This Emmy Award-winning musical from 1978 explores an age-old Christmas conundrum: how does a big guy like Santa Claus squeeze down all those narrow chimneys? When Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends set out to find the answer one Christmas Eve, they explore a variety of amusing theories and learn a lot about the meaning of Christmas in the process. You won't want to miss seeing all your favorite Sesame Street characters as they take to the ice at a nearby skating rink. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of all is the wealth of wonderful music--everything from traditional Christmas songs to the now famous "Keep Christmas with You" by Joe Raposo. Several numbers are signed in American Sign Language and there's even a brief mention of Hanukkah. This 60-minute, classic Sesame Street special, which teaches kids from 2 to 10 to value giving more than receiving and stresses the importance of love and togetherness, is also thoroughly entertaining. --Tami Horiuchi

I remember watching this on TV as a kid, it was so great to see it again!

3 out of 5 stars Kind of boring.......2007-04-07

We love old school semsame street but this one was kind of boring.

5 out of 5 stars Great bit of nostalgia, surprisingly touching.......2007-01-30

Having been a huge Sesame Street fan during the 70s (born in 1967), I was thrilled to see this title for sale. It was great to see Mr. Hooper, David, and some of the other long departed characters.

It would have been worth it just for the joy of revisiting some childhood memories. But the genuinely touching subplot of Ernie and Bert's schemes to surprise each other with the perfect gift made this a treasure that I will watch again and again, and share with my son when he is old enough.

Throw in Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas, and you have a pair of Jim Henson Christmas specials with enough Christmas spirit to warm the coldest December night.

5 out of 5 stars Great to See This On DVD.......2007-01-27

A Christmas classic well-worth owning. Naturally kids will love it but there's much for parents to enjoy, too. In other words, moms and dads out there, you *will* be able to watch this with your kids without getting bored out of your skulls.

Highlights of the show include the song numbers "True Blue Miracle", "Keep Christmas With You", and "I Hate Christmas" (Oscar the Grouch). There's also one hysterical segment, unscripted and unrehearsed, where Kermit and Grover interview real little kids and ask them how they think Santa gets down the chimney. The answers the little tykes come up with are funnier than anything a Hollywood scriptwriter could dream up.

For those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s, there's also the added bonus of seeing Will Lee as Mr. Hooper and Alaina Reed as Gordon's sister. Ah, nostalgia. And, of course, any opportunity to watch the late Jim Henson perform as Kermit once again is always well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Mother-Daughter Moment.......2007-01-23

Although we are Jewish, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street was one of my daughter's favorite videos as a little girl. Now she is 21 and about to graduate from college. I surprised her with this gift and we spent Christmas Eve cuddled on the sofa watching it -- just like old times. Priceless.
