Description

Popeye first appeared in a 1929 daily comic strip called Thimble Theater by Elsie Segar and caught the country by storm. Popeye had nothing but his wits, a funny way of talking, and a crush on Olive Oyl. His fame eventually caught the attention of the Max Fleischer Studio and by 1933 Popeye had made his big screen debut in a Betty Boop short entitled Popeye The Sailor. The WWII years brought change to the spinach munching sailorman. In 1942, Popeye's uniform changed permanently to Navy whites and the same year, Paramount took over the production studio from the Fleischer brothers and renamed it Famous Studios, which continued to produce some superb entries in the Popeye series. In today's politically correct cartoon landscape of talking sponges and ninja turtles, Popeye is a welcome reminder of a simpler era. This special Double-DVD Collector's Edition contains 34 Popeye cartoons from the Fleischer and Famous Studios period, including the three Fleischer 'Color Specials' Sinbad ('36), Ali Baba ('37) and Aladdin ('39) -- some of the very best ever produced. All cartoons have been digitally restored and remastered from the best 35mm and 16mm film materials available. Bonus Features: Commentary by noted animation historian Jerry Beck| Popeye Classic Movie Poster Gallery| Special Collector's Edition "Liner Notes" Booklet written by Jerry Beck| Animated Motion Menus. Specs: 1-DVD5 + 1-DVD9; Dolby Digital Mono; 258 minutes; Color/B&W; 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA - NR; Year - 1936-57; SRP - $19.99.

5 out of 5 stars Popeye DVD.......2007-05-07

I noticed some of the reviews were mixed. Well, my kids LOVED this DVD. They loved it so much, I had to hide the DVD in order to take a break from Popeye and his friends. Yes, the clarity isn't perfect, however, it by all means is not dismal. I saw nothing wrong with the clairty and I can honestly say that my kids wouldn't care if there was a problem. They just want to see what silly thing Popeye is up to next. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who loves Popeye or wants to introduce their kids to Popeye of yesteryear.

5 out of 5 stars Popeye 75th Anniversary DVD Set.......2007-02-10

My girls, ages 2 and 5 loved these old Popeye cartoons, especially the 5 year old who sat mezmerized ! As for my opinion...the cartoons brought back a host of happy childhood memories, and it was kind of comforting to hear the Popeye theme song in the living room !

5 out of 5 stars Popeye The Sailor Man.......2006-07-15

At last a DVD collection that shows Popeye at his best. This brought back a lot of memories from when I was an avid watcher of his cartoons on TV. My only negative comment is I wish there was at least another Disc to this Popeye tribute. This is one for you to sit down and watch with your children, grandchildren or both. I only hope that a Volume Two is in the works like the Looney Tunes Volume 1, 2 and 3. The commentaries also offer another insight to the spinach eating hero.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best..............2005-10-20

Cartoons produced are in this DVD. I join other reviewers that lament the exclusion of the very best of the Popeye series; namely the great black and whites that the Fleischer studios produced in the 1930's. Those early cartoons are what made Popeye a name to be feared by all would be bad guys. The fight scenes are hilarious as is the dialog among the actors. I never was endeared to the Famous Studios renderings. They were made for younger audiences and don't have the ability to hold the attention of general movie goers. Perhaps we'll see the really good stuff appear someday. In the meantime there is no better collection of the battling old spinach eater available so go ahead and enjoy this DVD set.

5 out of 5 stars The best popeye DVD!.......2005-05-19

Before this one you could't really say there was a good popeye DVD around but all that has changed, popeye fans can't miss this one!

2 out of 5 stars Almost not worth the two dollars.......2004-11-05

I'm a Fleischer fan, so the prospect of having a copy of "Alladin and His Wonderful Lamp" was very appealing to me. There's good news and bad news: it's cheap (good), but low quality and fraudulently marketed (bad).

The CD promised "Popeye and other cartoon treasures". In fact, there are two Popeye cartoons and eight "other" cartoons (seven Superman and one Woody Woodpecker). OK, "Aladdin" is 30 minutes long, but the other one ("Assault and Flattery") is not what was listed on the cover, and only 1/3 of the material is actuall Popeye. Meanwhile, Treasure Box Collection sells a DVD labeled "Superman", which is probably only 1/3 Superman. I guess the idea is to sell you an armload of them, so you actually get what you paid for eventually. Not quite bait-and-switch, but close enough for me.

The first Popeye cartoon is apparently pirated from another distributor. Even though it's in the public domain, they edited out all but two frames of the title shot, which was inconveniently labeled "Copyright 1999 Burbank Video". Oops.

The second Popeye cartoon is "Aladdin". Video quality is abysmal. This one was probably also pirated from a bad VHS tape. BUT it's a fabulous cartoon, even in a lousy stolen copy. For $2, you can't really go wrong.

If you're a big Popeye fan, all the cartoons you're looking for are on the "Betty Boop" disc. Only two or three are Fleischer productions, while the rest are the awful stuff from the late '40s and '50s.

So, if you want Popeye, buy Betty Boop. If you want Superman, buy Popeye. If you want Betty Boop, buy ...?

2 out of 5 stars Still Not "It".......2004-03-30

The only studio that can properly release POPEYE shorts is Warner Bros, since WB has the copyright to the Fleischer/Famous POPEYE cartoon library. But, Warner Bros has not reached a deal with King Features Syndicate (which owns the copyright to the "Thimble Theater" characters) to release POPEYE cartoons on DVD yet. So, what do we have here, then?

      Volume 1
If these cartoons had been released by Warner Bros, they would have been the real deal. However, all the cartoons that are presented here have already been released on a VHS tape (I wouldn't be surprised if they had been transferred directly from that tape onto this DVD). In other words, these are the ONLY Fleischer POPEYE shorts that are already available to the public.

The three two-reel Three-Color-Technicolor specials ("Popeye Meets Sindbad the Sailor," "Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves," and "Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp") have already been released on many second-rate VHS tapes and DVDs. These films are public domain and are NOT digitally restored for this DVD release. (These three cartoons are being restored to their original, theatrical glory by Warner Bros as I am writing this. Jerry Beck has already seen the restored version of "Sindbad" and he says it's astonishing, brilliant, fascinating, breathtaking...Mr. Beck is the guy to be trusted.)

Now, regarding the B&W cartoons on Volume 1...."I'm in the Army Now" and "Customers Wanted" are two "cheaters." Both cartoons feature footage from earlier cartoons (granted, the recycled Fleischer footage is much more interesting than the KFS or Hanna-Barbera POPEYEs). "I Never Changes My Altitude" and "The Paneless Window Washer" (mainly animated by W. Bowsky) are truly amazing cartoons. They feature frantic, energetic, hilarious fistfights between Popeye and Bluto. These two films are worthier than Volume 2 and Volume 3 together. "Little Swee'Pea" (animated by S. Kneitel) is an OK Fleischer short. Swee'Pea in this short is Olive's (adopted?) son, whom Popeye takes to the zoo (where the "trouble" begins). This cartoon was featured on Winstar Home Entertainment's "The Great Animation Studios - Fleischer Studios." The cartoon displays some amazing three-dimensional backgrounds, an illusion achieved through the Fleischers' innovative Stereoptical process. Finally, "A Date to Skate," while not one of my favourite POPEYE cartoons, is a true Fleischer picture, which contains Jack Mercer's (Popeye) hilarious under-the-breath mutterings and an interesting example of the Fleischeresque self-reflexivity.

      Volume 2 and Volume 3
These two volumes in this series offer nothing more than the same bunch of the public-domain Famous Studios shorts from the 1950s that we have seen so many times on a number of public-domain VHS tapes and DVDs (the only B&W cartoon: "Me Musical Nephews" was featured on the aforementioned VHS tape)...And, taking into account that it is only Warner Bros that can restore these cartoons to their original glory, what we have here is a collection of déjà vu unremastered shorts.

True Popeye fans are still praying (even myself, and I am not religious) for Warner Bros and King Features Syndicate to transcend their materialistic urges and grow above their bureaucratic narrow-mindedness by finally reaching a deal to release the restored Fleischer (and Famous) POPEYE DVD collection (à la Disney Treasures)...That would be a true celebration of our favourite one-eyed, pipe-smoking, spinach-chomping grizzled mariner's 75th birthday.
