The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an upcoming party. It's all in the name of fun, and while Seuss's classic rhymes are relegated to voice-over narration, director Bo Welch capitalizes on his background as one of Hollywood's most gifted production designers (with credits including Edward Scissorhands and Men in Black), turning the Seussian town of "Anville" into a playful pastiche of pastels. As played by Mike Myers under layers of fur and latex, Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat is mayhem personified, and the movie suffers from his anything-goes approach to getting a laugh. And though Myers delivers a few laughs while channeling voices from his own comedic repertoire (including "Coffee Talk" maven Linda Richman), a little of this Cat goes a long way, and he nearly wears out his welcome. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Belongs in a Litter-Box!.......2007-04-04

When I watched this stinker, I felt like sniffing it and covering it up.
This is just another attempt to cash in on nostalgia. Obviously the producers of the film were aiming at parents fond memories of the Dr. Seuss classic childrens book and tried to exploit it into an updated version. It fails miserably. It is another example of Hollywood dumping tons of money on the look of a movie instead of the script. Dont get me wrong, this movie looks great. It has awesome costumes and set design but the problem is, it seems like they whipped the screenplay out in 20 minutes. Even the kids think this movie stinks.
Do your child a favor, avoid this film and instead sit down and read your child the original book. They will appreciate it way more.

I don't know why people are so negative about this movie. My family and I think it is hilarious! It's a great movie for kids and adults. It also follows in the lines of the book. My whole family stops what they're doing to watch this movie when I put it on. It's one of the few "older kid movies" that my younger brother will watch. This is an awsome movie for anyone!

I really disagree with those rating this movie poorly. My kids and I really love it! It is such a hoot to watch it again. The kids were watching it in the car on our way home the other day and I was cracking up just listening to the snappy one-liners. It is full-on fun from start to finish and I think any movie that delivers this is truly a worthwhile watch. We sure need some relief from all of the doom and gloom in the world. If you want some relief too, give it a watch. You'll be in stitches!

2 out of 5 stars Completely unoriginal........2006-06-14

This episode is compeletly unoriginal like I said above. I can't imagine why the makers of this episode would do what they did which is delete almost everything in the real book and replace it with a completely dumb storyline. I didn't enjoy it one bit. I watch it hoping for a really funny (and faithful) version of Dr. Suess's classic. I was wrong. The songs are good and you might like the new story, but even then, I don't think the new story is good. Not at all.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss - The Cat in the Hat (Original).......2005-09-09

I saw this movie once or twice as a child, but always remembered it. I bought it for my 3 year old and he loves it. He enjoys the songs and already loved the story. I highly recommend this because it is simple and positive, silly fun.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than the Movie!.......2004-08-11

Now I have to admit that this story version is a whole lot better than the vulgar movie version. This has such great songs that are very unforgettable. Even though the fish was quite a grouch it was similar to the great book. It is very entertaining and timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Our Family Loves This Version!.......2004-03-13

I don't recall ever seeing this version of the animated Cat in the Hat before, even though I was a kid who watched television faithfully in 1971, when this first aired on network television. My husband bought the video at a neighborhood garage sale last fall for $1 - what a bargain! The animation is very 1960's, combining both Dr. Seuss-ish artwork and a Chuck Jones/dePatie-Freleng style that seems at once very familiar, and yet, is now considered very oldtimey.
My 2-1/2 year old loves the songs. She asks for the video by demanding to watch "Chat Chapeau," the French names for cat and hat which the cat sings about in the wackiest song on the video, where he recites his name in about ninety gazillion languages. I personally love hearing Thing 1 and Thing 2 sing in those ridiculously deep voices about the "killjoy fish" who doesn't like fun and doesn't want to fly kites in the house. And since my parents used to play Allan Sherman records, I love hearing his authoritative voice, as the Cat, reciting the most nonsensical stuff.
Even though the video departs from the book in major ways, I don't mind because Dr. Seuss himself was involved in this production. I figure this made-for-TV version gave him a new opportunity to create additional riffs and plays on words to his own classic book.

4 out of 5 stars The REAL Thing!.......2003-12-02

This is the original CBS TV special from 1971. How old was I? 1 year old but thankfully there was always reruns and yes, this is the one from my childhood.

After spending $5 to see a horrible parody of the book (ie: the Movie) I decided I might as well spend $12 to have the real deal. Well here it is, on DVD.

The TV show is just as I remember it. The songs, the animation, everything is true to the book.

My biggest complaint is about the stupid trailers you have to watch before you can see the cat. You insert the DVD and you gotta see previews for Casper, Babe, and Sinbad. To make things worse, you can NOT press menu or even "stop". I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for the previews.

1 out of 5 stars unengaging.......2006-10-29

It takes a lot of tallent to make Dr. Seuss boring. The makers of this DVD somehow managed. There are lots of videos from the 1960s and 70s that have fully animated musical adaptations of Dr. Seuss stories with scripts and lyrics by Ted Geisel himself. My daughter loves them. Actually, so do I. This one, however, was so unappealing we both wanted to turn it off.

1 out of 5 stars A massive dissapointment.......2006-10-24

Somehow, I thought I remembered most of the Dr. Seuss stories being interesting animations from the 1960s, when I was a child. However, I now realize that only a few proper animations were created (like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas). This DVD is an overpriced, underproduced waste of time. It is merely the illustrations from the books brought to life - poorly. The movements are jerky and silly, the voiceovers are embarassing, and it captures my 3 year old twins imagination about as much as a blank screen. They LOVE the equivalent books, and we read them constantly. They are NOT interested in these amateurish renderings (which at times look like cut and paste silliness like Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame). If a three year old can tell the difference, then you will too. Even though the animation is limited, in the "Ken Burns" style or worse, the DVD compression is lousy with tons of visible artifacts all over the images. Do yourself and your kids a favor and buy the real books. Random House and Sony Wonder - whose logos introduce these productions - should be ashamed to market such inferior nonsense.

4 out of 5 stars Great book on video.......2006-04-30

This is truly a book on video, and if that is what you want than you'll be pleased. It follows the text of the book and the "animation" is pictures from the book mildly animated. My son adores this video and it added to his love of books and his love of Dr. Seuss. He is 4 1/2 and clamors to read Dr. Seuss books daily. However, the video is also a nice addition to our reading time. And in the past, it held my 2 yr old's attention better than the book alone. Now as he matures he sits well for books also.

5 out of 5 stars Read along---helps learning to read.......2004-05-17

I object to the reviewer who labelled this as "for parents who don't have time to read to their kids." You sit down with the kids and help them follow along in the book. When they're older they can follow along by themselves. You can use this in addition to reading to them. If you're going to stick your kid in front of the TV, wouldn't you like them to pick up a book?

5 out of 5 stars Totally Dr. Seuss.......2003-06-24

Anyone who is familiar with the Dr. Seuss series of Videos and DVDs knows that they are not attempting to be animation. While Chuck Jones turned the classic Grinch into the very pleasing, bugs bunny style cartoon, which has survived the test of time in its own right, this series holds true to the creator's original vision. Don't expect a cartoon, expect a Dr. Seuss book!

Amazon.com

Geared toward younger viewers, this Beginner Book Video is a static, nonmusical version of the classic Dr. Seuss tale The Cat in the Hat (1957). It should not be confused with the 1972 TV special. While actors voice original narration and dialogue, original illustrations are brought to life via cutouts, with the result that there is some activity, but characters' lips don't move when they speak. School-aged children and adults may find the effect off-putting. (On the plus side, the Cat in the Hat is voiced by the Late Show's Alan Kalter.) The second story, Maybe You Should Fly a Jet! Maybe You Should Be a Vet! (1980), was written by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) under the pseudonym Theo. LeSieg, and is animated in the same fashion. Dr. Seuss did not illustrate the original story. As in the Beginner Book original, Michael J. Smollin is credited with the artwork. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Classic Seuss.......2007-07-04

My children's children are enjoying the same Seuss poetry we read at least 30 years ago. Thank you Amazondotcom for offering very reasonable and reliable books for children!

5 out of 5 stars Always a Favorite.......2007-05-30

This is a timeless classic. It was both my daughters' favorite book and I couldn't wait to get a copy for my new baby boy. There's just something about the rhyming words that holds their attention. You can't go wrong with this book.

5 out of 5 stars 50 years and still a classic.......2007-05-23

What can one say about The Cat in the Hat that hasn't already been said? It's doubtful there is anyone anywhere in the US that hasn't heard of Dr. Seuss or his most famous of books The Cat in the Hat. Suffice to say this book was a classic when it was written and it remains a classic today, some fifty years later.

What you may not know about Dr. Seuss is that the good doctor was really a gentleman named Theodor Seuss Geisel. Mr. Geisel began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920s. As his work evolved, he became known for his intriguing perspectives and fresh concepts. His works moved from basic cartooning to deft illustrations, sculptures and oil paintings that showcased his elaborate imagination. He had a unique artistic vision, and his artwork became the platform from which he delivered dozens of children's books, hundreds of political cartoons, hundreds of advertisements, and many editorials filled with wonderfully inventive animals, characters and clever humor.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Elvis - Dr Seuss is King.......2007-05-15

Everyone knows this one, yes? Well, I actually didn't until maybe 6 months ago. This book is KING at bedtime and has kept my daughter's interest for longer than expected - especially for a 2 year old. All the Dr Seuss books are engaging and fantastic for developing language skills and a love for books.

2 out of 5 stars chills you to the bone.......2007-05-14

I confess I was deeply disturbed by Seuss's parable, which pits the soul-crushing wickedness of a Satanic character ("Cat") against the unspoiled innocence and naivety of two suburban children.

Things come to a head when "Cat" seems on the point of morally subverting the universe itself, in a series of feats so nihilistic that the children are reducing to little more than blubbering idiots.

True, "Cat," in a whimsy, stays his paw at the end. But I can't help wondering if the children were so harrowed by the experience that they were ever after unable to return to the bright world above.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Re-mastered, but not restored!.......2003-12-03

The case boasts of the shows being re-mastered, but there are streaks in the backgrounds from negative fading.
These are the later 1980's Depatie-Freling TV specials, not the classic Chuck Jones cartoons. (The Jones toons are issued by Warner Brothers). They have their creative moments, but much of the time they feel like cheap imitations of Dr. Seuss.
The Hoober-Bloob Highway is the superior of the two shorts.

Why only two 22 minute shorts? Universal could have gotten all four of their Dr. Seuss DVD releases on one DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Continuation.......2003-10-21

What I am writing is a continuation of my last review. I actually have seen The Hoober-Bloob Highway" and just did not take in the name of this cartoon while seeing it on television. I am giving it four stars up since I did not find it quite as enjoyable as "The Grinch Grinches The Cat In The Hat." Anyway, the cartoon deals a man in space who has taken the place of stalks (that myhtical baby delivery method) so he can help them make decisions about how to begin and live through their earthly lives before sending them down there along his hoober-bloob highway. However, you will only see him dealing with one particular baby whom he tries to advise with a great deal of trouble while showing it some films of what might occur on earth. He even ends up giving the baby boy the option of not going down to earth. The production is not necessarily adventurous since it involves decision-making rather than physical struggles.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Change.......2003-10-15

Unlike the "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Grinch Night," this production has the grinch living in a house, owning a car, and not near Whoville. He still has his dog Max but again receives slight changes to his voice and appearance. While the first story has him disguising himself as Santa Clause and the second one has him using two forms of magic, this story involves him inventing two diabolical machines. Of course he also lives not too far away from the cat in the hat.

The grinch first appears to be unusually nice but is later reminded to retain his mean grinch ways by his reflection. The cat in the hat experiences trouble from him after the two characters meet. As a result of continual trouble from the grinch's machines he (the cat in the hat) seeks out try and find a way to change the grinch. However, the grinch causes him to crash his car on the way and end up inside a restaurant in a town where the trouble is also brought upon everyone there as well. This is a must-see production.

Unfortunatle, I have not presently seen "The Hoober-Bloob Highway" and, therefore, can not give any details.

3 out of 5 stars Really, Dr. Seuss wanted to entertain kids, not adults or teens........2005-12-26

I know that some adults and teens really like the cartoons, but for me, not really. My 16 sister, Pamela (who is autistic) loves the cartoons on DVD, but I do rather not want to watch them with her (unless she forces me to). Well, since Hollywood has deranged Dr. Seuss's books, these series are the only choices for the time being. If I had a choice inwhich I would pick the Hollywood series (Cat in the Hat, Grinch) and the cartoons, I would pick the cartoons. If you have a kid who loves Seuss, then you should buy it, but parents, be warned: the cute characters sing like they had enough to drink! If you can, listen to your iPod unless you really love Seuss toons. Still, I have to admit that the cartoon characters are cute and the words they speak are better than having the Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers) say "Son of a [beep]!"

"hmmm... upgrades." The matrix reloaded.

1 out of 5 stars Stupid pack peaple.......2005-04-26

First of all
A. Packs are idiots disguised for money.
B. this is no goody, the two movies are bad.

The cat says "Son of b*****" in this movie.
something everyone should know is this is bad.

3 out of 5 stars I JUST want to buy the GRINCH.......2005-04-12

I'm a pack guy. I buy movies in a
pack. I loved the grinch, but
not the cat in the hat, I'd buy
the Grinch without this pack,
but I guess its hard to break
once you're addicted. Maybe I
should stop buying packs....

"Ogres have layers"

1 out of 5 stars GOOD GOLLY!!!!.......2005-04-11

I agree that there should be a extra disk, these two movies
are horrible. I'm 12 and I love Dr.Suess, BUT, these movies make him look like a guy in
war thats naked. And the worse news of all
is... Sniff.... Horton hears a who is coming from the guys who did ROBOTS. I hated Robots. This
is probably the worst thing
next to the The master of Duisguise. Don't buy.
Here are Pro and cons:
Pros:Jim carrey as Grinch nice choice
Nothings better than Mike myers being DUMB.
Cons: Theres nothing good about these movies and are not like
the book at all.
Whos jeffrey tambor?
Robots was entirley bad, Horton might as well be bad too.
spencer brislen is the worst acctor ever!!!

There are my PROS and CONS. Read a book, or, watch Rugrats
and not this.

P.S. Titanics 4-disk set sounds much better.

3 out of 5 stars {Nothing} good or bad about it........2005-04-09

I'h liked the grinch, but not The cat in the hat whcich was
2/5 for me. How can I buy this if its only on AMAZON.I liked Mike myers in The cat in the hat, but everything else is like Charlie brown- is kissing the little red haired girl. {Charlie brown- funny, dork, baseball couch, in comic strip Peanuts.}
I guess Jim is not in OVER THE HEDGE. Whats this world coming to??! Anyway, they are both nice movies and the set is a 3.66*'s
from me. P.S. The cat in the hat is dead, isn't it?

4 out of 5 stars V ery Funny........2007-01-28

I loved this movie. The one liners are so funny. Mike Myers is over the top as the cat. If you like Mr.Myers you will like this movie, if not don't bother watching it cause you will not get the jokes.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great movie!!.......2007-01-18

I don't know why people are so negative about this movie. My family and I think it is hilarious! It's a great movie for kids and adults. It also follows in the lines of the book. My whole family stops what they're doing to watch this movie when I put it on. It's one of the few "older kid movies" that my younger brother will watch. This is an awsome movie for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-01-05

great movie my son' laughs the whole time he's watching it

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot!.......2006-12-18

I really disagree with those rating this movie poorly. My kids and I really love it! It is such a hoot to watch it again. The kids were watching it in the car on our way home the other day and I was cracking up just listening to the snappy one-liners. It is full-on fun from start to finish and I think any movie that delivers this is truly a worthwhile watch. We sure need some relief from all of the doom and gloom in the world. If you want some relief too, give it a watch. You'll be in stitches!
