Tom and Jerry, the animation franchise, lasted six decades and saw several geniuses of the form--Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, and Friz Freleng--have a hand in updating and refreshing the series in later years. But Tom and Jerry: The Spotlight Collection, Premiere Volume celebrates the original mastery of producer-directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who took the familiar cat-chases-mouse concept and slowly turned it into witty, unpredictable, and sometimes ironic entertainment. The Spotlight Collection offers 40 restored, remastered shorts beginning with 1943's handsome, Oscar-nominated "Yankee Doodle Mouse" and ending with the fantastic, widescreen 1956 "Blue Cat Blues," very similar to the exaggerated look and feel of former cartoonist-gagman Frank Tashlin's live-action comedies (Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?) from the same period.

What strikes one about every episode on these discs is the lavish care Hanna-Barbera paid to Tom and Jerry, not only drumming up new, sometimes exotic settings (such as the swashbuckling "The Two Mousketeers," or for the Old West adventure "Texas Tom") but also consistently turning out gorgeous and wildly creative backgrounds, where straight lines rarely exist and the palette of a night sky includes multiple, dreamy shades of blue and green. Technicolor and novel visual ideas (e.g., shooting a scene through the tunnel-like view of a hollowed-out bread loaf) are sometimes more pleasing than the combative relationship between the two leads. But their rivalry is often renewed in very interesting ways, such as the wonderful "Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl," in which the pair play competing conductors against a lovely backdrop of L.A. landmarks. Special features include the Anchors Aweigh dance sequence featuring Jerry and Gene Kelly, and a featurette, "How Bill and Joe Met Tom and Jerry." --Tom Keogh
Description
The Tom-and-Jerry legacy chases through every nook and cranny of the classic animation pantheon, spanning six decades and several famous directors. Looney Tunes icons Friz Freleng, Tex Avery and Chuck Jones all played their part. But the enduring cat-and-mouse team was the brainchild of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Their first short Puss Gets the Boot (in which Tom was called Jasper) was released with little fanfare. Fellow animators did not consider a cat-pursuing-mouse scenario too exciting or original. But when unleashed on exhibitors and audiences, their hilariously diabolical rivalry delighted everyone. This 2-disc set of 40 restored and remastered shorts (along with fabulous celebratory bonuses) includes nine Academy Award nominees and seven winners. And with this in hand, you're a winner too!

2 out of 5 stars TOM AND JERRY.......2007-05-13

EVERY THING WAS GREAT EXCEPT VOL 1 OF THE TOM AND JERRY SET ONLY CAME WITH ONE DVD. THE SET CAME WITH TWO.

5 out of 5 stars Back to a younger time........2007-05-12

What can I say? For 2 bits you saw a movie on a Saturday, got a cartoon a feature plus the current serial cowboy movie. Another dime got you a bag of popcorn. Tom & Jerry took me back to those simplier times when I was a kid. They are as funny, and happy as they alway were. My favorites are when Jerry plays the piano, and of course the Two Mousekateers. For a few moments of relaxation, and good fun, kick back, make some popcorn, and watch a couple of these each night. It will improve your outlook and make you young at heart again.

1 out of 5 stars Spotlight disaster.......2007-05-12

Spotlight Collection 1 still contains cuts, there are interlacing problems on some of the cartoons, others are faded, scratched and dirty. For a collection that supposedly is restored and remastered this is just out of order. Warner Bros. exchange programme is a bad joke played on their customers. Don't waste your money on this load of rubbish!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection!.......2007-05-06

If you're a Tom and Jerry fan, you WILL LOVE this 2 set collection. There are virtually every classic short from the early 1940's through the mid 1950's. Some of the later ones were done in Widescreen and have been recaptured as such. Even if you're a casual cartoon viewer, this is a great collection to start with. There are a few nice extras, including commentary that sheds the light on a few secrets about the production of these cartoons.

3 out of 5 stars Great quality cartoons on dvd.......2007-02-24

Been waiting a long time for these cartoons to come out on video, but to my disappointment, much of the cartoons are still edited. Guess you can't get the originals anymore. I wonder if I should even bother getting the Droopy Dog collection coming out in may as it will most likely be edited for PC correctness too.

the DVD collection really does the T&J series justice. These are great DVD's that will last for years. The kids LOVE them. This is never on TV like it was for me when I was a kid so I wanted to ensure that my kids got the same experience. These cartoons are classic and the animation is spot-on.

LOVE this ... Get this DVD for your collection.

Note; please don't steal DVD's from the internet. It's wrong. Purchase them like the rest of the honest population does.

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of classic cartoons........2007-04-08

Most cartoons remind me of my childhood and that's exactly why I got the DVD. Who can ever forget Tom and Jerry getting on each other's case? Some cartoons are edited to reflect political correctness. I have no problem with that personally. Production quality is top notch. Good mix of cartoons. If you get this one, you might just want to get the rest.

WHEN I TURN ON CARTOON NETWORK I JUST WANT TO VOMIT WHEN LOOKING ON WHY PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT THE GOLDEN AGE OF CARTOONS WERE TOO VIOLENT , "WRONG" THESE WERE CLASSICS IN THE MAKING , IF YOU WANT VIOLENCE TURN ON CARTOON NETWORK AROUND 9:00 PM AND YOU WILL SEE ADULT SWIM WHICH IS SO RAUNCHY AND VULGER IT'S LIKE WATCHING A RATED R MOVIE ON A CHILDRENS NETWORK. I MEAN COME ON PEOPLE CLASSICS LIKE TOM AND JERRY ARE WHAT CARTOONS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE , NOT ADULT GARBAGE.

The second Spotlight Collection features both the first "Tom and Jerry" short and some of the last films in the series. In 1940, the cartoon unit of MGM was under pressure to produce more, so story man Bill Hanna and animator Joe Barbera were allowed to direct a cartoon. "Puss Gets the Boot" received an Oscar nomination, and introduced the duo that would become Tom and Jerry. (Tom was originally "Jasper.") The series ran for 15 years and won seven Oscars. Many of the cartoons follow the pattern set in "Puss Gets the Boot": Mammy Two-Shoes (Lilian Randolph) warns Tom that if he makes a mess or lets in any mice, he's out on his ear ("O-W-T, out!"). Jerry overhears the threat and makes trouble. The look of the characters changed more noticeably over the years than the storylines: their rounded designs didn't really suit the widescreen format, so they were drawn flatter and more angular.

It's interesting to see how some of these cartoons prefigure the later work of Hanna and Barbera: the underwater antics in "The Cat and the Mermouse" anticipate Tom and Jerry's frolic with Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet (1953); Yakky Doodle on The Yogi Bear Show (1961) was copied from Little Quacker. In several cartoons, Mammy Two-Shoes' voice has been redubbed, and the subtitles offer cleaned-up versions of her dialogue. In "Old Rockin' Chair Tom," she declares, "If you is a mouser, I is Lana Turner, which I ain't!" The subtitles read, "If you're a mouser…I'm Lana Turner, which I'm not." Whoopi Goldberg discusses the use of stereotypes in the introduction, and these later reworkings falsify history. (Unrated, suitable for ages 7 and older: cartoon violence, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Classic Tom and Jerry, the old fun ones, there were a few of the less amusing of the 60s which I never thought were up to the quality of the old ones, but most of these are the old ones, I enjoyed them as much as my boys!

    5 out of 5 stars Mammy Two-Shoes is BACK!!!.......2007-01-07

Folks...notice Lillian Randolph under the title? That's the wonderful voice behind the original Mammy Two-Shoes. Warner Bros. finally did right, at least by me. If you want the real deal, not the crappy edited one, look for 'All new introduction by Whoopie Goldberg' on the back of the box. This ensures you will not only get the original voice, but also an introduction and explanation by Whoopie. She says, and I kind of agree, that not only was the racial stereotype wrong...but that editing out said racial stereotype was just as wrong. Woo hoo!! Stop complaining and get the right DVD! Mammy Two -Shoes aside, still no explanation as to why Texas Tom is on both sets. You can't win 'em all I guess.
