Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals, and a letterbox version is available. --Tom Keogh

It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26
One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."
It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25
LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.
Memories.......2007-06-09
Just as I remembered it with my son (now 42)and enjoyed equally with my grandkids (3 & 5)
Lady and the Tramp.......2007-05-18
Lady and the Tramp was one of my favorite movies in childhood. Watching it again only supports my endeared feelings I have had for so many years. I am glad I was able to watch, go back and experience like I did when I was a child. This movie, I will always hold dear. The talent has transcended into this decade and has kept the meaning of romance and true love alive with the music and animation.
Sweet Disney classic.......2007-05-15
Gorgeous Disney classic film. An original, beautiful story in a new format that can't be missed. The extras make this a very special edition.

One of the remarkable things about making an animated sequel is that actors don't age. It took Disney 46 years to make a sequel to its 1955 hit Lady and the Tramp, yet the events of this made-for-video sequel take place only six months later. Lady and Tramp are getting along fine with their human family, the Darlings, and they have four new puppies. The three girl puppies take after mom, the boy, Scamp, has a lot of dad in him. Scamp dreams of "being a real dog," and that means living on the street as a member of the Junkyard Dogs. Despite his dad's warnings, Scamp (voiced by Scott Wolf) runs off and goes through the trials of a mutt, including run-ins with Junkyard leader Buster (Chazz Palminteri); the dog catcher (Don Knotts); and a fellow stray, Angel (Alyssa Milano). The formula here is the same as other Disney direct-to-video sequels The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, and the justification to return to a classic movie is flimsy at best. To its credit, Disney has made a quality effort in the animation department, adapting sets and characters from the original with great success. But the story is never engaging, the songs are forgettable, and the impact unsustainable (and at 62 minutes, quite trite). Nevertheless, a Disney kid should dig Scamp's rough-and-tumble adventures and the cute tale of puppy love (Scamp and Angel even revisit the Italian diner). The purist: beware. --Doug Thomas

Severe inconsistancies with the original with a crappy plot to boot.......2007-04-20
LATT 2 is about (you guessed it) Tramp's son Scamp, which is actually the good thing about this movie. Like other disney DTVs, LATT 2 sends an overly preachy message to kids about "fitting in", of course. But the inconsistancies with the original LATT are shocking. For example, Scamp is 6 months old in the sequel and is portrayed as the size of a 3 month old puppy. In the original film, Lady was an adult dog at 6 months old. What's with that, people??? Dogs have puppies at 5-6 months old. Read a book and study for once, disney!
As for the plot, it's just a recreation of the original LATT's. This time Scamp digs out of the fence and meets a girl stray named Angel, and ends up bringing her home after a VERY familiar speggetti scene. The songs were horribly sappy and modern pop. The entire thing was crap. What more is there to say? 1 star at most for this.
wut the heck is wrong with disney .......2007-02-24
this movie sux disney sequals were never as good as the original but most of them i enjoy like beauty and the beast 2&3 and the lion king sequals but this one suck the vocies are not even close 2 the original one ( i know the could't get the original vocies but could make and effort to have them sound alike) also the music sux and number three i am wondering if walt disney were still alive would the movie be better ( probably would of ) and if he were still alive would he realsie that he shouldn't make sequals that have the same events that the first one had like the dogs eating spaggati and they kiss that also the ending suck i couldn't belive the disney company would make a s***y ending like that this is defenitly on the bottom shelf of my dvd colecction
Cute, but not comparable to the original........2007-02-21
My son has seen this once and has not shown interest in watching it again. Disappointing, since it was $25 through the Disney DVD Club. I wouldn't reccommend to anyone who loves the original. You will be let down.
Enjoyable!.......2007-01-13
Cute movie. It was nice to have the movie continue on, and it was nice also that some of the memorable characters from the first movie made appearances in this one.
Cute.......2006-12-18
I like the original much better, but this is okay for a sequel. It's a little weird that Lady wasn't in the movie that much, and that Tramp's character was a little overbearing, but for the most part it's decent. The songs aren't that similar to the original, but I personally like them. Scamp and Angel are a really cute couple and I love both of their characters. The love part of the story is in my opinion the best part. However, the dog-catcher was a disappointment. He was just goofy and stupid and not a great antagonist. But most of the characters were good. The plot is simple and predictable. The movie itself is cute and good for little kids.
Overall, a decent sequel but of course not nearly as good as the original.

All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas

classic? psheah. whatever........2007-01-16
3 stars for being Disney.
Minus 2 for not having Aladdin.
That is all.
NINE WRONG ITEMS.......2006-12-25
I ordered the walt disney animated anthology the classic collector's set which was suppose to come with, the little mermaid, hercules, mulan, pinocchio, the jungle book, peter pan, lady and the tramp, the lion king II:simba's pride and one hundred and one dalmations instead we were sent cars, pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest, the sword in the stone, the rescuers, bedknobs and broomsticks, herbie fully loaded, miracles, and the shaggy dog....very disappointing for the kids christmas morning!
Well priced.......2006-09-25
Despite what other reviewers are saying, this collection is a good buy! Why, price AND collectors value. Each of this dvd's are limitted addition- which DON'T get re-released. And the prices... lets go over them, according to Disney's collectors item list.
The Little Mermaid 29.99
The Jungle Book 34.99
Hercules 34.99
Mulan 34.99
Peter Pan 54.99
Pinocchio 34.99
Lady and the Tramp 34.99
Lion King II 29.99
This adds up to over $270. But the set is retailed for $500, how is this still a good deal? Well disney doesn't sell Peter pan, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp as limitted addition and they are hard to find, these prices are based on (with the excetpion of Peter Pan) what they were last officially sold at. What you find is Special and Platinum addition. Further more in 2007 Hercules and Lion II are expected to come out on Platinum, meaning the Limitted Addition ones will be worth more. Yes, limitted addition doesn't have two discs poor movie, but collector wise, its worth more.
Blockbuster has a more accurate price list for when they by these movies. To buy these BRAND NEW, the cheapest one is The Little Mermaid (not in Limitted but in Special Addition) and that is $50. Other such as Hercules are worth $75. Thats adds up to at least $600. So now, its cheaper.
More so, some of these movies have already been released in platinum, meaining they won't EVER be released again.
This is a good deal, and as you can see the so-called "collectors" who troll it haven't done any research.
For those of you who buy it just to watch it, I suggest buying the cheap platinum additions.
Also, a fact for those angered by a sequel appearing. Lion King II sold better than the orignal Lion King, and better then any other Disney Sequel. In fact, its is one of the top 20 Disney movies that sold well. Seems most Disney "fans" loved this movie (and I find it one of the only good Disney Sequels.)
For any of you wanting to start a Disney Colelction that's sure to make a return on your investment- buy this if you can afford it.
A Comment about the reviewer "A Viewer".......2006-09-04
The older titles are not in widescreen because in the days when they came out in theatres, the theatre screens were not widescreen. So it is observing their original aspect ratio. Maybe you should do some research before you review something.
I do however not understand why Lion King II made it on this set...I hate the disney sequels.
I agree it blows.......2006-06-27
I own all of these movies already and I can honestly tell you this collection is a rip off. They're asking way too much for so few movies. Now, you add a few more classics and make them all 2-disc special editions, then hell yeah I'll pay $500 for it. But this just isn't worth it, collection set or not.

Customer Reviews:
IT'S A DOGS WORLD IN "THE LADY AND THE TRAMP".......2006-04-06
IN A NUTSHELL:
Beautiful soft animation with incredible detail brings this character driven doggie-tale to life. The songs, like all great animated classics work into the plot and are a great aid in telling the story, making the film entertaining and making children of all ages happy.
BUT THERE IS MORE -- MUCH MORE: DOG'S TELL THEIR OWN TALE!
Dog's tell their own tale in this one. Unlike "101 Dalmations", which Disney also made several years after this film, the humans are basically not substancial characters. The humans' role is simply as a background setting for the tale of the Lady and the Tramp, which is completely appropriate for this kind of tale.
WHAT MAKES "THE LADY AND THE TRAMP SO DARN GOOD"?
1]- The 9 "Old Men" were really at the top of their game when they animated the major characters of the film. In the featurette, in the 50th anniversary edition, we see exactly what these very talented guys were aiming for and some of the interesting stuff they came up with for Walt Disney.
2]- The music and lyrics are well timed, entertaining and really help set up the many varying moods of the individual scenes. The soundtrack also furthers the plot, and helps us to really like who and what we are seeing on the screen. In short, the tunes help to humanize the doggies, and in that way assist in telling a multi-level tale that means something to kids, something to adults, and something collectively to everyone. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Incredibles" also clearly illustrate that multi-level trait.
3]- The story itself is well constructed with clever while appropriate dialogue, and a very eclectic blend of characters with dogs and humans both being from a very broad and diverse background.
The small town, on the verge of the modern age, still is a special and desirable place to be in this film. Things like telephones and early automobiles are just barely hinted at in a few scenes.
4]- Cinemascope was used, for one of the first times in this film, and simply put it makes for a larger, broader world with a lot more background animation. Disney actually filmed two completely drawn versions of this film, Cinemascope [widescreen], and Full-Screen, because many theatres were not equipped to play cinemascope films in 1956.
DVD FEATURES: THIS VERSION HAS VERY FEW UNLIKE 50TH ANNIVERSARY ED.
BOTTOM LINE:
Get the 50th Anniversary Edition if you want features and a remastered Cinemascope picture. We did and we are delighted.
