The animated "Goodnight Gorilla" remains true to Peggy Rathman's irresistible artwork and features an adorable monkey who outsmarts the Zookeeper by unlocking all the animals cages and then following him home to bed. The addition of a jazzy "Variations on Brahms Lullaby" and understated narration by Anthony Edwards enhance an already terrific story. This collection of stories is absolutely wonderful, except for...'How do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight' is unnecessarily scary for little ones. The music is dark and menacing at times, and the dinosaurs are a bit too threatening. The 'demanding a piggyback ride' episode looks like the dinosaur is attacking the mother and she actually screams! My [...] still wants to watch it, but can only tolerate it while clinging to me for reassurance. I would have preferred more whimsical music and childlike dinosaur behavior, but older kids will probably like their dinosaurs with some teeth. That said, it is well done visually and the narration by Jane Yolen is excellent. It's a fun story.

Now that's done, and here are my thoughts on the many many other good things about this DVD:

My son loves every story and asks for each one repeatedly. I can and do watch them over and over again without getting sick of them, and I have my favorites as well (The Hat and Patrick).

Goodnight Gorilla: Actually works better as an animation than a book (just my opinion). Simply charming.

Happy Birthday Moon: Although I don't really love this one, my son really does and that's all that counts after all.

The Napping House: I didn't think my son would like this one, but he loves it. I love it too. Very soothing, simple and sweet.

The Paper Boy: Magical! The animation is beautiful and the musical score soars with grace and feeling. Forest Whittaker's narration is understated and brilliant.

Patrick: Just Music and animation, but a great story full of joy. The music is brilliant and the animation visually exciting. Love it!

The Hat: A wonderful story full of wit and humor. A magical hat, a good man down on his luck, heroic deeds rewarded, and a happy ending. My favorite!

My son really likes to watch this DVD and does get tired when watching the relaxing stories to put him to sleep. Highly recommend.

Favorite books come to life.......2007-02-26

This video is excellent for giving the stories more depth. Especially good for pairing with the literature itself and don't forget to look at the extra bonus stories. I'm a special ed teacher and I find them invaluable. The students ask for them over and over again.

Every story is fantastic! The perfect bedtime DVD!.......2007-02-17

We purchased the DVD in March 2006 when our daughter was 1 1/2. She hasn't tired of watching it yet. We have other DVDs including others from the Scholastic Video Collection. This is by far the Best and continues to be the most watched. Our daughter wants to watch every story. For those older parents, who remember Parent's Press Books from the 70's, "The Hat" will bring back memories. Highly recommend.

Nice for winding down at night........2007-01-19

My daughter is 2 and loves the quiet tone of the Goodnight Moon, Happy Birthday Moon, and Paperboy. We usually skip the dinosaur one because the creatures are a little scary for her at 2, but would be appropriate for kids a little older who would appreciate the story that is being told. All in all a great DVD with some fine actors lending their voices (Anthony Edwards, Forest Whitaker.)

Wonderful Books.......2006-09-05

This video is actually books with a animated format. It is a great way to introduce your child to books. Each book is about 3-5 minutes in length. Not an exciting format for real young children but a very good format for school age.

Save your money.......2006-07-15

My children love the DVD of the Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - it is wonderful. We also have the book "Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type" and it is a favorite. I was looking for more educational and interesting "book on DVD" like Caterpillar for our 3 and 5 year olds to watch for our trip home from Florida. I found this collection, and based on the positive reviews, I ordered with second day shipping. I was thrilled when they arrived. We went through the DVDs one by one - and each is only 20 minutes long, as opposed to the normal 1 - 1.5 hours of current DVDs. Also the illustrations were a little primitive... and a couple of the stories were just down right scary, and at one point my 5 year old wanted me to turn it off. One story has a song that goes over and over and over again about a child saying "I don't care..." and you guessed it - for the next 3 days that is all our 3 year old said. We got home a couple of days ago, and I am returning this immediately. I think "Click Clack Moo" is a good DVD, but that 20 minute DVD alone is NOT worth $[...]. Save your money and get the Eric Carle book on DVD and any of the Curious George ones.

Great in the car.......2005-12-19

I love these videos. They are perfect for the car. Instead of watching movies, they are watching books and it reinforces what they learn in school. Great for all ages.

Scholastic rides again!.......2005-09-19

The great thing about this set is that by preschool, the kids are familiar with the stories and they love to have them repeated in a visual manner. These are great to have quiet time with and my kids have even taken them to school for rest time and the teachers love them, as it is merely a book on tape with pictures!
