"The love impulse in man," says a psychiatrist in Bringing Up Baby, "frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict." That's for sure. For a primer on the rules and regulations of the classic screwball comedy, which throws love and conflict into close proximity, look no further. A straight-laced paleontologist (Cary Grant) loses a dinosaur bone to a dog belonging to free-spirited heiress Katharine Hepburn. In trying to retrieve said bone, Grant is drawn into the vortex surrounding the delicious Hepburn, which becomes a flirtatious pas de deux that will transform both of them. Director Howard Hawks plays the complications as a breathless escalation of their "love impulse," yet the movie is nonetheless romantic for all its speed. (Hawks's His Girl Friday, also with Grant, goes even faster.) Grant and Hepburn are a match made in movie heaven, in sync with each other throughout. Not a great box-office success when first released, Bringing Up Baby has since taken its place as a high-water mark of the screwball form, and it was used as a model for Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc? --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The "screw" in "screwball comedies".......2007-07-07

This is the definitive screwball comedy of all time. Cary Grant has more quirky looks at Kate Hepburn than any leading man with her. Cary Grant shows his usual charm and versatility at being a comic actor. Kate Hepburn plays a very scatterbrained heiress and is at her best. Oh, "baby" does not refer to Hepburn, but a leopard! So if you also like animals this is the comedy for you. This film (1938) is pure funniness and just plain entertaining. Another great addition to any collector of classic films or comedies...

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Baby.......2007-06-20

While the movie was a flop with the audience when it came out in the 30's,
it is a hilarious comedy, lots of slapstick, with Hepburn and Grant at their best.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Up Baby.......2007-06-20

Howard Hawks's quintessential screwball outing remains one of our most riotous and inspired screen comedies. Grant and Hepburn (who'd do "The Philadelphia Story" two years later) are in fabulous form, with Grant wholly convincing as the nerdy, befuddled victim, and Kate on fire as a flaky but determined lass who's finally found true love, and intends to hold on, come what may. Sublime, classic film is fun, fast and oh-so-funny.

5 out of 5 stars Yes yes and YES!.......2007-05-14

This movie *defines* the whole screwball comedy. It was panned vehemently at the time, and no one really liked Kathrine Hepburn doing comedy, but it has aged extremely well. Now every critic clamors to shout their praise for it.

Okay - so Cary Grant is just trying to play golf and impress his financier to give him a million dollars to save his museum, and this crazy broad (Kate Hepburn) completely ruins his game, all-but destroys his car, kidnaps him, gets him wrapped up in a wild goose - er... leopard chase, and finally wins his heart. You will be hard-pressed to find a better (or funnier) romantic comedy. This action (series of mishaps) never stops, often overlapping each other. This movie shows us why omen used to love Cary Grant and why everyone USED to love the movies in a fanatic religious worship kind of way.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the greatest screwball comedy.......2007-04-27

Along with "Ball of Fire", they are the two best screwball comedies in American film history. The most talented director of this genre: Howard Hawks, and the greatest duo to come out of Hollywood's star system: Katherine Hepburn & Cary Grant. They play so well that by the middle of the film one almost forgets what the story was all about, and just follows the pair wherever they go. This kind of excentric, but delicious story, could only function with great actors like them; actually, I don't imagine anybody else doing it. It was 1938 and comedies never got any better.

The second disc is very good. It has 2 documentaries. One on Howard Hawks, with valuable interviews and scenes from some of his films. His comments on some movies, like one of Peckinpah's and 'High Noon' are worth listening to, and I agree with them absolutely. The sad thing is that 3 of his greatest films or not even mentioned: Hatari, His Favorite Sport & Ball of Fire. The other documentary is on Cary Grant. Longer, about an hour and a half (the one on Hawks was only 50 minutes), and pretty good too; only a little too focused on his private life.

5 out of 5 stars training little golfers!.......2007-04-21

Both my three year old and my 1 and 1/2 year old LOVE this video. It has taught them the correct terminology and technique and gotten them excited about golf. Both my sons are on the autism spectrum so that is quite a feat. I even got one for my cousin's shower since her husband is a golf addict. It was their favorite gift!

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Yet Instructional.......2007-02-24

I can't say enough good things about this DVD. My 2 year-old son absolutely loves it, and even likes to "practice" along while watching this DVD. It does a great job mixing in scenes of actual golf with more kid-friendly animation and kids playing golf. The narration isn't irritating or patronizing, which is one thing I was concerned about before purchasing this. The animated tiger ("Turner") is cute without being "cutesy" or silly. Overall, this DVD treats the subject matter with respect, but at the same time is entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars My 2 and 4 year olds love this!.......2006-07-24

Thought it may be too immature for my kids after we started watching the first time. It has a very 'baby einstein' feel to it with the music and cartoon character. Turned out that my kids were VERY into it and have asked to see it again and again. They were saying "putter" and "shot" after the first viewing. I have other "baby" sport videos but they tend to get too creative and gimmicky with the camera angles, speed and silly chatter to hold my kids' attention. I recommend this video and plan to purchase the soccer and baseball versions due out late 2006 (I found this information on their website after searching for more offerings from this company).

1 out of 5 stars Too Instructional for little ones.......2006-02-28

This is suppose to be a video for babies and toddlers, yet they are forcing instruction. I am a coach and former athlete recognizing that instruction should not come to children prior to school age. I am disguisted by the way parents today are burning their children out. I have found other similar videos that introduce children to sports in a fun playful manner. Can not recommend this video!!

5 out of 5 stars Tyler loves this video!!!!!!.......2005-11-22

This has got to be the best 16 dollars I have ever spent on my son Tyler. Tyler wants to be like his daddy and play golf and this video makes him feel all grown up, helps him use the terminology, and swing the club correctly. He loves to putt on his daddy's practice green now because of the video. Mia, my 1 year old is barely walking but is already carrying around the club and points at the screen when the Tiger comes up - she loves him! Can't wait for soccer to come out! BRAVO to the minds behing this great video.

1 out of 5 stars This DVD sucks!.......2006-04-11

I want my money back! What a waste of time for both myself and my son! It is so poorly put together that if you WANT your child to like golf, dont make him watch this video!!!!

1 out of 5 stars This DVD is horrible!.......2005-11-18

I recently got this DVD as a gift and had to turn it off after not even one viewing. It does nothing to teach kids about golf, the proper way to play or behave on a golf course. It looks like it was cheaply put together and the production is second rate. I do not recommend this DVD or any in the series. There are plenty of other golf and sport DVDs out there that do a MUCH better job, so dont waste your money here!

1 out of 5 stars Title of this video describes the appropriate audience.......2005-08-02

I purchased this DVD for my 3 1/2 year old son thinking it might help him learn a little bit about the game of golf, with some instructions on how to swing. However, this DVD turned out to be a bunch of kids driving around in miniature battery operated golf carts doing what ever they want, and chasing some guy dressed up in a bad wolf costume. Also, if you want your kids to learn some golf etiquette, this is defiantly not the DVD for you, the children on the video for the most part are left to do whatever they want on a golf course, including driving the carts around on greens. No educational value, great for babies who want to watch children swing clubs hap hazardly and watch an ugly wolf run around.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for kids.......2004-11-22

My wife dragged me to a baby show in Jersey when we were visiting relatives last week. Picked this DVD up with a little companion book. Kyle...my 3 yr odl son loves. I'm getting tired of all the other videos. They're fine with shapes and colors, but this one is fun and has other kids...and all the colors and shapes and sports. Kathy groaned when i bought a golf video, but even she likes it...the book is good for kids. We got football and basketball now too. They're great. Football has cheerleaders that are cute too.
