Research shows that during the early years, a child's brain is wired to absorb the syntax, sentence structure, and dialect of a second language. Based on the concept of total language immersion, Brainy Baby: Spanish is a commendable tool for those seeking bilingual enrichment for their youngsters. Only Spanish is spoken through 45 minutes of instruction and live-action footage that covers familiar objects, colors, numbers, and phrases. While there are several bilingual videos on the market by notable companies, this one stands out for its superb sound and picture quality, lively footage, and extra DVD features such as a Spanish nursery rhyme, interactive story, and (when kids need a break from language lessons) entertaining bloopers. While not meant to be a child's sole source of bilingual instruction, it's a worthy tool, especially if adults can reinforce the lessons throughout the child's day. The instruction is solid, the picture quality superb, and the interspersed frivolity reminds us that captivating kids is the ultimate goal of education. (Ages 2 to 5) --Lynn Gibson

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-04-25

My kids like this video, I don't love it, but it keeps them entertained for a short time. I do think Brainy Baby could have done a higher quality level of production for all their success.

5 out of 5 stars Gifts.......2007-04-10

I have bought this DVD twice as gifts for a baby. The first time was for my Godson. He loved it, and started picking up words. Some of the words are not the same ones that we use but that's minor. The second time I bought it was for a friend for her baby's 1st birthday. Both the mother and the baby loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool.......2007-01-07

GREAT video for teaching your child the most common Spanish words. My daughter also loves "Brainy Baby - English". My only wish is that the company would have one video with the option of choosing which language you want to hear it in just as the Baby Einstein series does. Both Brainy Baby videos (English and Spanish) show the exact same footage but just with a different language. The company is out to get our money by getting us to buy two videos instead of one on the same topic - common words. Shame on them!

2 out of 5 stars Baby loves....123 Cuéntame un cuento.......2006-12-19

We are a hispanic family living in the US. When my baby was born, I received this DVD as a present, together with another one called 123 Cuéntame un cuento. My baby likes Brany Baby... but he LOVES 123 Cuéntame un Cuento. 123 Cuentame un Cuento

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY EXCELLENT IN ALL WAYS.......2006-10-31

This DVD is totally excellent. FInally, I found a DVD that knows that you need to teach things on a gradient. Plus give the english for the word to avoid confusion. Plus give lots of pictures.

This DVD is not just for babies, it's for everyone, because that's how we all learn.

BUT I have a BIG problem with it - I went to order the 'rest of the series' and am dumbfounded that there is only one disk!!!! I was hoping to buy at least 5 and probably 10 more similar ones, each one building on the previous one, so that my husband and I can learn, as well as our children!

I recommend that Brainy Baby market this as for adults as well as children.

When will No. 2 be ready please?

Learning to count to 20 is fun when the basics are introduced through familiar objects, bright animation, enthusiastic narrators, and energetic kids. Created by early childhood specialists, this Brainy Baby presentation showcases each number from 1 to 20, much like the number of the day in a typical Sesame Street episode. Adult and child narrators count a variety of familiar items, from goldfish crackers to crayons, while on-screen numbers provide visual reinforcement. Several "let's count" segments offer opportunities to practice counting and the "how many" section introduces pre-addition skills by counting objects first by color and then all together. While the program may seem unduly repetitive to adults and older children, it is precisely that repetition that promotes cognitive learning in children ages 2 to 4. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Watch numbers! Watch numbers!.......2007-04-04

My 2-year old loves this, and is always asking to "Watch numbers! Watch numbers!" However he is pretty obsessed with visual symbols in general, so your mileage may vary.

After some initial filler which you will probably want to skip past, the program goes through the numbers from 1 to 20 in order. For number n, the format is to display several collections of n objects on the screen and count them in various cute ways. For example, 10 unlit candles will appear on the screen, and then these will be lit one by one, while a voice says "one, two, three ..." You get the idea.

After the number 5, there is a short break to review the numbers from 1 to 5 and to do a tiny bit of addition and subtraction. After the number 10, there is a longer break including a music video of counting to 20 on one's fingers and toes.

I think that as the numbers get into the teens, the program starts to lose interest. Counting 17 objects gets a bit tedious, and when they are scattered randomly on the screen it is sometimes hard to keep track of which ones you have already counted. In any case, there is 20-30 minutes of good, possibly educational entertainment here.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't Keep Interest.......2006-12-28

I bought this for my daughter when she was a toddler. She liked it until about number 11 then would lose interest, even after several times watching. She loved the bloopers and would want me to play that section over and over. Good for entertaining a child for a brief period but I am not sure she really learned counting from watching this.

5 out of 5 stars Repetition and Catchy Tunes!.......2005-05-31

I bought this for my daughter's first birthday (and for my 26 month old to enjoy as well). As you can imagine during the birthday party all the kids were running around, yelling, playing, etc.. Well, I popped this video in for some down time, and as soon as it started playing all the kids stopped what they were doing and became afixed to the TV. My husband came out of the kitchen asking what was going on, why was it so quiet. Since than, my kids have watched it several times and my son is now able to count to twenty! THANK YOU-THANK YOU-THANK YOU!!!

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good job teaching numbers 1 to 20.......2005-04-28

Let me start by saying that I didn't know that many of the Brainy Baby (BB) videos were almost exact repeats (with a bit more animation and extra things added) as Baby's First Impressions (BFI) videos. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought several of each. BFI Numbers is ok, but I think BB 123's is better. There is more computer animation and the graphics are better. BB counts up to 20 whereas BFI really only goes to 10 (they do recite the numbers up to 20 one time). There is no reason to have both. BB has a more counting (BFI often shows 3 of something and just says "3", while BB shows 3 things and has more counting in order; "1,2,3".

For the number 3, BB says:

"Three"
"1,2,3. 3 cups."
"1,2,3. 3 pompoms."
"1,2,3. 3 cookies."
a child then says, "Three"
"1,2,3" (this is said when 3 tops are spinning)
"3 apes" (3 toy apes are shown)
"1,2,3. 3 white mice"

After about 5 numbers there is a review of about 3 numbers (I think they could have reviewed all of them maybe in a mixed up order). They will say, "how many candles do you see?", "can you count the boots?", etc.

I was happy to see that BB kept my favorite part of BFI #'s and that was the jelly beans. You'll see the screen covered in colorful jelly beans and numbers are drawn in the candy.

BB also adds a touch of addition and subtraction. Example: "How many blue frogs? How many red frogs? How many all together?" "Look. Five jacks. Let's take one away. Now there are four."

They have a counting song about counting on your fingers but, honestly, it's not the greatest song or singing voice. At the beginning and the end of this video they have these square foam number puzzle pieces floating in a pool. They are all attatched like a big checkerboard but some of the numbers (like some of the 5's) are upside down. I really don't understand why they did that. Because of these few negative things I can't give it 5 stars. Please read more of my reviews.

5 out of 5 stars school teacher and mom of 3.......2004-04-02

We LOVE this video and with three kids in the house someone is asking to watch it everyday! I don't mind because it is happy and makes you want to get up and dance. Within a week our kids were racing to get to see who could get to 20 first and that is great because other videos stop at 10. This concept has also laid the ground work for showing how higher numbers are 'put together'-How awesome is that?! Because 123's has been such a success we went out and got the ABC's video-thanks Brainy Baby!

Mastering the alphabet involves much more than recognizing capital letters. Brainy Baby: ABC's offers a healthy dose of phonics and lowercase letter study as well, treating 2- to 5-year-olds to a lesson that proves equally entertaining and educational. The key to this delightful show's appeal stems from an engaging, interactive approach to learning. Vocally introducing each uppercase and lowercase letter pair, sharing each letter's sound (or sounds, as in the case of vowels and certain consonants), and showing examples of words beginning with each letter, a friendly narrator encourages viewers to repeat what they see and hear. Throughout the 40-minute program, playful review sessions help enforce each lesson. Upbeat music and exceptional camera work add to the package, making yet another positive contribution from the award-winning Brainy Baby Company. Favorite extras on the DVD version include a video sing-along and a read-along storybook narrated by a child. -- Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT EDUCATIONAL DVD.......2007-04-15

I am so thankful to these reviews. They help so much in determining if a product is right for us. After reading all the reviews, I decided to purchase this DVD for our 20 month old son. He had been watching The Letter Factory (which is great) and I wanted to offer him something new. At first, I was worried, as he wanted to watch The Letter Factory, but after sitting through the DVD with him ONCE, from then on, he has been very interested in watching the video. I like it because it's not all hyper. It's taught in a relaxed calm method. No regrets. I LOVE the way they repeat over and over the sounds of the letters. It's an excellent video for learnig the alphabet and letter sounds. A++++ We bought ours directly from Brainy Baby. We didn't want to wait. We received our order within a week.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning tool.......2007-01-25

If your gonna let your kids watch TV atleast let it be educational. It's a great video. I'm sure it reinforced my son in learning his ABC's.

5 out of 5 stars Great ABC Video.......2007-01-04

My 2 1/2 y.o. loves this video and asks for it often. He now knows all his letters and I believe this video has really helped.

4 out of 5 stars May not be perfect, but my [...] is finally learning to talk........2006-08-25

I agree with most of the other reviewers regarding MOM OF MANY MUNCHKINS review. She was way too critical! For hating the dvd so much, she has it memorized. She is correct about the "uh" sound, but my son has started talking so much since we got this dvd from our local library. He has even started saying complete sentances! Brainy Baby may not be perfect, but they are obviously doing something right. He also watches it from beginning to end without getting bored, and even giggles when the babies giggle. It is very cute! I think they did a great job. We have to remember that this video was made for babies and toddlers, not grown up adults.

4 out of 5 stars My TWO year old knows his letters, but he's learning the sounds wrong!!.......2006-04-06

This review was very difficult for me to write as I have mixed feelings toward the video. As a first grade teacher, I am very critical of anything that requires the very particular and accurate use of phonemic awareness. Unfortunately, as the mom in the last review pointed out, this video has many inconsistencies when the narrator and little girl say their letter sounds. First of all, when saying letter sounds, one NEVER wants to add the sound -uh after any letter!! For example, when saying the sound for "T" we don't say "TUH", we simply whisper it by dropping our tougue from the roof to the bottom of our mouth. Or, we say "W" not by saying "WUH" but by forming the W with our lips, then holding the W sound like wwwwww. Though most of the sounds in this video are correct, they occasionally slip into the "-uh" trap! How on earth are our children supposed to read if they add -uh to every consonant....tell me....for instance, what the heck is puh-a-tuh! (translation without the -uh and you get the word "pat"!)
Now, looking beyond the inconsistencies in pronounciation, I have to say that my 2 year old son LOVES the video!!! I am completely in awe and amazed that within one time of watching it, he repeats EVERY letter as it drops onto the screen. Though I find it terribly repetitive and boring, he is COMPLETELY engrossed!! And you know, HE IS the one who is supposed to love the video (not me!) so I suppose Brainy Baby has hit the mark on that aspect! He sits through the seven minute introduction and is totally aware as each written letter comes on. He enjoys the kids and babies on the screen and it doesn't seem to bother him that there is no real "action" or fun puppets like they have in the Baby Einstein videos. So, as a mother, I am overjoyed that he is enjoying the video, learning his letters AND gaining a nice vocabulary. He is slightly speech delayed, so anything that will help to improve his language awareness is a blessing.

So how do I rate this?? As a teacher, probably no more than a 3. As a mother, I'd have to give this a 5 since my own child is rapidly developing his language awareness just by watching a simple DVD! I haven't watched any other letters video, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Product Description

This unique video (one of a 2-part series) is perfect for Baby's first video! The 2 DVDs work together to help develop both the Left and Right sides of the brain. Left Brain features classical music and gentle voices, and focuses on such cognitive skills as logic, patterns, letters & numbers, sequencing, analyzing details, and more!

Amazon.com

It's called "whole brain thinking," the notion that if children are stimulated to use both sides of the brain--developing their abilities to think both logically and creatively--they will become more adept learners. Underscoring such research, the folks at Small Fry Productions (makers of Bilingual Baby) have produced Brainy Baby, which joins a host of worthy tapes designed to stimulate a baby's mind. This two-volume set is unique, however, in addressing specific left and right brain functions in distinct, 30-minute programs. "Left Brain," the second volume, picks up where volume one leaves off, engaging a child's analytical abilities. Bright visuals encourage growth in the areas of math, language, and logic. Patterns and shapes are introduced in colors of red, black, and white. Language is explored beginning with letters of the alphabet, followed by simple words and voice-overs offering the equivalent in Spanish and French. Numbers are presented in sequence using interactive questions (How many do you see?). Less clinical than the So Smart! approach, Brainy Baby provides enthusiastic narration and plenty of baby faces, familiar toys, and giggles. It also employs the so-called Mozart effect (the idea that classical music enhances a child's spatial intelligence), interspersing selections from baroque and classical era composers Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. If parents are uncomfortable with the film's academic premise to "develop your child's analytical side for a smarter baby," they can be assured that, research aside, there is plenty of pure enjoyment here to delight a wee one, 6 to 36 months. And the melodies of the maestros make it palatable for parents too. --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars My triplets love it!.......2006-08-11

We have Right Brain and Left Brain. My triplets, who have very different personalities, liked Baby Einstein better when they were still in bouncers and crawling around. Now that they are toddlers at 22 mos, they've been enjoying Brainy Baby better. They still like Baby Einstein but since that only has music they just get the enjoyment of the pictures and music and such and the visual fun. With Brainy Baby, they are now learning because the narrator will say what's on the screen instead of just seeing it, so they are learning more now and understanding. For us, Baby Einstein is better for the infants, where Brainy Baby is better for the toddlers ages 1+ to start. But we love it! I didn't know they made more but now that I know I'm going to start buying the others! They love them!

5 out of 5 stars Brainy Baby Left Brain.......2006-02-25

I have 2 year old twins they enjoy this dvd, as well as learn from it. And when I put it on it holds there attention long enough to get in a half hour workout.

5 out of 5 stars Left & Right Brain Videos were big hits at our house!.......2005-12-11

I purchased these used from a bookstore that buys and resells used books and videos. I think my baby boy was about 5 months old at the time. These were the ONLY videos that ever captured his attention at that young age. Any other video--Disney, Baby Einstein, etc.--just had him crying within a few minutes. These, though, he would watch to the end, fascinated. To this day, he loves them, and he is now 15 months old; the tapes are WORN OUT so I am reordering them both. Not only does he still love them, but I just had a new baby, and I am hoping they will entertain her just as much. In fact, the other night, we accidentally woke him up and he cried and cried and wouldn't go back to sleep. Finally, in desperation, my husband popped one of these into the VCR, and my son was INSTANTLY quieted the moment he heard the familiar music; in no time at all he was ready to go back to bed.

We have since purchased most of the other titles in the Brainy Baby series--he loves them all, the music, the images of the babies, etc. The ABC video is especially well-done. He also gradually learned to enjoy other types of videos by Baby Einstein, Sesame Street, etc. But these two left & right brain videos are still his very favorites.

5 out of 5 stars brainy baby left brain, right brain, english, abc's, 123's.......2005-10-26

My son who is two just loves these videos. He interacts with them more than any other video.

2 out of 5 stars Not for babies.......2005-05-13

Sorry, but I have to give this DVD a negative review.
First of all: what age is it really for? There are many fragments that introduce spelling and addition. Don't you think it's a little bit yearly for your 6 months old (and probably even 3)? The DVD needs much more real life objects, it sounds and looks VERY dull and boring. I always thought that children learn through play, songs, rhymes, and etc, but not through dull repetition. Even alphabet is introduced without well known "ABC song". I am giving this DVD two stars because it has nice classical music and it did catch some attention of my 18 months old son (so far we saw it ones). As much more age appropriate material I would recommend:
Hap Palmer "Baby songs: ABC,123, colors & shapes";
Bee Smart Baby- Vocabulary Builder;
Baby Babble - speech enhancing video;
Baby Einstein- Van Gogh (world of colors);
The Wiggles-"Toot-Toot"
Brainy Baby - Shapes & Colors

Reaching beyond the basic rainbow and building-block primer, Brainy Baby: Shapes & Colors celebrates the many forms and hues that typical 1- to 4-year olds encounter in their everyday surroundings. A music video introduces the shapes portion of the show by focusing on edible triangles, circles, and crescents. A thorough, creative rundown of 11 shapes ensues, led by a helpful narrating voice that gently introduces words ("This is a circle"), asks simple questions ("How many rectangles do you see?"), and points out interesting sights. Halfway through the 40-minute program, a second music video gives viewers a chance to stretch, wiggle, and prepare to learn about 12 colors. Outstanding camera work captures imaginative footage outdoors and indoors, from preening pink flamingos to gleeful toddlers cavorting with foam shapes. The DVD also includes an interactive storybook, narrated by a child, to reinforce lessons learned; a video sing-along; and other parent/child activities. --Liane Thomas

3 out of 5 stars brainy baby shapes and colors - just ok.......2005-08-10

The video is Ok but some of the songs are pretty hokey and even my son doesn't like them. He will watch the video but he has yet to sit for the entire video like he does with others.

3 out of 5 stars Tackles 2 concepts in 1 video.......2005-05-15

The Shapes portion of this video begins with a really long song about shapes and foods (triangles are like pizza slices, etc). I really don't care for the singing voices. It always sounded to me like they were singing, "Whilst you know how to name your shapes". I had to listen to this over and over and finally realized they they were really singing "Once you know how to name your shapes" (at least I think that must be what they are saying because whilst just doesn't make sense).

The shapes focused on in this video are circle, square, triangle, rectangle, star, diamond, heart, oval, crescent, and then they have a very little bit with the shapes pentagon, hexagon, and octagon.

The very first time I watched this I thought it was annoying. Everything seemed to be fast and hard to absorb. As I watched it again I felt that it wasn't quite as bad as I thought at first. I like the Colors half of the video better.

In the Colors section they have a lot of repeats of Baby's First Impressions Colors, but Brainy Baby has more speaking and adds a few more colors. The colors are red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, brown, pink, black, white, silver and gold. After a few colors they have a color review. Just for you to get an idea, for purple they show these things in purple: balloons, flowers, bunny, ball, baby with a scuba outfit on (why? I don't know. I guess because it's purple), slinky, grapes (animated ones and also real ones), egg plant, pool dolphin toy, easter egg, toy turtle and then kids in purple.

It is nice that this video tackles two concepts in one video. I think it's ok but I'm not wildly excited about it. I really like So Smart Shapes and So Smart Colors better. Please read my other reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD.......2004-12-04

This is a good DVD. My daughter likes it. She likes all the shapes and colors in the Brainy Baby Video and in the Galloping Minds 'Shapes and Colors' video. I recommend both.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD to teach Shapes and Colors.......2004-09-22

We started off with "Right Brain" on this series. After a few days we introduced my daughter (20 months) to Shapes and Color DVD. We must admit, this is an awesome DVD. Even better than the Right Brain! The narrator describes each shapes and colors very clearly and distinctly. My daughter after watching it for few days can now say red green blue (in her own pronounciation ofcourse) ! I would highly recommend this DVD. Along with this, you may also look into getting bright colored balls and objects. We bought five very bright colored foam balls from Walmart which also proved to be very valuable. Now she can relate to things shown in the DVD and things around her. Also there is a song in the DVD "I am sitting on green grass" which we thought was sooo peaceful and catchy that me and my wife are always humming it. :-D

5 out of 5 stars school teacher and mom of 3.......2004-04-02

The thing that I like most about this video is that it doesn't just give the 'basic' shapes, colors, etc. but is well-rounded in that it encourages the child's brain to stretch beyond the usual and it 'grows' the child everytime they watch it. They see something 'new' everytime and are always asking to watch it 'Just one more time please Mommy?' This is sweet music to my ears!

5 out of 5 stars Must have!!.......2007-02-12

Ok I have to say this is one of the best. I have a couple of the Baby Einstein DVD's for this age group and my son who is 28 months loves this Brainy Baby DVD. He'll look through all of our DVD's for it and pop it into the DVD player on his own and start watching it. He'll repeat about everything that they try to teach like with the numbers, colors, and words. The only draw back is that it's kind of long for a two year old. It's 45 min. He'll watch it for about 15 min, then he may go off and do something else and while it's still playing, he'll come back to the tv to start watching it again. All in all, this is a great educational DVD. Must have! Hey for the younger babies too; I have a 5 month old that loves classical baby by HBO, my 2 year old, loves that DVD too.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to teaching your child first words!.......2006-12-17

I have a few Baby Einstein DVDs, but I favor the idea of having a narrator explain the objects and actions on these Brainy Baby DVDs because it provides not only a visual representation, but a verbal one as well.

I currently own Brainy Baby Left Brain, Right Brain, Art, and English. I purchased these when my daughter was about 9 months old. She is now 14 months and has started clearly verbalizing since she turned 12 months. She is pointing to objects around her and saying many of the words in these shows, particularly from Brainy Baby English.

This DVD reinforced the learning of her body parts, shapes, colors, animals, and more. I couln't be more satisfied. I also purchased this for less at deepdiscountdvd with no tax and free shipping.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Video - Highly Recommend!!.......2005-11-20

I have 18 month-old twin boys who are just beginning to talk and communicate with us. There are a few other videos (DVD's) out there for 'first words', but this has been the most complete. Not only does it cover a lot of common words, but it also teaches some concepts like (put on or pushing something).

The boys really do like watching the real people and objects in each scene, and they appear to be taking everything in.

I am not what you would consider a 'flash card mother', but I do appreciate constructive entertainment. This seems to really help both of them with their communication.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ENCOURAGEMENT.......2005-06-01

My two year old is speech delayed and I purchased this video along with Brainy Baby ABC's. He loves it! I hear him imitating and saying the words and as a parent I am pleased to give him a break from the puppet based shows. I love puppet based shows just like he does but he doesn't miss them at all in this video. Looking forward to buying more....much better results and attention than Baby Einstein or Baby Bach. Two thumbs up!!!

Product Description

The second of a 2-part series, these 2 DVDs work together to engage your child's whole brain (logic and creative) to help boost your baby's intellect. Right Brain features classical music and gentle voices, and focuses on such cognitive skills as creative thinking, art & drawing, rhymes, spacial reasoning, and imagination, intuition, and more!

Amazon.com

While there are many tapes designed to stimulate a baby's mind, Brainy Baby is unique in addressing left and right brain functions in distinct programs. Called "whole brain thinking," the theory is that if children are stimulated to use both sides of the brain--preparing them to think logically and creatively--they will become more adept at learning and problem solving. Capitalizing on this research, the folks at Small Fry Productions (makers of Bilingual Baby) have produced a two-volume set to develop the whole brain. Volume one helps stimulate the right brain, which research shows is the center for creativity, intuition, and imagination. To engage such processes, the program uses imagery (such as ink blots and clouds transforming into familiar objects), color recognition (by way of deliciously gooey paint), and patterns (from nesting shapes to 3-D objects). Unlike the So Smart! approach, there is enthusiastic narration during the 32-minute program and more variation between segments. Employing the so-called Mozart effect, the program utilizes classical music (believed to enhance a child's spatial intelligence) from impressionist era composers Debussy, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky. Whether or not a parent is interested in the push to "develop a child's creative side for a smarter baby" (as the film's literature espouses), there is another compelling reason to consider the Brainy Baby series: pure enjoyment. Parents will get a kick out of watching their toddlers respond to the visual feast before them. And the accompanying classical melodies make it palatable for parents too. (For ages 6 to 36 months.) --Lynn Gibson

2 out of 5 stars My son just wasn't interested.......2007-02-16

My son (18 months) wasn't interested at all in this video. I think it looks well made and interesting but my son still prefers the My Baby Can Talk video and Baby Einstein.

2 out of 5 stars Does not hold our attention.......2006-07-22

Let me start off by saying that I have higher degrees in art, art history, music, and Romance languages -- so I am an admitted "art snob." Having said that, I would recommend that you try the Baby Einstein "Baby Van Gogh, World of Colors" and "Baby Mozart" videos instead of this Brainy Baby video.

I find this Brainy Baby video to be slow, boring, insipid, condescending, and visually uninteresting; I cannot wait to put in something else. Wait, you say, isn't this about the baby who is watching it? Well, I first realized that it is truly boring (and not "just me") by watching my 6-month-old's reaction to it. (She is now 10 months old, and still does not like it.) She consistently snubbed her nose at this video; she did not watch it for more than a few seconds at a time and always turned away to find something more interesting to do. She has never had this reaction to the Einstein videos I mentioned.

I tried reintroducing this video every few weeks since she was 6 months old, thinking maybe she would grow to understand it better, but after 4 months of this approach, she still is not interested. However, the Einstein videos have captivated her from the beginning, and still do.

Here are the specifics that I think are the problem. The visuals are weak and not bold/colorful enough. My daughter is bored by watching the other babies play with toys. The female voice-over is distracting and annoying, rather than engaging and instructional as intended. The flow is not as coherent as the Einstein videos, which are broken into little themes that make sense in each video. There is no charm or sense of humor, like the Einstein videos.

No, I do not have any connection whatsoever to the Baby Einstein folks. I'm just saying that the Brainy Baby videos seem less professional and are not as engaging. If you're going to spend the money and spend your time watching a video with your baby, buy one that you and the baby will enjoy together.

5 out of 5 stars The DVD lives up to customer reviews.......2006-07-17

I bought this based on the customer reviews and had it for about one month now. My 8 month old absolutely loves it and remains engaged in the show most of the time. I notice how she enjoys the children and the puppets when they come on.
I also have other Baby Einstein DVDs and the Brainy Baby series is so much better! I like how a woman narrates through the entire show so that my child is being taught visually and verbally. Baby Einstein is more about just listening to the music. I'm so glad I came upon these DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars We love Brainy Baby at our house. .......2005-12-05

I just can't say enough good things about the Brainy Baby series of videos and toys. I have allowed my baby to watch one Brainy Baby video per day since he was about 6 months old. He loves them. And I love being able to have a few minutes to clean my kitchen. :) As soon as the Brainy Baby theme music comes on he starts to smile. He is captivated. I like them much more than the Baby Einstein videos.

And the toys.......he LOVES them. "Hello, Brainy Baby!" They are the most loved and most used toys in his toy box. I have to keep an extra stash of batteries just to make sure that they are all working all the time.

We love Brainy Baby at our house.

loves this dvd. she'll stand at the tv and laugh, point, makes animal noises. ect.

2 out of 5 stars Brainy Baby - Animals.......2007-02-22

This did not seem like a Brainy Baby DVD. My 13mos old son loves Brainy Baby with the classical music and the cute babies, he loves to comment on the babies and point to teh screen. If you want a DVD with just shots of animals then this is proabably a good movie to get, there were lots of anuimals. But if you're looknig for a good Brainy Baby type DVD, I wouldn't suggest this one.

5 out of 5 stars The next step up after Baby Einstein..........2005-04-17

I decided to order a copy of this DVD when my son was still under a year. It was definitely too advanced for him then, but now at 20 months this is BY FAR his favorite movie. He watches most of the DVD which includes little kids/babies in the intro, Old MacDonalds Farm, an ABC of animals, and sections on different kinds of animal (furry faced animals, animals with fins and flippers, etc. etc.). He has even started answering some of the questions (what animal makes this sound, etc.)--so it's a bit more interactive for him.

This is a great DVD to add when your child is getting too old for the Baby Einstein videos because it offers a lot more information. For example, it gives solid information such as "Did you know a cow has 4 stomachs?" and goes over the names of baby animals and groups of animals.

This definitely gets 5 stars from my son (and me) these days!!

5 out of 5 stars Real, interesting animals.......2005-01-23

My 17-month old son is bored with all the Baby Einstein videos, but he is delighted with this. It's a good mix of animals he recognizes and new or exotic animals. He especially likes the "fins and flippers." I love the real animals and the music is great too. SOME DVDs are ok for infants and toddlers, but bore older preschoolers. This one's good for kids 3-5 too, so big sisters and brothers won't mind sharing the TV as much!

5 out of 5 stars Great for animal lovers.......2004-09-14

My son has been watching this since 12 months old and loves it! The DVD is one hour long and is very educational and fun. Excellent real footage of many different animals.

Studies show that children exposed to a second language during the first few years of life can more easily master the sounds of that language. Based on the concept of total language immersion, Brainy Baby: French is a commendable tool for those seeking bilingual enrichment for their youngsters. French is the sole language spoken through 45 minutes of instruction and live-action footage covering familiar objects, colors, numbers, and phrases. Words are repeated for reinforcement (and written on the screen for early readers), while classical music by Mozart and Vivaldi plays in the background. "chapters" selected from the DVD main menu allow wee ones to watch in small, digestible segments. Extra features include a French music video sing-along, interactive storybook, and hilarious baby bloopers. Such excellent, original offerings set this program apart from other bilingual language videos. The instruction is solid, the picture quality superb, and the interspersed frivolity reminds us that captivating kids is the ultimate goal of education. (Ages 2 to 5) --Lynn Gibson

4 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Tool.......2007-04-27

My one year old daughter is currently learning French with a french teacher who comes to play for an hour a week. This DVD is proving to be very helpful in reinforcing the language during the rest of the week. Yes, it is true that the articles are not given with many of the words, but this should not be the only tool used for teaching your child another language. The images are beautiful and completely capture my daughter's attention. I am very happy with it!

3 out of 5 stars Just a suggestion.......2006-11-16

I saw this product and was instantly interested and excited. That is, till I read the reviews, which lead me to investigate Netflix to see if they carried it since I know none of the local rental stores have this series. Netflix does carry this line of dvds enabling one to rent it and test it first before buying. I, like many other parents, want the best educational products for my children to learn and grow and be exposed to culture and other languages; therefore, I believe being able to read reviews, getting other parents' and educators' opinions, and test products before buying is essential! I plan on testing this product and then most likely purchasing a few from this series of Brainy Baby dvds, as I already have all the Baby Einstein dvds that my children still love (1 & 2 1/2). I hope this was at least a little help to someone out there and I will leave another review after I've actually seen the dvd.
Merci- Susan

3 out of 5 stars Try it - it's okay.......2006-02-24

This item is definitely more useful than it is not. After only 3 viewings, my almost 3-year could count to 20 in French and his 20-month-old brother started labelling objects in French. I was amazed as French will be their third language.

My only reservation now is that I do hear the non-French accent coming out when they speak. My French is very good, but of course they think the DVD's perfect and don't think Mom knows what she's talking about! So, I'm looking for a slightly more advanced product geared towards young pre-schoolers...

5 out of 5 stars Baby W loves this DVD.......2006-01-05

I started playing this DVD for my son when he was six months old, I thought he would be too young for it but he just loved it. When he was learning to crawl and walk between 7-11 months he lost interest in all his Einstein DVD's but this one would rivet him and still does - he is now 15 mths and watches it at least 4-5 times a week and definately understands quite a bit of French (he has said Un and held up one finger many times without being taught by me, he has yet to say one) and it has given me the confidence to use words from the Dvd when pointing to objects in his books such as un homme de neige and lunnettes de soleil. I agree the speaker's accent is not French and it would be better to introduce the words with their articles but the DVD is still a success particularly for families that do not speak French fluently. I would definately like to see more DVD's that teach languages to pre-schoolers with an emphasis on more traditional French childrens songs. I highly, highly recommend the CD "Baby's first steps in French" if only this was available as a DVD.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-01-02

My son is 14 months, and is learning english, french and chinese at the same time. He already sits through the entire video as he is engrossed by it. It really helps that the images are REAL and not animation or puppets that babies don't relate to! For a beginner french for babies, it is fine, although, yes, there are a few mistakes, (i am from Quebec), but not enough to make any real difference for babies to learn french. I like that the ENTIRE video is to TEACH french, and Baby Einstein is mainly images and music, NOT enough spoken french at ALL. I am finding trouble finding ANTOHER dvd like Brainy Baby. I would like more of these.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Peek-a-boo enthusiasts.......2006-08-08

My now 20-month-old has loved this video for several months, since he became obsessed with peek-a-boo. It's not non-stop peek-a-boo but enough to satisfy his need. The music and acting is pleasant and realistic, not overly dramatic or annoying for grown ups. It shows scenes of babies and toddlers playing peek-a-boo, parents singing to their kids (e.g., wheels on the bus, you are my sunshine, etc.), cartoon segments, and nature scenes (which don't really fit with the theme of games/songs/play but what the heck, my son loves it all).
