I purchased this for my youngest son's third birthday because I was tired of checking out the worn out copies from our library. I had already purchased one volume on video, but the videos from this series don't work very well. The DVD is terrific! It keeps William and his older brother Matthew entertained for hours if I let them sit and watch it. It is really cute to watch, too. Even the neighbor who baby sits enjoys watching the little toy trains spin around and have accidents.

I have the "Toy Trains #3" video. It broke because we played it so much. My son watched it when he was little, and then 10 years later my next son played it until it broke. It is wonderfully full of a variety of really neat toy trains, vintage style music, real conductors calling out - the poor quality comes from the sound bytes being so old. It even has a segment on farms and tractors, a barge digging in a ship channel, a rodeo, and others, just packed full in a short 30 minutes. This one doesn't have the annoying kid narrating, that is the next set. It just has some pretty catchy music. I enjoy watching it myself!

Educational and entertaining. Great music, lots and lots of trains, funny "oh no's!"...what more can preschool kids want? Dads and Grandads love the series as well. Ok, so mom also laughs out loud when Buster in the blue engine disregards Controls' admonishment to slow down when he enters the shed!

My son, who is about to turn two, LOVES this video. The songs are great, and there's a nice mix of toy and real trains. Part 4 is the best of the three. The narration adds a bit of interest for parents, but the kid who does it is awful... he has no idea what he's reading! Highly recommend.

2000 miles later and the kids still love it!.......2006-07-07

I may be sick of it, but my two year old twins love this DVD!!! We road tripped for 2000+ miles last month and this was the only DVD my kids wanted to watch. I tried others, but they kept asking for "choo choo". If you're going on vacation, you will definitely want to have this along!

I purchased this DVD because I was tired of checking out the worn out video versions at the local library. My boys both LOVE it, and even my five year old daughter enjoys watching it sometimes. It is really cute - they show little toy trains in action, telling about the trains they represent, or just to different music. The children's favorite parts are the "accident" segments, where things fall over and a silly voice says "Oh no!"

DS totally loves this dvd - and it's nearly an hour and a half since it's three VHS volumes in one. I like the fact that it also teaches through speaking and fun choo choo songs.

Pretty darn good.......2006-02-28

A little too much Lionel (as opposed to Flyer)and a little too much of "Jeff", but then this is a children's video. Overall, this is about as good as an electric babysitter gets. Our 3 year-old grandson never tires of watching, and has memorized about half of "The Wabash Cannonball" . Definitely healthy, educational faire, very tolerable for grandparents too (as compared to, uh, Barney.)

Scripted and, frankly, boring.......2005-09-06

I got this DVD out of the library after my almost-2-year-old fell in LOVE with parts 1 through 3. I expected more of the same, but with better production values; I was not disappointed by the production values (the sound and video quality is EXCELLENT, particularly in comparison to 1-3), but I have to say that both my son and I aren't very interested in watching it. Instead of train footage accompanied by music, this video has huge amounts of commentary by the young boy "host," almost entirely talking about things we could care less about (loooong details of different models, when they came out, what their specs are, etc). The script was clearly written by someone a generation or two older than the boy reading it, so his comments come across as awkward and stilted. I'm not saying that a boy his age would not know those words, but I have a hard time believing he would use them while gushing about his favorite engine.

Since at my son's age he speech music over long, drawn out speech, and the speech makes it hard for me to talk to him about what's going on - this is not a keeper for us. I'm glad I borrowed it from the library before buying it.

Great idea, great video.......2004-10-09

You have to get this series if you have a train fan in your life. It's just that simple. Aimed at toddlers, it is narrated by a child but it makes it all that much more interesting from their viewpoint. These trains do just about everything and it's neat to hear your toddler's reactions to what is going on. My favorite is when the trains get a bath - I heard all about that one from my little one!

Grab all these that you can - they really are great videos and clean, which is definitely nice!

My son and daughter (ages 2 and 3 respectively) and I have been watching this series off of RFD-TV and we love it. It's got music, lots of action, some humor, great photographic quality and lots of history. It's hosted by a kid, which should tell you what audience this is aimed at. We don't have the DVD yet.. but if it's the same as what's shown on RFD-TV, which I'm sure it is, it's sure to be a favorite. At this age, they like it much better than "There Goes a Train", which has very little train action and lots of adults talking

My 3 year old grandson has enjoyed the entire series, but I feel the 7,8,9, is just a little ahead of his comprehension. However, he still request seeing it and at this rate will be enjoying more each day. This is the best train series for children on the market!!!

He loves this one as much as he does volumes 4-6. The whole family learns lots from these movies, and I just know ds will be watching them even longer than the Thomas movies.

It'll Bring Back your Childhood Memories!.......2006-01-05

This Video is an anniversary of the first 100 years of America's Favorite Model Train. Lionel! Tom Snyder hosts this special and this video shows the history of Lionel, some of the Classic Lionel Trains before World War II. This is actually containing two videos and in the second video, it shows the guy who brought back Lionel Trains, Richard Kughn. President of Lionel and it's Marketing. Also it shows some of Lionels biggest accessories too such as, the most favorite Milk Car, Water Tank, Cattle Car w/ loader to load cows. And also shows some old ads and what caught on the interest for Lionel trains. I got an old tin poster that my helping teacher gave me in 3rd Grade. It is the one from 1955 with a boy with his hands up and 6 trains below a bridge. I'm not much of a Lionel lover because I model with HO Scale trains and accessories. I used to be interested in Lionel though when I got my first Lionel set in December, 2001 as a birthday present. Then later on, I bought a Pipe Car which is a flatcar and I asked my cousin for a Milk Car on Christmas, it was the same thing only it was a Cola Car. But it did exactly what the Milk Car did, throwing cans out onto the platform. But later on in July, 2002, I started to go onto HO but I still like Lionel though and this video is for any Lionel lover out there. And it will bring back your childhood memories as well. Especially if you were a Lionel fan then.

If you already own any of "I Love Toy Trains" Volumes 1-12, you probably don't need this unless you're a completist. It's like those TV shows that periodically have an episode strung together with scenes from older shows - this volume has a lot of recycled footage built around some new footage. For the price you're probably better off buying one of the other "I Love Toy Trains" DVD sets first.

Little train fans will LOVE this!..........2003-05-29

I bought this first volume for my 3 year old who is a train fan and he watched 90 minutes of it TWICE in a row. Okay, yes, I let my son sit in front of the TV for too long but this was one of those rare DVD's that had him enthralled the entire time and occassionally he would shout out and call me over to see something particularly interesting to him. Also, unlike other kids videos, this has DECENT music - the railroad tunes are not cheesed up, they are easy to listen to - a blessing after Barney and the Wiggles (I know you can relate!)

Unlike the other reviewer, I found this volume to be a great place to start for my little guy - if it gets better with later volumes - that's great news because he loved this one!

We borrowed this dvd from the local library. My 3 1/2 year old liked it well enough but I feel the later volumes are better and much more educational. (I'm a teacher, by the way). My son loves volume 6. It's also much less annoying to me than 1-3.
