Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera mused in a 2003 interview about being "considered old dogs that were about to be shot and put out of their misery" before the band embarked on this 2001 tour, their first in some 18 years. He needn't have worried. Manzanera and fellow original members Bryan Ferry and Andy Mackay, joined by an array of excellent musicians, singers, and even dancers, are in fine fettle for this 110-minute London concert (a documentary is also included). It certainly helps to have a clutch of stylish, appealing songs available, ranging from early hits like "Virginia Plain" and "Do the Strand" to later fare like the seductive "Avalon" and "Dance Away." OK, so the urbane, ever-dapper Ferry may not be the world's greatest singer, and these tunes are hardly world-changers... but with Roxy Music it's all about the vibe, and these folks have it in spades. Cheers, fellows. --Sam Graham

MARVELOUS! Absolutely MARVELOUS!.......2007-03-09
"Roxy at the Apollo" makes me remember how stunned the band made me WAY back in 1974, right after "Country Life" was released. These guys acknowledged what the "Lester Bangs character" in "Almost Famous" said about rock and roll being dead. So Roxy, in effect, re-invented it! And I do have to say that I am EVER so grateful that Eno didn't deign to tour with the band in '01 - his "balding transvestite" appearance kind of scared me off the band's first 2 albums (althugh the music was fantastic!) NO problem - here, he's replaced by 2 stone-GORGEOUS Ladies, Lucy Wilkins and Julia Thornton, who handle keyboards/violin (no, Eddie Jobson's not along, either) and percussion. There's a guy, Colin Good, along on the ride too, and he plays "just" piano, thus freeing Bryan Ferry to run about the stage and...well, he ain't the greatest "front man," but let's not quibble. I said "just," when I mentioned Colin Good, because, I swear, it is sort of trite to say "he lives up to his name." Honestly, he sounds like he's "channelling" Chopin or Debussy! The original three other (MOST indispensible!) Roxy musicians are here too, Sax player, Andy Mackay, guitarist Phil Manzanera, and even drummer-extraordinare, Paul Thompson, augmented by noted session guitarist, Chris Spedding. The sound is absolutely LUSH, even though Ferry's not the vocalist he was.."last millineum," but the two Lady singers MORE than adequately hide any shortcomings. If you are a Roxy Music fan (a RABID fan, such as I) just ignore the other two Roxy DVD's, and right now, purchase this DVD. It truly is something to sit down with your kids and enjoy, showing them Rock and Roll's last gasp. (well...till the Ramones debuted in 1975, but this is a Roxy review...)
Fantastic Concert.......2007-02-18
Very nice concert video. Good sound-quality, colorful and nice video-pictures. One of my favourite music DVD's.
One to own.......2007-02-15
Phenomenal performance! Roxy Music has always been a favorite of mine, but I had never seen them live or on DVD. This DVD has some incredible energy, great sound and video. The songs to me sound as good as or, in some cases, better than the original studio recordings. Case in point is my favorite "Mother of Pearl". I love the video editing of this song to include a very sexy black and white montage of dancers. The song picked up needed speed over the original. Everyone looks like they're having a great time on all of the tracks. I can't recommend this one enough.
Nicely done.......2006-04-26
Not many bands can provide a consistent output of great music for decades, but Roxy has. They have plenty of classic records and many of these catchy pop tunes with tasteful arrangements are captured on this live performance.
The concert is approximately 105 minutes long, has a good selection of tunes (most tempos are faster than the studio versions), good video, and three audio choices (DTS, DD 5.0, and stereo)... all sound great. In addition, this disc has the option to display the lyrics as subtitles, which is a feature that should be standard for all concert DVD's. Bonus feature includes a 17-minute documentary.
take a bow.......2006-03-25
This band wrote the book on style and originality, and they gave it to us mixing musical mayhem with finesse and soul. And never once took themselves too seriously doing it.
And now, 30 years later, out of the blue these geezers pop up on a stage and put on a show that puts any contemporary pretender to shame.
30 years later and they are still ahead of their time.

There will be a Light.......2007-03-04
Once in a while there comes along an artist that just doesn't disappoint. Ben Harper is that type of artist. You can tell that by this project with the Blind Boys of Alabama. If you love LIVE gospel music you should definitely check out this DVD. The set is basic and the performances raw and unabashed. The concert alone is worth the price of this disc but to see the behind the scenes footage is priceless. I think the biggest compliment I can pay to this DVD is I play it on Sundays around the house to feel close to the Lord who is truly the light. Hopefully you will discover it and feel the same way too.
Compelling.......2005-12-04
Alright so I am a new comer to the hi fi world with B&W 700 Series all over and rotel components and after watching my first DVD concert (that being Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama) I am compelled to write my first ever review. This was given to me as a gift from the sales person where I had bought my equipment and I can say that he knows what he's doing. Anyway! I have never heard of Ben Harper until after watching this DVD. My eyes and ears are asking me what took so long. This DVD has one of the best 5.1 sounds that I have ever heard with the odd person yowling in the background and the punch of the bass from the stage I trully felt that I was right there. I don't listen to gospel but this is an exception in many ways. Track 11 is so amazing I can't help but to believe. If you enjoy soul with great sound and picture this is a must have!
THERE IS NOT WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS DVD ,BUT I TRY........2005-04-03

Hall & Oates Revival!.......2006-06-24
I recently purchased the Hall & Oates live in concert 2003 (request show edited) and enjoyed it so much I looked for another.
Based on Amazon reviews I bought this DVD Rock'n Soul.
I appear to have a different version but same 16 tracks but with no bonus section. Its live at the Apollo, New York 1983 not 1984, and is produced in DTS and 5.1 surround. Initially I was a little dissappointed with quality of sound and picture, but I was comparing it to todays recordings which is a little unfair when comparing to a 1983 production. The song versions are outstanding and the show entertainment plus. GE Smith is in top form on his guitar as are Daryl and John in their prime. I watched it 3 times continuously when it arrived and it has really grown on me so much I am in a Hall & Oates revival mode.
Best track is One on One, best version I have ever heard and its not a normal favourite. Wait for me, She's gone, Sara smile brilliant. Kiss on my list, Private eyes, I can't go for that, Maneater, You've lost that loving feeling all goodies too.
Also really enjoyed lesser known Art of Heartbreak and Open all night. What a shame Your Imagination was not included!
If you are a Hall & Oates fan, you need this DVD. But if you are after a precise DVD with crystal clarity buy the 2003 live concert one.

This is a great DVD, with two fantastic concerts from the mid 80's when H&O were at the pinnacle of their concert shows. The Rock & Soul concert is great, with songs from H20, and previous albums hits. High energy Concert, great music & vocals.
THe Apollo concert is a true once in a lifetime performance with the H & O band, plus the two Temptations, Eddie Kendrick, and David Ruffin. This is full of fantastic, sentimental music, that will never again be repeated.

Bry Fans .......2007-05-11
For ALL Roxy fans, this wonderful concert in London shows the great band
together again......a must for Ferry folks. Well filmed and good sound
quality. Check out the interviews B4 the show.To my knowledge, the latest
recorded DVD Roxy Music has offered (correct me by E-mail please).
Incredible.......2005-04-03
To the people who pu this disc down, open your minds, sit back, turn it loud, and be prepared to get blown away. To a younger generation brought up on Brittney, Usher American Idol, Outkast, and other flavors of the minute, I hope these people can do 1/10th of what Roxy Music did this night after doing this for thirty some years.
The energy is extraordinary, would have liked a couple of more songs, but this has it all. If Jealous guy doesn,t bring tears to your eyes, and Do the Strand doesn't have you doing the Strand, then you are dead.
If I could give this 10 stars I would. These are masters on top of their craft, consummate professionals, and they enjoyed every minute.
If you haven't bought this, buy it, If you have it show it to everyone you know, it will be worth it.
The only live discs that I have that even come close to this are Manfred Mann Angel Station Live, and Jean Michel Jarre live in Moscow.
these are very good, but for energy in a performance this is the best.
Let's see what the next 30 years brings.
Enjoy
Bob
Roxy shines.......2003-09-11
a stunning, magical performance that captures all the glory of
these accomplished musicians.
The uniqueness of Roxy is yours for the tasting and like certain distinct vintages, got much better with time.
Love is the drug.
A "must-have" DVD for Roxy/Brian Ferry fans.......2003-09-01
I pretty much agree with the other reviews I've read here. This is a great concert DVD that's spoiled only by the choppy editing. When you watch a concert in real life, you don't spend 2 seconds looking at the drummer, then 1.5 seconds looking at the lead singer then 3 seconds looking at the bass guitarist's left hand, etc... I don't know why so many editors of concert films think they have to continuously keep changing the camera angle every few seconds in order to hold your interest. I would much rather watch an entire Phil Manzanera guitar solo from one camera shot, showing only him, thank you. The Brian Ferry Live in Paris DVD did a much better job in this regard. Other than that, it's a great DVD. Good sound and some great performances by Ferry, Manzanera et al. There are even a couple of unexpected, more obscure Roxy tunes included, such as "Mother of Pearl". The bonus tracks include a brief documentary with the band and an option to watch the concert with the song lyrics appearing in subtitles! I've never seen that on any concert video before. I only wish I knew more people who were Roxy fans so I could invite them over to watch this! Some bands are better off never re-uniting, but that can't be said about Roxy- they sound as good or better than ever.
Roxy Never Left The Building.......2003-07-06
I put the DVD into the player with some trepidation. Loved Roxy at their peak in the Seventies and Eighties, but hadn't heard from / of them for the best part of 15 years. I needn't have worried one bit. The Man and the Band are in fine form, both visually and sonically, and perform truly first rate renditions of their best album and single tracks in this 2001 concert recording.
If you weren't a big Roxy fan, there will be a few unfamiliar tunes during the first half of the disc, but keep watching as the second half is basically a back-to-back Greatest Hits sequence and is a real treat for everybody. And talk about hits, what truly great hits they were indeed. Innovative, catchy and supremely well-crafted, they have stood the test of time very well, which is more than can be said about the music from most other "visual" bands of the era. From the lilting Avalon, through the addictive Love Is The Drug and the slightly manic Street Life, this is British pop/rock of the highest caliber. The lucky London Apollo audience certainly had a good time, and so did I! Why I even caught a glimpse of Mr. Ferry smiling a couple of times!
Video production and audio quality are also excellent, though to split hairs, I would have liked more than one "overhead flying camera" route, and from memory, the lead vocals were a little more upfront in the original renditions. This can be easily rectified by increasing center channel volume in a surround sound setup. Pan-and-Scan viewers will experience exceptional camera framing, while Wide-screen viewers will feel more immersed in the entire concert atmosphere. As a personal observation, I found the drum sound a little "soft" (intentionally perhaps, for that Seventies sound?), with less transients than other recent recordings. Conversely, I found the stage a little clinical (what, no dry ice?!?) and anyone hoping to see the "trademark" seductive Roxy ladies of yore will have to make do with more contemporary versions (not a bad thing, really). Other than providing lyrics, the only other extra on the DVD is a tastefully executed short documentary, informally hosted by band member Phil Manzanera, of the band preparing for and beginning the tour series.
So here we have it Ladies and Gentlemen. A truly fine DVD memento from a band whose music and legacy will live on and on, For Your Pleasure!
