Maverick director Michael Winterbottom wondered about the double standard of why novels can have explicit sex scenes and be legit and films could not. So his short film of a relationship based solely on sex and a love for music is the result of that thought. If the definition of a porn film is to shoot actors performing graphic sex scenes for real, then 9 Songs qualifies. It certainly doesn't feel or look like your standard whoopdee-do XXX feature. It's as glossy and low-budget arty as Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People or I Want You. But yeah, Matt and Lisa do everything to each other, and the actors are not "just acting" in some of the sex scenes. No matter how landmark the movie might be, there is not much story here (at least a book with hot sex often has a good story to it). Lisa is an American drifter in London who hooks up with Matt, a scientist who studies glaciers in Antarctica. They have sex and visit nine rock concerts including Franz Ferdinand and The Dandy Warhols. As advertised, you can't find these musical performances anywhere else, but we just see them from way back in the crowd. The film has an essence of how someone can find bliss in another person's body, and the emotional, magical weight that can hold over you. But that spell doesn't last. Since the sex is real, Winterbottom had to cast unknown actors, and they really don't make an impression, especially with the lack of story. --Doug Thomas

Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall - London's Brixton Academy. They are in bed at night's end. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. Featuring nine live concert performances not available anywhere else by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Franz Ferdinand and Michael Nyman. Love and Sex.......2007-06-05

I thought that this film did a great job in depicting modern life, especially that of a young urbanite.

Much has been said in the reviews about the reliance on sex to underline the story and to be honest doesn't sex underpin much of our lives?

I like the fact that the sex is less overt at the start of the film; though it is happening we get only glimpses and teasing rather than a full on show (a likeness to those first exploratory forays with a new lover?), however as the couple relax further into their relationship the sex becomes more selfish and frank. By the final act of the film, as the relationship begins to fail, the sex is at it's most explicit (shown in sun drenched hues, lazy and slow - often the indicator of romance in films), but in this case the realty of boredom and routine.

I enjoyed the film though, like most, I found some of the sex shocking. But it made me think and, it certainly felt like a real place and not some cinematic creation.

I'm not sure there is a lot to say here, especially given the length of 9 Songs. Simply put, it seems that Michael Winterbottom has entered the world of pornography, well at least partially. Here, he has definitely made a very dirty film with little else to say. I'm not saying it offends me. We see Matt, a dude who does some work in Antarctica, meet Lisa, an American student. Their relationship seems to be based predominantly on two things; a common bond with music and a common bond in enjoying sexual intercourse. There is seemingly very little attachment beyond that and then the relationship ends when Lisa returns to the states.

The explicit sex scenes are intertwined with footage of rock bands including the Von Bondies, the Dandy Warhols and Franz Ferdinand, just to name a few. I was tempted to praise the film for combining elements that are pornographic with a compelling story and somehow attempt to not be gratuitous. I don't know whether to call the graphic scenes honest or exploitative, but I suppose they serve some purpose within the context of the story. It definitely seems empty and bleak in their final scene together. 9 Songs portrays sex far uglier and realistic than porn does. Not to say the actions themselves are ugly, it's just the film doesn't function to titillate it's audience.

I'm not sure that means it should qualify as good movie, but it certainly seems like an honest attempt to be original and bring elements like this into mainstream cinema, for better or worse. The performances have been praised by some as daring and I really wish I could say the same were it not for a certain lucrative 18+ industry that employees far more daring performers. Nevertheless, I was convinced the characters were genuine which is really why I won't call this film outright pornography. It's somewhere in-between and I'm not sure we can say that about enough films. It must be noted, while it all seemed very real to me (more real than many mainstream movies in some respects of course) the audience does not get know Lisa and Matt as well as we should have but Winterbottom is likely reflecting a relationship founded on sex and little else. I think I realized that was the film's purpose after another screening.

9 Songs certainly doesn't conquer the world, but it is a film that I found myself talking about quite a bit when it came under my radar. That fact alone gives it more points than perhaps it deserves.

A not too good looking guy meets a really skinny girl at a rock concert. He takes her home and they do it. They see another band, and they do it some more. And so it goes on. And then the girl leaves and the guy resumes his job studying antarctic ice. End of story.
What we see: Medium-core porn that never becomes interesting, let alone exciting. A couple of rock bands that sound pretty much the same and look pretty much the same. Oh, and Michael Nyman playing the piano for an enjoyable minute or three.
What we learn: Rock may not be dead, but it's seriously ill. Porn may not be an artform, but it IS a craft and it DOES require skill and the power to convince - and boy, are these 'actors' and director powerless.

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In Stand by Me he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully vampire who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

If this movie could be rated Higher I would. Its just that great era where movies were just good, I love this movie a whole lot, I believe this movie got me into the whole genre of Vampire Loving. And of course the actors in this movie for a child growing up in that era were also hot. The soundtrack to this movie is off the hook and its a great summer time CD. I highly recommend this movie. It truly is the best movie ever of its time.

The great thing about this dvd is on one side is the 'full screen' version , and the other side is the 'Widescreen' (2:35) version. Its cool when dvds come with both versions!!

Guilty Pleasure.......2007-04-29

Reading these reviews, it's clear that "The Lost Boys" has some irresistable magic going for it; I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theater when it came out. The '80's trappings are at least authentic, as the film was made in 1986 when the splashy colors of Corey Haim's shirts were actually chic (believe it, kiddies, I was there).

But what really makes it work, I think, is the care the writer (or writers) took to get the details of vampire mythology - the "hellhound", the importance of inviting the vampire into the home - right even as they re-shaped it to fit the contemporary setting. The twists all work, and the ending is just brilliant ("..all the damn vampires"). It's a solidly entertaining and engaging horror film, possibly deserving a place in a "top ten" of the genre.

One of the Best Vampires movie if not the BEST!!.......2007-04-16

First of all, im not going to get into the history of who's in it and who isn't. Second, this movie is a DEFINITE! for Vampires fan. Third, Keifer Sutherland at his best, although Coreys are lame together, in this movie they did work together as best as they could. Fourth, the Movie, the plot, the action, and the look of the vampires, are all Cool. This movie is a must *HAVE* especially the 2 Disc Edition. The Fifth reason is just that, the bonus CD is extremely what EVERY "COLLECTOR'S EDITON" should be. This is the a great movie and a great buy any place for the price!

Embittered by his experience working with 20th Century Fox on The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967), and weary of the Poe films for American International Pictures, Roger Corman was in dire need of inspiration for his next production. He found it in Life magazine, which featured a photo of the funeral of Mother Miles, head of the Sacramento, California, Hell's Angels. From this picture came both The Wild Angels and the biker-movie genre itself. Peter Fonda, who replaced George Chakiris, stars as brooding Angels chieftain Heavenly Blues. When his pal Loser (Bruce Dern) is shot by police, Blues attempts to bury him in a small town, but the locals resist, and a brawl ensues. Audiences and critics were alternately appalled and thrilled by the extensive drug use and violence, but beneath Angels' leathery hide beats the heart of a Western, especially in its ruminations on personal freedom. Charles Griffith's script (cowritten by Peter Bogdanovich, who also cameos in the film) helped make Angels the sole U.S. entry for the 1966 Venice Film Festival, which irked the State Department enough to try and revoke the honor. Corman's direction, freed from AIP's period pieces, is lean and exuberantly active, aided by Monte Hellman's editing. The film helped give Fonda the counterculture clout to later make Easy Rider, and boosted the careers of Dern and then-wife Diane Ladd; Nancy Sinatra, however, renounced the picture, fearful of its effect on her image. Mike Curb's score features Davie Allan and the Arrows' fuzz-tone-soaked hit "Blues' Theme." --Paul Gaita

My boys are obsessed! .......2007-05-15

This is the perfect video for small children who are interested in dirt bikes and motorcycles. It tells a story but shows some great footage of kids and adults riding. The music isn't "thrasher" music like you get in the adult videos (very kid friendly and catchy). I love that this video emphasizes safety when riding. My boys, ages 2.5 and 1.5, ask for this video by name and watch it the entire way through. It's now a staple birthday present for my friends with 2 year old boys!

Great Kid Flick.......2006-12-18

My 4 year old consistently pulls this dvd off the library bookshelves. The whole family enjoys watching it, and we aren't even that into motorcycles, well, except for my 4 year old.
