There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Pixar's First and Best To Date!.......2007-06-26

TOY STORY is one of those classic movies that should be around for generations. Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear and Cowboy Woody are two of the most lovable and fully developed animated characters ever created. The movie is hilarious throughout though there are also many poignant moments (like Buzz's "I Will Go Sailing No More" song). Many talented actors contributed their voices most notably Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Jim Varney, John Ratzenberger and Don Rickles and the movie includes three memorable songs - "You Got a Friend", "Sailing No More" and Strange Things. And like all good stories it has some important themes including the meaning and value of friendship. Nothing scary for the little ones except perhaps some brief scenes of mutated toys and Syd's threatened violence toward Woody. This is a clever movie with heart that everyone should see.

5 out of 5 stars Toy Story.......2007-06-12

A boy named Andy had a cowboy doll named Woody . Andy loved and had a good time with Woody ,until Andy's birthday . Andy's mom decided they were going to move . Andy got many toys even a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday and everything changed . Andy stopped playing with Woody, and all of the posters , wallpaper, and many other things changed too. Everything changed into Buzz Lightyear.
Woody got angry , so he pulled a trick on Buzz . Buzz had to dodge a globe and flying thumbtacks and he had to jump out of the window. All of Andy's other toys blamed Woody. They said he pushed Buzz out of the window.
Andy's mother took Andy, his little sister, and Woody to Pizza Planet. Woody found Buzz in the car. Buzz was very mad, too. They stopped at the gas station. Wood and Buzz tustled out of the car and began to fight. Andy's car drove away and left them there, luckily they hopped into the Pizza Planet truck. They were driven to Pizza Planet where they find Andy, but Buzz has a different idea. Buzz and Woody hop into a crane game. Six, the crazy neighbor wins an alien, Woody, and Buzz in the crane machine and takes them home.
Six gets a big firework in the mail and attaches the rocket to Buzz. Woody and Sid's broken toys help Buzz out. They miss Andy's car but they get into the moving truck. Sid's dog, Scud, takes Buzz away but Woody takes Andy's remote control car and finds Buzz.. They race for the moving truck but the race car runs out of battery, so Buzz lights the firework and Woody and Buzz go flying in the air and land right into Andy's car. Andy finds them and they all live in a new home together as friends.
I love this movie. This has been my favorite movie since I was little. I think it is a very good movie for all ages to enjoy. I love all the adventures of Woody and Buzz.
I recommend this movie for people of all ages and people who love thrilling adventures.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-06-04

and I got it half price on here. What a deal! I actually bought it to watch with my kids, and they love it as much as I do. If you don't have a copy, you're missing out.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Favorite!.......2007-05-16

I first saw this movie at the theatre while I was in college. I never DREAMED I would be watching it with my kids, and it would still be a favorite 12+ years later! This movie is destined to be on the all time classic list. The lessons learned in this movie are great for kids of all ages, while still being enjoyable for adults to watch. My kids can quote whole blocks of dialogue from the movie, love to re-enact scenes, and still ask for toys from this movie. We first had it on VHS, and had to replace it because we literally wore out the tape. Now you would think that we must watch a lot of TV in our house, but we don't!! We have a movie night once a week as a family, and this is one they would watch almost every time if I let them. It's a great movie for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Disney's movies ever!.......2007-03-14

The 3D animation is awesome, in fact it was the first movie using this technology so it made history because of that. The story is very funny but also teaches a lot of good values to kids and adults, like loyalty work team and friendship. the bonus and dvd box is great too.

I bought this movie for my 2 1/2 year old grandson. He loves it. He gets so excited when I put this on he makes believe he's Buzz Lightyear flying through the air. It's so funny I had to tape him watching the movie. I highly recommend Toy Story. It's a very enjoyable movie for adults too.

5 out of 5 stars My Little Boy loves this movie.......2007-03-15

"Cowboy" movie is what we watch often at our house.
one of the best sequels ever made!

4 out of 5 stars Playtime Fun.......2007-03-11

`Toy Story 2' is a more fluid and intricate sequel than the original. Containing more sight gags and a myriad of peril, the toys come back to life for a new adventure. This time Woody (Tom Hanks) is unraveling, literally at the shoulder socket and not just highstrung. In danger of being sold or taken for granted by his boy owner, Andy, Woody, nevertheless, has the selflessness to pull a toy penguin out of the yard sale bin. In the meantime, a greedy toy collector steals him after the mother refuses to make a deal. As you might expect, the other toys sojourn out to rescue him. What makes it all fun is an attempt to find him at a local toy store, and a journey to the toy collector's high rise. Finding new toys like "Stinky Pete, the Prospector" (Kelsey Grammar) and a Cowgirl Jessie (Joan Cusack) add to the colorful fun. Witty and freewheeling, 'Toy Story 2' springs to life. Fun from start to finish, 'Toy Story' only begs one question: Toys coming to life. Why didn't somebody think of it before?

Toy Story
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing, reawakening the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts (namely Knickknack and Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humor--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys.

Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.

Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Classics.......2007-04-05

How can you do better than both these movies for one low price? I love most everything by pixar, and these are no exception. Better yet, it's great to watch these back to back, and see how the sequel really plays off of the first one so much. If you're reading this, you know how great it is, so stop reading and buy the movies.

I like this better than toy story 1 because it was a little bit more funny and adventorous and add a few new character never before seen i always wish da 2 toy stories where longer because it was just a great movie it reminder me how much i loved to play with toys when i was younger this movie i was also digging the songs they had in the film it may sound childish but peaceful childish i hope they pixar find a miracle in making a toy story 3 that would really b something special a videogame was also made base on da movie da levels on da game was just like da movie so it was to difficult to complete i also enjoy playing da game as well ts 2 is a great movie to watch if u r bored upset or worry about something JB

5 out of 5 stars BACK TO TOYLAND.......2005-10-16

TOY STORY 2 is one of those sequels that is just as good as the movie that spawned it. With even more brilliant Pixar animation and the return of all the main characters from the first, with some additional new ones, TOY STORY 2 is a delightful tale of toys and humans and the bond that exists in spite of the fact that one day the humans will grow up and abandon their toys. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammar and all the other great actors who voiced the characters bring life to these delightful toys and the animation once again is superlative. A wonderful film for the entire family to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars PIXAR not Disney.......2005-09-09

These are great movies. No doubt.

They are Pixar movies. Not Disney movies. Disney is the distributor, NOT the animator. Please don't confuse people. Just because it says Disney before the movie does not make it a "Disney movie". Disney is a mega-corporation churning out drivel for mass consumption.

Are you looking for a good UMD movie? Then please pick this one up for your PSP. This is one of the best movies ever made. Unfortunately Disney isn't making anymore Toy Story movies... :(

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad for psp.......2005-09-04

Im so excited there making a 10th Anniversary edition, but why for psp?? it doesn't ever have bonus features! I would not be able to watch 'THAT' movie on the psp. I think its a mistake to be putting it on the PSP, they should just stick to the DVD on this one.

How can you do better than both these movies for one low price? I love most everything by pixar, and these are no exception. Better yet, it's great to watch these back to back, and see how the sequel really plays off of the first one so much. If you're reading this, you know how great it is, so stop reading and buy the movies.

Amazon.com Essential DVD

Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys.

A Bug's Life
There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye, but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers, he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis- Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just traveling performers afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweet spot for Flik. More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug's Life still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise of the villain. However, the film--a giant worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan.

Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar conjure up another entertainment for all ages. Although the toys look the same as in the 1995 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But, as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. that two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Toy Story!.......2007-01-02

Toy Story is a must have video for any family...Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life are also cute!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Three of the Best Cartoons Ever.......2003-08-24

These three movies are three of the best cartoons ever made. The first Toy Story began Pixar's move into the mainstream and it was a groundbreaker. A Bug's Life will feel a bit more like a children's story compared with the Toy Storys, but, though it may be Pixar's worst, it is better than all of Disney's modern cartoons with the exception of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Toy Story 2 is Pixar's best (Finding Nemo a close second). I've never laughed as hard as I had throughout the story. The comedic moments were perfectly timed. The references to other movies were perfect. And as the movie progressed, the more you laughed. Not only that, but it also had an actual serious message, with a moment in the middle that made you think rather than just laugh.

Truly perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2003-07-29

I love this bundle for my 3 yr old. He loves Buzz and this 3 pack gives him a choice of what to watch. Kids don't need any extras and it saves you money to buy the bundle. You get three great movies at one low price.

For kids who can't get enough of the Toy Story phenomenon, Disney offers this read-along DVD as an educational companion to the popular sequel. It doesn't serve as a replacement for the full-length feature, however--the story is boiled down to a more manageable 16 minutes. Stills are accompanied by dialogue from the movie, voiced by the original actors, plus narration by Steven Weber (Wings). Words appear along the bottom of the screen in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Three musical numbers are represented the same way so children can sing along to "You've Got a Friend in Me," "When She Loved Me," and "Woody's Roundup." Riders in the Sky's video for "Woody's Roundup" is also included, along with 20 vocabulary words (accompanied by pictures), a magic puzzle, and interactive content. (Ages 3 to 6) --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Educational.......2006-02-22

We have all but one of these Disney Read-Along DVDs and the whole family (and friends) loves them. The words are at the bottom of the screen (in choice of 5 languages) which is great for reading skills. The audio also can be switched between 5 languages (Engish, French, German, Italian, Spanish). It is fun and interesting to watch it in the various languages, not to mention a great exposure to languages for children (for us all really).
We regularyly watch them in Italian, to enjoy the language and help keep up our Italian. There are days when we watch a few in German, Spanish or French (the languages we speak least in our home, though I know Spanish and my husband speaks French). We then go through the vocabulary. Best feature is that you can choose from/change the audio or subtitle language at any time (except audio in music videos).

These are great, they are fun, they are very educational, we love them!

Oh, and about not having a book. I suppose we are lucky, I had purchased all of the read-along sets I could find at a Wal-mart (before these DVDs came out). So we have books for half of the DVDs (and also have the CDs & tapes). If only they would make a CD version of the stories in different languages.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the $.......2003-03-10

I agree with the previous reviewer. I bought this as soon as it was released, and I thought it was the film (the photo and details were not available until it was actually released). After watching it a couple times I am very disappointed. This isn't worth the bother. By the movie and a book. Skip Mitch's bouncing ball!

2 out of 5 stars Not enough fun.......2002-12-23

I found this DVD a waste of money. I thought that it would include a book for my child to read along with, which it doesnt. It only has one game and my child mastered it early. It also only have one music video, and a poor choice at that. If I could I would of returned this item for a complete refund. But Amazon doesnt take back opened DVD's. Not recommend, save your money and buy the book.
