It's the bonus features and additions to the DVD that make this worthwhile
PROS:
-Japanese & English soundtracks
-flashcards to teach the kids words in both languages
-hirangana alphabet flashcards for when they get older
-subtitles in english, hiragana & romanji (so I can sing along;)
CONS:
-the puppets are kind of cheap & scary
-the singing could be a lot better

All the songs are standard lullaby's
but some are more popular in Japanese than English (Grandfather's clock),
some are politically incorrect (Ten little Indians),
and a few don't seem to translate well into to Japanese
(they skip a few verses here & there with humming or la la la's)...

Tone-deaf singing & a tune about Grandpa dying..........2007-02-19

I bought two International Babies 101 DVDs, one in Spanish and one in Japanese, and excitedly opened the Japanese version to play for my toddler. Boy, was I surprised...the singing was REALLY off-key and the choice of music very inappropriate! In fact the lyrics to one of the songs is:

"My grandfather's clock was to large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride.
But it stopp'd short, Never to go again,
When the old man died..

Seriously, does anyone what their little one listing to music about Grandpa dying?

I wasn't expecting "Baby Einstein" quality (in fact, my child's favorite DVD is Baby IQ Language's "Learning Chinese and English Together," a very low-tech, but well-done DVD), but this was really bad. I do like the alphabet section, but that's a small portion of the DVD which mostly shows videos wind-up toys and has the out-of-tune singing.

I also puchased the Spanish version of International Babies 101, but have not opened it because I'm afraid it will be as bad as the Japanese version, especially since it has the same song list. I'll be sending this back ASAP.

This gift was a hit at the baby shower. The mother liked it so much she bought a second DVD and plays it in the car for her two girls. They love the songs. I bought the Spanish one for my 2 year old and she loves it.

After living in Kyoto, translating on both coasts and searching the globe for an authentic material with which to teach my child Japanese, I found it. Unlike Bilingual Baby which takes place entirely within American settings, this is the first CD to use hiragana, Japanese nursury rhymes, and wonderful scenes to accompany the lessons. My child asks for this CD a couple of times a day!! Truly they have gone where no one has gone before but where's International Baby 102, 103, etc.?
