The first theatrical film from the popular Nickelodeon TV series became the surprise hit of the 1998 holiday box-office crunch, trouncing the highly competitive kids market. The key ingredient to the Rugrats' success is the writing. Venturing into their first theatrical movie, the pals--including the intrepid diaper-wearing Tommy Pickles, the nervous Chuckie, the twins Lil and Phil, and the wonderfully prissy Angelica--garble English into funny prose ("I want those fugitives back in custard-y!") and use movie references in their fantasy life. The opening here is a dead-on spoof of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The big news for the movie is that Tommy gets a new baby brother, named Dylan (or Dil for short). The rest of the film has no real plot but is a series of adventures as the clan gets lost in the forest riding an inventive Reptar wagon that is the '90s equivalent of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Parents search for the kids, the kids learn new lessons, everyone goes home happy. The Rugrats Movie is not as wildly appealing as A Bug's Life but is far goofier and wackier with its animation. There's also a tremendous sense of joy that is often missing from cartoons these days, and the songs used in the film-- from such diverse musicians as Busta Rhymes, Iggy Pop, Lisa Loeb, Lou Rawls, Beck, and Devo--add to the fun. It's an acquired taste, but the creators' first efforts to take the 10-minute TV sketches into an 80-minute feature pay off.

The video contains a short (Winslow Doc) from Nickelodeon's series CatDog. Although the animation is similar, one can only hope the series does not reach the popularity of Rugrats. --Doug Thomas

like any rugrats movie my 2yr old loves it theres alot of action but i did not like it when spyke talked

5 out of 5 stars Good fun for all the family.......2006-10-30

I got his movie for my two little nieces because I knew they would love it and they did, and so did I! This is a delightful and fun filled movie where the Wild Thornberries and the Rugrats meet up in an adventure of a lifetime.

Stranded on a tropical island after their boat capsizes, the Rugrats and their families have to survive in an environment to which they are not at all suited too but help is at hand in the guise of the Wild Thornberries who just happen to be in the area on one of their jaunts.

The adults squabble and bicker (but they all make up and work together when the children are in danger) whilst the Rugrats lurch from one crazy adventure to the next and we are treated to Spike the dog speaking for the first time (Bruce Willis) because everyone knows that Eliza Thornberry has a wonderful secret, she can speak to animals and they understand her and can speak back!

It's a nice movie because it brings together two great animated series, it also is a fun film that young kids can watched and be enthralled with, that is what I like about it the most, it is an enjoyable cartoon romp for the whole family.

--------------------------------------------------

The Scratch & Sniff options on the DVD relate to the "Odorama" stunt used during the film's original theatrical release. Special numbered cards, each representing a particular smell, were available with kids' meals at participating Burger King restaurants from 6/2/2003 to 6/29/2003, and separately at Blockbuster Video stores from 6/15/2003 until supplies ran out.

Participants picked up the cards, then took them to the local movie theater showing the film. When a particular number flashed on the screen, viewers scratched off the scent that had that particular number on it. Numbers flashing in red mean that the viewer should find the corresponding number on their card (glow-in-the-dark for their convenience), and be ready to scratch-and-sniff when the on-screen number turns green.

Sadly, Paramount Home Video decided not to include the cards with the DVD release. So unless you got a card when the film was originally theatrically released, you're out of luck.

Here are the numbers, DVD time codes of when the numbers first appear on screen, and description of the scent.

1 - 05:31 - strawberry
2 - 11:42 - peanut butter
3 - 22:41 - a flower
4 - 39:05 - smelly feet
5 - 48:50 - root beer float
6 - 62:58 - fish

I've uploaded a small scan of the card to the Product Images section for this DVD, so feel free to take a look at it.

4 out of 5 stars It's amazing!.......2004-08-02

There's a lot of action in this movie. I like when Spike talks...it was really funny! I like that Debbie and Angelica meet each other, because they're alike...they're both mean and bossy. It was nice to see Angelica get bossed around for a change. I didn't think this movie was too scary. My brother and I really enjoyed this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Not as funny or creative or whimsical as the first two!.......2004-07-28

This Rugrats movie is the worst of the three. Obviously, it was made for promotion and cash more than anything. Nickelodeon didn't consider the plot in the process, so the movie suffers. The plot is complex, yet it still manages to be too simple to be taken seriously, and it has about fifty holes and sub-plots. The movie is too complex for even a 10-year-old to grasp. Since Rugrats is aimed for 3-9 year olds, they won't get it. The main promotions for the movie were the scratch and sniff sequence [also, Burger King promotion to go with that], and the fact that Spike would now talk. Hah! Spike talked in the episode of the series about Chuckie's dreams. Besides, smelling some disgusting card [that you can smell anytime, not during the movie] isn't fun. The burger smells more like spoiled milk. Anyway, the movie is fluffy and light and tries for a few forced laughs but it dosen't happen. Debbie's well-publicized line and the "That is so wrong!" line, and the Wedgie-dance, are among the stupidest things I have ever seen. Maybe an 8-year-old would disagree. Being 12, I found the humour pretty dumb. So you're aware, I love the series. This movie just wasn't creative at all, it was more of a Thornberry-type flick. And finally, it just isn't whimsical or special in any way. Not recommended for anything except a rental from the video store, if that.

The second theatrical film from the popular television show is better than the original surprise hit. Instead of delving into their rich fantasy life, the Rugrats gang goes on a real adventure when their families visit Paris together. Mr. Pickles is brought over to fix his giant Reptar robot, the centerpiece of EuroReptarland (a biting version of the trouble-plagued EuroDisney). The underlying story has Chuckie (the one with the square glasses) looking for a new mommy, as his dad (who has a square personality) starts to fall for a villainous executive (voiced by Susan Sarandon). Soon Paris takes it on the chin as the diaper gang tries to save Chuckie's dad from the altar. The success of the Rugrats is in the writing, where much thought goes into finding comic gems for the adults (there are wonderful parodies of The Godfather and King Kong that will sail over kids' heads). The garble-mouthed youngsters keep up their joyful ways in this 78-minute feature that feels no different from their Nickelodeon series except in length, some 3-D animation sequences, and an eclectic song score (with Cyndi Lauper's "I Want a Mom That Will Last Forever" the real catch). 5 out of 5 stars Inappropriately aimed at children.......2007-01-07

First of all, let me say that I really enjoyed the first film and lets just say that I havent laughed that hard since the time that I saw that "Help, Ive fallen and I cant get up!" commercial, but the second film really is not appropriate for children. There are numerous sexual references and unneeded foul language all commited by children for children. It is obvious that the actor protraying Tommy(the main character) is not a child anymore (when was the last time you hear a baby speaking perfect english, I mean HELLLOO???) and should pass to role on. I am very disappointed with the producers and actors for taking place in this kind of film. Thumbs down big time!

5 out of 5 stars An 8-year-old's review.......2006-06-26

Of course, I think this movie is super! The reason I rated it 5 stars is because of the plot. Actually, there were a few plots, like the wedding, giant robots, broken hearts, and lying. That is everything I love. Well, okay, maybe the fact that it's not scary is distressing, because I love horror. But, all in all, it was a great film. I watch it a lot with my mom. The villain, Cocoa, was super. Her plan was to become the president of the whole theme park and, believe me, that was a very important job. The whole reason they had to go to Paris, France was because the gigantic robot, Reptar, had his head blown up, which I think was hilarious. It made a huge mess, and then they had to go all the way to Paris which, believe me, is a long way. But, it really turned into an adventure and here are some things that happened: a crazy woman tried to trick Chuckie's dad into marrying her, and a dog running away, then a wedding, and a gigantic robo-snail which, believe me, is exciting and entertaining. I would have given it about 4 stars, but the plot just had to make one more star. My favorite part was when the whole plot began, but Chuckie knew that he must stop all these weird things from really happening, or his life would be ruined. If you ask me, there was a lot they had to worry about. I mean, they still did fix Reptar, which was important. There are even cool controls that make Reptar move. This was the best Rugrats movie I have seen so far. Believe me, you will want to watch this movie over and over with your family.

I loved Rugrats! It was my favorite show! Nickelodeon was awesome when Rugrats were on TV! I have the videos. Rugrats is still my favorite show! Nickelodeon isn't the same! I wish it was in the 90's again.

4 out of 5 stars This isn't good enough!.......2007-02-19

The only reason I'm giving this DVD collection a 4 is simply because it is the Rugrats. The Rugrats was the best animated show Nick ever had, period. It's such a mistake that towards it's end they just slowly let it dwindle and were unable to interest their new audience in All Grown Up. The Rugrats are my memory of the 1990s and my childhood, and it makes me angry that Nick hasn't released seasons of it. PUT OUT THE SEASONS!

3 out of 5 stars The Old Nick Shows, Please.......2007-05-20

Mine will be a familiar refrain; the old Nick shows, please. That Saturday night line-up was the absolute best. My kids and I shared many special evenings watching those shows, and now that they've grown up and moved on, I'd like to recapture some of that magic. As someone else has already commented; my check is written, just produce the goods.

It's this simple: I won't be buying this.

Give me "YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON TELEVISION" and "SALUTE YOUR SHORTS". Please complete "CLARISSA" and "PETE AND PETE". I'll buy those.

I've already written out a check for what these will cost. Now I wait.....

1 out of 5 stars Old Nick Shows.......2007-03-17

Whatever happened to Hey Dude or Salute Your Shorts? THOSE, for sure, should be on DVD. Not the shows that are still on air.

1 out of 5 stars Agree and disagree.......2007-03-09

True those were great shows......but please.....if we want to include even better shows (and yes i agree - very few today are any good at all), we need to go back to the 80s! Double Dare, You Can't Do That On TV, PinWheel, etc!
=)

It's a multifamily getaway on the rails in "Murmur on the Ornery Express," the double-episode that finds the kids, parents, and grandparents on board a train with a shadowy thief. When both Grandma's necklace and Chuckie's teddy bear turn up missing, one wonders whether a burglar could have such eclectic taste. The diapered ones solve the smaller mystery, allowing a trench-coated detective to recover the jewelry. In "The Fun Way Day," Chas and Kira's new coffeehouse tanks, so they hire a feng shui expert to change its ambience. Of course the kids misinterpret the Chinese phrase as "fun way" and play with his trinkets once the adults have inevitably left them alone. The result is a predictably catastrophic mess, but also an energy transfer that brings in the customers. Finally, Angelica offers up one of the babies as a play toy to ingratiate herself with some older girls in "Trading Phil." (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

This collection contains the first two Rugrats feature films:

    The Rugrats Movie
The first theatrical film from the popular Nickelodeon TV series became the surprise hit of the 1998 holiday box-office crunch, trouncing the highly competitive kids' market.

Parents search for the kids, the kids learn new lessons, and everyone goes home happy. The Rugrats Movie is not as wildly appealing as A Bug's Life but is far goofier and wackier with its animation. There's also a tremendous sense of joy that is often missing from cartoons these days, and the songs used in the film--from such diverse musicians as Busta Rhymes, Iggy Pop, Lisa Loeb, Lou Rawls, Beck, and Devo--add to the fun. It's an acquired taste, but the creators' first efforts to take the 10-minute TV sketches into an 80-minute feature pay off.

    Rugrats in Paris: The Movie
The second theatrical film from the popular TV show is better than the original surprise hit. 5 out of 5 stars cute, adorable and funny.......2006-08-31

Rugrats are so cute and sweet. Many hours of family fun. I watch it myself when I just want something to relax by and don't feel like changing the DVD.

    4 out of 5 stars I love Lil.......2005-08-27

Lil's the best from Rugrats. She's so cute. I don't like Phil that much. I love Lil. Dil is a horrible character.

    5 out of 5 stars Rugrats.......2004-03-30

Any Rugrats lover is sure to love these movies! I rented them before because I think the show is just too cute and knew the kids would enjoy it. To my surprise, even my husband has become a fan of the Rugrats after viewing the first movie where little Dill arrives. We also enjoyed their trip to Paris! and we reciently bought Rugrats Go Wild! and are now adding the first movie and the trip to Paris to our DVD home library.
We feel that any parent who enjoys cartoons as much as their kids, will certinly enjoy watching these movies anytime with their childern.

I used to love this movie. The animation is amazing, and the voice talent couldn't be better. My only complaint is that the animation can sometimes be a tad disgusting, particularly in the scenes with Dil. Otherwise, a top-notch movie.

    A Kid's Review
I Just haaaaaaaate the Rugrats! It's stipud, boring, and gross.I have no idea why alot of kids like this show and for you pepole over 20 who do I say get a job!Whats so great about it!All they do is site in they're crub, mispronounce words and sentences, say poopie, drop dippers, play pertend, and other dumb and gross stuff. There is also prombles between this show and the real world for insteens there is some pepole who watch this show and can't speak perfect english (eventhough I only know one I bet thery's more).Maybe becouse The Rugrats say stuff like I gots to go potty and another thing is younger kids might copy the gross habbits from this show such as going to the bathroom on trees and eat stuff they're not soposto to eat like bugs. If you don't agree with then too bad but you adment.

Okay, man, I don't even know what you're trying to say. If there was one thing I got out of that brainless rant, it was this: you're a hypocrite. You say that the Rugrats don't use perfect English and mispronounce words. Well, look at your review! It looks like it was typed by a 6-year-old. Plus, the characters are FREAKING BABIES!!! If you could talk at that age, wouldn't you sound the same way?

4 out of 5 stars The Rugrats before the decline.......2005-10-03

As I write this review I can't help but remember when I loved the Rugrats. It was once my favorite show in television as a kid. And when the movie came out in theaters I was more excited than anyone would've imagined. I was a huge fan. The TV show has decreased in quality, but the movie still remains solid. It introduced a new character to the series, and to this day still remains the greatest adventure that the rugrats have gone on.

Didi has recently found out she's pregnant, and that means Tommy is getting a baby brother. When Tommy's new brother Dil is born, things around the house change. Dil begins to receive a bit more attention than Tommy, and he's always loud and obnoxious... the way Tommy used to be when he was first born. Phil, Lil, and Chuckie can't stand him and neither can Angelica.

In the meantime, Stewie has made a new invention. A Reptar mobile (Reptar is the Rugrats version of "Godzilla" and the babies' hero). When Stu and Didi head out for a while, they leave the kids home alone with Grandpa. If you've watched the show you know Grandpa is not a good baby sitter... he always falls asleep, and that's what he does here.

The babies see this Reptar mobile and decide to hop inside and play around. Angelica (the rambuncious three year old brat) is trying to watch her show and so she is very annoyed. She gives the babies the boot (literally) and the Reptar wagon suddenly slides out the front door. Tommy has little idea how to control it, and neither do his friends. Phil and Lil, however, don't see it as such a bad thing. To them it's a chance to take new-born baby Dil back to the hospital.

With the babies gone, Angelica can finally find peace... except there's a problem. When she gave the babies the boot they took her favorite doll Cynthia with them! Now Angelica decides she must find them, and so she saddles up the family dog, Spike. And Spike ends up running out the front door... dragging Angelica along.

The result? The babies getting lost in the forest far away from home. When the parents find out, they go on a large search for the babies.

I suppose what got me to really like this movie was the adventure of it. The little imagination of these babies is amazing! The movie even begins with a little rendition of "Indiana Jones" as they're actually exploring thier house. But when they really AREN'T in a place that's their home, you can see just how brave they get.

Never mind how stupid the parents are (they NEVER learn from leaving the babies with Grandpa), the adventure is exciting. Especially when Phil and Lil manage to let a bunch of monkey's take Dil away. Soon Tommy really IS the one responsible for his brother. The movie is funny in many places, and it's songs are enlightening. Any child will enjoy this movie to death.

Unlike it's sequel, the babies get into some trouble that isn't too far beyond their control. By that I mean, the Reptar mobile is just a wagon, and not some HUGE GIGANTIC THING DESTROYING THE CITY! This adventure is more REAL than in the sequel, "Rugrats in Paris".

And while Dil isn't the most likeable character, it's unrealistic to think he can do as much as the other babies can (he can't walk, mind you). It would help if Dil was as adventureous as his brother, but considering he's only a few weeks old, we can get by.

The animation is top notch, and very vivid and vibrant. Much better than the television show ever was. It's just incredible.

If there were problems I'd say it's this: It is certainly not a movie for grown ups. If you grew up with the Rugrats as I did, you will probably like this movie. However, grown ups who didn't grow up with the Rugrats, will be annoyed by their kids loving to watch the film. It is clearly aimed at the younger audience.

It's a great movie. Especially for your kids, and especially for nostalgia. This was an incredible movie eight years ago, and remains a good movie for your kids today.

    5 out of 5 stars Rugrats Movie & Dude Where's My Horse - Rugrats.......2005-09-09

My son is a fan of the Rugrats and wanted the two movies for his movie collection. He looks at the movies over and over again. The movies even helps him to relax before going to bed.

2 out of 5 stars Don't watch it with your kids.......2005-09-03

The animation in this movie is an improvement over the televised series, the voice talent is good, the plot is solid-and I hate this movie. I cannot tolerate the body fluid/noise humor, the screaming and squalling of the kids, and the mamby pamby parents. But my daughter cannot get enough of this. She watches it at least once a week, and it never fails to delight her.

5 out of 5 stars Here thar' be (diapered) dwarves!.......2006-01-14

We purchased this DVD a while after it aired on Nickelodeon. We love the DVD and I will explain its features.

In this DVD, Taffy the babysitter tells the Rugrats the classic story of Snow White. Susie stars as Snow White, Angelica stars as the evil queen, and Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Dil, Kimi and Spike star as the 7 dwarves.

From there, the fairy tale becomes an exciting journey, full of fun events and great music. Songs include "Do It Together" and the hilarious "Diaper Factory Song."

Also included on this DVD are 2 episodes from a new Rugrats series "Preschool Daze" featuring Susie and Angelica. We love the episodes and hope these and more will soon air on Nickeloden.

Over all, 5 stars. Simply a must-have for those who enjoy the Rugrats.

    5 out of 5 stars A great movie!.......2005-11-11

If you're wondering that this is going to be just like the regular Rugrats you see on T.V., think again! "Tales from the Crib" gives viewers a new twist on their favorite babies and childhood fairy tales. Taffy, the Rugrats' babysitter, tells the stories to the babies, who give it their own Rugrats twist. In "Snow White", Susie plays the title character, Angelica (of course) plays the evil queen, and the babies along with Spike play the seven dwarves. This is a very good direct-to-DVD movie and will probably never air on television. This is very hard to find in stores and is not available to rent. Also, this DVD features two episodes of the Rugrats spin-off, "Pre-School Daze", which has not yet airred in the U.S. Those episodes are very fun to watch and the theme song is very catchy. I would reccomend this DVD to anyone.
