nice.......2007-06-16
cheap, cute, gumby. I bought this as a birthday present for my brother (13). We both thought it was a fun way to watch the gumby we remembered from when we were little. It only has 10 episodes but its cheaper than buying the boxed set so its nice for a quick dose of gumby.

This movie was very cute and pretty entertaining for the price. Delivery was fast.
How could GoodTimes get away with this?.......2006-06-23
I don't have this DVD, but a decade ago, I bought the exact same program on VHS. I assume that this is identical to my VHS version. There are a few things that one should be aware of.
Yes, this compilation does use shorts with their original audio intact. But, I question just how legal this compilation really is. Since the back cover says, "Not authorized with Clokey Productions or any other entity" should indicate that GoodTimes illegally released this program.
Aside from that, is anyone aware of the fact that a few of these shorts are edited. Knowing that this was originally a VHS release, it makes sense that there is a certain time-frame that couldn't be exceeded. To be more specific, "Gumby Crosses the Delaware" is edited quite a bit. The uncut version runs a couple minutes longer than most Gumby shorts, so this episode was shortened quite a bit, but at least keeps in enough so the story makes sense. Aside from that, in the short "Baker's Tour" the scene in the rolling pin room has been shortened.
Lastly, I know for a fact that GoodTimes got these prints from 1980's Gumby VHS releases from Family Home Entertainment. As a matter of fact, I own an FHE Gumby release that contains 7 of the 10 shorts on this compilation.
My suggestion to all Gumby fans out there. Don't wast $6 on this edited collection of shorts illegally put together. Instead, hunt down those old VHS releases by FHE. But, if you must have Gumby on DVD, pay a visit to the Dollar Store. There are a few Gumby shorts that have fallen into the public domain, and I have seen a few Gumby collections show up at Dollar Stores.
He's Blowing My Mind!.......2005-04-21
I sat there, my face covered with a dry-caked crimson mask, listening to the seer they called "El Jacques Dinamita," astounded by his commentary of the wanderer known as Gumby, a green Dali-esque Paul Bunyon of sorts, who was accompanied by an orange mare named Pokey. I was absolutely astounded, and begged him "Don't blow my mind," but he wouldn't relent, telling of Pokey's gallop through the woods, climaxing with the two friends having a picnic! I was flabbergasted, and exclaimed "You are blowing my mind!"
I had to portal into the age of the DVD to further my knowledge of this philosophical presence. My friend Finley (who used to draw Donald Duck's legs) picked up this DVD, and we watched it over a spaghetti dinner and wine. I sat there, my jaw slack, astounded that, just when I thought I could never attain a deeper state of surrealistic truth, here is a young man who can slide for miles on one foot, penetrate a book, and has a Yogic compassion for his four footed friends; while the orange mare could ease Gumby's strain by giving him a ride, Gumby insists on walking side by side with Pokey, in the truest spirit of Albert Camus.
Finley was floored by Gumby's odyssey, yet he was scared when these Storm-Troopers called "The Blockheads" tried to enforce a police state on our noble protagonists. Finley said with great trepidation "What's Gumby gonna do?" and I put him at ease by bellowing "He'll sick his Mother's Posse (on them)!" And by Golly, Gumby stayed greener than broccoli, his stoic horse by his side, reversing any Quixotic pretensions. Rest easy, my child, for Gumby and Pokey love you!

Gumby's a Pal for Me.......2006-10-09
I bought this video for my pre-school aged son, who has fallen in love with Gumby after meeting him via "Cartoon Craze" $1 DVD from Wal-Mart.
My son loves this DVD but some of the shorts, especially the one about father time, are pretty weird looking and possibly scary for young children. In the father time one (I think it is called "Time Out"?), there is a weird wall-eyed Jester with a creepy voice that makes it seem like a horror movie almost.
All in all this is an entertaining volume for a child, although it is relatively slow paced and would probably not interest anyone over 9 or 10 years old, except for sentimental reasons.
The Gumby I grew up with........2005-07-11
I've been a Gumby fan ever since I watched the re-runs on Nickelodeon in the early 90s. They usually showed a couple of episodes per half-hour show, and it included one new episode and one classic (infamously redubbed). This DVD has just the new episodes (12 in all) that have never been released on home video before.
I like this version of Gumby a lot. He's formed a band with his friends - Pokey, Prickle, and Goo. They're called the Gumbys, and they practice in a barn and rock out at ice cream socials. And, of course, they battle the Blockheads and go on crazy adventures like always. The series contains new characters, most notably Denali the mammoth and Tilly the chicken. And many of the minor characters from the original series are still around - Minga, Professor Kapp, King Ott, and the Groobee (yes!). Sadly, Nopey is nowhere to be found. Be sure to keep an eye out for the quick shot of Gumby in his Michael Jackson Thriller outfit! And the Ironbee has to be seen to be believed.
It almost seems that Rhino got this set mixed up with their redubbed set they put out a few years ago. The menu screens play the original Gumby theme song instead of the 80s version. And unfortunately, the 80s opening is not to be found - no opening at all, in fact. The closing credits are there, though. I found it funny that there's a tagline on the back of the DVD case stating 'ALL ORIGINAL EVERYTHING! MUSIC, VOICES, FX'. Rhino must have heard the complaints from the old-school Gumby fans on their first boxset! The only extra is a 'trailer' for the Gumby vs. the Astrobots video game. It's more of a teaser, though, since it shows no actual game footage at all.
All in all, I really enjoyed this DVD. A second volume was released simultaneously that I have yet to watch. Keep 'em coming, Rhino! And don't forget to release the original series in its original format. You've got a returning customer here!

Excellent !.......2006-07-13
I bought this for my kid Enzo hoping that he'd stay still for a moment while I did other things, well ... guess what? I could not do other things, because both of us were stuck to the T.V. watching these hilarious new adventures of Gumby. Very entertaining stuff and they're totally safe stuff to watch for the kids. Mine loved them, heck I liked them a lot myself! So I went on and got some more adventures of Gumby, I also got him tha classic stuff which we both enjoyed quite a lot as well!!!
Clay animaiton to love.......2005-10-18
These Gumby episodes show off the best of the epidoes which were created in 1987-88 by a very special group of animators and artists that have since gone on to work at Pixar, Disney, Dremworks and for Tim Burton to name a few. If you love clay animation and Gumby you will love these.
The Worldwide debut of Claymation!.......2005-10-14
If you like Chicken Run, and Wallace & Gromit, you will be interested in this DVD. I've never seen Gumby, but I went to the site. Prepare to make Gumby a heart of you. (That doesn't make sense)

The Original Soundtrack.......2004-02-15
This and the Greatest Adventures DVD both include the very original audio Soundtrack including string based music (later replaced by a Synthesizer for the 80's reruns) and the original voice recordings (Gumby's voice is significantly higher pitched). This and the Greatest Adventures DVD are the only DVDs out right now with the original Soundtrack and perfectly compliment the "Kid Rhino"-released mega-pack.
There are several downsides however...
1. The picture quality is not as good as the "Kid Rhino" release
2. There is a "GT" watermark in the bottom right corner of the screen all throughout the video. (invisible on white backgrounds)
3. It's only 30 minutes long (but I guess that's why it's so cheap)
4. This DVD does NOT include the title sequences, but the Greatest Adventures DVD does.
Low budget disc, but 100% authentic........2004-01-04
This DVD is on the level of a public domain release (the back of the box says "not authorized by Clokey Productions"), but after reading what people had to say about the "authorized" Gumby box set, fans are probably much better served by this disc! These are decent transfers of the original cartoons; no music substitutions, no voice substitutions, just the real thing. There are no opening or closing titles, so one cartoon sort of runs into the next. Still, not bad at all for this price.

..........2005-12-05
This dvd is okay. The voices are original, atleast from what I remember since last watching it back in the 80s. The reason I say its okay is because Gumby has those destracting/annoying/scary red eyes. I prefer the black eyes. Other than that, it's cool.
Ruined by the half-@$$ audio.......2004-09-15
I am a cellist and very sensitive to the audio aspects of movies. The original Gumby show created by Clokey in 1950s featured a beautiful orchestral soundtrack matching its classic clay medium and video presentation. When re-adapted in the 1980s, the awesome soundtrack was replaced by a crappy Casio keyboard. It breaks my heart to watch these dubbed over episodes. I wish I knew why the people who re-released Gumby PAID to have the AUDIO DOWN-GRADED FROM ORCHESTRAL TO SYNTHESIZER. If you have never seen the original Gumby episodes, then this, of course, will not be so irksome because THE ACTUAL VIDEO CONTENT OF THE EPISODES ARE THANKFULLY UNCORRUPTED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL RELEASE. Though changed, highly recommened for the uninitiated, great for your son or daughter or the kid in you!
It's childhood all over again.......2004-03-17
I'm a kid of the 80's, so I didn't watch Gumby when it was on Howdy Doody. I did see it in syndication in the 80's and 90's, however. I love this DVD...my favorite of the old cartoons on it is "In the Dough." Personally, I think anyone who doesn't like claymation is shortsighted...this technology was pioneering for its time, and has so much more heart than today's computerized cartoons.

Agreed! Only buy if you just want "an interpretation" of the classics!.......2007-04-17
I don't know who was responsible for this re-dub, but yes this is a total let-down WELL pointed out by others here! Instead of messing around with the classics for a new effect, why not try to edit some of the inconsistent storylines and put them together? Too and Loo, Moon Trip, Robot Rumpus, etc. That is what I always didn't get as a child why the same episodes all seemed to have storyline pieces all over the place!
My suggestion to appease? Maybe make a special feature available like many DVDs do and offer "Original soundtrack". If the original scores aren't that great any more THEN have the re-dubs offered!
I want my Gumby to have the funny girlish voice when I expect it and corny background music! You don't even have the robots making the right mechanical noises in Robot Rumpus any more!! There really should be a warning on the boxes about this! All I could see in the details was something about "original anomalies" about the film quality!
Not the same Gumby we saw as kids. Dissapointing. .......2004-10-04
If you loved the original Gumby then don't buy this item. It will only break your heart. None of the original voices, music, or sound effects are used in this DVD. All the sound is re-recorded and has none of the charisma or excitement as the original sound I loved as a kid. I can still hear the original funky sound effects in my head, and when I heard the sound on this DVD, I was shocked and dissapointed that I had wasted my money. As far as I know, all the episodes are here and in good quality, however without the original sound it is not the Gumby I saw as a kid. DON'T BUY THIS ITEM.
Horrible soundtrack remake.......2003-10-07
It's ok... but the synthesizer track is a disgrace to Gumby fans. I don't understand why Rhino couldn't have used the original. It's very disappointing. THE ORIGINAL IS ALWAYS THE BEST. I would discourage Gumby fans from buying this release and to hunt down the older copies from Family Home Entertainment.
Hog Wash.......2003-02-01
The picture quality is fine. These are 40 year old analog recordings how perfect do you expect them to be. They music is great. Funky and retro. If they would have used the orginal sound tracks there would have been many complaints about the sound quality from the same people who thought they should be preserved. It would have been mono and scratchy.
Nice change from the stupid, over stimulating world of kids DVD's and videos.
It's Gumby Darn it ![.].......2002-12-01
Art Clokey was 33 years old , when he first crudely created the classic clay-mation character that would be embraced and loved by generations of children and then satirized by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live and re-discovered by grown-ups and kids.
Get ready folks, it's a Gumby World all over again. Rhino has released a comprehensive 7 disc DVD Gumby set which collects all of the 130 original Gumby TV. show segments. The first short segments were shown on the Howdy Dowdy show in 1956. Then they became ten minute episodes and a weekly children's program in 1957. The show kept running until the late 1960's when it just seemed too low-tech and simple for modern audiences. Gumby was almost forgotten until David Sheffield and Barry Blaustein wrote a comedy sketch for Saturday Night Live and Eddie Murphy in the mid 1980's. The idea of the sketch was, what if innocent, nice guy Gumby on screen was really a cynical, rather nasty character in real life. It was funny and it also reminded people of the American Icon they had grown up with and almost forgotten-- Gumby.
Art Clokey's Gumby was re-born, and millions were made throughout the 1980's and 90's on toys and videos and syndication and there was a new digital Gumby created. There was even Gumby: The Movie. But this new slicker Gumby didn't have the charm and magic of the original simpler cruder clay-mation episodes made by Clokey in the 50's and early 60's.
Worry not Gumbiacs and Gumbiphiles, Rhino has done a very good thing for everyone who pined to go beyond the Time Warp and travel via the Way Back Machine to a time when balls and slabs of colored clay came alive and were transformed into Gumby and Pokey , Prickle and Goo.
GUMBY VOLUME 1
The first volume of treasures from the world of Gumby includes the earliest episodes of the t.v. shows in which Gumby and his pals travel to the Moon, go through mirrors and into story-books (to battle the block heads), reason with over zealous Gophers, stop bullying black knights, battle crazed toys and much much more.
The animation is simple and pretty crude. The sound-effects are sometimes bizarre. (some but not all have been re-recorded) Watching the episodes for the first time in at least 25 years I was amazed at how surreal it all seemed. Innocent perhaps, but there is a wealth of creative oddness to be witnessed in these earliest of Gumby episodes. Clokey had a wild imagination and sometimes the narratives of his little stories would be set aside if he had come up with an interesting visual ideas. Ideas crudely realized on sets improvised out of art store supply materials, erector sets and available toys. Sometimes it doesn't make much sense at all-but who cares. Someone who didn't know about Gumby might look at these episodes and wonder if they were strange LSD inspired dream sequences from Cheech or Chong movies or part of the Requiem for a Dream film.
No, this is Gumby, the charming clay creature that Art Clokey designed quickly as part of a thesis film he was making for his film class in 1953. He had limited funds and tried clay animation. The short student film he created with more than 4,0000 set ups, a jazz score and no dialogue was called Gumbasia mostly after Disney's Fantasia. A film producer Sam Engle (who's son Art was tutoring) saw and loved the short film in 1954 and thought Art Clokey might create a wonderful children's show for tv with this clay- mation creation of his. Engle (who was also the president of the Motion Picture Producers Association) financed a pilot.
Art Clokey also designed and created the well regarded Davey and Goliath series which recently had some episodes released on DVD too.
Art Clokey's favorite color was Green. Gumby's bell bottom legs came about to keep him balanced. The shape of his head was meant to resemble a 1910 photograph of Art Clokey's dad who sported a fancy pompodour hair style in the photo. The original concept was inspired by The Gingerbread Man, the early voices were performed by Clokey's wife and then later by professional actors doing voice over.
The appeal today is in enjoying the simplicity and crudeness of the segments coupled with the mind boggling creativity, imagination and ideas that poured out of Clokey's
brain.
Gumby is presented in the original 4:3 broadcast aspect ratios. The transfers were made from the original 16 M.M. masters and while they look very good, there are plenty of blemishes and flaws to be seen. The colors are not overly bright and never were.
The DVD's audio is mono and there's plenty of 'noise' and hiss on the track. But you know it shouldn't be any other way. These segments were originally seen by people on crude black and white television sets with tinny little speakers. The new 80's Gumby theme is used on menu's and in intros which is a let down. When the 50's electronic music is used (part of the time) it's remarkable how ahead of its time it was.
There are no DVD extras on Gumby Volume 1. Those are on later and slightly less interesting volumes of the series.
Hey, It's a Gumby World.
Or as Eddie Murphy once said, "I'm Gumby, da[r]nit !"

GEEK MAGGOT BINGO (DVD MOVIE)
Customer Reviews:
"Fasten Your Drool Cups; I Have Mine.".......2004-05-30
I knew I was in for quite a ride when the first thing seen in a film is a narrator telling me to affix a drool cup to my chin. This is an interesting movie: so badly made and edited that it is like a car wreck in that you want to turn away, but you just stare transfixed by the ghastliness of it. The complete title of the film is actually "Geek Maggot Bingo, Or, The Freak From Suckweasel Mountain." The cast list includes Donna Death as Scumbelina (Donna also is the film's caterer), Gumby Spangler as Flavian Quagmire, and Quasimodo Residue as the kitten. Nick Zedd produced, wrote, directed, filmed and edited the film, so he's ultimately the responsible party.
The film is set on Suckweasel Mountain in a castle next to Ugly Pond painted poorly on a canvas backdrop, as are almost all sets. The effect is a surreal spectacle that makes the viewer look for hidden things in the tawdriness. For example, every phone in this film is made of cardboard and is grotesquely oversized: using them is quite a spectacle unto itself.
The premise is that the evil genius, Dr. Frankenberry is trying to create a super-human via 'cosmic regeneration'. In the beginning of the film this process has allegedly produced a cute kitten, "Quasimodo Residue", dyed pink and blue, who blissfully ignores the onscreen mayhem taking place around it. The insanity of Dr. Frankenberry makes Dean Quagmire fire him from the university, therefore he hires a Quasimodo impersonator named "Gecko" (but pronounced Geek-o), to assist him in his evil experiments. Gecko needs to procure bodies for Dr. Frankenberry, so he obtains them by posing as a nose-picking transvestite prostitute, and returning his victims to the lab in his handbag. All of this action takes place while music apparently from 'Popeye' plays in the background, creating an odd juxtaposition. The victims of Gecko's clever scheme end up in what is easily the worst lab set I have ever seen. It makes Dr. Neon's lab from 'The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman' look like the Sandia National Laboratory. Adding further to the avant-garde nature of the film is the fact that Dr. Frankenberry sounds exactly like Bobby "Boris" Pickett of "Monster Mash" fame if he were on amphetamines.
Ultimately Buffy Frankenberry, the Doctor's daughter, has ethical questions about his experiments and refuses to cooperate in his attempt to create a superman out of a small octopus and lump of bleu cheese. She instead flees to the comforting embrace of her boyfriend, Flavian, who, coincidentally, is the worst actor in motion picture history. Unfortunately, Flavian has been bitten by the stupidest looking bat I have seen in a while and is now a vampire under the spell of Scumbelina. (See, it all makes sense...because...er, never mind.) Gecko is also bitten by the bat while a stuffed squirrel and chipmunk puppet cheer. He vows to be Scumbelina's mole and report on Dr. Frankenberry's doings. The vampire trio kidnap Buffy, which, logically, causes Dr. Frankenberry to make a 'Formaldehyde Man' using the human life force energy transferred from a cowboy, "The Rawhide Kid", who wanders onto the set looking for a drink. Frankenberry gets him plastered to get him to go back to his lab. Unfortunately for the audience, The Kid sings us a Salvador Daliesque song, which I feel needs to be seen to believe, so here it is:
I met her in a gay bar stoned on oatmeal,
I can still recall those training pants she wore.
She was smellin' kinda' funny in her muu muu,
And I knew we really lost the Vietnam War.
My Pooh Bear said I'd pick my nose forever,
She said to me that Rolaids made her high,
But who'd have thought she'd boogie on 'The Gong Show',
She sent a hired thug to say goodbye.
In the last few minutes of the film The Kid lassoes Gecko and suspends him from the ceiling by his hump, which provokes Frankenberry to call him a "weinerhead". The super human, "Homo Superior", goes on a rampage and general mayhem exists for a little while, which (in part) includes skeletal decomposition via the power of scrubbing bubbles, musket fire, and death by being flung into a badly animated void. In the end everything works out, and the audience breathes a collective sigh of relief after the 73 minutes are over.
This is a very bad movie, made in Brooklyn, NY for next to nothing. It is not good (at all) but has Ed Wood entertainment value. It would undoubtedly be R rated, and is definitely only for adults. I will not recommend it, but specific audiences will adore it, though most people would not enjoy it at all. If you want to see something completely different, you might want to try 'Geek Maggot Bingo'. Then again, maybe not.
The DVD also comes with a couple of extra shorts made by the same people. One is a very bad 'Lord of the Rings' parody. If you like Tolkein, you might like it; I found it insufferable. There is one titled 'Elf Panties', about an elf who owns 1730 pairs of panties, and changes them all the time. That's it. Well, she does telepathically communicate with the purple Teletubbie while wearing her Teletubbies panties, but you get the idea. The girl is pretty, but the whole bit is a bit lowbrow and unappealing. Finally there is 'Thus Spake Zarathrustra', complete with credit line "Written by Jon Vomit. Based on the book by F.W. Nietzsche." It is basically one long black and white angst ridden music video featuring bands like "Fear of Dolls", "Amniotic Miasma", and "Zyklon Beatles". It is very boring and contains zero dialogue, though there are captions such as "I'm not into monkeys. She's the one who is anti-shaving." Two words: skip it.
Genius!.......2002-12-24
This collection of films is not for the average simpleton, looking for gore, T&A and shallow action movie dialogue. It is however, for the intellectual pervert, drag queens, tomboys, art stars and dirty old men who will revel in its absurdist, debauched nature. Geek Maggot Bingo transcends reality by failing on a level so grandiose that the movie becomes a surrealist masterpiece. The mad scientist refers to a tiny kitten as a monster and we, the audience are expected to beleive this. The scenery looks like it was made by an anarchist pre-school and this creates an aesthetic unlike any other...Instead of using a prop phone-- director, Nick Zedd, paints a piece of cardboard to look like a phone! Genius! Richard Hell is definitely saucey and will satisfy any viewer who happens to have a cowboy fetish. Brenda Bergman is reminiscent of a screen goddess of Hollywood's golden age. The over-acting is hilarious and consistent. How do they keep it up? For one low price, not only do you get this masterpiece you also get three other great movies! Elf Panties recalls happy adolescent days of playing Dungeons & Dragons and fantasizing about elfin maidens. Reverend Jen is definitely a sex symbol for those whose sexuality has advanced beyond merely spanking it to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition...It takes the whole idea of a fetish film and turns it on its head. Lord of the Cockrings is way funnier than that other Lord of the Rings movie. Plus, it has an amazing, Jimmy Page-inspired soundtrack and an exploding volcano!
Better than Titanic!.......2002-12-21
This movie is by far the stupidest, cheapeast piece of junk I have ever watched. What happened to the directing? Or the acting? Or anything, this movie lacks everything possible! This movie had to have been made on a budget of, and a I swear, like 16 dollars. It's brilliant! Hilarious! A Must See!
Better than Titanic!
This dvd is soooo much fun! and offers so much.......2002-12-20
the imagination and style of each individual film are worth it alone!!tHe visuals are unique and each film takes you to a totally different place--the level of humor and wit might escape some more "limited"people--but this is like visiting at least four different planets--! and encountering bizarro characters through out the trip--it actually cheers up depressed people, inspires them ,and makes them laugh!!i dare you to check it out!
Geek Maggot Bingo alone is an underground legend-and has inspired sooo many film makers!...
Exciting and Awesome.......2002-12-15
This DVD is not even remotely boring.
The featured movie Geek Maggot Bingo is a smorgasboard for sleaze fanatics with superb performances by Brenda Bergman and Richard Hell as well as outstanding low-budget special effects and make-up by Tyler Smith.
The dialog is hilarious and a testiment to Nick Zedd's brilliance as a writer.
The extra interview with cast members (shot in 1983) is excellent and revealing.
The accompanying extras include Lord of the Cockrings with FANTASTIC original music by Brer Brian and Thus Spake Zarathustra with awesome music by Zyklon Beatles, Fear of Dolls, Strangewalls, Amniotic Miasma and others that blows away the music on R. Kern's stuff.
Unlike other members of the Cinema of Transgression, Zedd appears to have evolved and continued to produce new and challenging work in the last decade.
He alone remains active and essential in underground film.
There is really no comparison here. Kern's movies are boring compared to the diversity and experimental edge exhibited in Nick Zedd's work.
Rev Jen's writing and acting are far more entertaining and impressive than the stuff on Kern's tape.
Elf Panties: The Movie is hilarious.
The music (by Joe Meek and the Blue Men) is brilliant.
I highly recommend this DVD.

Disappointing.......2006-12-25
If you recall Gumby fondly from your childhood like I do, pass on this collection, which will besmirch his memory. It's a slapdash affair, poorly put together, featuring a wildly inconsistent set of episodes the inclusion for which there appears to be no discernible rhyme or reason.

Customer Reviews:
Happy Birthday Gumby.......2005-05-16
Gumby, that little piece of green clay created by the master of claymation, Art Clokey, celebrates his 50th year in 2005. Clokey, who started his craft in advertising with commercials for Budweiser and Coca Cola, pioneered this stop motion animation process also known as "pixillation". In his spare time, Clokey made the fantastic "Gumbasia", which led to the birth of Gumby and his friends, Pokey the horse, Too and Loo the musical notes, and Nopey, a dog that can only say "no".
Claymation is very inventive in the hands of Clokey and his head animators Ray Peck and Pete Kleinow; we get to see the abstract "Gumbasia" in this collection, as well as 4 from 1957 (Gumby voice by Dallas McKennon), and 3 from 1967 (voice by Dick Beals).
Total running time is 60 minutes.
Episode list:
1: "Gumby Concerto" (1957), Gumby visits Musicland with Too and Loo, plays "Chopsticks" on the piano and makes rhythms with percussive instruments.
2: "Gumbasia" (1953), the abstract masterpiece that started it all, which is only 3 ½ minutes long, but brilliant, and riveting for animation fans.
3: "Robot Rumpus" (1957), Gumby and Pokey leave the work to robots, with some dire results.
4: "Too Loo" (1957), Too and Loo escape from Mr. Sour Note, and Gumby helps them find their home in Musicland.
5: "Gold Rush Gumby" (1967), Gumby, Pokey, and Nopey prospect for gold.
6: "Mysterious Fires" (1957), Sir Gumby reasons with a fire breathing dragon, and saves a starving populace.
7: "Stuck on Books" (1967), Nopey gets stuck in a book, and is rescued by Gumby and Pokey.
8: "Tricky Train" (1967), Gumby gets a big shipment of toy trains, and Nopey gets to chase them.
GUMBY AS WE REMEMBER HIM.......2005-02-15
Ah yes, Gumby, the green clay boy that sprang from the imagination of Art Clokey. Sometimes Gumby's adventures served as metaphor, sometimes they were just whimsical, always, they were surreal and divine. The cartoons shown here are all in the public domain which accounts for the grainy look and sometimes shaky audio. Public domain means that the copyright has expired on these and Mr. Clokey doesn't get any royalties on these until he re-applies for their copyright. That said, it's nice to see these in their unaltered form. The Rhino collection has apparently been released with a disappointing audio track.Art Clokey and his son Joe are currently re-marketing Gumby and Davey and Goliath. Do a web search and you'll find all that you need to know about all that is Gumby. Art Clokey was and is a visionary, let's hope that he and his son can continue that magic.
As far as the packaging is concerned, the cardboard slipcase can be easily replaced with the packaging that arrives in your mail from AOL. Just throw away the AOL cd-rom, and slip out the AOL packaging. Cut the Gumby packaging to fit and you're all set.
Great to see these episodes the way I remembered.......2005-02-10
Yes, I bought the big Rhino set, and while my baby loves it, I really missed the original theme song. And something about that set just bugged me while I was watching it, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I read the reviews here and a big "aha!" went off: it was the music and voices! What a shame they redid all that. This little 8-episode DVD sampler is nothing to write home about, but it did give me a chance to see the episodes the way I remembered, with the original sound and voices.
The good:
-You can hear the original Gumby theme song, snuck in after the episode "Mysterious Fires."
-Original music and voices (so much more melodious than the grating voices that grace the Rhino collection).
-Two episodes that don't appear on the Rhino collection: Stuck on Books and Gold Rush Gumby.
The bad:
-No "play all" selection: you have to scroll to each episode separately to play. That's inconvenient.
-Really terrible picture quality.
Good Price.......2004-12-19
Well, you coul call this DVD "Cheap". Yet, look how much it is! It's a great price. The audio is the same. It has 8 episdoes, and is 40 minutes long. It also has "Gumbasia" on it. But I think it shoul of came in a plastic case, not a piece of paper! But this DVD is worth about 4 stars (which is what I rated)
I WANT MORE!.......2004-12-14
I was thrilled to be able to share Gumby with my babies. They're the same age I was the first time I saw it (age 3 - maybe I was a little younger) Anyway, they love this DVD and so did I. There are only a couple of things I would add. A plastic case, (although I'm sure I can find one at the store) More of the opening song, (It's snuck in only once, at the end of "Mysterious Fires") and I'd love to see some special "behind the scenes" features (and I'd be HAPPY to pay extra for that, haha!). This was an unbelievable deal for the joy it brought to my little family, and I hope to see more episodes in the future.
