Bravery, commitment to friendship, and personal sacrifice empower the weak and give rise to unlikely heroes in the magical world of Fairytopia. Elina (played by Barbie) is a wingless fairy who is mercilessly teased by a trio of spiteful fairies. Luckily for Elina, Dandelion (a fellow fairy) and Bibble (a cute little puffball) are good, supportive friends. When the evil Laverna plots to take over Fairytopia and spreads a potion that causes an epidemic of flying sickness in Fairytopia, Elina is the only fairy not overcome with the illness. It's up to Elina, Bibble, and new friend Hue to find a way to defeat Laverna and save Fairytopia from ruin. While the brightly colored animation of Fairytopia is enticing and the messages of friendship and sacrifice wholesome, the story line and characters are shallow and predictable. Worse yet, the colloquial dialogue and prepubescent attitude of many of the characters is downright annoying. While young Barbie fans will doubtless enjoy Fairytopia, Barbie Princess and the Pauper, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie Swan Lake offer richer story lines with better developed and more likeable characters. On a technical note, the DVD played fine on three test DVD players (Sony and Panasonic). (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

Believing in oneself can be difficult, even with the support of friends. The formerly wingless fairy Elina has saved Fairytopia more than once, proving herself against Fungus Maximus and turning the evil Laverna into a frog in Barbie Fairytopia and Barbie Fairytopia--Mermaidia, but she still questions her own abilities when Guardian Azura selects her to become her apprentice and learn the all-important flight of spring--a ritual which ensures another year of vitality in Fairytopia. The taunts and snobby attitudes of her fellow apprentices serve to further undercut Elina's self-esteem, but she vows to do her best to master the flight of spring and soon proves worthy of her appointment. When the trickery of Laverna threatens to stop the flight of spring and destroy Fairytopia forever, it falls to the new apprentices to save Fairytopia. Of course, Elina will play a pivotal role in the group's eventual success or failure. Prepubescent attitudes and shallowness reign among most of the apprentices, but most eventually see the error of their ways and the clear message is the importance of believing in oneself. (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

    Description

There, she meets the other fairy apprentices, chosen to learn the annual Flight of Spring and magically create the first rainbow of the season. But when the evil Laverna tries to stop the Flight, threatening to plunge Fairytopia into ten years of bitter winter, Elina and her new friends must learn that "together we are strong." But are they strong enough to defeat Laverna and bring the rainbow to life? And will Bibble, who has a loose tooth, fall in love with the adorable puffball Dizzle?

    5 out of 5 stars Fairy Fantastic!.......2007-06-25

This is a great movie and collection of stories for those of all ages. The digital work put into this is really quite amazing. I just really wish they would have Elina find a serious love interest soon! While this one focuses on the 'school' experience I feel like Mermaidia was more successful in keeping my attention, but this is still an interesting movie. The characters you really start to feel for, even Laverna. This series is really quite enjoyable and I'm 22, so parents shouldn't find this too dificult to watch over and over. When I have kids I'm going to definetly let them watch this :)

4 out of 5 stars Barbie fans will love it!.......2007-06-05

I have to say this film trilogy of Fairytopia, Mermadia and now The Magic of the Rainbow are wonderful. You can see them together, in order, or seperate and you can always follow along and figure out what is going on. I have to say that if you are having doubts about Barbie in general, these films are wonderful for young girls. Barbie is always polite, the music chosen for the movies is always classical and gloriously arranged, the lessons are timeless as well. We need more movies like these for young people, as I think we are far too modern for our own good sometimes. Every movie you see, even cartoons, have such pounding, fast paced music and storylines it almost can make your head spin. These stories are classic and timeless, I also recommend Barbie's other films, The 12 Dancing Princesses, Swan Lake and Rapunzel. Stories of friendship, loyalty and caring that will be sure to teach your little ones the things they will need to grow to be positive role models themselves someday.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best for adults but a huge hit with small children.......2007-05-22

Compared with some of the other Barbie videos I was slightly disappointed with this, but the target audience certainly were not. In the week we rented this film I have lost count of the number of times my children have watched it.

For reference, this is the third in the "Fairytopia" sequence which currently consists of:

    Fairytopia
    Mermaidia
    Magic of the Rainbow.

Before we first rented one of the Barbie videos for my daughter, I was expecting them to be trite, over-commercialised, and over-sugary. In general, however, I have been pleasantly surprised.

Yes, they do have a lot of commercial spin-offs and a high saccharine count, but the quality of the Barbie films we have subsequently bought or rented, including all three "Fairytopia" films, was significantly higher than I had originally expected. They have not just kept my children engrossed for hours - including my son as well as my daughter - but introduced them to some beautiful stories. Several - but sadly not this one - also introduced my children to some truly wonderful music.

On more than one occasion I have been listening to a CD of a classic such as Beethoven's pastoral symphony, or "The Queen of the Night's aria" from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute", and my five year old daughter has recognised and expressed appreciation of the music, and correctly remembered which Barbie film had used it. ("Magic of Pegasus" and "Mermaidia" respectively.)

So I was very disappointed that "Fairytopia - the magic of the rainbow" did not continue this tradition: no great classics this time, the musical score is just competently written filler.

The film continues the story of a Barbie as a good fairy, Elina and her "puffball" companion Bibble, who seek to protect the land of the fairies (Fairytopia) from being taken over and ruined by the evil Laverna.

This time Bibble, the "puffball" comic relief character gets a romance of his own.

Those people who enjoy criticising the way Mattel operate the Barbie franchise will not have much difficulty finding things in this production to sneer at. If you, or more importantly your kids, are allergic to an excess of twee sweetness, then this film and the Barbie videos generally may not be for them.

The female characters are all on the thin side of plausibility: I'm not worried that watching this is going to give my own daughter anorexia as she likes food too much and has a good sense of the difference between fantasy and reality. And after all, the characters in this story are fairies, complete with wings! However, if you are worried that your children may be forming an unrealistic idea about how thin a healthy female body shape is, it is not quite impossible that this film may contribute to it.

But on the plus side: it is beautifully made, it will hold the attention of most small children for long enough for the typical exhausted parent to clear the mess they have made in several rooms of the house or collapse for an hour's rest after doing so. And there are still a few more sophisticated jokes thrown in, so you won't be completely bored to death if you decide to watch it with your offspring.

Overall this is not, in my opinion, quite as good as some of the previous Barbie videos, including the first two Fairytopia" titles, but anything which can hold my children's attention as well as this film did clearly has something going for it.

Having rented the title to try it out, I will be buying it for my children, probably as part of the triple DVD set with all three "Fairytopia" titles.

My grandaughter loved this dvd. She watches it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars pretty fun way to spend some time with young girls.......2007-05-13

We grabbed some popcorn and snuggled up on the couch and watched Magic of the Rainbow. It has a decent story and characters for young girls. The music is nice and the animation is pleasing. My girls, 6 and 8, sat through the whole thing and were entranced. They giggled and ooohed and ahhed their way to the end. They loved the end most of all---no details---we won't give it away.

Hi, this is BARBIE LOVER (again) and this movie is pretty cool.It doesn't have anything TRULY scary in it for me. (Swan lake: evil villain's red eyes are so freaky)

SPOILER:Elina is a fairy without wings. She longs to fly like the other fairies, but they all tease her.Meanwhile, the evil fairy Laverna (twin to Fairytopia's ruler the Enchantress) has kidnapped the guardian fairies in order to take over fairytopia. The fairies at the Magic Meadow have trouble flying because this green smoke thing makes them unable to fly.Elina decides to go to the guardian fairy Azura for help.Dandelion,Elina's best friend and Bibble the cute puffball(what is a puffball, anyway?) go with her. Elina also meets other new friends like Hue,(a big, beautiful butterfly) and Dahlia the dryad. But Laverna kidnapped all the guardian fairies and Elina's friends,so Elina has to face Laverna alone. But she gets 'hypnotized' by Laverna to make her ruler of Fairytopia. But Elina resists when its too late, and destroys Laverna and frees her friends.(to know how she did it,get the movie)Together they save Fairytopia and Elina gets a very special gift(get the movie to find out.) End of SPOILER

Bible is sort of cute;the only word that he says that I can understand is ''Elina-poof'' which means Elina,I think.Hue and Topaz (guardian fairy)have cool accents(that's what I look for in a movie,I don't know why.) Ruby and Topaz are my fave guardian fairies. There are some funny scenes in the movie, too. This movie is great for little kids but I'm 10 yrs. old and I like it.(please DON'T call me a baby!) Bravery, commitment to friendship, and personal sacrifice empower the weak and give rise to unlikely heroes in the magical world of Fairytopia.

5 out of 5 stars For the kids.......2007-06-14

I gave this 5 stars because my daughter loves it.

    5 out of 5 stars Cool Movie!.......2007-04-10

This movie is great for little kids but I'm 10 yrs. old and I like it.(please DON'T call me a baby!) It's good for fantasy lovers, too. So buy this if you have a little girl(um,6-9,maybe) in your family that loves Barbie and fairies! BARBIE LOVER Please vote on my review! :-)

PS that kid who said on the Barbie Fairytopia Crystal doll reviews "Die,Fairytopia. This doll should marry the devil!".he/she should be quiet and :-x,because he/she is hurting other people's feelings, including mine.

5 out of 5 stars 4 year old loves it!.......2007-01-12

I am very suprised by the quality of the barbie movies. Again, this movie is no exception. It has a cutness factor to it. The rule we have in our house is, if Zoe wants to play dres up she has to act like Barbie, because barbie is kind and thoughtfull just like the movies. The only things is, I cant figure out what kind of animal Bible is.

    5 out of 5 stars I HOPE THIS HELPS!.......2007-01-09
