Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor.

The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-27

This is probabily the second best film in the world-next to Pocahontas that is. The songs are all really catchy and the animation is spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars So funny! .......2007-05-23

This is probably one of my favorite Disney movies. (This and Emperor's New Groove). I love when Disney has a sense of humor and you can clearly see it in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Always a great movie!.......2007-05-13

I loved this movie when I was a kid. Even now, when I watch it again, it still is just as great. Perfect for the entire family!

3 out of 5 stars Good, could have been great.......2007-03-19

Being Chinese, I really wanted to love this movie, but it lacks a few key story elements that set "Masterpiece" animated features such as 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Aladdin' apart from the rest. The animation and sound are fine as they should be and the mountain pass scenes are really cool, especially the part where the huge Mongol hoard comes charging down towards the protagonists in an endless wave of cavalry. The main musical theme "Reflections" is also well written and expresses Mulan's feelings and desires with emotion.

My issues with the movie:

1) The bad guy is certainly bad. He looks bad and he acts bad. However, there isn't really any clear logic or motivation to why he is doing what he's doing. In Beauty and the Beast, Gaston is driven by his egomaniacal desire to have Belle, the one woman in the village who shows no interest in him at all. In Mulan, the bad guy rapes and pillages China because... well... just because. There doesn't appear to be any goal or motivation for him. He destroys simply because he can, which is certainly possible, but makes for a rather flat character. Gaston, Jafar, and Ursula are much more interesting villains.

2) Mulan's romantic partner is kind of a "himbo". He's a pretty boy who doesn't really do much and isn't all that bright. It's not clear to me why Mulan would really want to get together with him other than the fact that he's a good looking dude. Besides that, he doesn't add much to the story. Which leads to my next issue:

3) In the other great Disney features, the lead and their romantic interest share in the resolution of their conflicts and defeat the villian as part of the resolution of the conflict in their romance. In Aladdin, Jasmine and Aladdin battle Jafar together as part of the resolution of the problem where Aladdin lied about being a poor street kid because Jasmine is the Sultan's daughter. Ariel and Eric battle Ursula as part of the romantic conflict brought on by the fact that he is human and she is a mermaid. Eric sees that Ariel is a mermaid in the end and doesn't care. He still risks his life fighting Ursula together with Ariel. In Mulan, it's pretty much just her and the romantic part of the story is an afterthought and they never really get into the issue of resolving that she is "doing a man's job" and shouldn't be in the Chinese army as part of their romantic conflict. It just gets OK'd in the end because she saves the emperor. They don't resolve it between themselves as individuals. Actually, up until the end he still does not accept her until the emperor accepts her. Not very romantic.

4) Finally, the supporting characters don't add much to the story either. The dragon and cricket add a little comedy here and there, but not much else. Some of the soldiers in Mulan's unit had potential, but don't really fully get there.

So, overall I liked the movie, but I didn't love it. This could have been one of their classics if they spent a bit more time developing the story and characters. It looks great, but needed some more under the hood of the story.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated Disney film.......2007-02-21

Released after Pocahontas, when the Disney animated renaissance was coming to a close, this movie did not get much attention; this is unfortunate. While some of the comic relief is pained, Mulan herself is so lovingly rendered that she compensates for the groans.

Mulan, the character, is animated by Mark Henn, one of the main animators behind the beautiful and timeless Disney heroines of the 90s. Like Jasmine, Mulan's movements are feminine, lively, and nuanced, and show how much love he put into his work. Her facial expressions are subtle but clear, showing both her intelligence and her girlish immaturity. It is obvious why he was assigned to the animation of women over and over again; he is a master and considering how popular his Princesses are, I don't understand why he gets less love than Glen Keane.

Equal to Henn's animation is Ming-Na's voice acting. Her voice acting in Final Fantasy is too good; it only shows off the mediocrity of that animation. Here, though, she brings sympathy and depth to the character. Mulan to me is the perfect heroine. Her goal was not true love, she would take it, yes, but her heart seeks respect and honor first.

The plot is almost cloying but stops short at tender. Songs like A Girl Worth Fighting For are forgettable at best, but both Reflection and I'll Make a Man Out of You, the song where Mulan climbs the pole and proves herself, are classics. While sometimes irritating, Eddie Murphy's Mushu gets a few belly laughs. Still, it is the character of Mulan that makes this movie a favorite.

With less drama and more slapstick than its predecessor, Disney's Mulan II continues the animated saga of the young Chinese heroine, Fa Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga). The story picks up one month after Mulan has saved her country through bravery and determination. Revered by all, she now returns to her village and becomes engaged to General Li Shang. Wedding plans must wait, however, when the Emperor assigns the couple to a secret mission to escort his three princess daughters across China where their arranged marriages to waiting princes will secure an alliance with a rival kingdom and save China from invasion. Meanwhile, Mulan's wise-cracking guardian dragon, Mushu (voiced by Mark Moseley), realizes that if Mulan's marriage takes place, he is out of a job and so he undertakes his "18-phase master plan" of relationship sabotage to breakup the happy couple. Most of the film's jokes come from Moseley's Mushu (as quick-witted as Eddie Murphy's earlier performance), while a trio of prankish soldiers provide additional comic relief. While the film's overall effort is not as sensational as the original, it offers solid family entertainment, healthy female role models, and a handful of catchy songs. Description

The magnificent legend of MULAN continues in an all-new movie that "captures the magic of the original," says Geoffrey Kleinman of DVD Talk. The beautiful and courageous heroine is back, along with her hilarious guardian dragon Mushu, for more excitement and adventure. After saving her nation from the evil Huns, the spirited Mulan gets the surprise of her life when General Shang asks for her hand in marriage. Before the wedding, however, Mulan and Shang must complete a dangerous mission as they escort three princesses, Ting-Ting, Mei, and Su, to a distant city. The future of China hangs in the balance when, in the middle of their journey, Mulan and Shang clash over their duties. Breathing fire into all this mayhem is the mischievous Mushu, who wants to keep Mulan single as long as possible in order to keep his cushy job as her guardian dragon. Featuring irresistible new music and great wall-to-wall laughs, MULAN II is "timelessly fun and touching. You'll want to watch it again and again," raves Tony Toscano of Talking Pictures.

i enjoyed both mulans, this one is good but not as exciting as the first

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-01-31

It is really an excellent movie for all in the family. Mulan is the archetype of contrasting features such as tough but gentle, strong but terse. In this second movie, Mulan not only shows these characteristics but actually teaches them to little girls. The ending is the usual Hollywood ending, though.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel.......2007-01-19

I loved the first Mulan, as did my daughter. Which made it particularly heart breaking that the second Mulan lacked beleivable characterization, decent animation, and a coherent ending.

The characters and settings were not as expressive or richly drawn as in the original. The characters lost a great deal of the depth that we saw in the first movie. And the songs did not live up to the Disney name.

On the plus side, my 2.5 year old daughter liked it fine, but it lacks the crossover appeal to adults that makes for good kids movies. I was quite happy I didn't buy this, and would only suggest renting this if you have a child that isn't looking for depth of animation or characters.

2 out of 5 stars This movie could've been so good . . . ........2007-01-14

Have you noticed that sequels, for the most part (Toy Story 2 is an exception) just don't feel the same as the original? The music is different, the animation is different, something. You just can't quite put your finger on it; the movie bothers you somehow.

This movie does that. The story and characters were OK, but the plot could have been carried out so much better! Mushu was being selfish, although I admit the scenes when he tried to get Mulan and Shang apart made me laugh. And while the whole "duty to your heart" thing gets most people mad about this movie, I think it just wasn't done right. What I'm saying is, the movie has a decent plot but it was carried out weakly. Yeah, that's the word that describes this movie: weak.

The beginning song is just bad. I agree with the person who said they felt the scene with Mulan teaching the girls to fight was uncomfortable. It was poorly done. As with most aspects of this film, it coul've been better. The song "lesson nuber one" or whatever is terrible; I was almost to the point of cringing. The "other" "Girl We're Fighting For" was OK. Not as good as the one in the original, but really, what can you expect? Not much. I don't think many people ahve high expectations foor sequels anymore. At least, I don't.

The scenes between the princesses and warriors are funny, but too cute and quick. It could've been better. Wait, didn't I just say that?

At the end how Mushu retends to be the golden dragon or whatever is funny, but it bothers me. I mean, that's how the problem was resolved? It would be okay if they had it once in the movie and the resolution was different, but Mulan, Shang, Mushu and the princesses got what they wanted by tricking a whole country. If the country were to find out the truth, all the protagonists would be in some serious trouble and that's an understatement. (If you're confused, you probably haven't seen the movie).

I also agree with the person who said mixing modern stuff into the story was bad. It is OK for kids, but it's just too cheesy for adults.

Like I said, the movie could have been better. It does NOT "capture the majic of the original" (as the back says); the tone is completely different.

However, I must say that the scene when Shang falls into the river is done really well. It will either send chills down your spine or make you shed a few tears. I was not expecting that to be done well. The princesses' song was the best song in the whole movie. Oh, and the princesses themselves were all right characters. I like Ting-Ting the best; she seems serious but inside she's a joker. Her and Ling go great together. The other two couples go great together, too. And while Mushu's plans were practically evil, I have to admit they were funny.

And speaking of Mushu, I personally didn't find Mushu that bad, just a little naughty. He was really selfish at first about his precious pedestal, but he eventually found out that if Mulan wasn't happy, then neither was he. However, I think that he shoudn't have gotten his pedestal back. I think it sends the wrong message; that you will eventually get what you want even if you do really evil things or something. Or maybe he shouldn't have gotten it back the way he did in the movie.Anyway, just like almost evryting else, it could've been done much better.

To sum it up, the movie was poorly done. I don't even think Disney even tried to make it good. It could have been done better. I know I've said that a thousand times, but it's true.

Kids will like this movie because I can grudgingly admit it's funny, but adults will probably find it poorly done. Some aspects send the wrong message to kids, like what I already said about Mushu and his epdestal. The "duty to your heart" is a great theme, but I think it was represented falsely.

I own the movie. I suggest you rent it if you really want to see it. The back cover is wrong. It is not a "movie you want to see again and again".

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-01-05

I am a huge fan of Disney's MULAN Special Edition DVD. The only thing that disappoined me was the DVD for MULAN II did NOT provide a "Mandarin/Chinese" audio track. Mulan did.

All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas

3 stars for being Disney.

Minus 2 for not having Aladdin.

That is all.

1 out of 5 stars NINE WRONG ITEMS.......2006-12-25

I ordered the walt disney animated anthology the classic collector's set which was suppose to come with, the little mermaid, hercules, mulan, pinocchio, the jungle book, peter pan, lady and the tramp, the lion king II:simba's pride and one hundred and one dalmations instead we were sent cars, pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest, the sword in the stone, the rescuers, bedknobs and broomsticks, herbie fully loaded, miracles, and the shaggy dog....very disappointing for the kids christmas morning!

4 out of 5 stars Well priced.......2006-09-25

Despite what other reviewers are saying, this collection is a good buy! Why, price AND collectors value. Each of this dvd's are limitted addition- which DON'T get re-released. And the prices... lets go over them, according to Disney's collectors item list.

The Little Mermaid 29.99
The Jungle Book 34.99
Hercules 34.99
Mulan 34.99
Peter Pan 54.99
Pinocchio 34.99
Lady and the Tramp 34.99
Lion King II 29.99

This adds up to over $270. But the set is retailed for $500, how is this still a good deal? Well disney doesn't sell Peter pan, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp as limitted addition and they are hard to find, these prices are based on (with the excetpion of Peter Pan) what they were last officially sold at. What you find is Special and Platinum addition. Further more in 2007 Hercules and Lion II are expected to come out on Platinum, meaning the Limitted Addition ones will be worth more. Yes, limitted addition doesn't have two discs poor movie, but collector wise, its worth more.

Blockbuster has a more accurate price list for when they by these movies. To buy these BRAND NEW, the cheapest one is The Little Mermaid (not in Limitted but in Special Addition) and that is $50. Other such as Hercules are worth $75. Thats adds up to at least $600. So now, its cheaper.

More so, some of these movies have already been released in platinum, meaining they won't EVER be released again.

This is a good deal, and as you can see the so-called "collectors" who troll it haven't done any research.

For those of you who buy it just to watch it, I suggest buying the cheap platinum additions.

Also, a fact for those angered by a sequel appearing. Lion King II sold better than the orignal Lion King, and better then any other Disney Sequel. In fact, its is one of the top 20 Disney movies that sold well. Seems most Disney "fans" loved this movie (and I find it one of the only good Disney Sequels.)

For any of you wanting to start a Disney Colelction that's sure to make a return on your investment- buy this if you can afford it.

3 out of 5 stars A Comment about the reviewer "A Viewer".......2006-09-04

The older titles are not in widescreen because in the days when they came out in theatres, the theatre screens were not widescreen. So it is observing their original aspect ratio. Maybe you should do some research before you review something.

I do however not understand why Lion King II made it on this set...I hate the disney sequels.

1 out of 5 stars I agree it blows.......2006-06-27

I own all of these movies already and I can honestly tell you this collection is a rip off. They're asking way too much for so few movies. Now, you add a few more classics and make them all 2-disc special editions, then hell yeah I'll pay $500 for it. But this just isn't worth it, collection set or not.

Description

Everyone is familiar with the animated feature based on one of China's most famous legends. Here is an exquisite Chinese version of the story that holds many surprises for American audiences. A lavish production of a Beijing opera, designed for film. Magnificent costumes and sets, brilliantly choreographed martial art battle sequences, highly stylized performance, this dramatic tale represents, somehow, the soul of China. Visually stunning! Fun for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful film.......2005-06-11

Although I have not actually purchased this movie, I did see it on PBS and I have to say that the reviews given by the critic did not fully reveal how stupendous this movie is. Granted, one would need either a great love of art and theater, or a good amount of tenacity to stick to this film through its' entirety, as it is a good three hours long, nevertheless it is a very action packed production and the singers voices sound completely gorgeous. Also, the movie is very much in line with the historical ballads and legends, and in regards to the acting, well, there are just not enough good things that can be said about the Chinese Opera. Suffice it to say that giving this film something as simplistic as a rating of five stars, is just no where near a good enough critique of it.
It is perfectly beautiful.

    1 out of 5 stars Really Bad...........2003-05-02

I strongly recommend renting this video before purchasing. Mostly, because it is quite simply, awful. I've always been a big fan of Animation, but this video was sub direct-to-video quality. In this film the plot is butchered to include, (amongst other things), a talking panda, a dragon and an evil skull-uniform-wearing general complete with underground fort, a legion of badies in skull ying/yang armor, and an American bald eagle (!)

The good: The only (somewhat) well-designed character was Mulan and her Grandfather. There is a somewhat decent message at the beginning about not judging people by their appearance/color of skin, which I felt was appropriate.

The bad: It's too bad the animators didn't take the movie's message to heart when they chose to draw most of the Chinese in an ugly, stereotyped and exaggerated way. The art had me cringing! And if the good guys were ugly, the `evil' villains, looking more like trolls than people. Also, the voice acting was terrible. Mulan sounded like a cranky teenager reading her lines completely deadpan. The rest of the Chinese sounded like they were voiced by one guy, with a Brittish accent!

Overall, while I expected to find this movie MILDLY entertaining, instead it was dime-store anime at its worst. Watch at your own risk.

    1 out of 5 stars Wait a minute here........2000-04-12

This ain't the original version. Neither is that Disney thing. Both videos are pretty poor retellings of a centuries-old poem.

If you want the original version, go to the book section of this site and look for the poetry collections _The Flowering Plum and the Palace Lady_, or stick "Ballad of Mulan" into a search engine.

5 out of 5 stars This Anime (Not the Disney Version) is Incredible.......2000-03-22

No, this is not the Disney version starring Eddie Murphy as a hip, street-talking little dragon thing. This is the original Japanese version of the film that Disney bought the rights to. Please note that most anime is not intended for a young audience. There is cursing, violence, and blood shed. However, it is an excellent movie and has a very engrossing plot and detailed characters. The Disney version has nothing on the original's story.

    5 out of 5 stars MIND-BLOWING.......2000-01-24

This is a WONDERFUL film. It far surpasses the Disney version. The animation is terrific, the dialogue is sharp and insightful, and the plot is spellbinding. The artistry in this film is on par with such cinematic masterpieces as "The Godfather" or "Gone With The Wind." I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this DVD!

1 out of 5 stars Not Disney is the only good thing..........1999-12-31

When I read reviews of people complaining about this movie because it is not the Disney version, I see that as a good thing. If people who like Disney don't like an anime, that's good; it usually means there is substance to the film.

However, I must break down and agree with the Disney-lovers. This is the worst animated show I have ever seen. It is worse than the Beatlejuice cartoon. I'm sure the dialogue was written by some common household pet. The voice acting made the dubbed version of MD Geist look like a masterpiece. The animation, oh my... The only way to describe its quality is to ask: Remember the old Amiga cartoons that were around in the late eighties? Those were works of art compared to the animation from this film. I think the sound effects/dialogue were mixed by someone deaf or insane (or both). Sound effects were mostly inaudible compared to the dialogue. I think the fight sequences (all two of them with the two whole sword swings in each) were storyboarded by a three year old. Wasn't Mulan supposed to be in a war or something? Perhaps something at least on the scale of a bar brawl? Not according to this film...

Have I badmouthed this movie enough? Well don't take my word for it, this movie is so bad there are no credits. I guess everyone who worked on this movie were scared to put their names on it (and this is the ONLY thing that indicates that those who made this film have greater mental prowess than, say, a toasteroven).

4 out of 5 stars mulan ii.......2007-03-29

i enjoyed both mulans, this one is good but not as exciting as the first

Mulan did.
