A thinking person's thriller, Spy Game employs dense plotting without sacrificing the kinetic momentum that is director Tony Scott's trademark. The film has the byzantine scope of a novel, focusing on veteran CIA operative Nathan Muir (Robert Redford), whose protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is scheduled for execution in a Chinese prison. It's Muir's last day before retiring (cliché alert!), and Bishop is being deliberately sacrificed by oily CIA officials to ensure healthy trade with China. Muir has 24 hours to rescue Bishop and his perfunctory love interest (Catherine McCormack), and Spy Game connects the mentor's end-run strategy to flashbacks of his student's exploits in Berlin, Beirut, and beyond. Ambitious but emotionally bland--and not as exciting as Scott's Enemy of the State--Spy Game offers pass-the-torch humor between leather-faced Redford and pretty boy Pitt, and although their dialogue is occasionally limp, the movie compensates with efficient style and substance. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Operation Dinner Out!.......2007-07-02

Phenomenally well done spy/suspense film which keeps you captivated the entire film as to what is going on, where the movie is going, and how all the pieces are going to fit together in the end.

You have Robert Redford, playing a veteran field operative for the CIA named Nathan Muir, whom has one last day of work for the bureau before he retires. He's tipped off by outside sources that something has gone wrong with his protoge Tom Bishop, played by Brad Pitt, whom is a another CIA field operative whom has been recruited and trained by Nathan Muir. Muir arrives at work on his last day of work to figure out what exactly is going on.

During the next 24 hours, Nathan Muir pieces together that Tom Bishop has be captured by the Chinese for espionage and will be executed within 24 hours if the USA doesn't claim him. The upper tier of management at the CIA isn't going to claim/rescue Tom Bishop. Instead, letting him be executed by the Chinese because the U.S. President is about to visit China the following week regarding future trade between the U.S. & China.... It is the CIA's take that claiming Bishop will look badly on the US and ruin any future trade with China. To make matters worse, Bishop wasn't on any official assignment to China on behalf of the CIA and the US has no idea why he has broken into a Chinese Prison.... So the real question being asked is by the CIA: Is Tom Bishop a rogue agent OR not?

Throughout the rest of the movie we see Nathan Muir using his skills as a field operative within the CIA's headquarters to find out what is going on with Tom Bishop. During this time, we find out how Nathan Muir & Tom Bishop became acquainted and the nature of their relationship, what kind of man each is, through the course of flashbacks that Muir's character relates to a group of upper management whom want to know more about Bishop's character. Muir only tells them as much as they need to know as he plans to rescue Bishop from China before the 24 hour time period once he finds out from upper management where Tom Bishop is being held.

The twists and turns throughout this movie show us how Nathan Muir rescues Tom Bishop and what/why Tom Bishop was doing in China in the first place. It is one fantastic movie that is great to watch every time!

Good movie to have and stay with, both main actors are a real classic, will make for a good collection addition.

4 out of 5 stars mind-twisted movie with sexiest actors of two generations.......2007-01-27

What a great mind twisting movie. While Robert Redford and Brad Pitt's characters run the gamut of teacher-student to friends to former friends they still understand what each other is all about. As the movie moves into its final stages and the cloak and dagger picks up it becomes even more engrossing. This is a move, somewhat, in the vein of "Sneaker" with the little, individual agent, running against the grain of the agency.

A very good movie, recommended to anyone who likes the double cross, triple cross type surprise or the little man outsmarting the big arrogant man.

4 out of 5 stars A must-own for any Tony Scott fan.......2006-11-24

Ridley's younger brother has created his own brand of of action movie (Enemy of the State, Man on Fire). Thanks to Scott's distinctive cinematography, pacing, music and production values, Spy Games succeeds despite the mildly self-conscious performances of the leads, Redford and Pitt. In Spy Game, Scott does his typically masterful job creating a sense of place recreating Viet Nam, Cold War Berlin and the Middle East in the early 1980's. His attention to small details and the choice of supporting actors make repeated viewings a pleasure.

This movie is not for the avid Blood Rayn game playing fan this movie has nothing to do as far as plot and story line goes considering the vidio game, However this peticular Eddition comes with the sequal computer Game to the first Blood Rayn Vidio Game and the Game Rates 5 Stars if you can deal with haveing to remember all the key command or buying the game play computer Controller. the game has excellent graphics. If you however have not plade the game then prepair yourself for good acting and greate Leading Charicter with all the Gore you can handle but what it has in gore it lacks in plot.

1 out of 5 stars eeek!.......2007-05-07

What a joke. I guess few of the "stars" decided over a dubie to make this movie. And probably filmed it during the weekend. Hilarious action scenes. Oh, they also used tons of make up just for the sake of gore. Skip it and save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Horrid.......2007-04-16

Ok, quickly and without hesitation, click the `Back' button on your web browser as many times as it takes to get completely get away from seeing anything that has to do with this movie.

If you didn't heed my advice above, then you are obviously into watching train wrecks, ten car pileups and little kids frying ants with their magnifying glass. In other words, you're a cinematic sadist. If you've already seen this movie, then you've probably lost some self esteem. If you plan on seeing it after you read this review...you're just a masochist.

Bloodrayne is horrible. Beyond horrible. Ben Kingsley has made some bad career choices in his day but this one takes the cake. Michael Madsen, who used to be considered respectable if not great, is heading down the career failing slope faster than a California mudslide after a monsoon. Michelle Rodriguez, who has openly stated she wants to be a gypsy actress, a free spirit, is the most unscathed simply because you're going to limit yourself with that kind of career decision. That doesn't get her off the hook for this travesty. I can't imagine anyone as rebellious as her standing quietly while this heap of crud was being dumped around her like garbage at a landfill. And then there's Kristana Loken...well, you get to see her nude. That's about the highlight of her role. And what the hell is Meatloaf doing in this movie...and credited by his FULL name?! He picked this atrocity to decide he wants to be credited with TWO names instead of ONE? HUH?!

Everyone else is unknown, which surprisingly doesn't leave many roles left for the unknowns. It was amazing how they amassed this group of named actors for something so horribly bad. It's not just the actors, it's the dialogue, the F/X and the even the plot...which escapes me for the moment. I guess I'm trying to remove this movie from my memory. So do yourself a favor and stay away, stay far, far away. Trust me, it's for your own good.

3 out of 5 stars Just as well they included the game.......2007-04-13

So many bad reviews and so much adverse comment as to the skills of Uwe Boll, was it deserved ? I'm afraid the answer is largely yes, this film is patchy in the extreme, truly laden with clichés and in common with most game derived movies seems to have been written by somebody with only a passing knowledge of the game. Which is pretty silly as BloodRayne the game doesn't exactly have the most complex plot ever seen. For example in the game Rayne a Dhampir is searching for her father, the setting is Europe in the nineteen thirties, she is located and hired by the Brimstone society and then goes on a series of missions recovering three artefacts from the Thule Society.
For reasons that remain unexplained the film decided to run as a prequel and being scripted as a predictable cliché is set in that mythical eastern Europe beloved of Hammer and all the old Dracula movies. There Rayne is looking for her father and is found and trained by the Brimstone society, presumably they mutually forget each other and the later game setting meeting is an amnesiacs reunion. In common with the game Rayne searches for the artefacts of Beliar, though these would appear to be somewhat different to the game versions she searches out later, presumably some kind of generic naming system for supernatural items. If you're going to do a prequel at least make it imaginative, why swipe bits from the game and take them out of context? It's lazy means nothing to non gamers and will only irritate the game fans who are the core audience. Rayne acquires two artefacts and we are told becomes incredibly powerful, though the special effects budget clearly doesn't run to anything that could demonstrate this. She then gets to enter her fathers castle and kill him, another sign of memory loss perhaps as having exterminated dear old dad, one wonders why she spends the next century or so looking for him, or how he crops up in the game BloodRayne 2. Still not to get bogged down in details, lets look at the film as it stands. As I've already said it's clichéd, oldie worldie eastern European settings and a plot that creaks. A massive and pointless overdose of dismemberment, luridly blood splattered and all very badly done, poorly choreographed and filmed fight scenes, the list goes on. Then we look at the actors, Madsen and Rodriguez are fine in their comfort zone as urban Americans with attitude, take them out of the zone and their limitations are painfully obvious, they just do not fit into this scenario and utter some of the most painfully stilted lines ever committed to film. Kristanna Locken isn't the worlds greatest actor, but at least she tries, which is more than can be said for the Oscar winning Sir Ben Ghandi Kingsley who's performance is so wooden it's teak like, a man who is clearly hating every moment of the shoot, has no idea why he signed the contract and wants everybody to know what a bad time he's having. Instead of dark and brooding, his head vampire just comes over as constipated. It's not a good movie, but given time may acquire a bit of cult cachet as one of those bad movies you need to see.
And yet despite all this I'm not spitting blood at money wasted and that's because the set includes a DVD copy of BloodRayne 2 the game and to be honest that's what I was after in the first place. I think packing the two together is a good idea and one that other game film teams should consider taking up.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...........2007-04-10

I was very disappointed with this movie and it was horribly done. I understand that it is difficult to make a movie based off of a video game and that this movie wasn't widely released but still... it could have been a lot better. The movie had a great cast but unfortunately that wasnt' enough to save it. The action sequences looked staged, wooden in appearance so there wasn't any believability. The acting was overdone and over the top in some scenes and combined with bad accents it just gave the whole movie a cheesy feeling. I am a fan of the video game and a fan of movies but this one just sucked. I felt like I was watching a really bad made for t.v. movie.

5 out of 5 stars War Game / Culloden 40+ years on.......2007-05-13

I first saw these "documentaries" 40+ years ago and was impressed by their power and the logic of their messages. Seeing the programmes now is to lament the demise of powerful, committed and issue dominated documentary film making appearing on our TV screens. The War Game & Culloden haven't lost their ability to shock and stimulate debate.
Culloden, with its Vietnam war sub-text, carries, now, a message about decisions to declare war in Iraq while the War Game reminds us that policies of MAD & WMD are based on faulty logic.
This DVD is worth many viewings.

5 out of 5 stars More effective than even "Threads" in some ways.......2007-03-02

"The War Game" is a surprisingly effective documentary, especially for the time that it was released. I felt that it was actually more haunting than "Threads", due to its colder atmosphere of hard facts and ebony and ivory images of charred bodies and demolished edifices. I often found "Threads" to actually be somewhat of a disappointment, especially with the initial attack scenes and cinematography that REALLY looks dated--especially for a movie that was made in--1984?!?! (Looking more like it was made in the early 70's in many spots). "The War Game", I felt, did a better job at hitting you with both fists--especially without any element of a "standard British kitchen sink drama" that "Threads" contained. Don't get me wrong, I still feel "Threads" is a good film, but one that could have been better, especially in light of how brutally honest "The War Game" was with its theme. Overall, I will always feel that when it comes to nuke films, "The Day After", does it best, due to its extremely chilling atmosphere and convincing performances. Also, contrary to what people have said, "The Day After" is NOT a soap opera with nukes, nor is it "Mister Roger's Neighborhood" as some reviewers of "Threads" have mentioned, but a HIGHLY effective thriller and a bona fide wake-up call. In conclusion, for me "The Day After" is the best, but second in line is "The War Game" with its bona fide chilling effectiveness. Definitely worth a viewing.

a double bill of films made for bbc-tv, i had seen both of these some thirty years back and never got over them. the earlier of them, "culloden" is a recreation of the events leading up to and following the 1746 battle that spelled the final end of scotlands days as a seperate country from england. adapted from the classic book by john prebble (incidentally, the rabbits favorite book), the film is a brilliant reflection on the conflicts among the idiotic bonnie prince charlie and his advisors, the ruthless english army, and the average scottish soldieer caught in the crossfire. filmed on a minimal budget (they had ONE cannon!), the battle scenes are so creative that you will believe youre part of it. this was the old walter cronkite "you are there" concept taken to the heights of art. now as to "the war game" -- well, once watkins had a major surprise hit on his hands with "culloden", he got to make "war games". akin to the similar path of patrick mcgoohan a few years later, who followed up the overwhelming success of "secret agent" with the artistically brilliant but controversial "the prisoner", watkins shot his wad with "WG", and never recovered. this fantasy about an english town in the days leading up to and following a nuclear attack is far more frightening than any of the myriad of other films which have used the same conceit. its matter-of-factness and use of ordinary people in lieu of actors works in watkins's hands in a manner that would have been artsy in the hands of another director. the finished product proved so controversial that the bbc declined to air it, and the movie was ultimately released in theaters, where ironically it won an oscar as best documentary. as i said previously, i saw both films on television in the 70s -- back when pbs still carried out its mandate to air quality television, rather than wayne dyer infomercials or doo-wop retrospectives. i cant more heartily recommend a dvd to watch than this.

4 out of 5 stars Too intense in its own time for tv........2006-10-27

Remember that in 1965 we were in an intense cold war with the Soviet Union. It seems quaint now but is shot as a news story with immediancy to it. The documentary feel gives it life. We lived with the possibility of nuclear annilation always in the back of our collective minds. This film gives short shrift to Her Majesty's government's lack of preparation or the ignorance of the people affected by a nuclear attack on Britain. England is a small country & one wonders how indeed we would react in the U.S. to a nuclear attack with all our wide open spaces, places to escape to. This movie gives the Soviets the benefit of moral relativism. Maybe U.S. foreign policy is responsible for this attack. It was totally devoid of references to God by the victims which is unrrealistic but still refreshing. It's documentary feel made it seem like it could happen this way. The interviews with victims & government representative was effective & I suspect much more so 42 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Riveting.......2006-10-03

The War Game is one of the best films about Nuclear War.I first saw a snippet of this on the documentary Cold War and own the VHS copy. In general, these types of stories typically have 3 basic parts: pre-attack, the attack and post attack. Of the movies made in this genre, The War Game is the strongest in dramatizing all 3 parts. What helps the War Game along is that we do not get attached to any one character (my version is only 50 minutes long) like you do in the rest of the movies in this genre. When you attempt to follow the fate of one character or a group of people, you can lose the larger societal implications of nuclear war effects.

Some contrasts: First, there are 2 other major movies that are part of this genre called Threads and The Day After. Threads was a British movie. The Day After was its American counterpart. Both are decent stories but I would give Threads some advantage here.

1) Threads does the best job with showing pre-attack and attack conditions starting from the basic bliss of most people to the terrifying attack.

2) The movie the Day After shows a good deal of the pre-attack and post attack conditions but it gets carried away with the attack situation. Its characters are very shallow and detract from an otherwise well-told story.

One of The War Game's flaws is its obvious scoffs at religion. Many of the quotes seem to suggest that American ministers are backward and stupid for making suggestions like not giving shelter space to the passing stranger. What a modern viewer may not understand is how close the US and the USSR came to nuclear annihilation during this time frame and how practical this advice really was.

The War Game's other obvious flaw is its creating moral relativism with the Soviets. The movie portrays the fact that the US and its NATO allies may have been the first to use nuclear weapons in a battle over the Fulda Gap in Germany (a likely hotspot). What the story does not explain is how the Soviets had such a large and menacing conventional presence in Eastern Europe (and the Western Europe's inability or lack of desire to take on its own defense) caused this to become part of our policy. The War Game also fails to explain how the Soviet sub fleet went from being a coastal defence force to an offensive force in rapid order with reactors and weapon systems extremely prone to accident (as evidenced by the greater number of subs lost in the Soviet fleet than in the American fleet). These factors did a great deal to de-stabilize Western Europe for some time.

1 out of 5 stars good moive , terrible picture quality.......2007-03-01

A very god movie as far as content, but terrible picture quality as far as it being high def. I would have to say don't waste your $$ on the HD-DVD version and just by the regular DVD, they both have the same picture quality.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Guys.......2007-02-15

5 out of 5 stars The "Death and the Maiden" of this year.......2005-08-14

Since Polansky's "Death and the Maiden" I had not felt like this. This psychological thriller goes far beyond the subject of the Holocaust, human power and abuse; Fantastic WAR movie. Unlike regular movies these days I didn't go away feeling empty and void of any possible thoughts. It kept me fixed to the screen throughout the entire screening until the end: agressive, suggestive, unexpected, witt, surprising... BRAVO to the scriptwriter, the director and the actors!

Tigers are running amok in the jungles of Damang, disrupting Allied communications and killing local natives. Frank (Bring `Em Back Alive) Buck is called in to rescue the situation.
On his arrival at the MacCardle Rubber Plantation Buck discovers the natives chanting about `chindags' - evil humans who assume the form wild animals, in this case tigers. After a little investigation Buck concludes "The japs, or the `monkey people,' as they call `em, have possessed the souls of the tigers."
TIGER FANGS was directed by Sam Newfield, who is probably most famous for THE TERROR OF TINY TOWN (1938), a western with an all-midget cast. Apparently he worked pretty fast; TIGER FANGS is one of sixteen movies he directed in 1943. Frank Buck is a credible actor, although it had to be because of his fame as a animal collector that he's in this one. Another kinda recognizable face is that of Duncan Renaldo, who played the Cisco Kid in movies and on television in the late `40s and early `50s.
TIGER FANGS is an entertaining little movie with the good guys triumphant in the end. Buck had a reputation for treating his animals humanely, so parents won't have to worry about scenes of animal abuse or mistreatment. There are some racists attitudes, like the above quote, that might make this one unsuitable for children in some households.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars if you like chess and 2.5 if you don't..........2006-11-24

The only reason I like this movie a lot is b/c I love chess. If I didn't, then I would have been thoroughly bored. If you want to know about the movie, just read the synopsis at the top of this page! A 2.5 warrants a..."I'm making a big mistake on renting this, but heh, I'm desperate" type of scenario. If you are a chess fan, you will notice that at one point in the movie, Fromm (the chess challenger) finds a great line to play against the champion while he is analyzing chess positions in the swimming pool. The only problem is if you look closely, he actually has the board sideways, meaning he has the dark square in the bottom-right corner rather than the white making all his "great lines" not so great!

4 out of 5 stars gosh i miss cold war movies; arabs are so boring ..........2006-08-03

a taut cold war test of wills centered around a world championship chess match between an apolitical soviet grand master and his mentally unbalanced onetime student who has now defected to the west. as fascinating as a movie about chess can be.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping psychological thriller.......2005-08-15

Set in Geneva at the World Chess Championships, the Soviet world champ vs. the free west challenger. What the two opponents imagine and hope to be a personal grudge match turns out to be a politically maneuvered competition. The KGB will go to any extreme to see its player win, but it can't do anything about his ill health (though it tries), and the challenger is awarded the prize when the Russian has to withdraw. A taut, psychological thriller made even more bitter by the fact that no matter how competetive the two players are (VERY competetive) they are mere pawns of political maneuverings. Won an Oscar for best foreign film (Swiss). Worth a watch.

3 out of 5 stars SMART COLD WAR SPY GAMES.......2003-07-29

The full metaphorical symbolism of an international chess tournament played against cold war intrigue is perfectly realized in DANGEROUS MOVES (Home Vision Entertainment). Winner of 1985's Best Foreign Film Oscar©, the authentic tension in this nifty, nuanced thriller builds to a unexpected and satisfying climax. The less said here the better. The cast includes Liv Ullmann, Leslie Caron and Michel Piccoli. Extras include a conversation with producer Arthur Cohn. Recommended.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Desperately disappointing.......2006-09-10

War Game is a desperately disappointing animated adaptation of Michael Foreman's excellent children's picture book about the Christmas Truce of 1914. Unfortunately, in the hands of the Snowman team it's all just too nice and safe for the respite to have any power, and the loss of the haunting ending from the book (where the hero's body slowly vanishes under falling snow) in favour of something less upsetting to the kiddies renders it all even more so what: only the beautiful yet quietly devastating closing lines of narration truly work. Terrible performances from many of the voice cast, too. At least at 29 minutes it's brief.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little story.......2004-10-27

This film was made in 2001 but never released to the general public until now. Kate Winslet fans will enjoy this, as she is simply brilliant in animated movies - she has such a lovely voice. Get this on DVD if you see it at a good price!
