Description
With a silver of moonlight a heartful of dreams and songs that turn frowns upside-down, along comes a glorious stage-to-screen production to remind young and old alike that magic is alive and well. Christianne Tisdale, who debuted on Broadway as Belle in 'Beauty and the Beast,' again steps into an enchanted world in the title role of this lavish New York State Theatre Institute production. Adored by her merchant father Paolo (Joel Aroeste), yet mistreated by her selfish stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella remains caring, unspoiled and true - exactly the kind of person the king's son (Sean Frank Sullivan) hopes to someday meet and wed. But how can a lowly scrubgirl ever marry a Prince? The answer lies in teh spells of a lively Godmamma (Lorraine Serabian) and mischievous Godpapa (John Romeo), the chimes of midnight, and the search for the foot that fits a mysterious glass slipper. A Tale of Cinderella sparkles like that slipper - and fits perfectly.

If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary Duff, who fared better in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but manages to salvage her mainstream appeal in a comedy for which "cute" is not necessarily a compliment. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Meet high school student Sam (Hilary Duff), who scrubs floors at a diner, copes with her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and all the while dreams of Princeton (the perfect spot for a would-be princess to find a prince). But maybe she has a Prince Charming already: her anonymous e-mail buddy (Chad Michael Murray), who arranges to meet her at the Halloween dance. Sam panics when Mr. Anonymous turns out to be the coolest guy on campus. Can he love a girl who isn't part of the in crowd? Can fairy tales come true? Sure - but only if Sam stands up for herself and turns her dreams into reality.

An entertaining story for Hillary Duff fans...or not. Purchased as a gift for twin 10 year old girls who enjoyed the movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of The Cinderella.......2007-06-20

I first watched this movie when it came into theatres, and I actually talked my friends into watching this instead of another movie, which was a hit thriller.

The main reason why I chose this over the other movie was not because of the cast members. Though i admit that I admire the beautiful Miss Hilary Duff and Mr Chad michael Murray as many teenagers do out there(hey! I'm only sixteen myself!), I watched the movie because I was attracted by the story.

Cinderella is one of my favourite fairytales since I was a kid, and I am really glad that it's made into a comedy telling the story of a girl. A Cinderella Story illustrates many aspects of lives of teenagers; family, school, friends, part-time job... and it's shouting out to every teenager out there: never give up. Cling onto your dreams. Eventually, everything will be alright.

Fairytales are like dreams of every person out there, no matter you are a kid or you are an adult. Many say that they are like perfections that don't exist. Well maybe they don't. But if you really look and you really try to see, they are there, waiting for you to explore.

You know the story: Cinderella rides in a magical pumpkin to the ball, enchants the prince, and flees at midnight. He finds her slipper and tracks her down, and they live happily ever after. But wait! In The Slipper and the Rose, it turns out there's more to the life of a prince than being charming. The king prefers to choose the prince's wife, one of proper social station who would provide a strong political alliance to ward off the kingdom's enemies. That's one of the twists in this 1976 British take on the classic fairy tale, one of a long line of musical versions.

The disgruntled prince, who's as much of a focal point here as the lady with the footwear, is played by Richard Chamberlain, during the years when he was taking on the classics and had not yet been crowned king of the TV miniseries. He displays a pleasant voice opposite Gemma Craven as Cinderella, and veteran character actor Michael Hordern as the king leads the supporting ensemble. Add lavish sets and lush scenery (partially filmed in Austria), humor, fun choreography, and an Oscar-nominated score full of charming songs by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman (veterans of such Disney movies as Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, and who also cowrote the script with director Bryan Forbes), and you have a grand, engaging family musical. The 143-minute running time and dreamy, deliberate pace might test the patience of antsy viewers, but this is the first time The Slipper and the Rose has been available on video in its uncut version, and its legion of fans wouldn't have it any other way. --David Horiuchi

Description

The Slipper and the Rose is a grand musical adventure in the tradition of The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. This lavish production features Richard Chamberlain in a spirited retelling of the classic Cinderella fairy tale, and the Academy Award-nominated score is provided by the Oscar-winning song-writing duo the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). The Slipper and the Rose is a brilliant mix of fantasy and realism that will enchant viewers of all ages. No musical collection would be complete without this romantically delightful film. Audio commentary by director Bryan Forbes (The Stepford Wives, King Rat). Video interview with the Sherman Brothers. Promotional featurette--Cinderella Story: The Making of "The Slipper and the Rose." Available for the first time on home video in its complete, full-length version. 143 minutes. AC-3 Soundtrack. 16x9 anamorphic widescreen transfer.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2007-03-21

I'm not an elegant writer like most people who review movies and books and such. All I can say is that I LOVED this movie. It goes beyond the simple Cinderella story, explains a lot (why did all of the fairy godmother's magic change back at midnight EXCEPT for the glass slippers?), offers memorable music and delightful characters, and is one of the movies you'll want to watch again and again. It is appropriate for children, and at the same time will have the adults laughing at humor that will go over the heads of the small children. Yes, you want to buy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars ''You'll Forget Every Other Love Story You Ever Saw....''.......2005-10-21

"The Slipper And The Rose" is a beautiful version of the classic Cinderella story. Made in England and released in 1976, it retells the familiar story with warmth, humor and wonderful songs by the Sherman brothers, who also did the music for countless Disney films, notably "Mary Poppins". Prince Edward (Richard Chamberlain), heir to the throne of Euphrania, is expected by his father the king (Michael Hordern) and his mother the queen (Lally Bowers) to choose a wife and settle down. To this end, they plan a court ball to which all the princesses they can locate will be invited. Meanwhile, young Cinderella (Gemma Craven) has just lost her beloved father. But things go from bad to worse for her, when her selfish stepmother (Margaret Lockwood) and spoiled stepsisters (Rosalind Ayres and Sherrie Hewson) reduce her to the status of a servant in her own home. Thankfully, however, her fairy godmother (Annette Crosbie) is waiting in the wings to see that she goes to the ball and meet the prince. The rest is up to them... With an excellent cast and fine support from Kenneth More, as the Lord Chamberlain, Christopher Gable as the prince's friend John, and especially Dame Edith Evans as the dowager Queen, "The Slipper and the Rose" is magical film-making.a few twists in the story keep it fresh, while all the charm of the original is preserved. The lavish production, handsome location photography and a witty, sophisticated script has appeal for all ages. One of the best film versions of "Cinderella" ever made. [phillindholm]

4 out of 5 stars This Is A Good Movie That Is Based On The Cinderella Fairytale!.......2005-10-17

I first watched The Slipper and The Rose on TV and I liked it and thought this musical Cinderella that stars Genna Craven and Richard Chamberlain was really quite entertaining and I highly recommend it and I have to agree with the reviewers who say to buy it on DVD instead of on video! One reviewer had said to buy the video tape instead of the DVD and I'm not trying to sound mean and that I'm slamming that reviewer but I think recommending the video tape instead of the DVD is bad advice since they say that VHS tapes are going to be obslolete and go the way of Beta tapes and 8 track tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-09-23

I loved getting the Slipper and the Rose for my wife and her Sister.

5 out of 5 stars The Gilded Slipper.......2005-09-20

Wow, I first saw this on Disney years back but they never showed the same edited version twice so I wanted to get the full uncut version. Wonderful! This is a great telling of Cinderella (still not a Brothers Grimm's story but more enchanting without all the gore). The music is hummable, the dancing fantastic (and thankfully not over the top), and the acting great. Chamberlain is, of course, wonderful and Gemma Craven has a wonderful film debut as the sweet and unassuming princess of the night with the beautiful voice. A must have for any musical collector or period film afficionado. And you will be happy to know that even though this movie came out in the 70s there is still content on the DVD worth watching--the making of is particularly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great walk down memory lane.......2007-04-21

I used to watch this movie with my sister when we were kids and I was so pleased to find it on DVD. I remember thinking that it was so funny. It has been years since I have seen it, and watching it again was a great walk down memory lane. Even though I don't think that is't hilarious anymore, I still enjoyed it very much. I am so excited to share this movie with my kids as well.

5 out of 5 stars A 13 year old's reveiw about the silliest cinderella story.......2006-11-28

This is a FUNNY movie. I laughed almost the whole time I was watching the movie, and I don't usually do that.
The stepsisters are very silly. A man knocks on the door and her stepsisters open it. He says he wants to see Cinderella. And they tell him she's dead. I don't make it sound funny but it is.
I also liked the groom who had to try on the glass slipper.
"I know it won't fit them your highness!"
Also during the balls when the prince takes her out to the garden, its kind of funny then too. They talk and one of them asks if the other knows anything about kissing. I just laughed and laughed. I liked it so much I watched it twice in the same day. SO should you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, funny, great for adults too!.......2005-04-20

I fell in love with this show when I was 5 or 6 years old. I thought Matthew Broderick was so cute as the prince. I recently watched it and it still makes me laugh out loud even though I've seen it a bunch of times. It's very humorous and a treat for anyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie - About Time it Was on DVD!.......2004-11-19

As an avid reader of fairy tales and a collector of Cinderella and Cinderella spin-off movies, I must say this one has won its place as my all-time favorite. Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Beals make the perfect on-screen couple, and Jean Stapleton is absolutely hilarious as a sort of "countrified" fairy godmother. This movie goes beyond a childhood tale and provides entertainment that everyone can enjoy, regardless of age. It's about time this wonderful movie was put on DVD. If you like this one, you might try some of the other Fairy Tale Theatre movies, as they all incorporate humorous twists to traditional fairy tales. I especially enjoyed watching The Dancing Princesses, but what can I say, I still enjoy Cinderella the best. Also, if you enjoy Matthew Broderick's performance, you might like seeing him in Ladyhawke, where he puts in an absolutely hilarious performance as a pickpocket named Mouse. Jean Stapleton also plays in Fairy Tale Theatre's Jack and the Beanstalk as the giant's wife. Her performance in that movie is almost as good as her performance in Cinderella, and the movie is well worth watching. And finally, if you enjoy humorous versions of fairy tales, I recommend another video: Into the Woods. It is a blending of fairy tales in a two-part stage play, but the Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood scenes are hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars FAERIE TALE THEATRE AT ITS VERY BEST!!!.......2004-10-31

I must agree with the other reviewer that this is one of the best Faerie Tale Theatre presentations. Having been an admirer of these wonderful films for some years, I recently bought the whole series and this is the first one that I revisited. As always the production values are of a high standard and the whole thing has been put together with such affection that it simply can't miss. Jennifer Beals is excellent as Cinderella, giving the character real bite, while Jean Stapleton is quite simply outstanding as the Fairy Godmother. In fact the whole cast is fabulous. I would recommend this title to anyone without reservation! It's great having this charming series on dvd at last - not before time!!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than Disney's version!!.......2005-06-02

I'm so glad I bought this DVD.This Cinderella version is better than Disney's and the girl is more pretty. And the songs,so beautiful.Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL value esp. for the money..........2005-03-06

Our 3 year old ADORES the story of Cinderella. So we decided to get her a DVD. Then the decision became between this and a VHS of the Disney version. Well, we couldn't decide, so we bought both.

As far as film making goes, the Disney one is clearly the better one. HOWEVER, my 3 year old got bored with the Disney one. She did not care about the singing mice and how pretty the animation was. She wanted to see Cinderella and that's that.

This version is the story as we all know it. It is simple, it is easy to watch and it emphasises several times how Cinderella's true beauty came from with in. My daughter LOVED this version SOOOO much that she sat thru it 2x in a row when we first played it.

When I have to 2 side by side, she chooses this version every time. So, with that said, I give it 5 stars. I am not a movie critic, I am a mother and my daughter LOVES this!

5 out of 5 stars Why are adults reviewing these films?.......2004-09-24

I simply can't understand why adults are the ones to review these great Goodtimes films, which are directed to children. I wonder how many of these parents asked their children if they enjoyed the movie before they "threw them in the garbage."

I for one, defend the Goodtimes movies, they are all great for kids, Cinderella is no exception. This version is shorter than the Disney once, that already is a good thing, since we all know how children get tired from watching a movie in a short amount of time.
Anyways, Cinderella is as we all know, the story of the young girl mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters forced to do all the chores in her own home. Luckily, things are soon going to change when the the four women are invited to a grand ball. Helped by her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella attends the celebration in the fanciest dress.

Songs in the film are lovely, from the opening "Cinderella" to a wicked song by the step sisters "A chance of a lifetime," to "Where have you been all my life?" Music is sweet and pleasent to listen to. Animation is cheap and of course, it doesn't stand up to Disney animation, however, since this a film for kids, they won't pay no attention to technical quality.

Cinderella is another perfect example of a perfect children's film, no violence, pleasent tunes and songs, a nice, entertaining story to watch, what else do you want for your kids? Also, there's the fact that these Goodtimes DVDs are so cheap, kids can practically buy them on their own. It's a shame lovely kids' films like these aren't made anymore, now, it's all violence and stupidity.

By the way, I'll try to avoid further negative reviews by saying that this is the Goodtimes version, not the Disney one.

1 out of 5 stars If it was possible I would have given it 0 stars!!.......2004-07-19

This is the worst adaptation of Cinderella that I have ever seen. I am very upset I wasted the money, I apent 9.99 on this (it also came with an awful adaptation of Snow White), the only reason I purchased it is because Cinderella (the Disney one) is not on dvd yet. We got about half way through both dvd's and threw them in the garbage!!!

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not Disney!!.......2003-10-04

'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.' OR an attempt to trick somebody into buying a movie based on the quality of another Studio's work. How ironic that "Goodtimes Video" has the same titles as the Disney library. These are fourth cousins of good animated cartoons.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Cinderellas.......2005-10-08

This New York State Theatre Institute production of a classic, Italian version of the fairytale, 'Cinderella,' is a metaphor for the oft used description, "Where you sit determines what you see." And, a child who watches 'A Tale of Cinderella' sits in a seat entirely different than that of an adult.

First, children (especially little girls) love 'A Tale of Cinderella.' The music and lyrics, created by Will Severin and George David Weiss, are engaging. And, what little girl does not wish to be a princess? 'A Tale of Cinderella,' is the classic story, but there is a "realness" in a stage production. There princess who endures real-life tragedies, the death of her mother and the marriage of her father to a witch of a stepmother. She overcomes these tragedies with the help of her fairy godmother to marry a prince. The live action on the stage adds realness for the younger viewer that the animated productions do not. Seeing little girls watch 'A Tale of Cinderella' over and over, it's not hard to understand that this regional production had such a successful run and caught the attention of Warner Brothers.

On the other hand, an adult will notice that this translation of a stage play to the small screen is a little clunky. There may not have been any way for the camera angles to have been improved, and as such, the action does not seem natural. Camera angle is not the only reason, however. An adult home video audience is not accustomed to seeing stage actors acting in a stage play on television, so some of the facial expressions and movements appear unnatural. Stage direction and the stage actors' anxiety due to the knowledge of being recorded for video may also have contributed to the unusual end product. Regardless of the reason, many, more mature viewers, i.e., parents, may find 'A Tale of Cinderella' a difficult to endure.

A bright spot with which both children and adults can identify, however, is the performance of Christianne Tisdale, who plays Angelina, or Cinderella. A veteran of the Broadway stage, Ms. Tisdale is a rose in a briar patch. The rest of the cast is mostly second-tier, regional actors. Sean Frank Sullivan is serviceable as the Prince, but many of the other performances are either overdone (the fairy godmother) or just terribly average (the evil stepmother). Fortunately, Ms. Tisdale single-handedly carries the show for the adult viewer with her angelic voice, stage presence, and experience.

If I were a seven-year old girl, give or take three years, I would have to give 'A Tale of Cinderella' a full, five-star rating, because I really would not know or care about good acting, directing, or producing. I would simply love the music and love Cinderella. On the other hand, if I were, say, a father of a couple of girls between the ages of four and ten, it would be difficult for me to look past the strangeness of the stage play on video and the mostly undistinguished performances. I, too, would have enjoyed the music and I would have loved to hear Christianne Tisdale sing. As such, I would only give the video two stars. Rounding up, it's a four.

5 out of 5 stars Our daughter is in love with this play!.......2004-06-05

Our six year old daughter rented this movie and loves it. She has always been fascinated with Cinderella. We are to return the movie today and she is insisting it is hers. Our daughter is autistic and for her to have this much interest in a play amazes me. I catch her singing the songs. Maybe we have an actress to be on our hands? So, for us this is a great movie because it is so well done and it has inspired our daughter.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT.......2003-04-08

I loved this movie.I bought two Thursdays ago and got last Tuesday.I wish they wrote a script for it like they did for Buffy The Vampire Slayer.I love the way Christianne Tisdale played Cinderella.I loved all the songs, but my favorite one was "SOME SWEET DAY".I would recomend it to all kids and adults. You'll love the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance.......2002-09-02

Simply BELLISSIMO. I enjoyed this movie from the first scene to the last. It is the first in my list of CINDERELLA movies. Bravo to all the actors and directors, no one excluded. However, the Godmama was superb!

5 out of 5 stars Star Turn.......2002-03-27

In a show that focuses on the stars and their influence, Christianne Tisdale turns this Cinderella into a star-making role. She shines, glitters and shoots straight for your heart. Rarely have I seen acting and singing (I think she spans four octaves)melded into such a seamless, accessable performance. I just found her website. Special kudos to Sean Sullivan as the most charming of Princess Charmings and John Romeo as his even more charming Godfather. A must-see for all generations.

5 out of 5 stars "...miracles are made with one's own hands.".......2006-07-09

"Alye Parusa" aka "Scarlet Sails" (1962) which is a screen adaptation of one of the most beautiful romantic, poetic, and charming books ever written "Scarlet Sails" by Alexnader Green) is one of my favorite movies since childhood. It's been many years since I saw "Scarlet Sails" but it still has the same power over me. Watching it again recently, I realized how incredibly beautiful it is, how wonderfully directed by "Walt Disney of the Soviet Union", Alexander Ptushko who had made such masterpieces as "The Stone Flower", "Sadko" (1953), "The Tale of Tsar Saltan", "Ruslan and Ludmila, "The New Gulliver", and many more. The film tells the story of a little girl named Asole, who meets a wizard one day. He tells her that sometime in the future a ship with red sails will arrive -- to take her away to a new, happy life. She holds onto this prediction in spite of taunts and the ridicule of her neighbors...

Ruscico DVD is great. The film's images are fresh and joyful. The DVD includes Russian version with subtitles and dubbed to English and French versions. 16 years old Anastasiya Vertinskaya whom you may remember as Ophelia in Kozintzev's Gamlet plays Asole - it was her first role ever. Vaslily Lanovoy plays Arthur Grey , the young nobleman who dreamed of becoming a sea captain since he was a boy and who made Asole's dream come true by creating a miracle for her, the only miracle she had been waiting for all her life:

"I have come to the person who is waiting only for me. I want only her, perhaps for the precise reason that thanks to her I have been able to understand one simple truth, that so-called miracles are made with one's own hands."

"But there are other miracles: a smile, gladness, forgiveness, and a word which is needed and said in time. To experience them is to possess everything. As for Asole and me, we will remain forever in the glow of scarlet sails created in the depths of a heart that knows what love is..."

5 out of 5 stars wonderful - wonderful.......2005-02-17

Alexander Ptushko is known for his fantasies but this simple romance is his best. It is wonderful and warm and a romance to be treasured. And it is not overproduced. In this cynical age you can do much worse than this outstanding film.

5 out of 5 stars Russian Romance.......2004-09-19

Scarlet sails is a beautiful and romantic film. It is based on a novella written in the twenties by Alexandr Grin. The film remains faithful to the original story, only changing a few small details. The story begins with a young girl called Assol' growing up poor and lonely in a fishing village. The village children think her strange and won't play with her. One day however she meets an old man who predicts that when she grows up a ship will arrive with scarlet sails and it will have on it a prince who she will love and who will take her away. This unusual tale gets out and leads the villagers to mock Assol' more than ever, but she continues to dream and to hope.

Scarlet sails is a delightful story, happy and wise. It was filmed mainly on the Crimean coast and the scenery looks stunning. The acting is first rate. Anastasiia Vertinskaia as Assol' is both beautiful and touching while the film's hero, Arthur Grey, played by Vasilii Lanovoi is a dashing yet sensitive ship's captain. Both actors would go on to have major careers in the Russian film industry, playing, for example, in War and Peace and Anna Karenina. This film has been well preserved by the Russian Cinema Council, Ruscico, and it deserves a wide audience. Both adults and children should enjoy a DVD which shows that Russian cinema has a great deal more to offer than is sometimes realised.

5 out of 5 stars I am NOT a Hilary Duff fan BUT..........2004-11-13

Ok, so maybe I am over 16 (20 to be exact), BUT I found this movie really cute, sweet, and of course "FEEL GOOD" because of its happy ending. I don't really care much for Hilary Duff but her acting was not horrible enough for me to notice. Chad M. Murray looks good in this movie and it did have some funny moments because I do admit, it can be cheesy, but nonetheless cute overall. Besides, this is a modern remake of Cinderella and if you love that HAPPY ENDING meeting the PRINCE kind of plot... add some High School TEENS (I guess my heart is at High School), then this movie is worth your 1 1/2 hr... if not then maybe you should pass.

4 out of 5 stars Cinderella Story.......2007-06-29

5 out of 5 stars One of my faves!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-27

This is a great movie! About a girl named Samantha [people call her Sam]attending high-school.She has two mean step-sisers and a mean step-mother. Sam meets a boy through her cell-phone and they start chating. They don't know who they are talking to,so Sam calls him "nomad.'' She is really talking to Austin Ames,a populer boy in school. They talk through their cell-phones and computers. Then Austin askes Sam to go to the dance at the high-school with him.Sam's step-mother forbids her to go,but Sam, with the help of some friends, gets out of he house, and gets a lovely dress to wear. The party is a costume party,or a halloween party.Sam gets dressed like Cinderella, with a little white eye mask. Her and Austin dance the whole time, but Austin still dosen't know who she is.DON'T MISS HIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
