5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-06-13

This is a wonderful way to teach your child the silent E and to teach them how to read a word with two vowels together. I actually learned a few tricks in this video. I love this!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as impressive at the Letters Video but still worth it!.......2007-06-02

I love Leap Frog but I made the mistake of getting this video before the other words video and it is just too advanced for my 2 - 2 1/2 year old. This is my fault, I know, but I had hoped that it would still have enough entertainment value to get him hooked until he could understand it. It really is for the older group ..

Still, I can't wait until my child gets into this video.

5 out of 5 stars Great for speech!!!.......2007-04-01

My kids are 2 and a half and 15 months, and I have all the leap frog videos. My kids are constantly making the letter sounds with the videos and saying the words. My oldest son has delayed speech. I was told by a speech therapist to use these videos, and it has really improved my sons vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-03-29

My daughter absolutely loves this latest installment of the Leap Frog videos! With a child that has some learning difficulties, like mine, putting spelling and reading into a medium that she can excell in is the best gift a parent could ask for.

The Muppets are putting on a play on words (get it?), a convenient framing device for a Sesame Street-style reading lesson. Get ready for some sticky, slippery fun when Prairie Dawn directs the G-rated vaudevillian act, complete with Bert and Ernie in straw hats telling corny jokes and a pie-throwing machine in fine working order. There are behind-the-scenes prop emergencies and a finale no-show, prompting rhyming lessons ("Oh, no, Hoho is a no-show!") and plenty of TV clips, including "I Am Chicken," the fowl take on the feminist anthem "I Am Woman." Elmo joins singing partners Mo and Flo in the stirring (substitute) finale, "We Got the Need to Read." Kindergarteners who think they're too old for Sesame Street might still get drawn in by challenges aimed at beginning readers. Ages 2 to 6. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars There is this ONE monster..........2007-05-17

My 20 mth. old LOVES this whole video - but there is this segment where these 3 bald muppets, and this one awesome hairy muppet do a song... "cat, fat, hat, mat!!" I don't think I've EVER heard my son laugh so hard!! We replay it for him like 4 times in a row before we continue on. As all the Sesame products, this one is well done and has its special wonderful memorable moments. I like it too!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and entertainment for my little one.......2007-02-09

We own quite a few DVDs, my son loves this one and the Elmo 123 count with me. Both are truly fantastic. He can watch it every day and he laughs even, he is only 9 months.

2 out of 5 stars don't bother.......2005-05-17

This DVD is often amusing, but completely unsuitable for children learning to read. Words are all but incomprehensible in many of the songs, and some charaters don't articulate the words as well as you would expect (don't get me started on Elmo). It's also too long.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't Hold My Twin's Interest, For Some Reason.......2005-03-14

We've owned this DVD for about a year now and for some reason, my 2 year old twins have never been and still are not interested in it. They LOVE Ernie & Bert, but it just doesn't hold their interest. Still, we keep trying to reintroduce it. Perhaps it is specific to them, but they do absolutely love "Learning About Letters" and "The Best of Elmo". I would check those out if you are looking for excellent Sesame Street videos. Both of them have a lot of songs, which holds the interest of most toddlers. Perhaps my girls will love the Word Play video in 6 months or a year. We'll keep trying, but it just isn't a hit, for some reason. It is the only video we own that they have no interest in. That being said, Sesame Street is one of the best programs for little ones, so you might want to still give it a try. Looks like it is a hit with a lot of others out there.

2 out of 5 stars If you want old-time sesame street, this isn't it.......2004-09-14

I bought this tape after reading the reviews. I am looking for Sesame Street videos that are good for our daughter but also will keep our attention, since we always sit down with her to watch. We are big Muppet Show fans and also grew up with Sesame Street. I was not getting this tape to teach my 18-month-old to read, but some educational content is desirable. If you are expecting something like the Muppet Show, you will be disappointed, although the bits with Prairie Dawn and Benny Rabbit begin to approach it. The rest was rather flat, although I will admit my expectations were high for this video. There are only two "old" sketches, and the "fat cat sat on the mat" with Mahna Mahna and three other muppets is marred by the addition of flashy animated words that are not well-timed to match what's being said on the screen. It doesn't bother me that the words "taught" in this video are so random, "sticky" and "slippery" with "I" and "at" and "go;" the lack of entertainment value for adults is the bigger flaw in my estimation, as is the absence of more excellent older sketches from Sesame Street. Muppet Show fans, do yourselves a favor and get some of the 45 available episodes of the original Muppet Show.

My son can't get enough. He watches this over and over. We sing the songs and have a good time with the letters. I am glad I brought this dvd it's the best thing since Brainy baby...

5 out of 5 stars My guys love it . . . .......2007-04-15

I was also surprised by the poor reviews - both my two year old and one year old are riveted, which is fortunate as it's one of the only children's videos that doesn't make me want to gouge out my own eardrums. I will say that for actually learning the alphabet I think the Leapfrog Letter Factory is better, but there again you have the super annoying Professor Quigely - who I must say is no Stephen Colbert.

5 out of 5 stars Buying Again - Can't live without it!.......2007-02-08

My kids love this, and as an adult who has to sit through it, the banter and dry humor between A and Z is hilarious. They dropped and scratched it when it fell out of the car on a family trip and I'm buying it again for my youngest who misses it so much. The kids didn't seem to mind the less overwhelming presence of Elmo and really appreciate the great music. It's a nice break from Elmo and I was surprised that they picked up on the great underlying lesson about not boasting (A), and not not always being the most popular (Z).

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was great - surprised at poor reviews.......2006-12-20

My kids are only 6 months old and this video holds their attention more than Baby Einstein and other dvds. I'm surprised at the poor reviews, but all kids are different and don't like the same things...

4 out of 5 stars Seseame Street Alphabet Soup.......2006-11-04

I give this video 4 stars. I think it needs a little more Elmo and company to get 5 stars. My daughter is not so stingent on rating her vids. I think she would still give it 5 stars. It keeps her attention, in spite of the fact that there are not enough muppets utilized in this video. I definitely prefer (and so does she) the video called Seaseme "Do the Alphabet." This video is good for variety though.

It's the first day of autumn in the Hundred Acre Woods, the perfect time for "munching on honey" and learning the alphabet in this perfectly paced instructional program. Christopher Robin provides the gentle tutorials by reading from his very own ABC book as Pooh sits by his side. But alas, when Pooh borrows the book to show Piglet, a great wind carries the pages away. With an earnest desire to make amends, Pooh and his friends decide to rewrite the book themselves. While Owl provides the instruction, they start at the beginning, learning to write their names by shaping each letter and learning its sound. A song reinforces the lesson and a delightful surprise at the program's end allows the gang to put their rhyming knowledge to work. While this is not a comprehensive spelling course, viewers will learn that letters have shapes and sounds, understand what makes a word rhyme, and put into practice early letter recognition. A wonderful companion program to Winnie the Pooh 123's. (Ages 2 to 6) --Lynn Gibson

Description

It's the first day of autumn, and Christopher Robin has written a book of rhymes about all of his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. But when the pages of the book scatter in the wind, everyone must help put it back together. Now if Pooh can only remember how to rhyme, it just may save the day! WINNIE THE POOH ABC's provides an age-appropriate introductory lesson in literacy by conveying basic information about rhyming, highlighting the value of writing down words, explaining the connection between sounds and letters and familiar names, and illustrating how to form basic letters. Your preschooler will find learning irresistibly fun with Winnie the Pooh and all his pals in never-before-seen stories developed by Disney and leading educators! Discover Disney Learning Adventures, and give your child the priceless gift of learning that lasts a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Learning DVD.......2007-05-29

Excellent, no complaints.
Great with the Disney 123 DVD
No problems

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't really teach the alphabet.......2007-05-27

The title is a bit deceiving. This video doesn't really cover the ABC"s. Pooh looses the pages to a book of poems that Christopher Robin has written about the different characters. In order to get the book in the right order, they must rhyme the last word of the previous poem to the first word of the next poem. They then learn to write the first letter of each of their names. There is, however, a short video that sings the ABC song in the bonus features. If you're looking for a specific ABC teaching aid, I'd look somewhere else, but if you love Pooh, or your little one does, it's still a cute video that has some educational merit.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good DVD, Bad Title.......2007-04-21

It is unfortunate that Disney named this DVD ABC's because teaching the alphabet is not it's purpose. Early Literacy Skills would be a more appropriate title. This DVD is great for kids who already know the alphabet but not for those who are trying to learn.

My daughter received all of the Winnie the Pooh Learning Adventure DVDs for her 2nd birthday (the others are 123's, Shapes and Sizes and Wonderful Word Adventure). I didn't think she would learn much from this one because she had already learned the alphabet from the Starfall website. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it introduces more advanced concepts.

The Product Description says "WINNIE THE POOH ABC's provides an age-appropriate introductory lesson in literacy by conveying basic information about rhyming, highlighting the value of writing down words, explaining the connection between sounds and letters and familiar names, and illustrating how to form basic letters."

I would recommend that you find an introduction to the alphabet elsewhere. The Starfall website and Leap Frog - Letter Factory are good options. Then move onto Winnie the Pooh - ABC's for more advanced concepts like spelling, rhyming and writing.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music, my 22 month old LOVES it!.......2007-02-10

This is by far our son's favorite video. He is thrilled by the wonderful, orchestral music, and the funny scenes with the characters. I'm sure he doesn't understand the entire plot, but for sheer enjoyment, I wish I had 10 movies like this! Highly recommend!

2 out of 5 stars If You're Looking To Teach Letters, Look Elsewhere.......2007-02-06

I have to agree with the vast majority of the reviewers and say that this product is more or less useless when it comes to its expected purpose: to teach pre-schoolers the alphabet. It focuses mostly on words and rhyming. This might be good for older children, but not for a two year old and not for a parent that wanted something to teach letters.

The bonus song was the only part I could admit to hitting the target, but it's very short (2 or 3 minutes) and there are only so many times you can put it on repeat before you want to tear your hair out.

I purchased this DVD after falling in love with the Shapes and Sizes DVD, which is also from Disney's Learning Adventures. The difference is night and day. (I also own the 123s, which is also tremendously better than this disc).

If you want to help your child learn letters (and even the sounds the letters make), go with the LeapFrog Letter Factory disc. I bought it along with this disc after reading the reviews here and it has earned every good word said about it.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it.......2007-04-04

Well first of all it had a cute looking cover and appeared to be what we needed, my son is struggling with phonics some and I figured we'd try a DVD since he learns well from PBS TV programs etc. I bought this DVD and I was quite suprised to find it was an older version of a phonics video, maybe 80's dress and it was kinda outdated to say the least. I could over look that but what I found unacceptable was there were so many letters she sounded out incorrectly!!! That is unacceptable! She pronounced the P sound "Puh" which can be confusing to a child trying to learn sounds......always adding an unneeded uh sound on the end of letters like, n (nnnuh or), p (puh), t (tuh, it was really sad for a phonics teaching tool, save your money!!!! I have ordered Leap Frog DVDs instead to replace this one! While with all that said my son (6yrs) does find it somewhat entertaining because they are not allowed to watch much TV and he is learning a little on how to write the letters and some letter and phonics exposure with it I guess. I will probably have this DVD *disappear* once the Leap Frog ones arrive!

1 out of 5 stars Pretty terrible.......2006-11-27

This video is awful. Both my daughter and my reading classes have seen the LeapFrog videos several times. I was looking for another video for them that would be fun and educational at the same time. I thought I would try this. Bad idea!
For one thing, it is boring. This lady with horrible fashion sense goes through the alphabet in order and says the names of the letters and the sounds they make, draws the letter, makes a word with the letter, and goes on to the next letter. There is an audience of very bored looking kids watching her but she doesn't interact with them. There is a person in a costume that reminds me of a french fry guy that the lady talks to sometimes and I think that is their attempt to make it fun but it's a pretty lame attempt. My daughter rarely gets to watch television and usually it's a big treat but she actually asked me to turn this off.
For another thing, it's bad teaching!! They teach the letter sound and immediately put the letter into a word. For the letter "a", the kids are supposed to read "at" but they haven't taught the letter "t" yet! And it does not explicitly teach about blending at all. No child could learn to read that way. Save your money! If you don't already have the Leapfrog videos, get those instead; they are excellent.

This moderately entertaining dvd features kids only and has encouraged my 5 year old daughter to want write her uppercase alphabet. We have a big library of education dvds and this one adds diversity and is quite educational.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2005-08-02

It is a great idea for a DVD, but the quality of the video was not good at all. My 14 month old was bored and wants me to change the DVD every time I try to put it in. He is much more interested in Baby Einstein.

4 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-03-29

I think this is a good educational video that teaches letters, sounds, and words that begin with the letter. But, my kids don't seem to like the video. They leave after 10 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars This video has helped our late talker!!!.......2005-03-07

I have a 4 year old son with autism, who has always loved the entire Baby BumbleBee series. They have really helped him to be able to generalize his vocabulary and expand his concepts.....like when he sees that there is such a thing as picture of a lion, and a toy lion, and a real lion.
I also have a sweet 2 year old girl who has only recently started talking. We of course were concerned, but she has really blossomed, especially in regards to this video! She and her brother will sit there together, and when they show a letter, they both will SHOUT it out at the same time. They also will repeat the sound the letters make along with the kids on the video. The video shows a variety of words that start with a letter(which both kids love announcing too!), then shows a little girl writing the letter. I keep foam letters in the bathtub, and now when my daughter gets her bath, she is so excited to pick up the letters and name them on her own.
All of these Baby Bumblebee videos have helped my kids with object labels which in turn has helped them improve their receptive language.

My little boy can now sound out words by recognizing the letters in the words and knowing what sounds those letters are supposed to make. The video is a true learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Video.......2005-01-09

I have a 20mth old daughter who really enjoys this video. It clearly focuses on each letter of the alphabet. She recognizes and can say some of the letters.
This video is for a child who enjoys the slower paced movies, like So Smart and Baby Einstein, rather than faster paced movies like Barney and Sesame Street.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best tools to develop little minds.......2006-08-07

My 14 months old baby loves it! We bought the numbers, the alphabet and the shapes DVD's. She likes them all and you can tell she is really learning.
The music and the graphics keep the attention of my daughter and encourage her to say the words she is listening on TV.
She can count 1 to 5. She learned this weekend to say yellow and blue watching these videos.
I highly recommend them.

2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2006-06-27

One of the items I regret buying. Even my daughter didn't want to bother watching it after the first time. Poor quality DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Done well, Video holds my childs attention.......2006-05-26

We have a [...] who is very active. When we turned on the DVD, she took to the Alphabet and Phonics DVD well. It caught her attention and she's been asking to watch it many times. The educational aspect appeals to me. She enjoys the music.
I give it four stars. She seems to be making progress with the letters. I like the recap feature in the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Learning Experience and Fun to watch.......2006-05-12

My son liked the Alphabet and Phonics DVD. Once we received it in the mail, he watched it several times.

The reason I liked it because it was quite educational. The music was peppy and so were the animations. The aim of the DVD which is to educate and entertain, I think is pretty much met well.

My husband and I enjoy watching our son point at all the images in the DVD. He then shows them to us at home. He also enjoyed the live shots of the animals.

The good thing about the DVD is that it is pretty long, about 45 minutes. This engages my son for a long time.

There are about a 100 images in the DVD, which is lot like showing an alphabet book to a child. The DVD is also priced reasonably.

The kind of mom I am, I lay stress on learning. There are a lot of videos out there in stores, that have songs and all kinds of plots, but lack the main ingredient, which is why I prefer this one. The main focus for the Alphabet and Phonics DVD is learning.

My son tells me to put the Alphabet DVD on very often. It is one of his favorite DVDs. He also likes the Baby Einstein DVDs, which he watches often.

According to him, he likes the X part since that is his favorite letter. He enjoys the recap after every 5 letters, which is a good idea, since it reinforces the learning process. Each letter is shown big and wide.

This DVD has definitely helped my son learn his letters. My husband, my son and I are happy with our purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected!.......2006-05-12

I ordered this Phonics DVD for my son after reading the 5 star reviews and was very disappointed. My son has shown an interest in learning the alphabet since he was 28months old and this was the first DVD of it's kind that we purchased, because my husband and I believe in the Phonics method of learning.

1. I have to tell you that I do not consider this DVD to have anything to do with Phonics. Yes it does teach children the sounds of the letters but several are not correct, since I do not believe that it will help a child learn to read later on, when "P" for example is pronounced "Puh" and "T" is pronounced "Tuh". Try learning to read the word "Pet" for example with this concept, what would you read "Puh e Tuh"?
2. The graphics are ancient. Looks like someone made it at home using poor quality graphics software.
3. Some live recordings of children are very poor, as if whoever made it used their own children and did not prep them for it.
4. The sounds of the letters are mentioned at the end of all the words relating to the letter, as an afterthought.
5. The music is not conducive to attracting a child to learn. Although the music is not bad I just do not feel it is appropriate for this DVD.
6. Generally a very boring DVD and I believe that had my son been older he probably wouldn't have watched it more than maybe once.

The above reasons are just to name a few as to why both my husband and I were not impressed by this DVD and would not recommend it to others.

We would however recommend Walt Disney's "Winnie the Pooh, ABC's & 123's" because it can attract and hold a child's attention and it is fun. Downside they too have their "Puh's" and "Tuh's" but overall you cannot compare the quality. And if you are interested in purchasing software to help teach your child, you can find true Phonics products from Scholastic e.g. "Clifford Reading" and much more. We have purchased two Clifford programs for our son and he loves them. We have since ordered another three or four.

Last but not least, the only reason I gave this DVD two stars instead of one is because my son being eager to learn what all these letters are in the books that we read to him, has watched it several times. Since we purchased Winnie the Pooh however he has grown really bored of this one and I can foresee that it will sit forever on the shelf, once the Sesame Street ones arrive that we have just ordered.

Added August 18th 2006
Due to Sesame Street and Leap Frog products my son now knows the entire alphabet with all the sounds of the letters. I would recommend checking them out.

3 out of 5 stars ONLY teaches the alphabet, narrator needs to speak up also.......2004-11-02

I purchased this video along with Fun With Numbers and Fun With Colors trying to teach my 2.5 yr old son Spanish. In Fun With Numbers/Colors they say sentances in English then in Spanish along with teaching the colors/numbers and objects. In this video they ONLY teach the letters. No letter recognition (M is for Manzana, P is for Pelota, etc) no talking at ALL outside of the alphabet. My son likes this DVD (mostly because of the train) wich is why I'm giving it 3 stars. As far as me watching it with him, I can't stand to watch more than 10 minutes without having to do something else because it's mind numbing.. there's relatively no excitement and too much repetition of only 27 letters (as typical with children's spanish alphabet they leave out ch, ll, and rr but they do have n-yay). The music on the DVD is great but needs to be turned down or the person needs to speak up because you can't hear some of the letters very well.
