The third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit to go before the cameras, The King and I boasts a career-making performance from Yul Brynner, repeating his stage triumph as the titular monarch and proving to moviegoers that bald can be beautiful. It's Brynner's proud king that provides the fulcrum to the plot, and it's Brynner himself, with his piercing gaze and graceful physicality, that demands our attention.

The story line, adapted from an earlier, nonmusical stage hit, follows widowed English teacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) to her new posting as tutor to the Siamese king's formidable mob of children. The collision of East and West affords its winning mixture of drama and humor, and the warm friendship that grows between the king and the patrician teacher provides a poignant, unfulfilled romance between the two wary protagonists. Into this framework, the composers insert a superb score, echoing Asian motifs, as well as a bouquet of lovely songs including "Hello, Young Lovers," "Shall We Dance," and two ensemble pieces for Anna and the royal children ("Getting to Know You" and "I Whistle a Happy Tune") that suggest prototypes for Rodgers & Hammerstein's later hit, The Sound of Music.

For this 1956 production, 20th Century Fox lavished stereophonic sound, widescreen cinematography, intricate production design, and stunning sets. Technically, this newly mastered THX version is the best-looking and -sounding King yet to hit video, but in its full-frame, pan-and- scan version the formatting downsizes far too much of the splendor, losing some sharpness to the imagery. Shall We THINK...?.......2007-06-20

It's been decades since I was in high school, but I still remember being taken aback by the fact that the script for THE KING AND I was included in my junior year English Lit Anthology. As it happens, it was never actually assigned, but I remember being utterly baffled by its inclusion (could a Broadway musical merit inclusion among more serious works of literature?) and at least skimmed through it at the time. Somehow the notion of members of the Siamese court staging a stylized production of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN just seemed too weird--or maybe just not weird enough-- for my adolescent brain. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't find that kind of cross-cultural meld more interesting. But it WAS 1968, and ANY Broadway musical (with the possible exception of the then-current HAIR) would have been way too ESTABLISHMENT for my emerging, uh, countercultural tastes.

But giving it the once over, I had to admit that the text embraced at least it one or two serious IDEAS. So maybe it was worthy of inclusion in the anthology. (And, hey, the rest of the book's selections weren't all literary masterpieces either.) Of course, a few years later--or maybe several years later--I would prove to be much more receptive to a work like THE KING AND I. In fact, oddly enough, a few years BEFORE I probably would have embraced it more eagerly too. In my late childhood, early adolescent stage I was just precocious enough that almost ANYTHING that seemed to smack of grown up sophistication would have appealed to me.

So maybe age 16 was just the wrong age to encounter THE KING AND I--especially in 1968. It probably would come as no surprise to anyone reading this that I have seen the film several times as an adult and appreciate it more each time that I do. It does succeed as sheer entertainment and spectacle of course. The "Shall We Dance?" sequence alone is worth the price of admission (or the price of rental or purchase for home view). Visually, that scene--like so much else in the movie--is just gorgeous.

And it's really only been in the past few years that I have come to appreciate the "Little House of Uncle Thomas" production for the masterpiece of interpretive dance that it is.

It may also come as something of a surprise to viewers my age (and younger) just how many of the Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes from the show were musical staples on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW or were radio hits of the day. Aside from the above mentioned "Shall We Dance?" the show also gave rise to such classics as "Whistle A Happy Tune" and "Hello Young Lovers" and the perhaps somewhat lesser known "Something Wonderful." And musically, they really are something wonderful at that. (And yes, I know that that would have been the last thing I would have owned up to at 16.)

Of course, with all that nourishment for the eye and the ear, did it really need much intellectual heft--or even enough of a message to warrant being included in a high school anthology. Well, there are those who would argue that even the most escapist genres in the popular arts still have a social or cultural subtext. And Broadway musicals are certainly no exception to the rule, even in the B.S. era (that is to say, "Before Sondheim"). While no one would look to even the most sophisticated musical for genuine insight into the human condition, they can address important themes as well as or better than other popular arts.

THE KING AND I at least touches upon such important themes as: justice; classism; imperialism; feudalism; cross-cultural influence; the relation of the sexes; the nature of true nobility; intellectual striving...the list goes on and on. Had I been open to it as a teenager, it certainly could have provided me with ideas enough to chew over--certainly as many as most of the other selections in that literary anthology. And had the soundtrack been available to me as well, it would have certainly provided me with a more than a few moments of musical (guilty?) pleasure even then.

Certainly, I appreciate it now!

a great, classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.............2007-05-18

THE KING AND I was one of my earlier introductions to the great body of work, from the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. This film showcases Deborah Kerr, as Anna Leonowens (with the singing voice of Marni Nixon--the "ghost singer" for many Hollywood starlets) and Yul Brynner, as the King of Siam, at his bald-headed best. This is the musical remake of ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, made in 1946, starring Irene Dunne (as Anna Leonowens) and Yul Brynner (as The King of Siam).

THE KING AND I brings important social issues, as relevant in 1862 (the year that the story is set) as they are today. Though, dated in nature, this wonderfully engrossing tale examines racism, sexism and misogyny, as experienced through the eyes of British governess Anna Leonowens, who arrives in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the king's brood of children about history and valuable life lessons. One of the most well-known songs from this film is "Getting To Know You," a sweet, upbeat song, where Anna teaches the children to be more open-minded toward people outside of what is comfortable and familiar to them. I think that best illustrates Leonowens' view of the world, and how it vastly contrasts from the views more commonly voiced in the castle of the king. For starters, The King has many, many, many wives. This includes a beautiful new wife, the young Tuptim (Rita Moreno), who is secretly in love with another man--a forbidden romance. The king keeps wives like he would livestock, and Anna is appalled by this common custom. She sets out to break down the kings' machisimo. But, will she succeed?

Some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard from Rodgers and Hammerstein. The songs include "We Kiss In the Shadow," "Shall We Dance" (made famous by the wonderful dancing sequence, involving Deborah Kerr in a beautiful purple gown, shasaying with an enthusiastic king), and "I Have Dreamed." This film is beautifully acted, marvelously directed, and greatly engaging.

This movie is not only a classic but will haunt your memory with it's music and characters. Shall We Dance rings not in only your ears but your heart as you watch this sophisticated English teacher become beguiled with the awsome persona of a real live pagan king, bare feet and all. I normally do not like sad endings but this one I tollerated because of the enormous empact the story line had on me. What more can I say about this gem from 1956. The music from this classic still makes you want to hum after you watch it! I am amazed each time I watch the dance scene with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr! Excellent entertainment for everyone!

Disappointing and biased.......2007-07-07

Perhaps it's because I've seen the PBS series "The Great War" before this, but I was disappointed and unimpressed. The series is incoherent in sections, with very little attention paid to chronology. The Great War is longer, but it's also far more compelling. The First World War also contains a definite British bias, as it pays significant attention to the well-known German atrocities--the civilian bombing, the unlimited submarine warfare--but makes light of the British outrages such as "enlisting" soldiers from far-reaching countries such as Australia, Kenya and Canada and then using them as little more than cannon-fodder. The American involvement is seen only as a footnote, not the pivotal event in a 4-year-long war of attrition and stupidity. Gallipoli is glossed over without mentioning that the British high command left the Australians stranded on the peninsula with little support because the admiralty (primarily Churchill) didn't want to risk the ships to supply them. The series also glosses over the fact that as early as 1916 all sides wanted to end the war and didn't know how. Persico's 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour is a far better look at the war, with a much more rounded and incisive perspective; I recommend it highly.

This complete series covers the important issues of the first world war very well. The historical events, geogrphical details and political turmoil are well explained with amazing footage and illustrations. How WWI started, who were the allies, the trenches, the innovations, the facts and detail of battles, abdication of the Kaiser, murder of Russian czar and his family, the senseless end of the war (more likely a twenty years break till second world war)are the information I gathered watching only once. I would love to watch it again and again.

At the fumbling beginning of World War I, someone said it was "a ghastly mistake". This documentary clarifies the clashes between the various Empires, as well as each ego-driven or careless counter-move that led deeper and deeper into the morass that killed more European troops than World War II, and introduced modern warfare to our century. One cannot understand the cultures of Eastern Europe and/or contemporary affairs such as the Serbian conflicts without understanding the forces that led to World War I. This documentary should be mandatory for all Americans, especially students, in order to broaden the mind and educate a poplace that is too often seen (from the European point of view) as insular and selfish.

A Good introduction to the nervous breakdown of Europe.......2007-04-16

This DVD series is a good overview of one of the great turning points of World History. It has a few flaws in that it does not go into any real detail about the war's campaigns and major battles. Also the American intervention is given short shift. That and one gets tired of the guilt theme thru out the film.
It does how ever give some good insight into the absolutely horrible leadership both in the Upper echleons of Civilian and Military. Churchill was the only one that showed himself able to think outside the box. Its a pity that the Dardanelles campaign was placed in such poor hands to execute it. One the plus side he did put his weight behind developing the Tank as a the stalemate breaking weapon.
Altogether I give this film a B-.

An epic in length and breadth, this documentary aims at nothing less than a full-scale portrait of the most dominant institution on the planet Earth in our lifetime--a phenomenon all the more remarkable, if not downright frightening, when you consider that the corporation as we know it has been around for only about 150 years. It used to be that corporations were, by definition, short-lived and finite in agenda. If a town needed a bridge built, a corporation was set up to finance and complete the project; when the bridge was an accomplished fact, the corporation ceased to be. Then came the 19th-century robber barons, and the courts were prevailed upon to define corporations not as get-the-job-done mechanisms but as persons under the 14th Amendment with full civil rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (i.e., power and profit)--ad infinitum.

The Corporation defines this endlessly mutating life-form in exhaustive detail, measuring the many ways it has not only come to dominate but to deform our reality. The movie performs a running psychoanalysis of this entity with the characteristics of a prototypical psychopath: a callous unconcern for the feelings and safety of others, an incapacity to experience guilt, an ingrained habit of lying for profit, etc. We are swept away on a demented odyssey through an altered cosmos, in which artificial chemicals are created for profit and incidentally contribute to a cancer epidemic; in which the folks who brought us Agent Orange devise a milk-increasing drug for a world in which there is already a glut of milk; in which an American computer company leased its systems to the Nazis--and serviced them on a monthly basis--so that the Holocaust could go forward as an orderly process.

The movie goes on too long, circles too many points obsessively and redundantly, and risks preaching-to-the-choir reductiveness by calling on the usual talking-head suspects--Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Michael Moore. And except for an endlessly receding tracking shot in an infinite patents archive, there's scarcely an image worth recalling. Still, it maps the new reality. A few things I'll never forget:

Until, that is, our FDA decides to act conscientiously and ban the use of Bovine Growth Hormone as Europe and Canada have already done. The FDA won't do this until "the People" get angry about the issue and ask them to do so. We haven't gotten angry about it enough because people who don't seek out independent media sources haven't heard much about the adverse health effects. Contrary to popular belief, the United States doesn't have free press - a fundamental function of a well operating democracy. Fox "News" - a source of information and entertainment (infotainment) for many - bribed their journalists who'd done an investigative report on BGH and its distributors. FOX refused to air the story after BGH manufacturers, Monsantos, threatened to sue. FOX withheld vital information from the public in order to maintain good relations with its corporate buddies.

2. A LLC - limited liability corporation - is considered a person under our law, with rights and responsibilities as we do. However, the responsibilities only extend so far. Corporations are amoral and have essentially one function - to make profit. It is the only biding principle. They are required by law to make profit for their shareholders. Scary when you think about the implications.

3. How do you become more profitable - EXTERNALITIES. Put the loss on someone else. Make someone else pay so our profit margin increases. A prime example of an externality is the outsourcing of labor to another country. The externalities in this case would be 1) Financial and other loss invoked on local labor force who has been laid off and 2) Financial and other loss invoked on cheap labor force who is getting paid far less than what they should. Another example of this is seen in the privatized military corporations such as Blackwater that have placed undue financial burden on government. When one of their mercenary soldiers dies, the soldier's family is eligible for up to $4,000/month in compensation. That's our tax dollars paying for corporate soldier who made ten times as our soldiers and whose allegiance was paid to a corporation only who profited immensely from their death. 4. IBM profited substantially from the Nazi machine. Individuals in the company knew it all along. You'll see.

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the Yellow Brick Road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and décor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

This was one of my favorite movies when I was young, so I bought it for my children to watch.

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. A Collection of Great Musical Dramas.......2007-05-14

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation has released this boxed set containing six of their film musicals, each of which comes with a second disc of bonus archival material and documentaries elaborating on the shows. The extra content varies: For example, in Carousel, the film of Liliom, the book on which the R&H show is based is included in its entirety. The bonus discs are themselves compelling viewing, especially prior to watching the main feature, which could be at a later stage because it could be too long to do both in one sitting; besides, these are the great masterpieces of the American Musical Theatre and Drama, although State Fair was first a film, and transferrred onto the stage more recently, and posthumously for the authors.

The stage and film musicals that Richard Rodgers, music, and Oscar Hammerstein II, lyrics, collaborated on, in both cases later in their careers, are the greatest of musical dramas to be found.

Even the most familiar routines (such as the one about pharmacists with a superiority complex) are like old friends who still haven't overstayed their welcome. Seinfeld's delivery is polished to a shine--he's a consummate professional--and an impromptu Q&A with his appreciative audience demonstrates that he's equally adept with a fast and witty comeback. I think People sometime's forget just what a brilliant comedian Jerry Seinfeld really is. The television series was remarkable and the best ever, in my opinion. This movie; Jerry Seinfeld Live on Broadway: I'm Telling You for the Last Time, reminds us that the show was based on material that Jerry came up with. I have had the pleasure of seeing Jerry twice in Sacramento, California. He is brilliant with the most impeccable timing I have witnessed. This movie captures Jerry at the peak of his performing prowess with timeless material that serves as a testament to his sharp wit and billiant comedic mind. 5 Stars!

Whether you are a Seinfeld fan or not, this is a MUST HAVE! You will laugh from beginning to end and be able to watch it over and over and it only gets funnier every time you watch it. Jerry Seinfeld's clever and witty outlook on normal life scenarios provides humor that any person could relate to. If I ever lost this video, I would run right back out and buy it again just to be sure that I had it at my disposal when I needed a laugh. I enjoy showing it to others who have never seen it and watching them crack up laughing as it is always a good time.

The role of Mr. Moto is such an intriuging character and Peter Lorre plays him perfectly. Mr. Moto's Last Warning has just the right amount of suspense and chracter development. Very nice clean entertainment.

MR. MOTO bad follow-up........2007-06-16

I purchased Volume One of the MR. MOTO series from Fox, and was delighted with the entire package. The restoration of these films is perfect, and for 1930s' programmers, they are surprisingly exciting, with fine production values.

That said, Volume Two gives us the poorest MR. MOTO features, weak scripts, inept comedy relief. Several of these films need "dramatic relief" from the comedy. It was not WW II that stopped this series;
it was the dwindling quality of the films. Save your money.

Mr. Moto's last Warning.......2007-06-14

This is the epitomy of the Mr. Moto films and is an outstanding example from this series of films. Mr. Moto is traveling by ship to the northern Suez port and is killed early in the film shortly after docking. There is a ring of spies and sabotuers that plan to scuttle the French Fleet at the mouth of the canal to stop all marine passage. Moto wears disquises to remain unknown, and yet mixes in well with the enemy agents to learn what they plan. Comic relief comes from several Brits: the Port Commander, and a self centered traveler who has no common sense. People are killed left and right until Moto swings into action and dispatches the entire band of spys. He takes no prisoners and while his methods seem a bit extreme by today's standards, he eliminates the need for a public trial for these patently unscrupulous men.
This is the movie that pulls together all the parts of earlier films and provides a great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I found it a bit period in nature, but completely satisfying in its means of resolving a weighty problem, including coming back from the dead.

Magnificent Moto.......2007-04-10

Both collections 1 and 2 are fun filled evenings. Invite a few friends over and have a Moto party. MUCH better than a super bowl party - Moto is entertaining and even a bit cheesy-campy - not hormonal on screen or off.

Excellent Adventure/Detective Series.......2007-03-29

The Mr. Moto series is an excellent group of adventure/detective movies. Peter Lorre's characterization as Mr. Moto and a fine supporting cast elevates these movies above the usual "B" detective movies.

The restoration of these films by Twentieth Century Fox is excellent. The picture quality of this set(and its companion set) are far superior to the public domain versions of these films.

Please consider two (2) other related purchases (not to mention to other volume of Mr. Moto films) to become an expert fan of Mr. Moto and Peter Lorre. Howard Berlin has written a concise and well-organized overview of the Mr. Moto series, The Complete Mr. Moto Phile: A Casebook. This softcover book is available for approximately $[...] from Amazon.com. Stephen Youngkin has written a book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre. Having read some other reviews here, I have to agree with their basic criticism. Then again, perhaps this film should not so much be critisised as a feature film, but as a music video, or in fact a video installation that took the wrong door. Watching this as a feature film is unbearable for anyone with a sense of plot. Also, it has so many flashy effects that there should be a seizure warning on the package. But the film certainly goes well as a background for Phil Glass' very enjoyable music, or for running it in the background during a weird, geeky party you are having in an abandoned Detroit warehouse...

The first film in this trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi, is a classic.
The second, Powaqatsi, is not as good but still worth watching.

Naqoyaqaatsi, to quote some other reviewers, is just 'a mishmash of computer-treated footage, signifying nothing'... 'all quite forgettable'... except that the feeling of disillusionment and disappointment is hard to forget... The absence of Ron Fricke and his incredible cinematography that mad the other films so great stops this from even being interesting.
Don't waste your time.

Amazing........2007-01-12

If you have not watched this yet and have any inclination to, PLEASE DO. It is not a "movie with a plot" so to speak, but a film/documentation of society and culture. I love it. (But watch Kooyanisqatsi first. ) In comparison, it is what Kooyannisqatsi would have been had it been made 20 years later. I think it's brilliant.

Botched Opportunity.......2006-12-02

First, let me say, I LOVE Koyaanisqatsi, the original film in this trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi is a true visual poem that tells a straight forward story about what we humans are doing to the earth.
The second film in the trilogy, Powaqqatsi, wasn't as good as the first but it was still fairly understandable as a critique of how humans exploit one another.
Naqoyqatsi could have been the best in the series since it had ample opportunity to show us the horrors of war. Instead, it comes off as a sophomoric exercise in video experimentation, nothing more. If not for Philip Glass' music, I would not have given this film any rating at all.
I write this criticism in hopes that Godfrey Reggio sees it. He should pull this travesty off the market and reshoot the entire film with stronger footage showing us, as clearly as he did with "Koy", why war (the topic of "Naq") is so horrific. If you want an effective critique of violence, try "Clockwork Orange". Naqoyqatsi is simply a mess.

One of the greatest and most memorable moments in the civil rights movement occurred when 200,000 people marched on Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963. Not only was the gathering of so many united people extraordinary, but that day Martin Luther King Jr. stood before the marchers and delivered his most eloquent and inspiring speech. This video offers the "I Have a Dream" speech in its entirety, as well as footage of the opposition the protesters faced, such as the fire hoses the police in Alabama used to disperse the crowds. The narrator explains that the hoses shot 700 pounds of pressure, enough to strip the bark off a tree. However, the grimness of this era is not the only focus in this video. Dr. King had so much hope and faith in the success of the civil rights movement, and the greatest demonstration of this is in the famous speech. He uses modern metaphors and poetry to get his message out clearly, as when he describes the capitol as having given blacks a check marked "insufficient funds," but he reminds us that they will refuse to believe the bank of justice is bankrupt, that they will cash their check for riches of freedom and security of justice. Throughout the speech he emphasizes his mission: nonviolence as a method of overcoming ("Soul force against militant force") and the importance of walking together as a unified group, and never walking alone. Although the video ends with his death, it still leaves the viewer feeling uplifted with Robert Kennedy's memorial address, pleading with Americans to hold on to Dr. King's views and adopt them as their own. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King spoke these words as he addressed a crowd of more than 200,000 civil rights protesters gathered at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. Two months earlier, President John Kennedy had sent a civil rights bill to Congress, but it was struck down. Although Kennedy was concerned about the possibility of widespread violence during this protest, he realized he was powerless to stop it and embraced the movement instead. Known as the "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom," the country expected to hear King deliver strong words to his opponents. Instead, his "I Have a Dream" speech was one of heartfelt passion and poetic eloquence that still echoes in our memory.

Lessons Learned of a great man - Dr. MLK.......2007-03-13

Our Diversity Council has started a Lunch and Learn series reviewing cultural presentations. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's speech - I Have A Dream was well received and many of the participants left the session with a renewed sense of appreciation for the role he played in bringing the nation together. You could tell his message came from his heart as he rarely looked down at his written speech. This gentle man touched the hearts of many then - and he continues to make an impact today. What a comparison it was to hear Dr. King's speech and then to hear Jesse Jackson's speech 20 years later. I would strongly recommend this movie.

Vedio History.......2007-02-08

There are literal scorces of footage of the modern Civil Rights movement. None, however, expect for short scenes and excerpts, has ever recorded the entire speech delivered by Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech" at the March on Washington in August, 1963. This is an invaluable DVD simply for that reason along. Teachers, students, groups and others can well benefit having a copy of this vedio history.
