Bruce Hornsby & the Range - Rockpalast Live

Like Bruce Hornsby himself, this concert DVD is a no-frills event, focusing entirely on the music that Hornsby composes and plays with virtuoso flair. Recorded for German television on October 16, 1990, this performance finds Hornsby at the peak of his popularity, poised at a Baldwin grand piano with his sleeves rolled up, and kicking immediately into a full-blooded rendition of "Night on the Town" that sets the tone for a vibrant 90-minute set. There's nothing dazzling about the four-camera video coverage, and the sound quality is merely adequate, so you're not missing much if your attention roams from the screen. But Hornsby (also on accordion for a few songs) is as impressive as ever, from his biggest hit ("The Way It Is") to lesser-known songs ("The Show Goes On") that are equally good. Consider this a live CD with minimalist visuals, but for devoted fans it's a welcome addition to Hornsby's other recordings. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A multidimensional triple threat, talented singer, songwriter and keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby triumphantly emerged onto the music scene in the mid-Eighties with such memorable hits as "The Way It Is," "Mandolin Rain" and "Jacob's Ladder." Renowned for his impeccable musical skills, Hornsby's elegant keyboard flourishes and sophisticated and literate wordplay helped make him into a superstar. Now viewers can catch a glimpse of the dynamic Williamsburg, Virginia native in action on the concert stage in this exclusive live Rockpalast performance from 1990.

Enjoyable.......2007-06-12
IMO if you like Bruce you will like this. Nothing exceptional, no chances taken, just a couple of hours with Bruce. The band meshed nicely, the only stand out being the drummer, other than Bruce. The sound mix was average, the video good. It's enjoyable.
if you like improvisation, you'll like this.......2007-04-04
Hornsby's musical talent is phenomenal. Sound quality on this DVD is fine although some of Sonny Emery's fine cymbal work is lost in the mix. I agree with others that the video quality is shy. Look at Boz Scagg's Greatest Hits Live for an example of superior sound & picture reproduction. Bruce's voice still commands attention after all the years performing. Outstanding tracks I think are "The Way It Is" and "Fortunate Son" which is mixed with Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". Wonderful.
Great sound, great performances, shame about the video.......2006-12-05
What a band and what stellar performances! My only complaint is that the video isn't anamorphic. On a wide screen set, you get black bars on all FOUR sides, and the image floats in the middle of the screen. What's really odd is that the documentary making-of IS anamorphic! Makes me wonder if someone at Sony didn't screw up.
Great Live Concert!.......2006-07-28
I was looking for a Bruce Hornsby dvd and after reading reviews on what was available I decided to take a chance on this one. Glad I did as this was a great show with a killer band! I've always liked Bruce and was hooked from the first album and bought the second cd when it came out. But for whatever reason I didn't keep up with him after that. This dvd exposed me to alot of great music that I've missed over the years and so I had to go purchase several cd's of Bruce Hornsby that I didn't have. The sound and picture are great on my surround sound system. If your a Bruce Hornsby fan you'll not be disappointed and if you aren't familiar with his music then it is a great place to start.
Astounding Music with Other-Worldly Virtuosity and Musicianship. Merely Average Video Quality........2006-07-09
First, in my 51 years on this planet, I've never heard anyone who encapsulates, integrates and unifies so many musical influences, with jaw-dropping virtuosity, improvisation and musicianship like Bruce Hornsby. If you listen 'inside' Bruce's music you can hear elements of Bluegrass, Folk, Country, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Cajun, Soul, Gospel, and probably a few other genres I can't think of right now.
In my humble opinion, Bruce Hornsby is the finest musician in America, and arguably on this planet, today.
This DVD captures performances that are timeless, memorable and mesmerizing. The documentary is fascinating and informative. I'll leave it to the other reviews to go into specifics songs critiques.
However, I'm disappointed by the video quality on this DVD. I was disappointed to find that the DVD is not anamorphic, only letterboxed, limiting the image potential.
On my HD home theater setup (720p Epson 550 projector / 106" Optoma screen / Oppo 720p HDMI DVD player), the image is slightly 'foggy'. The image lacks the clarity, impact, and 'punch' of most well-recorded concerts. The focus is soft as well. The color balance is towards the yellowish cast you get when you use outdoor film indoors with incandescent lighting. This may have been the directors attempt to give the image some 'warmth', but it looks unnatural. You never see color like this in person, at a real concert. Had this been shot many years ago, I could forgive the mediocre image. Sadly, I imagine the cameras used to record the concert are the culprit, and not the DVD mastering, so a future HD DVD is likely to be of little improvement.
Man, I HATE giving this only four stars!!!
I have to, though, to be objective and informative to those who consider all aspects of a DVD release.
Sound quality is five stars, music and performances are worth ten stars, but had the video clarity been that of an average modern concert DVD, I could give it the five stars the music deserves.

Playmakers grows on a viewer in the most important way a good television series should: by encouraging curiosity about the growth and fate of key characters. One might easily dismiss this ESPN original drama as a mere catalog of the problems that dog some professional football players, very often to public scrutiny: injuries, drugs, egos, criminal associations, etc. But patience rewards those who watch enough of Playmakers's 11 episodes to care about the humanity of the show's troubled athletes. The series concerns NFL contenders the Cougars, led by a hard but fair coach (Anthony John Denison) suffering from prostate cancer while dealing with a treacherous team owner (Bruce Gray), a problematic prima donna (Omar Gooding), and mid-ranked players struggling with fundamentals of the game.
Meanwhile, several Cougars emerge as major characters, among them middle linebacker Eric Olczyk (Jason Matthew Smith), a good guy psychologically impaired after paralyzing an opposing player and now trying to get both his game and life back. Olczyk's best friend, running back Leon Taylor (Russell Hornsby), is at the end of his contract and faces stiff competition for his job, causing stress that translates into a reputation-destroying act of domestic violence. Star quarterback Derek McConnell, a hound among hounds, impregnates a stranger and compels a team assistant (Stephen Bogaert) to handle abortion details. Time after time, the men of Playmakers find themselves pressured to live and function with an eye toward the team's good image and commercial prospects. Yet clean living is terribly difficult given the physical sacrifices, emotional isolation, management sabotage, and temptations foisted upon pro players. The many dramatic strings drawn out over the series come together in the very fine final episode, ending on a note of irony as outrageous as anything previously seen on television. --Tom Keogh

I still watch it to this day.......2007-03-29
I do agree with most of the reviewers. This should have been put on HBO. The story was just a smidgen too short. They really should of considered a second season. Omar Gooding as an overhyped rookie turned junkie is SWEET!!!
GREAT SERIES, TOO BAD IT'S NOT STILL AROUND.......2007-02-01
I think a non-NFL affiliated channel could really do well with this series, it's really great. I could see non-NFL fans tuning in to this series based on it's dramatic strengths alone, maybe A&E or Bravo, it would be a hit series.
I've not followed the NFL seriously since I was a kid/teenager but this made me want to get back into it and I could see my mother watching this too, not just NFL crazed dad!
It presents the time in-between Sundays and also does a marvelous job of gametime drama as well. These players live at the top their whole lives, women, money, influence, but it comes at a cost, physically, mentally and emotionally, this series chronicles just that.
The Power Of The NFL & The Weakness Of ESPN.......2007-01-09
I will admit that I was very sceptical about Playmakers when ESPN made the initial announcement about the series. And while the show - in my opinion - took several weeks to really find some momentum, it turned out to be a very good dramatic series that addressed some serious societal & racial issues within the fictional pro football team, the Cougars, who played in The League.
Topics such as spousal abuse, homosexuality, recreational drug usage and steroids made for compelling storylines. Though critics took aim at the scripts for oftentimes being over the top, the cast - that included Omar Gooding, Jason Matthew Smith and Marcello Thedford - made it work. The actors believed in the series, which made for some harsh words directed at ESPN when it cancelled the show after one season.
The 11 episodes orignally ran from August 26 to November 11, 2003, with numerous replays. As the real storyline goes - proving again the fact is stranger than fiction - NFL executives weren't pleased with the series and basically told the ESPN brass that the fictional show goes off the air or the real football games will leave the network.
When the series was cancelled, there were rumors that Playmakers would find another network to call home. That never got past the "rumor" stage.
The storylines clearly demonstrate that Playmakers was building a strong foundation for a second season. But - in perhaps the best lesson of all - it showed how a multi-billion-dollar, multi-national corporation will become a program director to a compliant network and dictate what shows will air for any given season.
EXCELLENT show!!!.......2006-12-15
I looked forward to watching this show every week. It doesn't have a light, fluffy story line and that's what made it so good. I love football but to see issues that happen to players behind the scenes was awesome! There's nothing in this show that most folks haven't heard or read about a player. I'm just disappointed that the show ended only after 11 episodes.
a phenominal short lived series courtesy of ESPN.......2006-12-08
Playmakers is simply incredible and I found even non-footballers can watch this story and wonder why the hell ESPN let this one slide. The story follows a struggling football team and the players and coaches on it. Its simply incredible to see how well written this football drama is and you see briefly the behind the scenes action of the NFL and the things that they didn't want the fans to see. It's a huge disappointment that the NFL wouldn't allow this show to continue as it showed pound for pound how this organization works and gave viewers and inside look inside the mind of the everyday athlete like nothing has before. If you have a chance, see this show, because great programming like this come few and far in between.

Bruce Hornsby's versatility, piano chops, voice, songs, and taste in musical companions are the highlights of Bruce Hornsby & Friends, an outstanding concert performance recorded in New York in 1995. Originally inspired by Elton John and Leon Russell, Hornsby later added jazz to his cupboard of influences; as a result, there is no better pianist in popular music, and his playing throughout the 56-minute show is superb. His band is pretty hot, too (as is the remarkably crisp Dolby Digital audio), but it's the guest appearances that lift this effort to another level entirely. True, Gregory Hines was a slightly odd choice; Hines' tap dancing on "Talk of the Town" is nice, but nothing special. But Pat Metheny burns on "White Wheeled Limousine," which finds the guitarist, Hornsby, and the band both swinging ferociously and rocking hard; Bob Weir joins Hornsby (a frequent Grateful Dead collaborator both before and after Jerry Garcia's death) for "Jack Straw," arguably Weir's best song; Don Henley does a nice job on "The End of the Innocence," co-written with Hornsby; and Bonnie Raitt is her usual bluesy, soulful self on "The Valley Road." With its intricate ensemble passages, catchy vocal choruses, and appealing lyrical slices of Americana, Hornsby's music is strong stuff. And notwithstanding the absence of DVD bonus features, it's hard to imagine a better showcase for it than this one. --Sam Graham

Enjoyable.... Solid but some reservation although not musical ones........2007-03-27
I'm a big fan of Bruce Hornsby and I enjoyed this performance which is all too brief. The guest stars are welcome. Glad to see Pat Metheny and Don Henley among them. The pieces are all well performed and in many cases differently than in the recorded versions.
My problem is one that afflicts too many concerts, that cutting away to a quote during a performance. It ruins the continuity of the piece for me. Given the technology available this intrusion should be an optional estra feature, like the directors narration during a movie.
Signature Performance.......2006-11-08
If you like Bruce Hornsby, then you'll like this DVD very much. If you don't like Bruce Hornsby, you'll probably appreciate him after seeing this DVD.
One of the Best Hornsby DVDs.......2006-01-11
This DVD featured some very talented people playing along side Bruce. That talent includes Don Henley on "End of the Innoncence", Bonnie Raitt on "Rainbows Cadillac, Bob Weir playing guitar and lead vocals on his own Grateful Dead hit "Jack Straw", Gregory Hines (actually tap dancing on Long Tall Cool One),and Pat Matheny playing guitar on "White-Wheeled Limousine." Overall, the concert was excellent, the only problem was that only part of the concert is actually on the DVD, they should have released the entire concert.
All around a Perfect Little Concert........2005-02-06
I bought this DVD because I have been a fan of Don Henley's for quite sometime now, when I found out that he was a guest in this concert, I had to get it, his performance of "The End of the Innocence" was really good and it was nice to see both Henley and Bruce Hornsby (who co-wrote the song with Henley) to actually perform this song live together on stage. Overall, the entire concert (which is just under an hour) was a great little performance, my only problem with this concert was just that, it was a little too short. Both the sound and visuals are very pleasing on this DVD and you will be entertained by Bruce Hornsby and Friends, with additional guest performances from Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, Pat Metheny and Gregory Hines.
A must watch DVD.... Bruce Hornsby & Friends..........2005-01-19
This is a must watch DVD in my book. This is Bruce at his best, live. I have watched this DVD at least 3 or 4 times since I bought it. I can never sick of watching it. The songs are wonderful and so is his playing. So buy this CD and have hours of enjoyment. Thanks.

((( THIS IS CHURCH!! ))).......2004-03-07
This is the one of the best musical performances that I have seen or heard recorded!!!..This is in the same league with the Last Waltz. Do not be mislead by other reviews that devalue this performance, it is one of the best that is available via DVD. This is what CHURCH should be...it will give you RELIGION!!!
You will play this all the time.........2004-03-07
For years I had a bootleg cassette of this show...I loved it and converted it to CD....when it came out on DVD I had to watch it and get a good sounding copy...the DVD did not disappoint....Jerry is on 2 songs and he looks and sounds great...I would say his appearance is worth the price of the dvd, except that every song is great.....its not a wild dancing in the isle dvd...the audience is quiet between sonds...it just has the quality in sound and picture that is viewable time after time...
too much jammin' ? no way.......2004-02-09
I read the review by the guy who said there was too much jammin' by the guests, especialy Jerry ! This convinced me to buy this DVD. It's great, and he's right, all the guests jam based on Bruce's intensity on the keyboard. Why would you want a concert to sound like a studio disc ? They make Classic hits formats for people that want that sound.
It should be a lot better than this.......2004-02-03
I've waited alongtime for Bruce Hornsby to come out on DVD. I was disappointed. Its too much like watching a VHS tape. After watching the Eagles Hell Freezes Over DVD and a few others, you expect the sound and video on new DVD's to be up to current standards. This was not. I don't understand why they wouldn't do a new concert using today's video and audio capabilities. I would hope if Bruce does another DVD, that it also include some of his other songs that were not on this DVD. Looks like I'll have to keep waiting.
Only if you're a DIE HARD Bruce fan........2004-01-28
All in all, pretty disappointing!
Believe me, I really dig Bruce's music and own five of his albums (which I really love!) ...but...
Track listing gives 11 songs, but last one (These arms of mine) is actually an edit played over the titles!
The audio, while pretty good, is in some places a bit muddled with all the "jamming" going on, too many 'special guests' which only add to the confusion - take Jerry Garcia for example - he plays and plays and just ruins the ambience of the tune...go away Jerry!
Real gems in this performance are 'Across the river', 'Lost Soul' and 'The way it is'.
Any fans of "Valley Road" will have to make do with the Nitty Gritty fast version.
Few classic Hornsby tunes here, not enough to enjoy and bad editing all add to the let-down. Like to see Bruce play with just the band and concentrate the show on pure melody and song perfection with all the hits.
Too few songs and a poor stage set. Sorry folks, but still waiting for a decent, all inclusive and longer DVD!

Bruce Hornsby & the Range- Rockpalast Live.......2006-01-15
Excellent Bruce Hornsby as always at the top of his craft
Bruce's account of this show..........2003-03-27
I was lucky to chat with Bruce about this show. It was filmed for German TV, and he said that the band before his (I don't recall who) just put the crowd into a bored stupor. You can even see it in their faces as the shows starts.
By the time Bruce and co took to the stage, this crowd had already been on their feet for hours, and so he saw it as something of a challenge to get them going again. They deliberately started with an up tempo Night on the Town, and pretty much maintained that pace throughout.
The picture quality (it's very dark in there) and some surreal camera angles take away from the DVD slightly, but you wouldn't expect that to detract from the music. It doesn't.
Now can we have something more recent?!?
Average sound and vision, peerless performer........2001-09-27
There is no question that the sound and vision on this DVD release is below average. "Two Against Nature" it ain't. However, if, like me, you regard Bruce Hornsby as one of the finest composers and performers in any idiom of the past 25 years, you will enjoy this DVD for what it is: a record of a great band at the peak of its powers. The concert was recorded in Koln, Germany sometime after the release of "A Night on the Town". The majority of the songs are taken from that recording. Koln, of course, was the setting for a famous Keith Jarrett release on ECM. Horsnby dedicates "Another Day" to Leon Russell. And that about sums things up: a cross between "Leon Live" and "The Sun Bear Concerts", with a dash of bluegrass and country for good measure. Forget the audio quality (which is tolerable rather than execrable) and enjoy 90 minutes of superb music, beautifully crafted and flawlessly played.
horrible quality.......2001-09-03
I can't believe they released this on DVD. I bought it at a local store, and luckily was able to return it.
The only person who would really like this is a HardCore Hornsby fan who is obsessed and needs to own everything he/she can that is Hornsby related.
Mainly, it's the sound quality. There are times where it actually fades out, like you're listening to an old beat up cassette that is on it's last legs.
The picture quality isn't any better. It was very poorly filmed and recorded.
Musically, it is a decent performance for the most part, although early in the group's history. I've heard them play much better. Maybe I was just too distracted by the quality to really enjoy it.
I'm sorry.
What ever happened to Bruce Hornsby?.......2001-07-31
After reviewing this DVD, I asked myself, what happened to Bruce Hornsby? The music here sounds as good now as they did a decade ago. The music is great, but the picture quality is merely a good VHS type quality while the sound is simply good, but not reference quality. However, don't let me deter you from purchasing this DVD. It is essential listening because after the first song, Bruce is on a roll playing his most popular compositions back to back. Its only missing the deeper most bass quality of the more recent concert DVDs. Hornsby is a great artist and it shows here. The guitarist is quite good, however, he, Bruce and the other musicians need to be more loose in their performing. They play, along with the back ground vocalists, rather stiff. This is great music though, and I like it better than Don Henley and the Eagles. Now if only one can convince Bruce Hornsby to make more music. He is certainly one of the great artist of our time, and we need to hear more from him. I've been playing this DVD repeatedly. Thats just how good the music is on this disc. Amazon indicated I would give this disc a 5 star rating. How right they are. If you like the Eagles or Don Henly, you'll love this concert. Bruce even got an encore, and a well deserved one.

Two Rooms Portuguese edition!.......2003-06-11
When I received this DVD in the mail, I found strange packaging. Turns out that this is a Portuguese version. So the packaging and the DVD menus are in Portuguese. HOWEVER, the content of the DVD is in English and matches the original video release from a few years ago. Yes, this will play on American DVD machines.
The 4 stars is because of the Portuguese (I had to think a bit to translate "legendas sim" to "subtitles yes").
The quality is not DVD-caliber quality either, but that's because this is niche material. However, it is comparable to a good video.
Elton, as ever, rocks. :)
