We got this tape for our first when she was 3 years old, some years ago. I think she (and her parents) watched it a couple of hundred times! This year, our younger one, also 3, has taken to it, just as her big sister once did (and she too is enjoying watching it all over again).

From an adult point of view, it is a bit hokey at first(I had a hard time keeping a straight face listening to the "Dutch" Girl). But it captivates you over time, and we came to realize that this is a real class-act of a children's video; very much an overlooked classic. Absolutely the best, a must for every DVD shelf.

My daughter is 4 years old and she enjoys watching this dvd. I have to admit I also enjoyed watching it with her. My daughter began to sing the songs to an adult friend of ours and our friend was amazed that my daughter knew the same songs we grew up with. It's a great DVD and it teaches our children songs that are so innocent in nature. I love it. OOOPS! I mean my daughter loves it.

When she takes him on a video tour of pocket-eating cultures, however (think China's dim sum), he warms to the idea, and what results is a scrumptious-looking summer roll. Each of the video's cooking segments is intercut with food-related bits from the show--Grover's hilarious gig as a hopeless waiter is one. Elmo's Magic Cookbook is great! It taught my 20 month old daughter to the importance of washing her hands before she eats. It is filled with entertaining music and kitchen tips for kids. (Don't touch the knives, etc.) My daughter loves playing in her toy kitchen so she really enjoyed this DVD.

My 3 year old son watches this video over and over again! He loves to watch me cook in the kitchen so he really enjoys watching Elmo. It's filled with lots of laughs and learning experiences that Elmo's World always offers!

I got this after seeing Elmo on "Emeril Live" one night, and Emeril is in Elmo's DVD. Elmo is so cute, and through his eagerness to learn he encourages children to learn. He's a good example for children. Elmo actually does some of the cooking in this one. The guy behind Elmo is brilliant. He knows what's good for children to see and hear, and he certainly has the right voice for this character. I would recommend anything with Elmo in it.

But this is just a personal opinion. My son didn't find it exciting and it just didn't keep him interested. We just have to keep looking for something else that is as exciting and captivating as Grouchland. Now that was 5 Stars! Even me and my husband like that movie.

My 6 year old is non-verbal and a movie fanatic. He had Elmo's Cookbook years ago and wore it out - this year that was all he wanted from Santa - 1 hour after opening it he accidentally cracked the dvd - and was heartbroken. Thus the reason for re-ordering - this is a wonderful movie!!!!!!!!

This charming British animated short film (it's just 23 minutes long) is a 1982 production of London's Channel 4, based on the classic children's book by Raymond Briggs and crafted with a colored-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations. Small children should be entranced by the story of a small boy in rural England whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do English country dances. Father Christmas
This irreverent Santa breaks from tradition in many ways. He has no Mrs., owns only four reindeer, and decides to convert his sleigh into an airborne motor home for a pre-Christmas vacation. He finds France too snooty, Scotland too cold, and Las Vegas just right. Tanned and rested, he returns to the North Pole in time to sort through the mail, pack up the toys, and hit the skies. Like the Santa of the Raymond Briggs book on which this 24-minute video is loosely based, he narrates his own story (splendidly voiced by Los Angeles stage actor William Dennis Hunt). But fans of the 1973 book will find the animated version far less cranky than the original. Although the book was aimed at ages 4-8, the video may have a wider appeal, depending on how you feel about the children seeing Santa gambling at the casino tables, dreaming of bikini-clad babes, and suffering a bout of diarrhea. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Excellent movie screen adaptation .......2006-05-28

I will not go through the story as you can read my review of the book. However the basic primes is of a boy who grows up as the orphan nephew of a family that does not believe in magic only to find that he is a famous wizard. How will he handle his situation and the interaction with friends?
The movie its self as with all movies would have to be a mini-series to incorporate all the nuances of the book. However this movie does an excellent job of selection and gives the overall feel of the story.
Naturally comparing and contrasting this story with others in it genre you will always find a better or a favorite. This in no way diminishes the excellent story and the cohesiveness of the movie.

UMD Review!!! Plus, where to find COS and POA on UMD for US.......2006-04-01

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is finally on UMD, and boy does it deliver. As a great starter in the series, it does have a few hits and misses in the VFX department, but it certainly set the style and mood for what was next to come. A great job with the adaptation, design and casting.

AUDIO/VISUAL:
Here, we are treated to a great transfer, preserved in it's 2:35 Aspect Ratio, with glorious picture, clear and sharp. The audio also is nice and clean, and ramps up when the action takes place. Overall, a very nice transfer for the fans.

CHAMBER OF SECRETS/ PRISONER OF AZKABAN UMD's:
Also, over here in Australia, we have released the entire series on UMD, inc 'Chamber of Secrets' and 'Prisoner of Azkaban'. The great thing is, they work on a Region 1 US PSP (my PSP is from USA). I bought them 2 days ago, and they work like a treat.

So if you're like me, and want all of them instead of waiting, get em form Australia.

This video is an excellent introduction of the true spirit of martial arts to children. In good taste, it discusses the realities of environmental violence to children and teaches them
the wisdom of running away from potential trouble, whenever possible. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the use of physical techniques against another person is a last resort.

The ingenious and creative uses of "magic", music, and comedy make this presentation fun and amusing to watch for both children and adults.

Your kids will love this wonderful video. It teaches children about self-defense without any of the hype or violence we see so much of on TV today. And the characters even sing, too... Great music. I give it two thumbs up! Highly recommended.

God forbid that my tape breaks. For the first time I can leave my children for half an hour and not worry if they are allright. They eaven read the credits. My children used to watch Power Rangers, but it is to violent. Magic of Martial Arts should be made into a serries.

This could have been a good movie. The technical quality is good. Good sound, occasional good music. But the script jumped from one sequence to another, with resolutions coming too quickly and easily. The kids performed okay.

The two-minute music interludes during which the story stopped and we are forced to listen to hard-rock music or rap music are not going to be to everyone's taste. The people who would like this moralistic movie are not likely to care for this music. The people who like rap and rock are going to hate this story. Incompatible audiences again. Director, take note.

The title is misleading. Excalibur was used as a device and Merlin. Otherwise, the movie had nothing to do with the round table or Arthur's time. Don't expect "A Kid in King Arthur's Court" (a good movie except for the casting of the kid).

Bottom line: okay movie if you can get it for $7.00. Don't even think of buying it for $12.99.

Another Haunted House Mystery.......2007-06-21

The East Side Kids are practicing singing for a wedding. The couple plan to move to a house in the suburbs. The previous owners say the house next door is haunted. Emil gives orders to the real estate agent to buy back the house on Elm Street. We see the young bride (Ava Gardner). The old couple call the police to report strange events at 322 Elm Street. The boys show up to clean up for the new couple, but pick the wrong house. They "borrow" the furnishings.

Mr. & Mrs. John Gibson show up at a hotel, and get a message. They get a warning about their house. Then Emil shows up and becomes upset by the presence of the boys. There are jokes about portraits. The boys find a printing press in the cellar with Nazi pamphlets. The policemen upstairs hear nothing! Then the Gibsons show up to live in their new home. The furnishings are gone. Jack Gibson calls the police to report what the boys found. But the printing press has disappeared. Next the press is found in Jack Gibson's house. But the boys direct the police to the right place for a happy ending. [Note Bela Lugosi's sneeze.]

Good comedy entry in Dead End Kids series.......2004-12-22

But the only problem as I see it is there is hardly any even bogus supernatural elwment (despite Dracula--Bela Lugosi--being in it). All the boys do while in the house is hear a few noises and see someone stand in a picture frame. Their first entry with Lugosi (Spooks Run Wild) was a much better entry for the horror-comedy genre. This is a great, entertaining film but it has little to do with horror. Ghost and Mr. Chcken it ain't!

The East Side Kids meet Bela Lugosi again!.......2004-03-20

The East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan, Sammy Morrison, Bobby Stone, Billy Benedict, Stanley Clements) meet Bela Lugosi (Dracula [1931]) again! They met him before as "Nardo" in SPOOKS RUN WILD" (1941). This is the second East Side Kids film William Beaudine has directed since CLANCY STREET BOYS (1943). William Beaudine believes in one takes only if it can be done. It was not rare for an East Side Kid film to be done in six days. Boy did he keep a "one-take" this time! Bela thought he would have some fun. The scene where Bela Lugosi is inside the painting and sneezes the offensive word, "s***", was the first take. So Beaudine left it in the film. The plot this time: Jack (Rick Vallin) is going to marry Betty (Ava Gardner) and they have bought a huge house two miles out in the country from the subway. Later, the agent tells him, the house next door is haunted. Mugg's (Leo Gorcey) gets word that the Katzman's mob (an in-joke to producer, Stan Katzman) will crash the wedding. Bela Lugosi as "Emil" is in town. He doesn't want Jack to have that house on Elm Street. Even Emil's assistant tells him the house next door is haunted. The assistant gives him some cash and a business card to call to close the deal. Of course, he will not. Later, the boys find the card on the floor. The boys decide to decorate Jack's new house , but they go by the number on the card and go to the haunted house instead. They don't know the mistake they made. Watch the fun begin with the boys and Bela Lugosi. This is Bobby Jordan's last appearance with the East Side Kids until BOWERY CHAMPS (1944). Then re-joined them for the Bowery Boys films. The next films in the series: Mr. Muggs Steps Out (1943), MILLION DOLLAR KID (1944).

The East Side Kids/Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys did it again. All your favorite guys are back again for some more fun. If you like Abbott & Costello...The Three Stooges....or The Little Rascals/Our Gang then your going to like these guys. Its fun for the whole family, good viewing you can trust with the kids. Add Bela Lugosi and a little old time spooky fun. Its good to finally see an almost forgotten piece of film history restored thanks to our friend Loyd Kaufman at Troma Studios.

The East Side Kids Meet Bela Lugosi, Again........2000-09-13

Don't be fooled by the title. Ghosts have nothing to do with this movie. This is another encounter of our hapless heroes with the dark master of the poverty row horror film. This time the East Side Kids find Bela and his gang of Nazi spies occupying a local "haunted" house. These little low budget comedies don't pretend to be any more than they are. This film has the added attraction of a very young Ava Gardner in the unlikely role of Huntz Hall's sister. Bela Lugosi had become a low-budget standby at this point in his career. The East Side Kids, if not lovable, are tolerable in small doses. Due to a misunderstanding that is worthy of the Three Stooges, the boys mistake the deserted house for a honeymoon cottage that needs a good cleaning and decorating. The spooky manse has secret panels, revolving bookcases, paintings with moving eyes, and mysterious people creeping around. The mild thrills and chills are suitable for family viewing. There are a few low brow chuckles, but The East Side Kids and Bela Lugosi had better luck with the earlier "Spooks Run Wild," reviewed elsewhere in Amazon.com. Adjust your expectations accordingly. ;-)
