The 1987 debut season of the wildly popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first animated TV series finally arrives in its entirety on this single disc. And while it's a pleasure to have these long-unavailable episodes in DVD format, the set's lackluster presentation and paltry extras also make it a disappointment for those hoping for a more expansive release. Volume One contains the five-episode "miniseries" that comprised the debut season and explained the Turtles' origins; the episodes are presented with opening and closing credits, though offered as single chapters on the disc. The "bonus" material is four episodes from the series' tenth and final season, which were largely unseen in the U.S. (though some U.K. viewers may have caught them). While interesting from a completist perspective, their inclusion clashes somewhat with the first-season episodes, as the series' look and tone had changed considerably by this point. And when combined with the disc's overall lack of quality picture and sound (video masters appear to have been used), Volume One represents something of a missed opportunity for TMNT fans; however, having the first season on a single disc may be an acceptable trade. --Paul Gaita

Nostalgia kick.......2007-05-15
I was surprised and pleased to find this on amazon, as I haven't seen the series since I was little. I used to watch it every afternoon after school. Brought back some memories.
Ahh, childhood.......2007-05-12
I'm glad I was able to find this. I enjoyed every episode and look forward to getting more. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.
An absolute classic cartoon revived on DVD!.......2007-04-15
I grew up watching TMNT, and was delighted when the DVD release of the original series was announced.
This release features the entire first season from 1987. This can be a little misleading, as the first season only consisted of 5 episodes: "Turtle Tracks", "Enter the Shredder", "A Thing About Rats", "Hot-Rodding Teenagers From Dimension X" and "Shredder and Splintered". Over the course of these episodes, we see many Turtles favourites introduced; Shredder, Krang, April O'Neil, Bebop and Rocksteady, even minor characters like General Tragg that were known best for their action figure counterparts!
To compensate for the short first season, a bonus four episodes from 1996's Season 10 (which never made it to British TV screens) are included: "The Beginning of the End", "The Return of Dregg", "Monster From Dimension X" and "The Day the Earth Disappeared". While these episodes are quite interesting to watch from the perspective as someone who only saw the first couple of seasons of the show as a child, they don't have the same magic that the old episodes had; the animation looks a lot cheaper, like many modern cartoons, and much of the humour from earlier episodes is absent.
Unfortunately, there are no documentaries about the cultural impact the show had or anything along those lines, which would have been very interesting. The only bonus features are the extra episodes.
I personally hadn't seen the first couple of episodes until buying this set, since the craze reached my school a few episodes in. An interesting note about the first season is that the episodes follow a linear storyline, and the episodes are sequential (some taking place directly after the events at the end of the previous episode).
The DVD picture quality is good. The quality is crisp, considering it is a cartoon from 1987. Some imperfections can be seen fairly frequently, though this is probably due to the age of the cartoons and the quality of the original broadcasts and not due to poor production values, as the 1996 episodes are much crisper quality. Sound has the slight imperfections that you'd expect from a cartoon from the 80s, and is completely listenable.
Menus are excellent, featuring great airbrushed art very typical of original Turtles merchandise and artwork from the late 80s and early 90s.
The DVD comes in a case within a foil-enhanced cardboard sleeve featuring some great artwork of the Turtles emerging from the sewer in the airbrushed glory of 1980s, cartoon New York. This is the most attractive of any of the DVD releases so far. Artwork quality on subsequent releases decreased significantly.
A fantastic trip down memory lane, and well worth the price!
TMNT Rules!.......2007-04-06
I love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and grew up watching them every Saturday morning. I think they are the reason for my fascination with ninjas. Anyways these episdoes are classic and I somehow remember them from almost 20 years ago. If you are a big fan like me this is definitely worth adding to your DVD collection.
A Must-Have for Fans, But Remains Light on Content.......2007-03-31
The season that started the phenomenon. Going back to see the original five episodes of season one of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brings back memories of my childhood. For the Turtles collector, this is the quintessential DVD that begins the whole series and, for that reason, makes Volume 1 a must-have. Unfortunately, while the original five episodes from season one are all included in their classic glory, they are about all this very simple DVD has to offer.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Original Series Volume 1 begins with the premiere episode "Turtle Tracks," and introduces us to April O' Neal, The Shredder, and more importantly, the Turtles themselves. The following four episodes all center around the introduction of the Turtles and Shredder's incessant plots to make them all into turtle soup, all culminating in the season finale, "Shredded and Splintered." Fans will appreciate the preservation of all five episodes, and seeing as how these are probably some of the most important episodes to the series, fans will surely want to pick this up.
Unfortunately, five episodes are all you're really getting here. There are an additional four episodes from season ten that never aired, but their inclusion is strange. I personally never saw the later seasons of the show, and the bonus episodes all focus on Lord Dregg whom I had never seen up until now. There's no real explanation for some things, and for the most part, the bonus episodes remain uninteresting compared to the main attraction of this DVD. What would have made more sense would have been to start with the first couple episodes of season two. Still, even with the lack of substance and the very plain DVD presentation, Volume 1 will find its way to the Turtle fan's shelves because of the original five episodes.

Ninja Turtles.......2007-06-09
My 3 1/2 year old son LOVES this DVD and it has almost 3 hours of episodes so he never gets bored whenever he gets the chance to watch (which we try not to make too often.) DVD arrived in great shape.
great to have,but the qual?.......2007-05-17
awesome that these are available, but the transfers are iffy.choppy n stuff, but at least the fans can see things they haven't tripped out on for years!
Just as good as it was 20 years ago!.......2007-02-11
This DVD contains all 13 episodes from the second season of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series from the 80s. And if you grew up on these shows, like I did, then you will be pleasantly surprised to see them here "again for the first time."
Obviously the cartoon is geared towards kids, that's why we watched it two decades ago when we were kids. For the reviewers complaining about the poor drawings and lack of action, what did you expect? Were you a brilliant cartoon critic when you were [...]? No, but I bet you appreciated the ninja turtles for what they are.
For a little under $9.00 on Amazon, you can get all 13 episodes from the second season. I can't think of a better deal than that. Unlike other shows from the 80s that have lost most of their appeal today, the stories are still interesting and the jokes, while lame, are lame enough to still be funny. The opening sequence with the theme song is just as exciting today as it was when the episodes were originally aired.
These episodes contain some great stuff. Shredder comes back from Dimension X to destroy the turtles by Krang's demands. Baxter Stockman is freed from prison, and eventually becomes the mutant fly we know him as. Bebop and Rocksteady show up again. April O'Neill gets mutated into a catwoman, Splinter gets a brief stint as a human again, Napoleon Bonafrog (and three other mutated frogs are created), the Neutrinos appear for an episode, and Shredder launches all kinds of bumbled attempts to attack the turtles, before Krang ultimately comes back from Dimension X in the Technodrome.
Children of the 80s, don't miss this DVD!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.......2007-01-09
This is the old series which aired on TV in the eighties. My 22 year old daughter thinks it's great that her seven year old brother is now watching one of her favorite cartoons when she was little! Although he says the turtles in this series "look like babies", because he is accustomed to the sleeker, more modern look of the turtles in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-Fast Forward, which is what is airing on TV now, he nevertheless enjoys the old series and owns volumes 1-4. I consider them money well spent!
I would have given this 5 stars, but the dialogue from the old series is really silly and not as well-written as the more recent 2 series and the movies which were geared to entertain adults as well as little kids.
Lifeless .......2006-11-17
Couldn't agree with the previous reviewer more.
I was one who grew up on The Ninja Turtles, being a child of the 80's, and even to this day, I have very distinct, lucid memories of some of the shows moments... After watching most of this DVD, though, I've come to the realiziation that (as far as I can deduce) most of the stunning moments of animation artistry that lie dormant in my memory are those found namely in the show's first season. What I recall of them is that they were bold, climactic, serious, and slick. Dramatic, even. PERHAPS my mind is deluding me, but I know this -- they were in no way fathomable as putrid or inane as the episodes here.
Just nothing of appeal here. Everything is so, ahem, goofy. Like, fruity (using that with no homosexual connotations...) Everything just feels off, and for the very worst. The plots are non-existent or just downright idiotic, and I have no intention of placing some sort of demand on quality plots here... There's just no scope to any of them, so who cares? Again, everything just feels... commercialized? I don't want to say that, though, because it seems like a much worse transition than to being merely for popular consumption; it feels for some reason what I figured the show would feel like by season 5 or so, after it had hit its peak and been taken over by a different crew and being set up for a changing demographic. The pitches of the voices seem higher. The turtles' faces seem extra round and... like... cheery-bright-prozac-happy faces. The only thing that retains some likeliness is the music, with the synthesized droning I came to love and associate with the show over time.
Hmmm.....it's like... You ever see Don Bluth's "The Land Before Time" or "An American Tail"? Then proceeded to see one of the horrendous sequels? I think this can apply for a lot of animated feats, actually. This is just what I feel like... Almost EVERY lick of substance that at one point existed in the show is null, void with season 2.
But I'm somewhat perplexed because it's season 2... The show just started. I had no intentions of watching this one before checking out Volume 1, but through a mishap I ended up receiving it instead, so I'll be sure to check out 1 soon... Hopefully my nostalgia is not completely warping me and there are in fact goodies to be found within other episodes in this series... Because while this DVD is harmless, I can't imagine anyone but the youngest children will find it bearable.

Some days it DOES pay to come out of your shell!.......2007-02-19
For a little under $9.00 on Amazon, you can get 12 episodes from the third season. I can't think of a better deal than that. Unlike other shows from the 80s that have lost most of their appeal today, the stories are still interesting and the jokes, while lame, are lame enough to still be funny. The opening sequence with the theme song is just as exciting today as it was when the episodes were originally aired.
Volume 3 contains episodes with Irma becoming a giant, Splinter and Shredder switching bodies, Donatello mimicking Humphrey Bogart for an entire episode, Shredder reversing the effects of gravity, April being mistaken for a princess, and a young kid becoming the "fifth turtle". Although the plot setups aren't quite as good as in seasons one and two, they still play nicely to those of us who grew up watching them.
Like the other TMNT Season collections, this DVD has no extras, but really 12 episodes is enough of a treat in itself.

Great DVD.......2006-12-30
I really can't remember the episodes as a child, but I do remember that I would sit down to watch the Ninja Turtles; they were my favorite back then and still are now as a teenager. Out of the first three volumes, volume three is my favorite; I find the episodes a bit more entertaining for some reason I can't explain. I enjoyed all twelve episodes, particularly "The Fifth Turtle". I recommend this DVD for anyone who wants to sit down, relax, and enjoy a nice set of cartoons.
The originals on DVD!!!.......2006-10-23
I loved this cartoon so much as a kid and now I get to enjoy these DVDs. I know, we're all a little disappointed that the whole seasons arent being released. I guess there are no plans since they keep putting out the "best of" volumes. STILL...it's awesome to have such an amazing series being released, however the format. I'll take as many best ofs they can throw at me! We can't control these companies, so we can make the best of it. 12 is a nice number, and these 12 from season 3 are some of the best of the whole series. Standouts include "The Old Switcheroo", when Shredder and Splinter swap places, "Enter the Rat King", where Splinter is put under this new villain's control, and "April Fool", where April is mistaken for a princess and kidnapped by Shredder who plans to use her for ransom to get a rare diamond. Part of the show's enormous success was due to the extremely likable characters. The turtles, of course all have distinct personalities. Their master,Splinter may not share in their love of pizza but he can whoop up on the foot clan and whip his students into shape, both physically and mentally. Their best friend April O' Neil is one of the best loved tough heroines since She Ra. Even her fellow reporters at Channel 6 are just as important to the series, usually adding comic relief. Check the Rat King episode where lonely desperate for a man Irma insists the Rat King capture her instead of April! Even a maniac will reject Irma, and you can't help but love her. Where is the Irma action figure by the way? As for the villians, the standards are Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, along with an army of foot and rock soldiers. The writing is razor sharp and very clever and the bad guys's constant bickering will keep you in stiches, especially the exchanges between Shredder and the brain-inside an android Krang. In one episode, Krang mentions he doesn't leave the technodrome without his "alien express card"..LOL! Another cool thing I've always loved is the music! Aside from the theme song, there are nice bits of music that builds up the tension or excitement. The show had a knack for an eerie synth-dramatic sound. It's brilliant. Parents, if you're concerned about the violence, I wouldn't be. Like He Man and the Masters of the Universe, there are messages and lessons to be learned, although not made as blantantly as He Man did at the end of every episode. Aside from the 80's -surfer dude speech of Michaelangelo, the series is not dated at all and is fresh as a brand new pizza. Sink your teeth into these! Keep 'em coming!
12 episodes of one of the best TV shows ever.......2006-09-13
Sure it is one of the best cartoons ever, but it seriously is one of the best TV shows that have ever been made. All 12 episodes are great. The rat king was odd but still all of these are GREAT episodes. The volume 4 disc has some duds but the first 3 volumes ALL have great episodes. So you are probably thinking about picking this thing up, mondo notion dude.

Classic.......2007-05-13
If ever you were a fan of the Ninja Turtles, you MUST own the complete set of the original tv series. Once you watch these dvds, you'll regress back to childhood and want everything "Ninja Turtle". Great for new Ninja fans too!
Turtles 6.......2007-01-15
I loved it! if your a fan of the old cartoons or the movies, you will love this. its fun and entertaining
Good '80s action cartoon.......2007-01-01
The last volume of Lionsgate as they plan to release the rest of eps of TMNT in season sets instead of individual volumes. This one ends the Season 3 and the last ep Plan 6 from Outer Space have diff ending credits and it's marked copyright 1990.The eps mainly focuses on the rising of the Technodrome from the center of Earth to the surface and the conquering of the world by Krang which fails due the incompetence of Bebop and Rocksteady. In the last ep the Turtles won a trip to Europe grom a Pizza brand ad thing that we won't see until season 7.I'm waiting to see the 4th season sets.
TMNT are back.......2006-12-12
Finally, the last episodes of season 3. These episodes are just as good as the ones on volume 5, if not better. The last 3 episodes of season 3, "The Big" three-part story arch, has to be the best story of the entire run, giving an excellent conclusion to the best season of TMNT. Volume 6 also has the first episode of season 4 and that episode takes place right after The Big Blow out and sets the stage for the european vacation story arch. As great as the three-part-finale is, there are also other great episodes, the most notable episode is Shredderville, which is a rather darker than usual, alternetive reality-based episode. Very enjoyable and a fan favourite. Other great episodes are The Great Boldini, The Missing Map and The Turtle Terminator, which is a very silly but hilarious episode, sort of a guilty pleasure. Many recurring characters return, like The Rat King, Baxter Stockman and General Tragg. The Shredder and Krang are also as brilliant as ever. I recommend Vol. 6 for fans of TMNT or just any fan of good entertainment.
Season 3 finally finishes.......2006-12-11
It may not be the longest running cartoon or children's program, but you have to admit, the original Ninja Turtles show definitely is a rarity in the animation world: not only did it total an impressive 10 seasons, but a respectable 193 episodes as well. Vol. 6 finally wraps up the show's 3rd season (at this point, the series was still in syndication and not on Saturdays), with some fun episodes like Shredderville which features the Turtles stuck in a nightmarish alternate-reality where Shredder rules Manhattan, all mutants are outlawed, and an unstable Technodrome is stuck in the middle of town and threatening to explode at any second; Bye Bye Fly, which brings back Baxter Fly for yet another confrontation with the mutants; and the Turtle Terminator, in which the Turtles fight a killer robot duplicate of Irma(this episode also features Hal Rayle and Greg Berg performing the respective roles of Raphael and Donatello instead of the usual Rob Paulsen and Barry Gordon). Best of all, some of these episodes are actually new to me. There were a few episodes that I sadly missed when I watched it back in 1989, so I'm thankful for the DVD release so I can finally see these for the first time.
Season 3's finale marked another multi-part arc, this time a 3-parter that notably has the words "The Big" at the beginning of each title. As we remembered at the end of season 2 (aka vol. 2), Shredder and Krang's giant mechanical moving fortress, the Technodrome, escaped Dimension X, only to wind up being buried in the Earth's core and left low on power, thus keeping it from escaping its prison. The past season focused on the bad guys trying to find an energy source to restore it to its full strength. Now, the Technodrome has at last been restored to normal (thanks to Bebop and Rocksteady of all characters!), and the Turtles must now stop it with the fate of the entire planet hanging in the balance. Part 2: The Big Break-In is another episode I've never seen before, so I'm really happy to finally see all three parts in order. (I actually saw part 3 first, so I was shocked to see the Technodrome suddenly pop up out of nowhere).
The final episode, as well as the first episode of the show's 4th season, Plan 6 from Outer Space, notable for its title sendup of the infamous Ed Wood film Plan 9 from Outer Space, serves as not only an epilogue to the 3-parter but a lead in to the next arc as well. At the end of the episode Michelangelo winds up winning a vacation in Europe, which sends the Turtles vacationing throughout the country for the next 10 or so episodes. However, although these episodes were made, they didn't air until the show's 7th season. Whether these will wind up on vol 7 in production order or on a much future volume in airdate order we'll have to wait and see.
I'm happy that Lion's Gate is at least getting better at bringing the releases out (as opposed to where we had to wait a year for the second volume!), and unlike Disney's multiple Disney Afternoon-era DVD sets, the quality and menus are at least decent, although I still wish we had some sort of bonus material. Still, the low price range and the fact that it has 2-4 times the amount of episodes most single DVD sets have still make it a good pickup, especially if you've been a huge fan of this show like myself.

Season Five of TMNT on DVD.......2007-07-08
On October 5, 1991, the second season (and fifth overall) of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" debuted on the CBS network. Riding a wave of almost unparalleled popularity at that time, the series had truly become a pop-cultural phenomenon.
This DVD set contains, to my understanding, 18 episodes of the fifth season of this series. However, for reasons that I don't understand, two episodes from the end of that season, a two-parter that aired in primetime -- "Planet of the Turtleoids" -- has not been included in this set. I am assuming that these episodes will be released in a later set (presumably the sixth season), but to not include them here is a shame. Why Lion's Gate would skimp out on these two episodes remains to be seen.
However, that minor quibble aside, there are some other assorted goodies to feed the senses. Continuing in the tradition that was set with the previous release, there are three bonus features included in this set:
"Heroes in a Half Shell" featurette on the Ninja Turtles phenomenon
"Inside the Turtle Shell" character portrait of Donatello
"Inside the Turtle Shell" character portrait of the Evil Splinter
On a sidenote, it will be interesting to see if the voice actor behind Donatello makes any references to the other voice actor who sometimes portrayed Donatello in the third season. I, in particular, have always been intrigued by this; to my memory, only Donatello and Raphael of the Fearsome Foursome ever had different voice actors at certain times in the series. Donatello and Raphael had notable voice changes in some episodes of the third season (in "The Turtle Terminator," both their voices are different...in the SAME EPISODE!), and a brand new voice actor gave voice to Raphael in the show's final season. But I digress.
Any fan of this classic series (and I am one of the legions!) will pick up this release come August 7, along with a side-order of peanut-butter and pickled-beets pizza, a dish Michaelangelo would have loved. There is much to savor in this three-disk set, "Planet of the Turtleoids" not withstanding.
By the way, I love the box-cover art and packaging for this release. Very clever!

Classic.......2007-05-13
If ever you were a fan of the Ninja Turtles, you MUST own the complete set of the original tv series. Once you watch these dvds, you'll regress back to childhood and want everything "Ninja Turtle". Great for new Ninja fans too!
Despite a few new cartoon voices, this volume is still tubular.......2007-02-21
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 4 has some great stuff on it. Baxter Stockman comes back (along with the Rat King), Casey Jones is introduced (sounding like a breathy Clint Eastwood), Shredder thinks that he's Michelangelo when a duplicating experiment goes wrong, an alien tourist almost almost sucks up all of New York with his camera, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo are given a love potion and fall in love with Irma, while Rocksteady falls in love with April, and Shredder and Krang flood the city and send a giant squid after the turtles.
Every episode on this volume is classic. The one drawback to this collection is that on a few episodes some of the characters have different voices. Most notable are Donatello and Krang, who get terrible replacement voices for a few episodes.
But overall, these episodes will really remind you why this show was such a hit in the late 80s-early 90s and why we loved it so much as kids. If you watched this show at all, these episodes will bring it all back. There's plenty of cheesy jokes and ridiculous action.
And if you're looking for (not so) sneaky subversion, in one episode after Shredder throws a smoke bomb, Michelangelo looks right at the camera and quips "Dude. I hate it when people smoke and run." That's the stuff that makes children's cartoons into classics!
Great Price, Great Episodes........2006-11-18
There isnt really much i can add that hasnt been said already. Extras would be cool, yet without them, they keep the price extremly low. Usually a series on DVD with extras would cost as much as 2 DVDs without extras. I personally would pefer 2 DVDs instead of 1 with extras, so i am thankfull the ninja turtles DVDs are cheap.
I dont know why some reviewers state the show is "still very-watchable", i disagree, i think the show is brilliant and each episode is more times than not a gem. Im 25 and i watched the Turtles at the peak when they first came out, i still find them very entertaining and this volume continues the trend. "Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamp" & "Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero" are very good episodes and are terrific charaters that appear in later episodes.
Volume 4 hasnt got THE best set of episodes, yet while it has some very ordinary eps it also has some great ones. You are still going to be very happy with this purchase.
Original Turtles.......2006-08-01
I definately enjoyed this DVD, but it helps when you grew up watching it. This is not the best set of episodes in the series by any means. The first season had the best five episodes by far, but the episodes do get better after this lull. The next volume will get better (I think they got new writers) and from then on it's smoothe sailing until about season 8 or so when they get rid of shredder and the you know what hits the fan.
There were some bad sound tracks on this DVD notably Krangs voice in Green with Jealousy. And it doesn't have any special features either.
Personally I loved this DVD and have every intention on buying every volume to come, but that's cause I'm a hardcore fan. I don't need special features. I just need more episodes and an affordable price.
If you liked the turtles but you weren't a huge fan, then buy Volume 1 and wait to buy volumes 5+.
Cowabunga! Awesome Turtle Power Dude!!! .......2006-07-11
I purchased this for my 6 yr old son because he absolutely loves TMNT and because I feel the originals are better oriented for smaller children. The newer TMNT versions that are on Saturday mornings or on DVD seem to be more violent and geered towards older children. As for my son's review of these originals: he says "Cowabunga, Turtle Power!!!"

Teenage Mutant DVDs!.......2007-01-04
One of my childhood's favourite cartoons, this is! It is great that the company behind it chose to release it FINALLY on DVD. And further more the company has decided that for further releases of TMNT they will go with SEASON sets and not with Volumes !!
Buy it for your children as well! They deserve it
Contains some of the best episodes of the series.......2006-12-09
Volume 5 contained the first Lotus Blossom episode, the female Ninja that Leonardo gets smitten with. Michaelangelo's Birthday is yet another Mikey gets kidnapped episode, but the scenes with Shredder and Mikey are just so hillarious. Good episodes. I bought these DVDs and do not regret it.
Good '80s action cartoon.......2006-09-24
We have here 12 episodes of the classic TNMT series based on the comic books by Peter Eastman and Kevin Lair.More characters are introduced:Letherhead the Florida swamp alligator,Usagi Yojimbo a rabbit samurai from another dimension,Lotus the female ninja and Metalhead a turtle robot created by Krang. There are more than 190 eps.If Lionsgate continue releasing volumes with 12 eps each 15 or more will be necesary to include all the seasons. Will be better release full season sets with 30 or 40 eps each one.Hope they can hear this.

Good classic cartoon.......2007-06-16
We have 40 episodes of the Season 4 of TMNT.In these eps the stories focuses mainly on new foes and allies than in Krang,Schredder and the Technodrome which is stuck in Dimension X.I'd like to see if the Technodrome finally gets back to Earth fact I won't be able to see as I can't buy more Dvds due to my economy and my room who hasn't any more space to fill.
