent after its failure that he took TWO YEARS off of filmmaking in a somber funk.
Whoa! What a loss.
For my part, I've watched it maybe a dozen times and usually find something new to laugh at with each viewing. Even when I don't, this movie is guaranteed to paste a smile on my face for the rest of the day.
I have to say something else: I have never watched a movie that has made me want to move to a certain place so much as this one makes you want to move to San Francisco!
Pity that the powers that be show no signs of coming out with a "collector's edition" or anything like that. All you're getting here is the film itself, essentially. In case you're confused by what Amazon says up there, it's one of those disks where one side is fullscreen and the other is widescreen.
By the way, if anybody knows how Nancy Travis's character was able to afford that stunning loft apartment in the heart of San Francisco while working as an assistant at a butcher shop, please drop me a line. I do believe I chose the wrong career!
So funny!.......2007-03-08
This is one of my all time favorite Mike Myers movies! So funny!
so I married an axe murderer.......2007-01-28
The product is first rate. I love this movie, I hadn't seen this movie since school. I have had no problems with the products frow amazon.

Perhaps if The Bishop's Wife had lapsed on its copyright and fallen into the public domain like It's a Wonderful Life, it would be as much a Christmas staple as that classic. It certainly deserves to be. Dudley (Cary Grant) is an angel sent down by the prayers of a new bishop (David Niven). The bishop is trying to build a new cathedral, and he's so entrenched in his fundraising that he's watching his own marriage crumble around him. Loretta Young is devoted, moist-eyed, and basically a great date for the tempted Dudley. They drink in the afternoon, go skating at night, and make impulse buys. The skating sequence beats mightily on one's suspension of disbelief, but the rest of the film is an absolute joy. Grant is suave, worldly, and enchanting. A wonderful present for anyone who has not seen it. --Keith Simanton

But the powerful and handsome angel sent from above has a mind of his own and teaching mortal Henry an immortal lesson inromance isn't all he's got planned! Starring Oscar(r) winners* Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven, and featuring "a stellar supporting cast" (The Hollywood Reporter) that includes James Gleason and Monty Woolley, this delightful romantic comedy is wondrous, witty andtruly divine! *Grant, Honorary Oscar (1969); Young, Actress, The Farmer's Daughter (1947); Niven, Actor, Separate Tables (1958)
Customer Reviews:
The Bishop's Wife.......2007-06-25
Nominated for Best Film at the 1947 Oscars, Henry Koster's sweet, thoroughly charming "Bishop's Wife" was a big crowd-pleaser in its day, and has since become one of our more cherished holiday films. Cary Grant was never smoother playing Dudley, the most debonair of angels. Co-starring David Niven and a dazzling Loretta Young as the title character, this joyful, witty film still has something to say about keeping the spirit of Christmas alive all year round.
Touched by an Angel - A Heart Warming Story .......2007-06-05
If you are looking for a movie to watch on Christmas day with your family, you must include this heart warming story about an angel who intervene the busy lives of an Episcopalian bishop named Henry Brougham (David Niven) and his wife Julia (Loretta Young). This movie is set in Yuletide spirit with bells ringing, choir singing, Christmas wreaths decorating the walls of churches, homes, shops and buildings, and streets and neighborhoods covered with fresh snow. During this time, an angel named Dudley (Cary Grant) enters the lives of the bishop and his wife as an office assistant. At the Victorian home of Bishop Henry not everything is going well. Years of neglect about his own family left Julia on her own while the bishop is busy raising funds for a new cathedral. Dudley's attentiveness, charm, and sheer magical powers drive Julia to him, but Dudley is only interested in helping Henry to get back with Julia. The writers have cleverly crafted many moments between Dudley and Julia that would be purely romantic, but writers did not forget to remind us that Dudley is an angel and he is not romancing Julia. Several instances of walking down the street, driving in the country and having lunch at local cafeteria makes her feel that she is appreciated as a woman. The magical ice-skating scene where Dudley charms everyone with his skating ability, and helps Julia to glide on ice is a memorable scene of the movie.
Dudley's "angelic" effect is felt by many: He touches the lives of people he comes in contact with. As the friendship between Julia and Dudley becomes strong, Henry begins to feel that Dudley is a devil trying to steal his wife, but soon all ends well when Dudley completes his job by helping Henry to raise money for the cathedral. Cary Grant is spectacular and charms not only Julia but many viewers. I was most impressed by the performance of Julia who is attracted to Dudley; she is tender, romantic, and vulnerable, yet she also knows that she is a wife and a mother.
Did you see an Angel?.......2007-03-19
When movies didn't have to be edited. This is a classic Christmas movie, good family movie. I don't want to give it away. You'll just have to see it.
An under appreciated classic.......2007-02-05
This is without doubt one of the finest Christmas flicks ever made. Cary Grant just does Cary Grant sooooo Well. I highly recommend this movie once you have watched Grinch and Elve too many times...this will help you get back into the true holiday spirit.
Best Christmas movie !!!!!!.......2007-02-04

This episod is very cute as they showing Joe and Steve when they were little. My 2 little boys love to watch and pretending like them.
Older brother and baby brother they are gather and hug each other...they just love to watch this episod over and over!
entertaining, educational, great.......2007-02-09
My daughter (almost 4) just loves all the Blue's Clue's stories. And I as a mom don't feel too bad to sit my kids (my son is 21 months old) in front of the TV while I am cooking. Kids can really learn a lot from Blue's Clues and my daughter even responds to Steve or Joe when they ask something. The length of the episodes is just the right one as well.
Terrific.......2007-01-13
This DVD is really nice for explaining all the holidays. Keeps it simple and fun. The bonus episodes are good too. Some of these aren't shown often at all.
Blues Review.......2007-01-10
My 2-year old grandson loves Blue's Clues dvd's. So, I bought two of them for his stocking stuffers. He loves them and watches them every afternoon while he scoots around the house. I found the service at Amazon great, and I thank you.

very appealing stories, plus bonus episodes with steve.......2003-11-03
For my now three year old, when Steve went away he was so sad that he didn't really take to Joe. He had mostly watched re runs on noggin. And for nearly a year now, he did not like to watch Blue's clues, because he know Steve has gone away or will leave. But after watching this episode, he was so excited to see Joe as a baby, and Steve as a young boy -- exactly the age group that appeals to 3 to 4 year olds, and he watched with a 4 yr old friend, and both absolutely loved it. And, to my relief, its brought back his love of blue. And he is so thrilled to see those bonus episodes -- "Steve is all grown up now! He's a big boy!" that it has brought the concept of growing home to him like nothing else.
The cover episode is a lovely story line about how Blue puppy comes to join Steve. We buy all of these for the bonus Steve episodes which we already own on VHS :-) Wish they would just go ahead and put the episodes on the Main Menu, instead of one level of "Bonus" indirection. Anyway, Joe or Steve, Blue's Clue's is so educational and appealing, its absolutely not to miss. This one has the Blue's Big Holiday VHS episodes as bonus.

Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny - a classic!.......2007-04-02
I first saw this video(DVD) at our church's Christmas Day program (a Lutheran church). This video was used as a kick-off to the service. Everyone (kids, husband, myself) loved it. The music was catchy, the story line - engaging, the use of rhyme to tell the story - brilliant. The animation is in a class all its own. Probably best of all, it was so positive, upbeat, joyous and at times even humorous. It was so nice to view a video that actually is about the true meaning and celebration of Christmas. I loved it so much, I searched to purchase our own copy, a copy for friends, and one for the children's religous education program (a Catholic program). The director of CCD sent me a very gushing thank you saying it was awesome and just what they need for their program since so many videos of this sort are lacking. Honestly, of all the DVDs you buy and waste your money on throughout the year, this one is worth every penny.
A wonderful new Christmas story.......2007-01-22
The whole family will love this. It's great to hear Andy's voice!
the very first noelwith andy griffith.......2007-01-12
This was a wonderful Christmas dvd for a child 3-6 or so.The music is awesome and we had fun singing it! I will say that you have to get the version with Andy Grffith narrating . Get this early so you can use it during the whole Christ-mas season so the children will know the real meaning of Christ-mas. Happy New Year P.E.
Perfect for your preschooler.......2007-01-11
We try to limit TV and videos, and we want good quality videos with strong Christian values and morals. This one is terrific! It is highly engaging for everyone (we parents love watching it, too!), not too fast-paced, very pleasant to listen to. Andy Griffith voices the narrator (one of the 3 wise men) and does a terrific job. When our 3YO hears certain Christmas carols, he always says, "That's from the Very First Noel!", even though the songs are done in their own way on the video. If you want a great video of the real Christmas story, this is it!
Best Christmas animation I've seen!.......2007-01-11
By chance I caught this on Direct TV and it was so, so good. It follows the Bible closely, with great animation and details and twist of humour. My 2 kids (5 and 3) each have their favourite characters. We've watched it twice together and I'd definitely buy the DVD for keeps soon. The way Christmas carols have been worked into the story is really cute.

Only 10 Days were worth the movie.......2007-01-10
I returned this movie. Being a Christmas movie fan, I could see no need to retain this in my home. The main reason - the producers found it necessary to include in one of the Christmas Eve's a portion of the main character being extremely self-absorbed -- he buys everything he wants, treats people anyway he wants -- which OK is what self-absorbed people do, however, I didn't need the scene where he has self-fulfilling sex with his girlfriend. The whole bed scene could have been eliminated, even if the producers alluded to it.
At best, the acting was B-rated.
SCROOGE MEETS GROUNDHOG DAY.......2006-11-27
Coming up with new ideas for Christmas movies must be a hard task for movie producers. This charming little holiday nugget combines the reliving the same day elements from GROUNDHOG DAY with the perennial tale of Ebenezer Scrooge as a man given a chance to make his life correct.
In this version, Steven Weber is quite good as Clarence Klein, a corporate exec who opts to spend Christmas Eve courting the head of a South American company interested in his stores, The Buck Stops Here. Patricia Valesquez is charming in this role and adds some love interest (?) as well. After a succesful day with Velasquez, while missing his son's Christmas concert and using a reservation for a fancy restaurant from his current squeeze, Klein is killed when the huge pointing finger logo sign crushes him. He ends up in the hands of angel/Angie Molly Shannon who informs him he has 12 chances to make things right.
Weber tries everything from working in a soup kitchen to giving away 1.2 million dollars to try and earn a new chance but of course it takes him the full twelve days and eleven more deaths to see the light.
Weber's charming performance and Shannon's acerbic turn spark the movie and make it a delightful holiday movie.
Not what I expected.......2006-11-08
I watched this movie expecting to be bored as I have been by other movies where the same day played over and over. I was surprised that this movie didn't bore me, but instead left me anxious to see what would happen next. The guy, played by Steven Weber, thinks he has just experienced this best Christmas Eve of his life because of a great business deal. He has 12 chances to realize what a "best Christmas" really is, and he must figure it out for himself with no hints from his nurse/angel, or it will actually be his last Christmas Eve.
Sometimes you find a diamond.......2005-12-14
This was a wonderful movie. Not only was it heartwarming but it illustrated a gospel point better than any other movie I have ever seen. Jesus said "You must lose your life to save it." and this is the lesson Calvin learns. When he stops trying to manipulate the situation and just does what is right (another gospel point), he abandons himself to just enjoying the time he has with his family. Noboby ever lies on their death bed and says "gee I wish I had taken my family business public!" or "nice family, but I'm really bummed about that business failing 30 years back." Watch this movie and get your priorities straight.
Cute.......2005-12-05
A cute modernized "remake" (or rip-off) of ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE.
Weber makes the film.
Of course he really wasn't such a bad guy to start with which throws the story a little out of whack... heck, he saved the family business from Chapter 11 and made it a success so the whole family is now financially secure.... cut the guy some slack!!
We watched this the same day as the Pitt/Jolie movie MR AND MRS SMITH and actually enjoyed this one a bit more.

Wonderful!.......2007-01-09
A good DVD for all to view. We need more DVD's about what Christmas is all about.
Finally great content and talent!.......2000-12-23
Not only is the clay animation amazing, the script is true to the Scriptures without the unnecessary embelishments. The voice-work, sound, lighting and clamation combine for an excellent telling of the story of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Outstanding Family Fare!.......2000-10-24
This terrific version of the Christmas story is beautifullytold. The use of clay animation makes it particularly interesting. My 7 year old son enjoys watching it again and again with his 69 yearold grandmother. The First Christmas truly helps the whole familyappreciate the true meaning of the holiday. END

This "movie" is actually a 2000 holiday special. With Christmas and entrance exams approaching, the Hinata Apartments are in a typical uproar. The gang decide the popular superstition "if you declare your love for someone on Christmas Eve, your wish will come true" should apply to Naru and Keitaro, who are trying to study. They assist the pair--and succeed in making pests of themselves. Of course, everything ends happily, despite Keitaro's sprained ankle and a long series of comic mishaps and misunderstandings. The disc also includes a new episode of Love Hina in which champion swordswoman Motoko must redeem herself in the eyes of her older sister to remain the heir to the Shinmei School. Christmas cheer notwithstanding, nothing's changed at the Hinata Apartments. An excellent gift for fans of this popular romantic comedy. A solid anime adaptation of a great manga.......2006-03-17
Love Hina. An anime based on the manga series by Ken Akamatsu.
INTRODUCTION:
In recent times, I was introduced to the Love Hina manga - and I fell in love with it instantly. Ken Akamatsu's romantic comedy series quickly became one of my favorite mangas. It had all the right elements to keep things interesting - interesting characters that were numerous, cool storylines, a ton of comic relief - pretty much everything I could ever want in a manga series. Naturally, like with most manga series, Love Hina was turned into an anime. And as with any manga/anime conversion, there were some changes. Just the same, though, how did the anime work out? Read on for my review and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Essentially, this is the manga to anime adaptation of Love Hina. The anime version of the series consisted of twenty-five half-hour episodes, as well as several specials that followed.
STORYLINE:
The storyline behind the Love Hina anime is essentially the same as the Anime, despite some differences. It follows the life of Keitaro Urashima, a guy in his late teens/early twenties who is so pathetic, you can't help but feel sorry for him. He's failed the college entrance exams numerous time, and been exiled from his home. Not to mention the fact that he has no talents whatsoever. To study for his next attempt at the exams, he takes shelter at the Hinata House, an old hotel owned by his grandmother. But once he arrives, he gets a rather rough welcome. It has been converted to a girls dormitory - and the residents aren't at all thrilled that he has showed up. Fate takes a rather odd twist, though - his grandmother (who is out wandering the world) makes him manager of the house. But with girls who like him half the time and hate him half the time, he's really no better off than before. The girls include a sweet, smart girl with an occasional mean streak, who Keitaro suspects may be the girl he made a promise with as a child, a shy and often depressed middle school girl with a talent for cooking, a mysterious foreign middle-school aged girl with tons of energy, a man-hating sword master, and a freelance writer who is always either drinking too much or blowing her money betting on horse races. With such diverse personalities and entertaining storylines, it's a series that will keep you coming back and wanting more.
REVIEW (SERIES):
Overall, I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of Love Hina, but I still feel the manga version is far superior. The manga has scenes the anime doesn't and vice versa, but most of the anime-only scenes/episodes are fillers. As such, people who only watch the anime but don't read the manga are going to miss out on some major storyline elements. Likewise, the anime is less graphic than the manga, probably due to television content restrictions and such. I strongly recommend checking out the Love Hina series, but keep in mind - watching the anime is no substitute for reading the manga in its entirety!
REVIEW (DVD):
There are two different versions of the series that have been released on DVD in the states. One version features discs sold separately for roughly twenty-five dollars, which include four episodes and bonus material. The other versions contain eight episodes per disc, are sold only as a "complete series" set (to my knowledge), and the only bonus features are trailers for other animes. Since it's cheaper, I recommend the latter set. However, it's also tougher to find, so be warned (try eBay.) Both versions feature the uncut subtitled version, the way the series was meant to be enjoyed. The dub cast is hit and miss (why the hell did they give Kitsune a southern belle voice!?), so thank the maker for the original Japanese audio track.
OVERALL:
In the end I am very satisfied with the anime adaptation of this series. No, it doesn't surpass its manga counterpart (animes really do), but it's still a great series. If you want a good anime that will give you romantic elements and comic relief galore, you'll get them both here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! But don't forget to read the manga too!
EDITION NOTES:
The four-episode DVDs of the series, and the "perfect collection" box remain readily available in most stores with an extensive anime collection. Sadly, these items are a rip-off pricewise (twenty-five bucks for four episodes doesn't satisfy me.) Take my advice - go online and hunt down the cheaper, complete series set.
Christmas Special = Good! Episode 25= Good!.......2005-08-26
The christmas special is good as a side story that doesn't really take place but follows the theme of the story exectly. As for the 25 episode it is the continuation of the story. But for some reason the creators of the anime did not make all of the episonds according to the Magna that they took it from so if you want to know the whole story i suggest that you read the Magna after Vol. 12.
Christmas Special = Good! Episode 25= Bad!.......2004-06-21
For those of you wondering, yes, the Christmas Special is definentley worth the money for the DVD. I won't spoil anything, but take my word for it.
Episode 25...
Episode 25 is BY FAR the worst episode they could (and did!) make. It's TOTALLY out of whack with the rest of the story that's developed so far. Naru and Mei go to visit their family's grave (And Keitaro doesn't come for comfort? I doubt someone like Naru would really allow that), so that knocks her out of the story, and leaves room for Motoko's sister to show up and be quite the opposite of what my impression of her was for someone Motoko looked up to so much. Going against what I thought she would've stood for, she tells Motoko she has no chance of inheriting the school. So Motoko tries to become a normal woman, and little romantic tension develops between her and Keitaro.
THIS EPISODE HAS NO PLACE IN THE SERIES. IT'S COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY UNWORTHY OF THE LOVE HINA NAME. They AT LEAST could've put the episode somewhere else, it makes no sense where it is. Keitaro and Narusegawa have come so close to eachother, and all of the sudden this? It's preposterous.
This episode reminded me more of a pitiful sitcom than what Love Hina is (which is an excellent sitcom without the obnoxious audience, and pockets of an underlying serious romantic plot).
The Christmas Special was excellent, though.
WATCH THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL, DON'T WATCH EPISODE 25.
great movie.... but.......2004-03-12
I would have to say this is a great movie, especially while rolling except I just have one problem with it. Why is Shinobu treated like a dog? The only reason Keitaro goes out with her is to make the other girl jealous. And then, when Shinobu asks if she is a terrible person (presumably because she fell in love and had a dream), she is told "You're a good kid." A kid? A kid who can only have crushes that fade away (not real love, truly). And Shinobu is left to be content with being alone.... or is she? The writer tacks on a false happy ending for her, by letting her pass out books and accept money (which is supposed to make her VERY happy). But I don't buy it. After, the greatest disappointment of her life, is she supposed to be satisfied with this? How sad. Nobody thinks of the other person who gets hurt. But otherwise this movie was very sweet and realistic (realistic because just like in life, everyone gets a happy ending).

Description
This humorous and modern retelling of the classic tale is sure to delight everyone time and again! This is the tale of a very loveable donkey named Abib. Abib was the only animal left capable of carrying Mary to Bethlehem. Helped by his friends, Jaffar the Camel and Orion the Horse, he bravely fights off the King's soldiers and follows the star of Bethlehem. English Spanish Bonus feature: Making of Silent Night
Customer Reviews:
Poor language, better for school age kids.......2006-01-18
I bought this for my 3 and 1 year old children. It uses words like stupid, ugly, and dumb (the donkey has a bad attitude in the beginning and after helping Mary, Joseph and Jesus he becomes a good donkey). Now it may be naive of me in today's society, but I do not want my children learning these words from a Christian video about the birth of Christ! If your kids are older and/or already know these words then it is a very cute story (although it could do a better job of reinforcing that name calling can be very hurtful).
Sweet Movie.......2004-12-31
This movie is a sweet depiction of the Birth of Jesus. It is well written and produced.
