Little Einsteins is an exciting, educational program created by Disney and Baby Einstein that combines animation, real-life photography, and famous music and artwork with instantly likeable characters who have a passion for music and adventure. In this DVD prelude to the Playhouse Disney series (premier October 2005), Leo, June, Quincy, Annie, and Rocket set out to help a little caterpillar find the musical tree of many colors so that it can become a beautiful butterfly. The journey proves complex, but the ever-cheerful group uses their musical knowledge, careful listening skills, and ingenuity to ensure success. Beethoven's famous Ninth Symphony is featured extensively throughout the 61-minute program and viewers ages 3 to 7 are encouraged to sing and clap along as they learn about rhythm, melody, musical terms and careful listening skills. Viewers also delve, quite literally, into the artwork of masters that include Van Gogh and Monet, visit American cities and wildernesses, and get a first-hand look at the amazing butterfly migration down the East Coast of the United States to Mexico. DVD Bonus features include a "Navajo Maze Game" that tests listening skills; "DisneyPedia," a more in-depth look at Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the cities visited in the program, and the annual butterfly migration; and "Backstage Disney: Meet the Team" with more information about the show's main characters. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Applause please!.......2007-05-19

Our two year old son LOVED Baby Einstein DVD's and now we have introduced Little Einsteins and we are so impressed! The music of the day, art of the day and the use of musical instruments and musical terminology is fantastic. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars We're going on a trip in our favorite rocket ship..........2007-03-27

Wow! is all that I can say about this entire series!!!! I have an 8 month old who will sit and watch this show over and over again if I let her. It amazes me that this show is actually fun and educational and even as an adult I enjoy to watch it unlike some other shows for babies that put both me and my daughter to sleep. I am pleased and highly recommend this any parent...

5 out of 5 stars I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!!!.......2007-03-15

This tape has been a lifesaver on more than one occassion. My boys LOVE Einsteins. Not to mention how much they learn from them. They move and jump and dance and sing...This is the next best thing to Sesame Street.
My son even has a rocket that he does EVERYTHING with - we are lucky if we can wash it.
It also helps children imagine and learn...(oops now I sound like a playhouse disney commercial) :-)

5 out of 5 stars A big adventure whetts the appitite of our little einstein.......2007-02-08

Our 2-year old daughter loved Baby Einstein and this dvd was plugged on those. We loved the fact it featured famous works of art and classical music in a contemporary way. Martha loves it and often fishes it out of the dvd crate for us to put on for her. The interactive part of the disc is a great hit with her.

A hit with little ones and grown up ones in our house at least.

4 out of 5 stars It gets their attention but you might need earplugs.......2007-02-08

I originally bought this for my youngest child, but it seems to be a hit with all the kids. I have to say I am sick of repetition of the few notes played over and over from Beethoven's 9th, but the kids like it and they'll probably never forget it. I give it 4 stars because of the annoyance factor.

Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from 1 to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go," an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One," and "Rap Song #11." Favorite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and 2-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age 5 will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from 1 bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! If you're looking for a fun video that teaches counting skills, here it is. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-06-27

If you or your kids like Sesame Street, than this DVD is a must!
It's fun, creative, entertaining, and keeps your kids moving, dancing and counting!

We LOVE it!

4 out of 5 stars its worth it.......2007-03-15

Its pretty good. It took a while for my son to watch more than 5mins but now i just go to the songs and he watches the dvd.It has really helped with his counting. He just turned 2 on feb.24th 2007. I would advise buying it if your kid is around his age for the counting part.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Developmental Tool.......2007-03-14

Purchased this for my Grandson who is 4 months old. He has watched it three times and is very fascinated with it even though the theme is too advanced for him. However, it will become a great learning tool in the near future. Sesame Street is the greatest.

3 out of 5 stars Not very interesting and no Elmo!.......2007-03-08

This DVD was very advanced for my 18-month old. In Kids favorite Songs there is a lot of counting backwards from 10 to 1 which my kid loves too mimick (he still doesn't say much that can be understood) so I thought he would love this DVD. There is too much talking in the intro and it bores my kid as soon as it starts plus there is no Elmo. My kid loves Elmo and expects to see Elmo on Sesame Street. We are keeping this DVD for later when he is about 3 he might appreciate it then. Right now he has no interest in it whatsoever.

4 out of 5 stars lots of "vintage" sesame street clips.......2007-02-12

It has a storyline that incorporates lots of little clips from Sesame Street during my childhood, along with newer ones exposing my child to numbers in a musical way.

Shut Up & Sing finds two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple (American Dream) and co-director Cecilia Peck following the lives and career developments of the Dixie Chicks in the wake of singer Natalie Maines' denunciation of the Iraq war and President Bush in 2003. The film returns to the pivotal moment in which Maines, speaking to a London audience, raised opposition to America's invasion of Iraq, resulting in a backlash in America. The Chicks, as one sees, have had little peace of mind since then, banned from country music stations, picketed at concerts, and targeted by death threats. Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Robison respond to the extensive and sometimes scary criticism they've faced, though their latest music, including a song called "Not Ready to Make Nice," also speaks for itself. Kopple and Peck spend a lot of time with the band on a human level as well, in homes and dressing rooms and recording studios. The collective--and quite touching--portrait is of three women who wish only the best for one another and back each other's decisions all the way. This is essential viewing for fans of the gifted Kopple as well as the always-against-the-odds Dixie Chicks. --Tom Keogh

Description

(Documentary) "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." This film documents how those 15 words in 2003 took the Dixie Chicks from the peak of their popularity as the top-selling female recording artists of all time, through the days, months and years of mayhem that followed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great film from documentarian Barbara Kopple............2007-07-03

This is a moving and very engaging look at the controversy that proceeded after lead singer Nataile Maines [of country trio The Dixie Chicks] made a desparaging comment against President George W. Bush, in between songs, to a British audience. She said, without batting an eye, that she was ashamed that he was from Texas (where the Dixie Chicks are from). This led to a 'landslide' [to paraphrase one of their songs] of antipathy and retaliation. Perhaps what was most shocking about this comment [for some people] was that the lead singer from a band that played country music [a genre that is popular particularly in the conservative states in the USA] would utter such an anti-Republican [and perhaps anti-American?] comment. When Maines said this, it was 2003. Bush's popularity was at an all-time high. Our latest war on Iraq, with the intention of locating weapons of mass destruction, was considered a national duty, in the eyes of many [particularly, those who had family and other loved ones who agreed to go into the Middle Eastern nation to defend our nation's honor]. This was before the gritty truth emerged some three years later. Many country radio stations refused to plays the Chicks' music, people boycotted and threw away their albums and there were multitudes of protests in front of [and inside] the performing arenas during [and prior to] their performances, as well as far more disturbing acts [or threatened acts] of livid rebellion against them.

Through footage of Maines and her fellow chicks, shot over the course of three years (2003-2006), Maines and her brood of chicks (Emily Robison and Martie Maguire) stuck together through the media speculation and overall nastiness that arose from one statement uttered in the United Kingdom, that erupted into a political and media spectacle. Barbara Kopple [Harlan County USA, American Dream] really captured these women in a very candid and honest light. You have to admire Natalie Maines for her brave fortitude and irrepresible spirit in the face of such hatred and nationalistic uproar, landing on her and her bandmates in such a relentlessly unbridled way. We also see how they took that energy and made it their fuel to write all of the songs on their latest album, TAKING THE LONG WAY. In fact, the song "Not Ready To Make Nice" draws from Natalie Maines' experience with the press, following her controversial statement. This is a great documentary about the state of freedom of speech in the United States (Post 9/11) and a very gutsy musician who unintentionally disrupted a nation, a political system and pop music as we know it, through simply speaking from her heart.

5 out of 5 stars Must See!.......2007-06-27

An incredibly well made movie which really gets you thinking about what really happened and how the Chicks handled the situation and turned it around for themselves. Also great if you love their music. Have played it many times.. they are an inspiration and their team work pulls them through.

3 out of 5 stars "Chicks"? .......2007-06-25

The Dixie Chicks, once an extremely popular CW band, got hate mail and death threats after dissing President Bush. Their music was boycotted by CW radio stations, their CDs were smashed and burned. Their intelligence, patriotism and musical talent were attacked. "Just shut up and sing!" I think the issue here is not freedom of speech or whether George W. Bush deserves criticism. Nor even whether entertainers should make political statements. In fact, only a year before Natalie Maines stated her opinion, Willie Nelson jibed in an overseas interview: "[Bush]is not from Texas and he ain't a cowboy, so let's stop trashin' Texans and cowboys!" Willie got a laugh at the time and some grumbles from the ultra-right. But CW stations continued playing his songs, and his concerts and albums are still popular. The difference between Willie Nelson and the Dixie Chicks is image. Willie is, after all, the outlaw and rebel whose outspoken "ornriness" endears him to bikers and truckers, cowboys and convicts. By naming themselves "chicks" -- cutesy, ditsy, fluffy little featherheads, sex-objects, "prey" -- the Dixie Chicks made it difficult for anyone to take them seriously. "Chicks" aren't smart enough to have political opinions; "chicks" should know their proper place! "Just shut up and sing!" But Natalie Maines dared to suggest "chicks" might also be eaglets. Their music, songs, voices are quite good, if one could get past the self-denigration of the band's insipid name. The film is worth watching, if only to see how female entertainers can go from being loved to being hated overnight for the crime of stating their opinion as their male counterparts do.

5 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks saying what they think .......2007-06-13

Living in France, I have been appreciating this band for a long time now. I have discovered them by random on the Internet and regreat that they are not known in France. Nobody here on TV or radio broadcast their songs, so the majority of the French people don't know their excistence. I think that because country music is a particular American music and that perhaps only fans of this kind of music in France must know them. Not being a particular fan of country music, I was delighted by their music and have listened it hundred of times in my car.
I think that if they would be known in France that they would sell a lot of CDS!
In short, I have become a big fan of the Dixie Chicks only by the Internet, having never heard about them in the French medias. I must say that what they said in public in England has nothing to do with the fact that I like very much their music.
For when next live concert dvd of the last album ?

5 out of 5 stars You Go, Girls!.......2007-06-12

Saw this picture the same evening as THE U.S. VS. JOHN LENNON, and together that experience produced a feeling of deja ju all over again. It's a disgrace that so often the people running this country (or running their mouths about how it's being run) can't get the idea of free speech through their heads -- you'd think some of the uberpatriots on display here might pause long enough to actually absorb the principles on which America was founded. Koppel and Peck's documentary provides a fascinating chronicle of the Dixie Chicks/Bush flap, worthwhile to the ladies' fans and those of us unfamiliar with their music alike. They were only names in news stories to me before seeing this picture; I'm heading right out and picking up their CDs now -- the music is terrific! This picture, though often infuriating, is ultimately heartwarming in the best way, with a moral victory that's won by the courage of this band's convictions. A marvelous movie.

Well-known children's musician Laurie Berkner bursts onto the children's music video scene with the energy and enthusiasm of her concert stage appearances fully intact. The Laurie Berkner Band, comprised of Laurie Berkner on vocals and guitar, Brian Mueller on bass and vocals, and Susie Lampert on keyboard and vocals (joined sporadically by Bob Golden on drums and additional instruments), is an accomplished group of musicians who create and perform whimsical, catchy children's songs in a folksy rock style. From the playful rhymes that declare Tuesday "snooze day" in "I'm Gonna Catch You" to the absurd image of fish taking showers and brushing their teeth in "The Goldfish," Laurie Berkner's songs celebrate a child's love of the ridiculous. The uninhibited trio performs live onstage ("Under a Shady Tree") or within simply animated scenes ("Bumblebee--Buzz, Buzz, Buzz") and the songs are undisputedly catchy--so catchy that many parents sheepishly admit to humming or even singing Laurie Berkner's songs full voice even when their children aren't around. In these days of splashy animation and over-thought, overly-glitzy children's music videos, it's a real treat to enjoy a simple production that features songs that kids love performed by musicians who appear to be having just as much fun as their young audiences. 5 out of 5 stars Fun for Kids!.......2007-06-27

This DVD & CD combo are a great addition to your children's music collection. My 4-year old enjoys the songs just as much as my 2-year old. The songs are unique and catchy...you'll find that they implant in your brain easily and you'll soon find yourself singing along ...and in the store...and in the shower! =)

Someone made a comment that on Oh Susanna that the harmonies are off enough to be annoying...and while this I find this true...neither of my kids were put off by it.

It's a great gift for your children or to give away!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful - 5++++++++stars!.......2007-06-10

My 3 year old daughter LOVES this DVD! She knows all the songs and even plays instruments to them while it's playing. It's very, very cute and entertaining. The songs are great and very fun to watch. I love the fact that my daughter sings and plays (instruments) along. I even join in sometimes! I highly recommend. It's a DVD we all watch over and over together. I would give this even more stars if I could. Lots of fun and worth every penny!!

5 out of 5 stars watch it all the time .......2007-05-28

we dance and sing to it all the time

3 out of 5 stars Not Like Noggin Video.......2007-05-27

I bought this CD/DVD combo after reading the reviews here. I was mistaken in thinking the DVD would show the same videos that are shown on Noggin. They are not the same.
This DVD has several songs where the band is playing in front of a cheap, tossed together prop set. Some songs are a bit more visually pleasing with a few kids tossed in or some costumes.
My son was instantly bored with this DVD. He loves the bright, cheerful videos shown on Noggin by Laurie, but not this DVD. I guess we are the odd ones in the bunch because everyone seems to love this set. We think it's dull.
I gave this item 3 stars because the CD is a nice addition to our auto collection. He does enjoy the music in the car. However, we already have a large audio collection & I would not have bought this for audio only

5 out of 5 stars YAY FOR LAURIE!.......2007-05-21

We got this for our daughter when it first came out and over a year later, she still loves it! We first came to know Laurie Berkner from Noggin and "Jack's Big Music Show," and I have to say that right along side of Dan Zanes and Friends, she's tops in children's music! Her music is not condescending and it's not annoying (sorry, Barney!), and the words are easy for little ones to learn!

Our daughter loves to dance and interact with the videos. I also like the way that the videos are separated, so you don't have to watch the entire run if you don't want to.

Whenever Laurie and her band come out with a new video, we will definitely buy it! Kudos to Laurie, Susie and Brian! (or Adam now...)

It's also awesome for the car in case you're running errands with a grumpy toddler... and the bonus CD is great!

Kids' Favorite Songs kicks off with a cackle-worthy parody of Bob Dylan doing "Old McDonald," and from there the groovy gags keep comin' 'round the mountain. Everywhere Elmo turns on Sesame Street monsters spontaneously burst into song, and all because they want him to feature their favorite tunes on his forthcoming radio countdown. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he's sure that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Only Sesame Street could weave well-loved musical numbers around a simple numbers lesson with such wacky pizzazz, making this a countdown that's no letdown for high-spirited parent-preschooler combos. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars My baby is having a great time!.......2007-06-08

My one year old son is often getting tired around 6.30pm. At that time of the day, he does not really want to play and gets frustrated very easily...but he LOVES watching this video! He is moving and kind of dancing when the songs play, he really enjoys it from the beginning to the end. He ends up in a good mood (and Mummy too as a consequence), ready to have diner with no fussing.

5 out of 5 stars A High Quality Product.......2007-05-14

I purchased this for my 16-month-old grandson, and he just loves it. He is king of the short attention span, but he sits and watches the whole thing. As a teacher, I'm interested in the concepts taught, and this DVD does a nice job, but he just loves the action and the music. He recognizes the cover, and brings it to me to put in the DVD player for him.

4 out of 5 stars too much talk.......2007-05-03

This is a good video and it teaches children to count from 10 to 1. My daugter likes it because of the singing but loses interest when they start "talking". She likes "Kids' Favorite Songs 2" better. Not so much talking and more singing.

5 out of 5 stars One of our favorite Sesame Street epsodes.......2007-04-07

Very entertaining ! With all the other kid characters and shows out there Sesame Street is still one of our favorites for learning, fun and entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for kids AND adults.......2007-04-07

We bought this for our son on his 2nd Birthday, because he had just fallen in love with Elmo. This is a GREAT movie, because we can sing and dance together. His favorite parts are the Count's and Snuffy's songs, but I'm partial to Telly's problem of which song to pick as his favorite. These are classic children's songs that most parents will know. If you don't already, you surely will after a couple viewings of this DVD. My only question is... where did they find that recording of Bob Dylan doing Old MacDonald???

When Baby Bear must learn his alphabet in one day, Big Bird patiently takes him under his wing in Do the Alphabet. Only "The Method," (a hilarious combination of dance, song, visualization, and group therapy) can help Baby Bear on such short notice. The result is 40 minutes of ABC's Sesame Street style, where vibrant educational cartoons, enthusiastic kids, famous guest stars (here, Billy Joel), and harmonizing Muppets make lasting educational impressions. Children age 2 to 6 will enjoy the upbeat musical numbers dedicated to various letters; a favorite segment features the Boogie Woogie Piggies and their flashy rendition of the alphabet song. Throughout the well-paced show, Big Bird offers just the right blend of coaching and friendship, much like the ace support group leader he's mildly spoofing. Hats off to Sesame Street for helping Baby Bear--and his viewing audience--understand that learning takes time, patience, and a team effort. --Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this DVD.......2007-06-11

My son LOVES this DVD. He wants to watch it about 100 times a day! Personally, I think it is a very cute video. I remember some of the songs from when I was little. It is very entertaining and upbeat.

4 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2007-03-14

Purchased this for my Grandson who is 4 months old. He has watched it three times and is very fascinated with it even though the theme is too advanced for him. However, it will become a great learning tool in the near future. Sesame Street is the greatest.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice but doesn't feature Elmo at all! .......2007-03-08

My kid loves Elmo so I usually get Sesame street DVDs for him to watch Elmo. It was a bit disappointing that Elmo doesn't feature in this one. But he does get glued to it all the same with all the singing and dancing. In terms of educational content and approach to teaching the alphabet to kids, I think it's excellent and is quite entertaining too. The Alphabet support group idea adds a nice touch which I doubt my kid would understand now but had me laughing to bits the first time I watched it.

5 out of 5 stars My grandson loves it!.......2007-01-11

I bought this for my grandson, who is just getting interested in Sesame Street and letters. He went on a 9-hour drive for our Thanksgiving visit and his parents report that he was very entertained by it.

5 out of 5 stars AAA rating.......2007-01-11

I bought this DVD for my son when he was 15 months. I had been trying to teach him the alphabet & he was doing good. This DVD is great!!! By the time my son was 22 months he could not only recite the alphabet, he could actually recognize each letter randomly. I love it. Both my boys love it. They broke our first one by accident and I had to buy another one the very next day.

Yes, Virginia, there was a Sesame Street before the Age of Elmo. This 1993 collection highlights the role of music in the long-running series from Children's Television Workshop, and reminds us that such Jim Henson creations as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Ernie and Bert were once part of a true ensemble of Muppet superstars. Nothing against Elmo, of course: kids adore him and he makes enough appearances in this anthology (including the show-stopping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo") to keep today's tykes happy. Also included is Ernie's classic "Rubber Duckie" (really, who doesn't know the words to that?), Oscar's anthemic "I Love Trash," you-know-who's "C Is for Cookie," and Big Bird's Big Finale, a rendition of "Sing" that includes the entire cast. There are 27 tunes in all, and they don't all involve singing puppets: Ladysmith Black Mambazo turns up for one track, and the "Sesame Street Jam Session" includes some actual playing of instruments. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Captivates my daughter - and makes me laugh!.......2007-06-13

I think this collection is wonderful - my daughter LOVES watching it - she is captivated when it's on. I have tried other shows, like baby einstein, Barney, disney, and so on - but nothing gets her attention the way Sesame Street does. I love it because it gives me a few minutes a day to do things around the house - like fold laundry, make bottles, do dishes, pay bills etc, etc. A MUST have, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars My toddler loves this video........2007-05-25

My toddler absolutely loves this video - from beginning to end, he's usually watching with a smile or playing and watching at the same time. Either way, the songs are a huge hit with him. And from a parent's perspective, plenty of stuff I remember enjoying as a child! (My hubby, too.) It's a good mix of songs, enjoyable to watch even as an adult. Definitely a video worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sesame yet.......2007-04-02

I try to limit the amount of television my 18 month old watches. I have been less impressed with many of the Sesame Street videos, but this one is FABULOUS! Educational, music filled, cultural, and fun! I couldnt recommend this DVD more for 'real' Sesame fans. And most importantly it isnt over run by the Elmo craze.

5 out of 5 stars 25th Birthday Musical Celebration.......2007-03-09

My 16 month old grandaughter LOVES this one, She dances through the hour long tape. She will watch this one over and over and over ect.

Our daughter is addicted to Elmo's World, so when I saw this DVD, I ordered it with the hopes that it would entertain her and keep us from going Elmo crazy. She loves this DVD and we all watch it together. The songs are very catchy and it keeps her attention for the times we need five minutes

A beloved children's band from Australia, The Wiggles are four music-making guys: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Anthony. When the Big Red Car (a whimsical dune buggy) won't start, or as the Wiggles say, no "Chugga, Cugga, Toot, Toot!," it's an ideal time to sing and dance. There are songs about walking across the street and eating foods that are healthy as well as some that are more familiar like "Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes" and "Look Both Ways." The lads stir up a whole lot of energy with the help of their costumed friends, including Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain FeatherSword, and Zardo Zap. Their videos have a retro '60s feel, very upbeat and fun. It's easy to see why they are so popular in the land down under. Ages 3 to 6. --Peggy Maltby-Etra

Description

After one ride in the Wiggles' Big Red Car, you'll be giggling and wiggling non-stop. "Toot Toot®!" and "Chugga Chugga" along with Australia's hottest children's band as they sing and dance their way form space trips to pirate ships. Join Jeff, Murray, Greg and Anthony, as well as Wags the Dog, Officer Beaples, Zardo Zap and many more, for a ride you'll never forget. Start the car and honk the horn. It's time to "Toot Toot" with The Wiggles.

5 out of 5 stars wiggles.......2007-07-06

LOVE IT! My 2yr. old daughter loves every song. The Wiggles music is FAR better then any child singers out there. With the way kids love to play the same CD's over and over I'm glad it's the Wiggles.

5 out of 5 stars The Wiggles-Toot Toot.......2007-05-25

It took our daughter a little while to really enjoy this video but now she really likes it and it keeps her entertained. This DVD was originally made for VHS format so it is a little bit older but it has a good selection of songs. Our daughter is 2 and she likes it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars The Wiggles - Toot Toot!.......2007-01-13

I got it for our son, which is a apecial needs young man, and he loves it. So for me it rates a 5.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to our Wiggles DVD collection..........2007-01-13

Another great Wiggles DVD. I love watching my boys sing and dance along with the Wiggles.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey through Wiggle-World.......2006-12-27

The Big Red Car loses its mojo and strands the Wiggles in the middle of town. Jeff, showing remarkable leadership in a time of crisis considering he normally just seems to be the poster-boy for narcolepsy, hops out of the car to go visit friends. Musical numbers ensue, all of which are pretty good stuff and far superior to anything Barney ever put together. My only qualm with this video would be that Greg goes from being fairly competent in past DVDs to totally idiotic in this DVD. He doesn't know that mechanics fix cars and prior to figuring it out puts a dog and a pirate in charge of his car repair. I'm no technician, but that couldn't be a good idea.

Frequently given short shrift as a blue movie (which it is) and as mindless (which it isn't), director Adrian Lyne's follow-up to Flashdance (insert own joke here) is a thoughtful, smutty film about a bad sexual relationship. It follows the two-month affair between Elizabeth, an art-gallery dealer, and John, a Wall Street exec. The relationship spirals downward into raunchier sex (filmed, by the way, quite nicely) but principally is about two adults doing adult things but not acting anything like real adults. Attempts at actual human connection, about the longing to be "good," are present here and make this an above-average erotic film. Rourke is just honing his scumbag, bad-boy persona; but it doesn't overwhelm. Lots and lots of Kim Basinger. --Keith Simanton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BDSM Movie.......2007-06-20

This is not your average soft porn - this movie is about a BDSM relationship. If you don't know what that stands for, this may not be the movie for you. If you do, this is one of the best you'll ever see. The seduction and the energy between these two is incredible. Kim Basinger's striptease, performed to Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On," is absolutely classic. They even managed to make the midnight snack scene hot, even though I kept thinking, "Who's going to clean that up?"

This film has a well-deserved cult status in the genre. If you're able to appreciate the beauty of this type of relationship, the only real disappointment is the way the movie ends.

If you love the story, I would also recommend the book this was based on, Nine and a Half Weeks: A Memoir of a Love Affair. However, if you find the ending of this movie depressing, you definitely don't want to see the sequel, Another 9 1/2 Weeks, unless you just can't get enough of Mickey Rourke scowling.

3 out of 5 stars Kim Basinger is so beautiful and Mickey's rugged, macho.......2007-05-23

pre-pro boxer face are very sexy indeed. My problem was with Elizabeth (Kim), with this type of encounter, either you're into it or your're not. Don't try to make it anything else than it is. Either enjoy it or leave. Which is what she did at the end. Once this type of relationship is exposed to light it dies, because it was all an illusion anyway. But very erotic. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars 9 1/2 Weeks.......2007-03-09

It was HOT! For couples who are feeling frisky, this might add a spark that'll lead to a flame. Kim was a her best, so was Mickey.

3 out of 5 stars Probably worth seeing once.......2007-01-23

The physical dvd itself is encased in a rather flimsy cardboard and plastic folder. The opening scenes looked like the transfer to dvd was made not from a master but rather from some well-worn film salvaged from a cellar. Beyond these superficial but distracting esthetics (I guess you get what you pay for) the movie starts out with reasonable characters and circumstances. The mental and emotional submission is gradual, calculated, and believable. Unfortunately, the movie seems to go downhill very quickly after Basinger's first violently achieved submission to Rourke -- or perhaps Basinger's plight just became too unmistakably sad and relevant for the movie's message to be well-received. Any possible maturation in Rourke's character as hinted by the end of the movie is weakly developed at best.

5 out of 5 stars when a man loves a woman.......2007-01-23

A perfect duet of Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger makes you forget about everything, lose your head and yourself in the world of love, passion and sexual fantasy.

Perfect style of movie, perfect match of actors - that makes big value of film. Very sensual movie that have nothing to do with all bad things that was said about it.

5 stars for actors, scenario, directing and perfect act.

The DVD was actually a gift given for memory sake, but it was just as I remembered it! Very cute, and very 90s.

5 out of 5 stars I Love Sillyville.......2007-04-17

Sillyville has great songs for working with. It makes you want to sing
along. Some of my favorites are the nut and the wump.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and Joyful.......2007-04-10

My children love this. It's got great musical numbers, has many different, funny and colorful characters, and keeps children engaged from beginning to end. It is refreshingly simple and very joyful, and has many educational elements in it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Kid's Viewing.......2007-02-07

I purchased Sillyville about 20 years on video tape. My daughter still has it but it's a bit ragged around the edges. I'm delighted to find it on DVD. It's been seen by all my grandchildren except the last couple. Each one has been mesmerized by the bright colors and the bouncy music. Sure, the acting is hokey but they don't know that. Maybe I've never grown up because I never tired of watching with them.

Apparently, some of them have never tired of it either as I ordered this for my 16-year old granddaughter. She mightily miffed when she thought I had given the tape away to another grandchild. So now, she'll have her own DVD copy.
