A luciously animated but unpleasant and inconsistent misfire from a fine animator........2007-05-17

Around the late 1970's, animator Don Bluth, frustrated with the output his company, Disney was churning, defected from the Mouse House to form his own studio. His first production, THE SECRET OF NIMH, was a brilliant feature that still holds up well to this day. This was followed by AN AMERICAN TAIL and THE LAND BEFORE TIME, both of which were made under the involvement of Steven Spielberg and were commercially successful. Although none of those two films had the dark adult appeal of NIMH, they still are very charming, enjoyable features for both children and grown-ups. But before long, Don Bluth had his first major misfire with ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN; critics were especially harsh on this film, and matters weren't helped by the fact that it opened alongside Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Considering that the movie has such a friendly-sounding title, one would expect ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN to be pleasant family fare. Instead Bluth provides a surprisingly dark story involving gambling, deceit, crime, mistreatment, and murder. That itself is not a problem for an animated feature per say, but it does call into question over whether the film is for children. On the other hand, it's hard to say whether adults will find much to enjoy in ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN. In short, it's a movie with a major identity crisis.

Set in a dreary junkyard of New Orleans, the movie starts out when Charlie B. Barkin, a rough-and-tumble German shepherd, is run over by a car courtesy of his former gambling casino partner, a nasty, cigar-puffing pitbull, Carface. Before you know it, Charlie finds himself in heaven, albeit by default. Here a whippet angel, Annabelle, tells him that "all dogs go to heaven because unlike people, dogs are usually loyal and kind." This line represents the confused nature of the movie, since the dogs in the movie, the whippet aside, are presented as anything but.

Upon realizing that he's been murdered, Charlie steals his way back to Earth and plots to get even with Carface. With the reluctant help of his dachshund pal Itchy, Charlie "rescues" Carface's prize, AnneMarie, a human girl who can talk to animals (in order to predict who will win the rat races). Charlie claims that he will help the little cutie find her a family, but in reality he is using her skills to win fortunes at the race so that he can build a more elaborate casino of his own to bring Carface down. Although he refuses to admit it, Charlie does grow to love AnneMarie...

The concept of the story isn't as problematic as the execution. Aside from the human girl AnneMarie and a flamboyant musical alligator who appears about three-quarters through (with the vocal pipes of Ken Page), none of the other characters emerge as likeable, nor frankly, are even worth caring about. Unfortunately, that also applies to Charlie; in trying to make him an anti-hero, the script (composed by more than ten writers) only succeeds in rendering the character TOO unlovable. As such, the audience feels no empathy for Charlie, and worse, his redemption at the end of the movie does not come across as convincing. (Further damaging to the character is the disappointingly uncharismatic vocal performance from Burt Reynolds.)

Besides the lack of an endearing lead, the movie's other problem is in the structure of the story. The slowly-paced plot jumps all over the place and makes a habit of throwing in extra scenes which serve no purpose but to pad out the movie's running time. The aforementioned musical alligator (who resides in a danky sewer infested with native rats) seems to have been thrown in from nowhere, as does a scene where Charlie tries to show his generosity to AnneMarie by feeding a pack of pastel-colored pups pizza. The whole screenplay feels like a rough first draft; a bit more polish could have made this a tighter, impactful story.

Matters are not helped by the lackluster musical numbers by Charlie Strouse and T.J. Kuenster (AnneMarie's song and the gator's ballad are the only good ones; the latter in particular benefits from Ken Page's mellifluous vocal) or the uneven voice cast. As mentioned, Burt Reynolds' stiff and lifeless Charlie detracts from his already unlikeable character even further (the only exception is a fiery confession to Itchy about his true intentions toward the end). Dom DeLuise as Itchy is pretty good, but he's had better roles, notably Tiger in AN AMERICAN TAIL and Jeremy in THE SECRET OF NIMH. Ken Page, as mentioned, is awesome in anything he does, but his character has such a small part that his overall contribution is unremarkable at best. Similarly wasted are Loni Anderson (as a collie who once sired a litter with Charlie), Melba Moore, and Charles Nelson Reilly. Judith Barsi as AnneMarie is probably the only voice that comes across as truly memorable, partially because her character is the sole legitimately likeable one in this depressing and joyless show.

Barsi aside, the only real positive about ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN is the animation. Technically, this film has some of the most imaginative visuals from Bluth's team (by 1980's standards, that is), particularly a frightening scene where Charlie has a nightmare about ending up in a fiery underworld ruled by a gargantuan satanic canine-demon. If anything, the movie is more of a triumph of animation than storytelling.

On the whole, however, I cannot recommend ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN as good entertainment. Even though I recognize that the movie has its fans and the climax does admittingly provide some energy and a moving conclusion, the overall package is not in the same league as Bluth's better efforts. Animation buffs will marvel at the lush artistry, but by the time it's over, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN could very well leave a bad taste in your mouth.

GREAT SERIES of DVD... ALL Dogs..........2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. It does have quite a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

Good but dark.......2007-01-13

I first saw this movie when I was about 8 years old. Even though it was rated G there were several parts in this movie that scared the daylights out of me and gave thousands of nightmares for several years after I saw it the first time. This movies content has several impropriate content stuff in it for those under thirten. This includes contents of gambling drinking, lying, stealing, revenge, murder, kidnapping and other. I don't recomend leting any under thirteen watch this movie unless there supermature or super supervised. The two most intense parts in this movie were the dream seqeunce when the main characters a German shephard Charlie dreams he is pulled down into hell by a Tornado. The other part that scared me the most was when Charlie and Ann Merry are captured by these native mice and for reasons never explained are offered as scarfices to a Shamu size alligator. For those of you that have young sibglings under 13 the All dogs Christmas charol maybe the only all dogs movie they may be able to watch. You don't have to listen to what I say but I thought I'd just warm you so you might not have nigtmares until you are in your mid teens. I must go now have a nice day.

So much more than a cartoon!.......2006-12-22

As a child, there was no better cartoon than `All Dogs go to Heaven', since I was such a dog lover. As a child you watch a cartoon for the animation not for the story. As an adult though you tend to get more out of films like this because, while being a cartoon, `All Dogs go to Heaven' is so much more. With a moral that is so profound films of today tackle it over and over, this film succeeds mainly because we are given a timeless lesson in the most unlikely of places.

The story revolves around Charlie (voiced by Burt Reynolds) and his partner in crime Itchy (voiced by Dom DeLuise) who are murdered by crime lord Carface (voiced by Vic Taybak). After ascending to heaven only to return back to earth in order to live a life of crime, Charlie comes across Anne-Marie (voiced by Judith Barsi), a young girl who is being used by Carface to further his gambling efforts. At first stealing her away for his own selfish gain, Charlie begins to form a strong friendship with Anne-Marie that is soon compromised by not only his own morally corrupt tendencies, but also the growing dangers of Carface and his bloodlust towards Charlie.

Yes, as some have mentioned this cartoon borders on the dark overtones, but remember that the reason this is so `scary' if you should so call it is because as adults we can see the truth inside the sad story, but as children they will miss that entirely and will be absorbed in the animation and the `cute little puppies'...I guaranty it. I watched this almost everyday when I was a toddler...and I slept fine. It's only now that the story really haunts me.

Really, the only reason I'm writing this review is to debunk the "too dark for children" issue. C'mon people! Has the world gone soft or something? I watched this film when I was at least five years old back in the early 1990's and I thought it was incredibly satisfactory. Ya, it was scary in some parts. Ya, it was violent. So what? I don't remember getting any nightmares or crying or anything. In fact, the gritty tone of this movie was what made it so special. Most animated films these days are so horribly politically correct and "dumbed down" for children that I don't even know how they can stand to watch them themselves.

Charlie, the protagonist of the story, I have to agree with the naysayers, really is an evil character. He lies, cheats, and steals all throughout the movie. Near the end, he says "Look, I don't care about the girl! I tell her things now and then. I pretend to be her best friend but its bologna!" But it's thanks to this horrible side of him that makes the climax of the film so powerful. If you haven't seen it yet, then I won't give it away specifically, but basically what happens is he overcomes his former self and does the right thing.

What I'm really trying to say is don't judge too harshly just because it's a little non-ethical with it's storytelling compared to today's standards. The movie really does have an honest side and is a welcome addition to anyone's collection.

While it pales in comparison to the outstanding animation of its predecessor, Don Bluth's imaginative if somewhat graceless All Dogs Go to Heaven, this 1995 sequel has some nice moments of its own. Charlie Sheen replaces Burt Reynolds as the voice of Charlie Barkin, the afterlife-stranded pooch who sought vengeance against his killer in the previous film but instead discovered the joys of earthly love and community. This time, a bored Charlie, looking for a little adventure, reteams with his old pal Itchy (voiced by Dom DeLuise) to retrieve Gabriel's Horn after it's stolen. Dropping down from Dog Heaven to take on his old nemesis (and killer), Carface (Ernest Borgnine), Charlie falls for a sexy Irish setter (Sheena Easton) and helps a boy caught in a jam. Featuring grand pop songs by the legendary songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 provides kids with a simpler story than Bluth's original film, as well as less unsettling violence. Now, I grew up watching All Dogs Go To Heaven. I probably watched it twice a week! Even though the storyline was pretty confusing, it was by far the "best movie ever!" And when I heard about All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, i was so excited! As soon as the library got it we rushed and got it. And you know what, I fell in love with Charlie and Itchy all over again. It was just like being a little kid again! And I like how they made the "devil" not as scary. The devil, known in this movie as Red, is actually somewhat likeable. In the original, I had to prety much close my eyes when they showed Charlie's dream about...h***! He was like this big dinosaur! In the second He was cat. Which makes sense in a movie where dogs are the good guys...Dogs go to heaven, and cats, well, don't.

Also, in the original, it was music-based and I love that they kept the entertaining music alive in the 2nd. And in the 1st ADGTH, it seemed like there were scenes added without any explaination, and it was kind of hard to follow. So, I'm glad that ADGTH2 has a straight forward storyline. Well, to rap it all up, i think both movies deserve 2 thumbs up.

What is the deal. Cant Hollywood leave well enough alone. How many classic animated movies are they going to ruin with sequels? Let me think, their was Balto 2, Little Mermaid 2, Aladdin 2 and three, Secret of Nimh 2, Land before time 2,3,4,5,6,7 etc. enough already. Next thing you know they'll be making a Lion King 2, and a Buity and the Beast 2. O wait, they already did that didn't they. All the movies I have named were great originals but God awful sequels. ADGTH 2 is just as bad. If you loved the original, STAY AWAY FROM ITS SEQUAL.

Good Buy Just to Compare the Two.......2006-10-10

This item lost two stars for the second movie; having both films on hand and being able to actually compare the works helped to remind me just why sequels to Don Bluth films stopped working after Bluth was gone: the people who made them were too stupid to understand the messages behind the original subject matter.

The first film, All Dogs Go To Heaven, is lauded by overconservative parents who believe there are too many adult themes: drinking, smoking, gambling, death, etc. What they fail to understand however is that Bluth never portrayed any of these things in a positive light. In Bluth's kiddie flicks, he doesn't treat children like they're stupid. These elements that you'd never find in a rated G movie today were still handled delicately, in the sense that no one who appears to take part in any of these questionable practices are happy -- a very smart message on his part. (And watching All Dogs for the first time since I was seven, I'd like to point out that the only time I, as a kid, ever paid attention to people smoking or drinking on TV was when an ADULT in the room would make a big deal out of it. Your kids don't care, people. They see the dogs are singing and eating porkchops.)

You follow the story of a smooth-talking but grumpy German Shepherd by name of Charlie B. Barkin, who lives a life of vice in 1930's New Orleans. After escaping prison (ie: the pound), he is murdered by his former business partner, Carface, who doesn't wish to share the profits of their gambling practice now that Charlie's come back. Charlie goes to heaven by default, because "all dogs go to heaven", but he cheats his way into being sent back, warned that he may never return, in order to get back at Carface. He discovers a little orphan girl who can talk to animals, Anne Marie, who Carface has been using to fix the races and games in his establishment. Charlie befriends her by promising he'll help her find a family, and he convinces her to help him win at a number of games to start his own new establishment, all the while telling her that, like Robin Hood, he is giving to the poor. Slowly, he begins to develop a strong bond with her, and out of a necessity to take care of her, he begins to learn the error of his ways and is placed on the road to redemption.

I've seen reviewers praise the second film as better than the first, and I have to stop and ask them if they're blind. The second film is terrible, in all accounts by which animated sequels always are: the voice acting and animation are beyond subpar (it depresses me to think this actually went into theatres when, like Disney's "Return of Jafar" it really only stood as a musical tie-in to the up and coming TV series, which also flopped after two seasons). Charlie Sheen as Charlie B. Barkin is no Burt Reynolds, and and the original character of Charlie was completely lost in this film. His scounderel antics are seriously downplayed, to the point of making him a near parody of his original self for a Nick Jr audience, one that does not need to be talked down to in such a way. His impressive voice, love of music and natural charm -- all elements that were part of the original -- are not well portrayed here, if at all. Charlie's not even drawn the same way. Similar things can be said for all returning characters. There were plot inconsistancies up the wazoo (Charlie and Itchy were around in the 30s, and the film appears to have moved them forward to a more modern time -- and across the country, to boot). The romance plotline was heavily forced, also, and following after a film that didn't need romance to push Charlie into redemption. All in all: disappointing film, and a shining example of why newer audiences can't properly appreciate the innovations that Don Bluth brought to animated film.

After retrieving Gabriel's Horn in the 1996 movie, All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, the irrepressible German shepherd Charlie Barkin and his loyal dachsund sidekick, Itchy Itchiford, are not interested in returning to heaven; rather, they continue their canine adventures on Earth in MGM Animation's television series of the same name, which aired from 1996-1999. Both the movie sequel and television series are loosely based on Don Bluth's 1989 film, All Dogs Go To Heaven, though Bluth was not involved in these spinoff projects and the only returnee from the original film is Dom DeLuise (again voicing the part of Itchy). Set in present day San Francisco, the television series includes many of the characters from the film sequel, though Charlie and Sasha are now mostly friends, Charlie and Itchy live as bachelors, and Carface plays a lesser role. "Friends to the Rescue" is a DVD compilation of four 22-minute episodes from the show's first season, following the escapades of Charlie and Itchy as newly inducted guardian angels, assigned various "missions" by the watchful whippet archangel, Anabelle. Many of the voiceovers will be familiar including Sheena Easton (Sasha), Bebe Neuwirth (Annabelle), and Ernest Borgnine (Carface). The newcomer to the cast is Steven Weber who lends his voice as Charlie in a lineup of palatable (if not mildly bland) storylines offering tidy lessons in friendship and kindness. The best of the bunch is the humorous "Cyrano de Barkinac" when Itchy falls for a lovely pooch name Bess and enlists the help of "Charlie's Charm School" to win her favor.
