Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
In the same year that he directed a handsome version of The Scarlet Pimpernel for television, Clive Donner also made this worthy 1984 small-screen production of the Dickens tale. George C. Scott can't quite muster a decent English accent, but he does bring some new colors to this movie's interpretation of Scrooge, making the character less nasty for the sake of nastiness and more a product of a life of lovelessness. The supporting cast is first-rate, and the production is far more handsome than most TV fare. --Tom Keogh
Description
Christmas elicits nothing more than "Bah, humbug!" from Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott), a miser whose sole pursuit of financial success has left him a bitter and lonely old man. But a Christmas Eve visit from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future ultimately teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family.

For anyone who views holiday gatherings with equal parts joy and dread, The Family Stone offers plenty of comedy to identify with. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha's slapstick premise begins when Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings his fiancé Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) home to meet his family for Christmas. It's an instant disaster when parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) agree with their gay, deaf son Thad (Ty Giordano, who is actually hearing impaired), pot-smoking son Ben (Luke Wilson) and daughters Amy (Rachel McAdams) and Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser) that Meredith is way too uptight to be welcomed into their family. Meredith recruits her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to help her thaw the Stone family cold front, and after building a solid emotional foundation for his holiday comedy, Bezucha starts to stack the deck with plot developments that, while heartwarming, border on the absurd. You either go with the movie's flow or you don't, and with this appealing cast (featuring some really nice work by Keaton, Nelson, Parker and Danes) it's easy to forgive Bezucha's unlikely blend of yuletide cheer, petty animosities, and romantic tables turned in the blink of an eye. Toss in a case of terminal illness and you've got a sad-happy tearjerker that works in spite of itself. If you don't recognize at least part of your own holiday clan in The Family Stone, you probably haven't been paying attention. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The family Stone.......2007-06-08

This movie has a great cast and is funny and serious at the same time, has a great family story that is typical of todays families that seem to get together only once or twice a year. I have watched it several times already and have enjoy it each time I watch it.

2 out of 5 stars Outrageous.......2007-05-28

With 167 reviews in the can already, I can only say that I really hated this movie. Thankfully, I saw it on DVD and was able to stop whenever I wanted, which was often. The movie was simply overdone to the point of viewer exhaustion. If you have to see it, rent it or catch it on a movie channel. Don't waste your money on this bad flick.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, quirky, unexpectedly touching film.......2007-05-23

Anybody who has a family that is "different" or has had to go through hard times together will appreciate this movie. All of the reviews that spoke about this movie being "unrealistic" should really get a clue. Realistic is very relative (there are some families where the kids go nuts and murder the parents - would that have been more realistic?). I thought the family dynamics in this film were excellent and well-acted.

It is easy to see why the family Stone doesn't like the eldest son's prospective fiance, Meredith (played by SJP to a "T"), because in the beginning she is so, well, unlikeable! Its easy to believe that the family's opinion of Meredith is so heavily influenced by the youngest daughter Amy (played by my favorite actress Rachel McAdams, and anyone who has said, "who is she" should see the amazing movie "The Notebook"), who met Meredith at a prior time and didn't like her. Why? Because how many times has your sister/brother/daughter gone on about a person that they don't like and has made you dislike them? This is because you tend to side with the person, who, DUH, you've known all your life as opposed to someone you've never even met.

Some of the plot lines may have been a bit far-fetched, i.e. the brother falling for his girlfriend's sister and the girlfriend falling for her boyfriend's brother in the matter of a day. But what this really meant to illustrate, is, that a) you never know when you are going to find true love b) you shouldn't walk away from it just because it may not be the perfect timing c)life is too short to spend it with the wrong person. I thought the scene with Meredith's sister Julie (played by Claire Danes who looked beautiful in this movie) and Everett (the oldest son) where she talks about the man with the "hole in his heart" is really a foreshadowing metaphor for Everett, who is with Meredith but is obviously walking around with a big hole in his heart that needs to be filled.

Addressing the terminal illness part - if you watched the movie you know that the mother is dying of breast cancer (DUH for all the people who asked, "what kind of cancer is she even dying from anyway"). The scene that OBVIOUSLY demonstrates that is when she opens her shirt to reveal her mastectomy scar. While some people were offended by that, the fact that she is not ashamed of this disfigurement and that her husband isn't turned off by it just demonstrates the depth of their love for each other. Other reviews have remarked that well, she looked healthy, which I think is just an absurd remark. The movie didn't show her on a treadmill for God's sakes. It even shows her napping in the middle of the day. People are so over-critical. I'm sure nobody wanted to be beat over the head with overwrought scenes of the mother showing how ill she was. Plus she was trying to keep it a secret from her children.

The last scene that I'm going to get on my soapbox about is the Christmas Eve dinner scene. The one where Meredith makes the well-intentioned but cruel remark about the gay son Thad not being "normal" and being "challenged" because of his sexual orientation. People are outraged because they thought the family's reaction to her statement was too mean. And I challenge everyone who thinks that to put themselves in that family's shoes. I have a deaf mother and I am fiercely overprotective of her, even to a fault. Our culture is not friendly to people who are different - everyone knows that. Is it so hard to believe that a close-knit family like the stones would overreact when an outsider criticizes a family member? Especially one that has probably had to deal with more than his share throughout his life?

Sorry for the novel. I just get so irritated when people criticize things without truly thinking it through. This is an excellent movie and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars zero.......2007-05-04

This movie went in the garbage because that is what it was. If you love God , this is not a movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars What a Movie.......2007-04-04

Although marketed to be another awkward comedy like what poor Ben Stiller had to face in Meet the Parents, The Family Stone is anything, but simply eccentric. Yes, the fiance is uptight, grating and at times humorless, but this movie is far less about uncomfortable comedy than about uncomfortable reality. In truth, its an intense drama about life, love, growing up, growing old and facing death with only your family(as dysfunctional as everyone's are)to hold it all back with you. Superb performances from the unconventional cast and Diane Keaton's character is especially nuanced and heart-breaking in her depth and courage.

Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the somber tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humor soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humor and somber drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars "When Love is Gone" Not Gone.......2007-06-18

I watch this film twice a year, at least. I am disappointed about the screen format, but the story and characters are intact. Also intact is the song "When Love is Gone" and I have the 2002 DVD edition. This is a magical movie and all ages will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, but I liked the original cut better .......2007-03-17

Great, great classic movie, but frankly, the full length version of When Love is Gone featured in the uncut version doesn't really fit the spirit of the rest of the movie.

Otherwise, this is definitely a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-03-15

I love the Muppet Movies and the Muppet Christmas Carol is one I can watch again and again and again. Highly recommend for people who enjoy Kermit and Miss Piggy.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Version of the Classic Story!!!!.......2007-02-21

This version of A Christmas Carol is heartfelt, emotional, and so draws the viewer in that you will forget you are watching Muppets! The music is fantastic and Michael Caine is the most convincing Scrooge you will ever see! I love this move. :)

5 out of 5 stars Classic relived.......2007-02-20

This is a classic movie, a beloved memory from my childhood. Dicken's genius plot is united with the adored muppets cast. It's a great movie that I'm excited to have in my collection. The film and sound quality are great, the only thing that I am disappointed in is the deletion of the "when love is gone" scene from the wide screen edition. All in all, this is a great movie that everyone (child and adult) should have in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars "A DVD to Remember".......2007-06-18

This DVD has Pluto's Christmas Tree with those lovable chipmunks, Chip 'n' Dale. It also has Mickey's Christmas Carol which I remember watching every year on television growing up in the eighties. This DVD is worth it for those two alone. I have not seen The Small One. What would have made this perfect is if they would have also included the short where Donald is aggravated by his nephews and so a snow fight ensues (forget the actual name of the short). I remember they would air this one on tv as well right before Mickey's Christmas Carol to fill up the entire hour time slot. Still, this release is a must-have for anyone who grew up with these fond memories as a child. Just the music and singing in Mickey's Christmas Carol is enough to warm my heart.

5 out of 5 stars I bought it for ONE reason only.......2007-02-28

I have two favorite Christmas Specials from when I was young - 1) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated short, not the Jim Carrey movie) and 2) Mickey's Christmas Carol.

The Grinch is still shown (usually) each year, but it's been a number of years since I'd seen Mickey's Christmas Carol and I had to have it. Yes, it's the same old Dicken's story, but there are some CLASSIC moments (Goofy as Marley saying Scrooge will be visited by 3 ghosts but he's only holding up 2 fingers).

One of my favorite versions of the Dicken's classic.

5 out of 5 stars I JUST LOVE IT.......2007-02-01

This is the desert-island choice of the many versions of A Christmas Carol, with a magnificent, full-bodied portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge by Alastair Sim that leaves everyone else in the dust. Lean and direct, this film's version of the story wastes no time trying to impress viewers with the magical nature of the spirits' visitations. Director Brian Desmond Hurst keeps the focus on Scrooge's life story, beautifully simplifying and underscoring the theme of lost women with a haunting musical refrain from the folk song "Barbara Allen." Sim's commitment to the role is at times astonishing; his Scrooge's Christmas-morning ecstasy is a marvel of giddy technique. Watch for Patrick Macnee (Steed in The Avengers) as the young Jacob Marley--the actor made his screen debut in this 1951 production. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sim IS Scrooge!!.......2007-06-29

A lot of men have played Ebenezer Scrooge over the years, but NONE with the accuracy, passion and believability of Alastair Sim... This man simple BECAME Scrooge! All performances from then on were merely attempts to capture the magic he captured in this brilliant adaptation of the classic Christmas tale.

(Okay so maybe Michael Caine in the MUPPET VERSION but I digress...)

This story remains a classic... and the original version with Alastair Sim is one to be enjoyed by generations.

My dad enjoyed it as a child. I enjoyed it as a child and now my son enjoys it... A tradition in the truest sense.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol (50th Anniversary Edition).......2007-06-28

Absolutely the BEST version ever! Alastair Sim IS the best Scrooge ever!

Christmas Eve is not the same without this movie playing at least once in the family room. We have watched this since I was a child and hoped to for many more years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol (1951).......2007-06-25

Based on Charles Dickens's most widely read and enduring story, this definitive 1951 British version, better known as "Scrooge," outdoes all others for atmosphere and, of course, characterization. The incomparable Alastair Sim, a gifted actor who seamlessly inhabits his role, makes you believe he is Scrooge. Skillfully directed by Brian Desmond-Hurst, "Carol" is tight at roughly eighty-five minutes, yet remains extremely moving, with Sim's droopy eyes projecting all of Scrooge's terror, shame, and regret. By contrast, his outright giddiness at the film's conclusion will leave you feeling just the same way--very much in the holiday spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art with a little extra.......2007-05-28

Clearly the best version I have ever seen.It has been a family tradition for all of the family to sit and enjoy this classic. Before VCR came along I always searched the T.V guide to be sure it was being aired on Christmas eve.

One little tidbit, when Scrooge is joyfully romping around the bedroom on Christmas morning,he is looking in a mirror. If you look closley you will see the director in the mirror as well in both scenes.

5 out of 5 stars THE Standard..........2007-04-22

1951's British version of "A Christmas Carol" is perhaps the standard movie edition of the popular Charles Dickens classic. Delivered in crisp black and white, with its focus on the original story and not on special effects, it delivers the haunting message of Dickens' novella in a way that the many subsequent versions do not.

Alistair Sims is superb as Scrooge, easily and believably making the transition from grasping miser to a reformed man of Christmas spirit. We see Ebenezer rise from neglected schoolboy to poor but generous clerk to rich and ambitious businessman to stingy miser before confronting the three Christmas Spirits who change his life. His transformation is delivered with obvious physical joy, as he capers like a schoolboy and humbles himself to visit his disowned nephew.

Brian Hurst's direction is direct and brisk, as an excellent cast steps through the story in just 86 minutes, without missing a single key element. The Bob Crachitt family is especially well-cast, their sequences together fairly hum with genuine family feeling.

Unlike many of the later versions, this production makes the point that Ebenezer Scrooge must be frightened into good sense by the three ghosts, not entertained by them. At the same time, the ghosts are presented as the ultimately humane spirits they must be to give Scrooge hope for redemption.

This movie is highly recommended to fans of a great Christmas classic and those looking for a Christmas movie that imparts a real message.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Classic Renewed.......2007-06-27

This is one of the "classic" Christmas movies that I watch every year. I think George C. Scott did a marvelous job as Ebenezer Scrooge in this movie and I like the updated look of the movie. I have 3 versions of this movie and like them all, but I think this is my favorite because of the way it was filmed. It always leaves me wanting to watch it again.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-04-22

It is very, very hard for a movie to find it's way onto my A List, so I was suprised and thrilled at how this one swept me away. Great acting, powerful message, good filming and music -- all in all, perfectly enchanting. The creepy parts really ARE creepy, make no mistake, which is good because Scrooge's frightened reactions would be melodramatic otherwise. I was touched the most by Tiny Tim, and the wretched little Ignorance and Want. I cried when the Spirit of Christmas present showed them to Scrooge, and was so inspired by the whole story that that night I got out of bed to write a poem about unfortunate children. What can I say? BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars my all time favorite Christmas movie.......2007-04-01

I absolutely love this movie...George C Scott is the best and I recommend this for everyone who loves to watch Christmas movies!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Minnesota Charlie.......2007-03-21

A classic movie that the whole family enjoys. Most holidays the movie is played every Christmas season without fail until recently. Maybe our family it to busy in the evening and we missed the night it was broadcasted. Anyway, now we have the movie and we can watch it at our convenience during the Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars This has become a Holiday tradition for me.......2007-03-09

When I first saw the advertisement of `A Christmas Carol' staring George C. Scott on TV I thought of General Patton as Scrooge. I was very cynical towards the movie at first. Don't get me wrong. George C. Scott was a brilliant actor, but I could not picture him as Scrooge. I was totally blown away by his portrayal of Scrooge. He brought a certain level to the character others did not. The movie is fun to watch, and a great Holiday classic. Your family will enjoy watching this time and time again. To me, this is the best interpretation of Dickens book I have seen.

Most critics couldn't get behind Bill Murray's modern retelling of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, finding it too unfocused at times and not nearly wicked enough. Still, if you're a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world's meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray's edgy portrayal. --Marshall Fine

Standing out in the crowded field of screen adaptations of the classic Dickens novel A Christmas Carol is hard to do, but this version pulls it off. When a transparent Jacob Marley walks through Ebenezer Scrooge's apartment door, you know you're seeing something both timeless and contemporary. Other strategically placed special effects--a funnel cloud that transports Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas present, the hollow specter of Christmas future--keep you riveted without slipping into anachronism.

But, as good as the technology is, the performances are what really power this 93-minute TNT interpretation. Patrick Stewart brings a depth to Scrooge that allows the character to go beyond the cartoonish qualities that have made him a Christmas mainstay. That doesn't mean he's any less heartless with his hapless employee Bob Cratchit (Richard E. Grant) or any less dismissive of his well-meaning nephew. A frail-looking Joel Grey makes an excellent ghost of Christmas past, and a superb British cast ably fill the remaining roles.

Director David Jones, shooting on location in England and at London's Ealing Studios, has achieved a balance of science and sentiment that will help this version hold up for many years to come. --Kimberly Heinrichs

3 out of 5 stars Too Young For Scrooge.......2007-02-21

Patrick Stewart is just not a very good choice for a Scrooge role.He was a bit too young and I just cannot invision a bald Scrooge. You would be much better off with the Robert C Scott version it was great.Alot more believable and I think Stewart should stick to roles like he has had in the past like Star Trek.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a new production that doesn't ruin a classic!.......2007-01-25

Each Christmas season I make it a point to see as many version of 'A Christmas Carol' as I can. It really is a timeless story which I continue to appreciate more. Having said that, some of the newer versions and adaptations are awful. Patrick Stewart gives a wonderful performance as Scrooge, and the rest of the cast fit into their roles fluidly. I've seen a stage production of `A Christmas Carol' as well, and this movie version comes closest to bringing that personal feel to the story. If you're only going to own one version, then perhaps pickup the Alastair Sim classic. However, this would be a great complement and would probably draw more interest from the kids.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol Patrick Stewart.......2007-01-22

I think this is the best of the Christmas Carol movies I have seen. It is very true to the book, carries the English accent, and Scrooge is played to perfection. I am a gifted facilitator for middle school students. The 6th grade reads and watches one of the simplified versions, but the 7th grade studies the writing of Dickens and his background. We study his style and why he chose this style. This movie version is perfect for the final phase of studying Charles Dickens and his writings.

5 out of 5 stars A Holiday tradition.......2007-01-20

This is Dickens at his finest! Great costumes, wonderful sets, superior art direction and the casting is absolutely brilliant. While "It's a Wonderful Life" may have become de rigeur holiday viewing, and Billingsley's "A Christmas Story" will get the whole family laughing, this version of "A Christmas Carol" is a superb piece of film-making, as well as a timeless reminder of what is important about the holiday.

The Holiday Heart-Warmer Like You've Never Seen - Or Heard - Before!

Kelsey Grammer brings Ebenezer Scrooge to life in this musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic tale.

A musical setting for Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a natural, and this holiday TV-movie (based on the Broadway version) generously crams music into its quick spin through the venerable story. Kelsey Grammer uses his musical pipes (and some of his "master thespian" style of acting) as Ebenezer Scrooge, the man whose miserliness needs no introduction here. There's some experienced musical-comedy talent in the cast, from small roles to large, with expert stuff from Jesse L. Martin (who was in Rent, the Broadway musical, before he joined the Law & Order team) as the ghost of Christmas Present and Jane Krakowski as the ghost of Christmas Past. Jason Alexander, another TV person with a background in stage musicals, does deftly as the chain-rattling Jacob Marley's ghost (and his number is one of the most tuneful of the mixed bag of songs). Alan Menken, the veteran tunesmith of Beauty and the Beast fame, contributes the music, with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime); the bigger numbers are spirited but a little rote. (The Styne-Merrill songs from a wackier version of the story, Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, are a more memorable bunch.) This version moves so quickly across the main points of the story that Scrooge's redemption feels a tad rushed, but maybe the songs are supposed to be the point. Still, the razzle-berry dressing is missed. --Robert Horton

    4 out of 5 stars A beautiful retelling of a favorite classic!.......2007-01-30

Out of all of the movies made to tell the age old story of Charles Dickens', "A Christmas Carol" this is my favorite hands down. The music makes this movie a stunning and sheer delight. Kelsey Grammer & Jennifer Love Hewitt both star and give a wonderful performace. You and your family won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of an age old classic!.......2007-01-15

I have been a Christmas Carol fan since my childhood - anytime of year& any version - I love the story. I stumbled onto this version one night on TV and fell in love with it. If you enjoy musicals you will enjoy this one. The lyrics are great and the cast is fun - you will recognize everyone from your favorite TV shows. The performances are excellent.

This is an outstanding movie presentation of the Broadway play. It is a must have for every family who believes their next year can be better!! It is also a must have for everyone who has little access and great passion for Broadway musicals!!

It was the classic story, with some really great singers. Jesse Martin was great. I loved it and so did my kids.

My husband and I saw this movie when it aired on the TV a couple of years ago. We were so excited when we found it. It's great. My six year old daughter even loved it. The music is wonderful. Over all a great movie very well done.
