The main event on VeggieTales: Sumo of the Opera is the title featurette, a comic concoction of Gilbert & Sullivan and Rocky. Veggie Tales hero Larry the Cucumber plays the Italian Scallion (okay, so he was raised by a family of onions), a professional wrestler big on quips but not on finishing anything he starts, in or out of the ring. When he's challenged to a match with the sizable Apollo Gourd, Scallion is faced with the biggest decision of his life: Does he have what it takes to complete the task? This particular VeggieTales animation treat for kids doesn't reinvent any specific Bible story, but it does underscore the importance of perseverance. Also on the disc are a few extras, including "Going Up," a more-or-less silent comedy in which a Veggie Tales version of the Three Stooges re-creates the famous Laurel and Hardy routine about pushing a piano up a long flight of stairs. --Tom Keogh

Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado, people.......2006-12-30
This is ADORABLE. Teaches you about St. Patrick's Day and I got it to nurture my boyfriend's inner-child because he also happens to be a huge Gilbert and Sullivan geek (much like myself). This is a spoof on G&S's Japanese opera "The Mikado" -- it also happens to combine a number of Rocky boxing references. Who else could do that? Bravo, VeggieTales. You make the world a funner place.
This one is lame.......2006-09-09
I love the Veggie Tales, but this one I did not enjoy at all. The SUMO story was so bad they must have felt obliged to toss in some other scraps from the cutting room floor to make you not focus on how bad the SUMO was. Like going to a yard sale where you are required to buy the whole box full of junk for $1. The veggie tales are GREAT, but this one is rotten. AVOID.
Condescending - Very Disappointing.......2006-06-22
My kids and I own, and thoroughly enjoy, almost every Veggietales DVD. This is the only one I dont like because of the story of St. Patrick. I try to teach my kids ACCEPTANCE of other people's religions, so I really don't like the way the Druids are portrayed. They are shown to be worshipping twigs and pondscum and are not intelligent enough to understand the "god is three people" metaphor, which, in my mind *is* rather confusing, but oh well.
We're Jewish, but I have never had a problem with any of the DVDs, other than this one. They always show content that I can be proud of my kids learning - just not this time. Mocking the practitioners of a type of religion that literally millions of our ancestors practiced, (paganism in general - from the Vikings to the Druids to the ancient Greeks) does not strike me as learning good character.
Sumo's Really a Disappointment.......2006-02-23
I've been watching Veggie Tales ever since my mom bought them for me when I was in kindergarten. I'm still loyal to them, even after what happened with Jonah.
Sumo, though, is one of those episodes (along with Snoodle) which I pretend never existed. When I saw the preview, I was excited. I thought that it would be some Japanese verison of Phantom of the Opera, which made me squeal with joy.
Then to find out that it was a half-episode (which was my first annoyance). Then to find out that it was a Rocky/Mikado crossover, and not Phantom (this was before I had even seen the 2004 movie). Then I tried watching the auto-commentary. Sometimes, you can appreciate a bad Veg with the auto-commentary. But even my mom, who has a better sense of humor than I do, didn't find the scenes as funny as the directors. The Silly Song was not silly. Since I was a kid, I've been familiar with "School House Rock", but "School House Polka" isn't as entertaining (and I understood the parts of speech, too). The only time I laughed during that scene was when Larry got on his back like he was at a rock concert. And c'mon! Flannelgraphs?!
For pros, though, Lutfi was pretty cute, and it was funny to watch the "What Have We Learned" part. The costumes were interesting, and Larry's yelps were funny to listen to. Scallion's training was interesting to watch, and the anime drawings of Bob and Larry were adorable. The St. Patrick's Day was funny, despite the 2-D human stuff (and it was a simile, not metaphor. Still funny line though).
I'm still loyal to Veggie Tales, and I'm looking forward to the Sheerluck Holmes movie coming out. However, Sumo remains in the basement, and it will probably stay there for a long time.
Sumo is a hit here!.......2006-02-16
My kids love 'Sumo'! I wasn't crazy about it at first, but my kids watch it constantly, so I have become a fan of it. Sweet characters, funny parodies, and I love the chorus that comes out singing before scenes. Cute VT that has won a place in my kids' VT collection.
