Scenes of Gerda's search--through the lush temptations of each season personified--are interspersed with downright creepy scenes of Kai held prisoner in the Snow Queen's ice palace. Keen acting and smart direction engross the viewer, but those under 8 years old might not be ready for the repetitive themes of seduction and temptation. --Liane Thomas

... than have to watch this movie again. It just kept going on and on and on and on and on, like winter in Siberia, with no point. At the end, I didn't care whether or not Gerda ever found Kai -- I was frozen with boredom.

Upon receipt of this dvd I was disappointed to find that it is unplayable outside of The USA and Canada Furthermore there are no versions obtainable from any source, that are compatable with European formats.I am pleased to report that Amazon resolved the problem with the minimum of fuss.

I bought this movie for my daughter for Christmas and she absolutely loves it. She's watched it numerous times already and she's had it less than a month!

I would recommend this movie to anyone that likes fairytales.

Boring, like watching snow melt..........2006-10-12

The Snow Queen is an ancient story from Northern Europe about a beautiful lady with a heart of ice who resides near the North Pole, and uses winter to take the lives of innocent human beings, and uses her beauty and charm to seduce innocent men. Live action movies and cartoon versions of this story have been made in numerous decades in multiple languages. One of the later ones is this 3 hour version by Hallmark Entertainment. Taking place somewhere in Scandinavia; most likely Denmark, the setting is a small rural village in the mid 20th century. A father loses his wife to winter, and raises his daughter at their hotel. One day, he hires Kai, a young man, to help with labor around the hotel. He and the daughter fall in love, but the Snow Queen steals Kai away. The daughter sets forth on a journey across earth and the four seasons to find the lair of the Snow Queen to rescue Kai.

The movie's story is quite good and offers much promise. But the movie drags too much; the dialogue is often muted, and the Snow Queen is somewhat wooden; not enough emotion. The idea of a beautiful queen of ice is done much better in the Chronicles of Narnia than here, as Bridget Fonda does not do much talking at all. The idea of the robbed girl having to travel across the spring, summer and autumn to find Kai is quite innovative and only possible by the crew of Hallmark, but again it was not done well. The action scenes were somewhat fake, and most importantly, the snow in the winter scenes clearly looked like fake snow. Overall, a good attempt but a bad result.

I disagree with "Treeseed's" review of this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. Bridget Fonda was perfect as the Snow Queen. She delivered her lines appropriately for the character. Her beautiful profile was made use of many times throughout the film. Pretty scenery and great sound glide this movie along. So go on and enjoy it for what it is - a beautifully-told story with good (although not great) acting. It's for entertainment folks - I think it accomplishes the purpose.

This staggeringly gorgeous interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale The Snow Queen began as a concert of the pretty music by Paul K. Joyce. The story is told in broad strokes: A mother (Juliet Stevenson, Truly Madly Deeply) and her daughter Gerda (teen soprano Sydney White, who's been tearing up the musical stages in England) take in a homeless boy named Kay. When Kay disappears, kidnapped by the vampiric Snow Queen (ancestress to the White Witch of Narnia, no doubt), Gerda sets off in pursuit and comes across helpful ravens, talking flowers, moving statues, and benevolent reindeer in the course of her hero-journey. The wholly digital world created for this film is astonishing; much of it looks like hand-painted Victorian photographs, each image suitable for framing. Ironically, as the story grows more magical, the imagery turns more conventionally "fantastic" (the Snow Queen's arctic lair is a bit like Superman's Fortress of Solitude). But the overall texture of the movie is engagingly stylized, with movement that seems staggered yet graceful, like a silent film. Delightful children's classic.......2006-01-03

I was ecstatic when I received my copy of The Snow Queen. It always seemed to be on TV in the 1980s, and it was a childhood favourite of mine. I must admit I watched the dubbed version; I usually loathe dubbing, but this was the version I watched as a child, and it wouldn't be the same to me without it. However, there is the option of watching with the original Russian dialogue with English subtitles. The transfer is great, and is presented in its original ratio. Cinematography and colours are lush, and the film hits a brilliant chord of childlike fantasy. Love it.

This is not the classic Snow Queen story. .......2004-12-22

I was very disappointed in this production of the Snow Queen. Considering the time it was produced I can see why all religious elements were deleted from the tale. However these are major features of the story as Andersen wrote it and are essential to the very core of its significance and symbolism. The additions made to the story did little to make up for its loss of deeper meaning. I found them rather silly. I would not recommend this DVD to anyone who has read and loved the original Snow Queen in all its simple elegance. Dale Sjogren

The definitive version.......2004-05-25

If you saw this on BBC television in the 1960's you will remember the "Northern Lights" curtaining effect at the snow queens palace and Kai doing an ice puzzle. (You may not remember the lady inkwell, as I think this may have been cut for television - not essential to the story). The transfer is faultless. Buy it now

Great Andersen's story, great movie for kids.......2002-02-06

This movie is one of the best fairy tale movies made for kids in Russia (in 60's, I believe). It is based on a classical story by Andersen. Disney lovers might find this a valuable addition to their collection.

This DVD presents the movie like I never saw it before (previously I saw it only on a black and white TV). The movie is digitally restored. Great colors and 5.1 surround sound. The DVD is made for Image Entertainment by RUSCICO. Russian, English, and French dubbing (Can't comment on the quality of the last two.)

This charming installment of the FAERIE TALE THEATRE series is one of my all-time favourites, based on Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairytale.

Melissa Gilbert and Lance Kerwin play Gerda and Kay, who enter the frozen land of the Snow Queen (played beguilingly by the late Lee Remick) to learn some much-needed lessons about love and friendship.

Along the way, Gerda meets the Lady Of Summer (Lauren Hutton) and the Robber Girl (Linda Manz) who both try to come between Gerda and her search to find Kay.

Narrated wonderfully by Shelley Duvall (who also created and produced the series, even starring in a few of the tales), with brilliant costumes and sets create a bewitching tale of love and friendship.
