Roy Rogers takes on social relevance....kinda!.......2006-03-27

"Springtime in the Sierras" is one of my favorite Roy Rogers westerns, and I've seen most of 'em. It's one of several that break away from the somewhat formulaic pattern that most of his westerns (and those of Gene Autry, or Tex Ritter, etc) followed. Having been made in 1947, "Springtime" was filmed at a time when Rogers was very popular and the western genre was absolutely dominant at the cinema, specifically in the form of Saturday matinees. By 1947, there had been thousands of Hollywood westerns made, and writers were looking for ways to make the stories fresher. In this one, the "hook" is a kind of a political advocacy campaign against poaching wild animals (the second "hook" is that Roy has two potential love interests instead of the one dictated by western formula!).

Travelling in the Sierras to deliver a herd, Roy and his hands find the first fawn of the spring, but the little guy is lost from his mother. Roy takes the fawn to a local animal sanctuary, only to find that the mother deer is there, dying of an illegal gunshot wound from poachers. Then we have a real "Bambi" moment. The mother deer dies, and the rest of the movie revolves around stopping the poachers.

At first glance, this sounds like a PC fluff piece, but remember that it was made in 1947. Early in the movie, it is clearly pointed out that these poachers are dispicable not because they infringe on animal rights, but because their illegal hunting deprives America's youth of the chance to kill the animals themselves! When I heard that, I breathed a sigh of relief. The storyline up until then was so politically correct that it had me worried!

Seriously, "Springtime in the Sierras" is a great Roy Rogers western that serves not only as a way to get your cowboy kicks, but also to understand attitudes about hunting in the 1940's. Apparently, back then there was a shortage of deer. No worries on that front these days! They just about own the highways now! Whew!

Good Movie But It Is Not In Color.......2005-01-16

There are several Roy Rogers movies listed as being in color on VHS when they are not. They are the videos by Alpha Omega Publications dated Oct. 19, 2004. This is one of those that is in B&W and not in color.
