Pete and Pete took an alternative rock approach to the family sitcom. In other words, this wasn't your dad's situation comedy. Is it any wonder so many alternative musicians, like Juliana Hatfield, the B-52's Kate Pierson, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, and Blondie's Debbie Harry flocked to the (fictional) town of Wellsville? Nor could independent film actors, like Richard Edson (Stranger Than Paradise), Martin Donovan (Saved!), and Steve Buscemi (Fargo), resist the allure of the appealingly offbeat Wrigley family.
Meet the Wrigleys: redheaded teenager Pete (Michael Maronna, Home Alone), redheaded elementary school student Pete (Danny Tamberelli, The Mighty Ducks) and his tattoo Petunia, Dad (Hardy Rawls), Mom (Judy Grafe)--and the metal plate in her head. First season cast members include Big Pete's almost-girlfriend Ellen (Alison Fanelli), Little Pete's pal Natasha (Heather Matarazzo, Welcome to the Dollhouse), bus driver Stu (Damian Young), and Little Pete's personal superhero, Artie (Toby Huss), the strongest man in the world. Buscemi appears as Ellen's dad in "Apocalypse Pete" and would return for another episode in the second season.
The first season followed three years of 60-second shorts. It features 12 adventures (eight regular episodes plus four specials). Highlights include "King of the Road," in which the Wrigleys battle for road trip supremacy, "Tool and Die," in which Big Pete learns not to judge a shop teacher by his cover, and "Hard Day's Pete," in which Little Pete forms the Blowholes with Syd Straw and Marshall Crenshaw. Then there's "Don't Tread on Pete," in which Little Pete utters the immortal line, "Is this guy pickin' your scabs the way he's pickin' my scabs?" The Adventures of Pete and Pete ran on Nickelodeon for three well-loved, much-missed seasons. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

almost as good as your favorite song.......2007-07-02
Very rarely can you get a piece of your childhood back, but I swear this dvd did it for me. The show was so cutting edge, thoughtful, humourous, it's amazing. How has kid's tv gone DOWNHILL from here? At any rate, you'll really enjoy seeing this show again and it's funny musings on childhoood. The biggest bonus for me was seeing some of my favorite people pop up, ie Iggy Pop and Steve Bushemi ect. This dvd set basically rocks.
a must own!.......2007-06-23
I never realized how sophisticated this show was when I watched it as a child. It is almost depressing to watch knowing the garbage that is out there on kids' networks today! What has happened to Nickelodeon?
You could watch the entire season without being bored.
I WANT SEASON THREE! I feel cheated after buying seasons 1 & 2 and no season 3 in sight!
A CHRISTMAS HIT!!!.......2007-01-20
MY 14 YEAR OLD SON "M" WANTED THIS DVD FOR CHRISTMAS AND HE REALLY ENJOYED THIS DVD, I ALSO GOT SEASON 2. HE USED TO WATCH THIS SHOW WHEN HE WAS STILL IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SO WHEN HE RECEIVED BOTH DVD'S FOR XMAS, HE'S BEEN WATCHING SINCE XMAS DAY.
Offbeat and Fun.......2007-01-12
If you've never seen Pete & Pete on Nickelodeon, you've missed out. The characters are quirky, strange and a lot of fun. I watched this show with my children as they were growing up and it's still really great to watch now. I highly recommend this TV show for anyone aged 6-96.
A child's perception?.......2007-01-03
Pete & Pete is a wonderful series of shows. Similar in style to "A Christmas Story", these stories are related through the eyes of the young, except in a modern setting.
It is said that humor only works when it contains an element of truth. And so Pete & Pete works as many levels, as it reflects on the experience of being young, and provides significant insights on the apparent comedy of the adult world.
It is thoroughly enjoyable, especially for those with the youth or wisdom to see life's comedy.

A new neighbor joins the redheaded brothers for their second season on Nickelodeon. The accident-prone Nona Mecklenberg (Michelle Trachtenberg) makes her first appearance in the premiere ("Grounded for Life"), where she is introduced as "the loneliest girl in Wellsville." By the end of the episode, that's no longer true as she and Little Pete (Danny Tamberelli) have become fast friends. Alas, nobody can take the place of his pet lizard, Gary, who makes his debut--and swan song--in the following adventure ("The Big Quiet'). Mona's dad, James (Iggy Pop, looking sharp in cardigan and khakis), will join the cast just in time for "Halloweenie," in which Pumpkin Eaters terrorize the neighborhood. As for Big Pete (Michael Maronna), he'll finally ask Ellen (Alison Fanelli) out in "Time Tunnel". Endless Mike (Rick Gomez), in a rare moment of kindness, will lend him his car. It won't really change things, however. Maybe some people are meant to be friends--and others to be enemies. Then there are the Wrigley parents. In the first season, Dad (Hardy Rawls) fought for road trip supremacy. Now it's about having the best lawn and catching Bob, the biggest fish in the lake. Metal plate aside, Mom (Judy Grafe) does what she can to keep the craziness in check.
As before, Big Pete narrates in that delightful deadpan, and many old favorites are back: bus driver Stu (Damian Young), math teacher Miss Fingerwood (Syd Straw), Ellen's dad, Mr. Hickle (Steve Buscemi), and strongman Artie (Toby Huss). Little Pete's personal superhero will make his final appearance in the two-part "Farewell, My Little Viking." Guest stars include Gordon Gano as substitute teacher Zank ("X=Why?"), Bebe Neuwirth as McGinty the mailcarrier, David Johansen as park ranger Thorsen ("On Golden Pete"), and Chris Elliot as psychic meter man Ray ("Sick Day"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This is the real deal. .......2007-06-11
Ok Pete and Pete was always one of my favorite shows as a kid. I mean Big Pete and Little Pete were really believable characters, and I remember watching the show to the point of thinking when I walked down the street, Little Danny or Nona would come out of their house and want to play. Really good acting! (I knew reality, just painting a picture) I loved the entrance music, though I have to admit it kinda had the wannabe grunge punk sound to it. I love it! Anyways this show is actually enjoyable to watch, even at 22 years old. Not this crap thats on tv nowadays.
A great set but..................2007-04-07
Nickelodeon SUCKS! How dare they only give us seasons 1 and 2 only. Season 3 was due out March 2006 and got canceled. That is a real d--- faced move. Nick, you suck. Give us the rest of the series. I'm sofa king mad at Nick.
one strange but funny show.......2007-03-30
My husband and I use to watch this with our kids, when they were growing up. My husband really loved the show, as it has a very strange side to it. I have bought season one and season two for him and the kids to watch together. Though the "kids" are young adults, they still humor the old man and watch.
pete & pete rules.......2007-03-10
all i have to say is that if you love pete & pete, buy it. just buy it.
Not quite what I expected .......2007-02-25
As someone said before it will have been good if this dvd had some dubbed language and subtitles. I am from Latin America and as a kid I watched the episodes in Spanish and I wanted to experience that again, that is a big mistake of nickelodeon, also the quality of the image is poor. Definitely not what I expected I hope they will release another version with at least spanish subtitles.

Customer Reviews:
Claymation Rules!.......2007-01-04
Claymation walks the line between two-dimensional animation and real-world, three-dimensional stuff. And a delightful interface it is too. Wallace and Gromit are about as charming a twosome as anyone could dream up. That they are oh so British to boot only adds to the pleasure of watching the stories unfold. If you have seen a bit of claymation and what it can do or you are just curious to see what the buzz is all about, this collection is a great place to start. You get several different stories to play with and they are just as much fun the second time around. Very creative stuff indeed!
NLopez.......2006-11-10
I enjoyed them both, and I recommend them to those who enjoy what Wallace & Gromit do. But I felt that it wasn't as good as Chicken Run, which I also own, I think They needed a better story line up to the standard that was used in Chicken Run. Still I look forward to what else They will attemp to do.
highly recommended.......2006-08-27
An excellent set--with one purchase you can own all the Wallace and Gromit features.
Gives Cheese A Good Name.......2006-04-04
Gromit, faithful, sacrificing, long-suffering pet dog of inventor extraordinaire and cheese freak, Wallace, solves the mystery of the Were-Rabbit, and along the way we laugh our heads off. Frankly, I don't want to know how they animate these films, how they produce the subtle facial and body expressions of the characters, how they come up with the outrageous, delightful story lines, or how they write the double entendre dialogue that plays perfectly for children and adults alike. It would spoil the fun of falling into the weird world of Wallace & Gromit. This bizarre and hilarious film is complemented in this boxed set by "Three Amazing Adventures" (my favorite being about a trip to the Moon to have a vacation devoted totally to cheese -- green, of course) and 10 shorts that focus on Wallace the Inventor in all his glory.
It's worth it to own the DVDs, because there is so much going on that you could not hope to catch all the jokes, visual and verbal, the first, or even the second time around.
It is perfectly clear why "The Were Rabbit" won an Oscar this year. Truly entertaining!
Be warned - Were-Rabbit is Fullscreen in boxed set!.......2006-03-18
This would have been a five star review if the fact that the feature (The Curse of the Were-Rabbit)was panned & scanned (full screen)would have been mentioned in the title.
Both the feature and the shorts are great Wallace & Gromit fun. Were-Rabbit is the best yet, and it even had some twists that I wasn't expecting. In the tradition of the Muppets and Loony Tunes, Aardman has peppered adult in-jokes in with the all ages fun, so Mom and Dad will stay interested and the kids won't get it for years.
As with Chicken Run, the focus of the commentary is on how long each shot takes to make. Yes, claymation is time consuming. We get it.
Recommended for people who do not want a wide-screen presentation. I'm giving my copy to my In-Laws.

dark but good.......2007-05-16
An unusual and remarkable mixture of claymation and stop-motion animation, this movie is a twisted take on the stories of Tom Thumb and Jack the Giant Killer. Pretty creepy--lots of insects, grimy back alleys, and a sinister science lab. A must for lovers of the genre or for anyone who admires Jan Svankmeyer.
Simply weird.......2006-11-20
Possibly the strangest film ever made. This is extremely creative, but it has a nasty, violent undercurrent to it. I gave it 5 stars because it is a brilliant piece of work, but I actually didn't care for it. It was just too weird for me. There is hardly any talking at all in this film, which sometimes makes it hard to follow the storyline. Bugs seem to run rampant all over everything, and Tom looks like E.T.
But I do reccomend viewing this because you will not see anything like it.
The Triumph of Tom.......2005-12-13
Rivetting claymation and stop-motion acting after the Svankmajer vision of animation. This is a total justification of the means employed to cast a grotesque view of Innocence abroad in a corrupt world. The corrupt world is peopled with freaks who totter and stutter about barely audible, and bereft of much other than appetites; sort of Max Beckmann animated. Mesmerizingly inventive; with Tom's world chock to the eyeballs with bugs and creepies plaguing a scape of compressed alleys and decrepit buildings. With a William Burroughs infested script, this is the antidote to Wallace and Gromit, if one were required. Highly recommended.
trippers outta the woodwork?!u betcha!.......2005-12-02
this is not your mother's claymation I say! the tom thumb puppet is so darn insanely tripped-out you'll swear someone put something in your drink, but there will be not a single ramone in sight!this film is chock full of great animation, colors, music, and tells the story of a very lost and curious character!those who liked this or are into jan svankmager, the brothers quay,dr suess, etc will be amused and most pleasently horrified!!!
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb.......2005-08-16
A true masterpiece. This film will stand out as one of the best animation features of all time. The director has made small figures come alive better than actors. The sound track is fantastic and the images you won't soon forget. This is a real treat for anyone who loves cinema!

The cold-war paranoia of the McCarthy era had America in its grip when the original Invaders from Mars was released in 1953, and this atmospheric, highly influential science fiction film--the first of its kind to be filmed in color--was perfectly in tune with the mood of its time. Jimmy Hunt plays the quintessential American boy of the post-war years--a freckle-faced kid named David who's curious, alert, and possibly prone to elaborate flights of fancy. Then, during a midnight thunderstorm, he witnesses the landing of a flying saucer that buries itself underground in a nearby field. David's father (Leif Erickson) indulges his son's urging to investigate... and thus begins a bizarre and chilling story of alien invasion, with David's cries of "Martians!" falling on deaf ears as more and more adults are abducted, probed, and placed under alien control.
Designed and directed by William Cameron Menzies (one of the greatest production designers of Hollywood's golden age, whose credits include Gone with the Wind), this eerie little thriller benefits from Menzies's skill at combining physical settings with psychological undercurrents of paranoid terror and resistance against the alien threat. It's still most effective for younger viewers, with Jimmy Hunt providing the story's youthful point of view. And although the malevolent aliens look campy now, with a leader who resembles a bubble-brained squid in a fishbowl, Invaders from Mars remains one of the seminal science fiction films of its time, paving the way for The War of the Worlds and the rapidly developing trend of alien-invasion thrillers. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Invaders from Mars, still one of the better films........2007-05-25
I'm watching the British version as I write this, I just saw the American version.
First of all I take exception that some reviews keep mentioning the zippers in the back of the martian's. What did they expect, magnetic clasp, buttons, hooks and loops? Unless you were expecting to see naked martians I'd say the zippers are just fine--they are wearing cloths and shoes you know. Nor do I really believe it falls into campy--so old it is amusingly funny. I feel they did a fine job except for that "mutant" crack they kept using as an excuse to have martian slaves or servants. The obvious science involved in this film (inside the spaceship) looked fine to me--and who cares if they turned over a can of latex paint and blew bubbles through it to simulate the martians melting walls of dirt...it looked fine to me.
This movie, though a popcorn movie, is still somewhat serious and acted very well by the kid and all the cast.
So let's get to it.
PROS:
1. Neat idea carried out properly.
2. Fine acting, that's a star.
3. Written just fine, that's a star, lots of tense moments and no filler I could spot, no sub plots.
4. Neat special effects.
5. Look at how those cuties dressed. I remember them from when I was a kid. Look at the scene where the kid runs to his mother at night. She wakes up, hair is brushed, lips properly lipsticked, the correct amount of war paint around the eyes. Yes sir, maybe we shouldn't tell them that the realitly was they all went to bed in curls and cold cream. But I got to tell you, did they all look like that outside the house...well, they tried to.
six. Just got to the end of the British version, I think there's a couple extra scenes in it!
7. Movie starts out with the right type of science fiction music and background paintings and voice-over of the day. On the back of the case it says 1953--the year I was born. They did a fine job making this a character study as well as an action movie. Even when the General's sergeant got sucked into the hole and the General says to the man restraining him, "Renaudies' been with me twenty years...we may have no counter weapon but if it's a fight they want they're going to get it!" Even that one line character study is sufficent to understand the General's mind set. Yes...above average writing.
8. Lots of stock footage showing the Army packing up equipment and moving it to the site. So what, you can't have a military unit go on manuevers just so you can get some new stock footage for a movie...not even back then.
I don't see any reason to go futher. This is one of those old classical science fiction movies that cries for popcorn and a deeper study to get its' full impact. CONS: There really aren't any no matter what everybody else says. The only thing you could have done better is updating the special effects and we've seen what Hollywood does when it remakes a movie--so we don't want that!
Looking at it more...no, definitly well written, acted and directed.
So that's it, Buy, don't rent.
NEEDS A BETTER DVD TREATMENT.......2007-05-03
"This is a very good movie with a cheesy alien suit. The DVD transfer is horrible and this film deserves better! No cheese collection is complete without it!"
Invaders from Mars.......2007-02-21
Good campy Sci-Fi flick. The only drawback to the movie is that it should be in wide screen.
Invaders from mars-original version.......2007-01-12
Makes a good compliment to the original version from the 50's
RIVETING AND FUN.......2007-01-11
This movie was recommended to me by a friend who had watched it as a child. Since my fiance loves sci-fi movies of ALL generations--and since I knew he had not seen this one--I bought it for him for Christmas. We watched it almost immediately and thorougly enjoyed it, even the "special effects" which seemed to be somewhat ahead of their time. The story was compelling, along with its curious ending; but the sets, clothing, and culture of the 1950's, as well as the special effects, made watching this film thoroughly entertaining.
