One of the best action movies ever made, in a cleaned-up print restoring crucial parts of the story. No cavalry ever rode in with more epochal impact than the Wild Bunch in the legendary opening scene. Their steel-eyed leader, Pike (William Holden), and his robbers in stolen army uniforms help an old lady across the street, and then spark a massacre led by Pike's old crony Thornton (Robert Ryan), sprung from jail to hunt down his old gang. In just a few minutes, Sam Peckinpah sets the scene--a dusty Texas town in 1913--sketches a dozen vividly individualized characters, and choreographs one of the most realistic, influential, brilliantly photographed shootouts under the pitiless sun. The cast is superb (even Ernest Borgnine!), the dialog crackling, the bitterly ambiguous moral of the story hard-earned. It's the deeper, dark flip side to 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Consider buying the letterbox Wild Bunch, the review collection Doing It Right, and the Peckinpah bio "If They Move... Kill 'Em!" --Tim Appelo

Description

Outlaws on the Mexican-U.S. frontier face the march of progress, the Mexican army and a gang of bounty hunters led by a former member while they plan a robbery of a U.S. army train. No one is innocent in this gritty tale of of desperation against changing times. Pump shotguns, machine guns and automobiles mix with horses and winchesters in this ultraviolent western.

4 out of 5 stars Bloody eye candy.......2007-07-03

This bloody extravaganza made Sam Peckinpah's reputation. A kind of fantasy of machismo set along the Texas-Mexico border around 1913--yes, very late for a Western--The Wild Bunch has thrilled adolescent boys and twentysomethings for almost four decades. The slowmo shots of horses falling awkwardly, of bodies squirting blood as they fall off of roof tops or cliffs, of tough hombres talking tough while they grab loose women and bottles of booze replete with numerous other bits of acrobatic mayhem amid some fantastic scenery makes this a non-cerebral feast for the eyes. The stars, William Holden (Pike Bishop), Ernest Borgnine (Dutch Engstrom), Robert Ryan (Deke Thornton), Edmund O'Brien (Freddie Sykes), etc. are first rate and on form. The plot is a variant of the old "one last job" story which begins with Pike's not-quite over-the-hill gang doing one last bank robbery.

Needless to say something goes wrong. Interspersed between the opening credits we see Pike's gang ride into town dressed as members of the US Army Calvary. On roof tops are some rascals and scallywags with rifles, missing teeth, and murderous gleams in their eyes. They are led by Deke Thornton, who it turns out is working for the railroad. What follows is a good old fashioned shoot 'em up of rather unlikely proportions as Pike's gang exists the bank with bags of loot, dodging and slinging bullets with abandon.

Turns out...well, no I won't say because I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say, they need to do another job, this one a good old-fashioned train robbery with a few tricks and extras, like blowing up a bridge and running a locomotive at full throttle backwards. And then across the border into Mexico and some fun and games with Mexican generals, senoritas, banditos and such.

Been there, done that. But Peckinpah's colorful yarn has a few things you might not have seen before, and some of those things that you have seen, he did first and better. The Mexican color with a lot of authentic-looking extras doing authentic-looking Mexican activities was good. The fact that the Spanish spoken was not translated (and didn't need to be translated) was good. General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) as the drunken, power-hungry warlord bandito was good. The kids feeding scorpions to the ants and then burning them was good. Edmund O'Brien as a degenerate Gabby Hayes kind of character was a hoot and a holler. But mostly this was about grim-faced men, toughened by long hours in saddle under the hot sun who, after decades of outlawing, finally ride gloriously into that last battle. Next stop: boot hill.

I watched the "original director's cut" that runs 145 minutes. At no time was my brain involved, but my eyes couldn't stop watching.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Bunch.......2007-07-02

Maverick director Sam Peckinpah released this blood-soaked western ballet in 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, igniting protests over his graphic depiction of violence. Yet some images, like the opening sequence of children watching a nest of fire ants attack a scorpion, have a cruel poetic force. Boasting a powerhouse veteran cast and virtually non-stop action, this mesmerizing film is not for the squeamish, but fans of pure western action and gunplay should cherish this pounding, hard-edged film.

3 out of 5 stars It's all been done before........2007-05-27

The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah, 1969)

I will readily admit that my confusion over the prominence of The Wild Bunch in the annals of film criticism probably stems from my having bought into the hype. When I hear people wax poetic about the movie, one thing always comes to the surface sooner or later--the previously unheard-of level of violence in the movie. Here I was expecting something... different; even the tamest giallo lords it over The Wild Bunch in terms of violence. Mario Bava was doing it years before. What makes Peckinpah's opus so special? Not the violence.

The other thing that seems to come up often is that Peckinpah's version of the west is decidedly different than that which had been offered before, but again I head back to Italy, and this time flog the dead horse of Sergio Leone, whose westerns were riddled with grey areas long before this.

Okay, so Peckinpah was the first guy to do it in America. And it got John Wayne pretty mad. (But, really, he was already mad at Clint Eastwood for the Leone movies.) But from every other standpoint--plot, characters, pacing, cinematography, direction--Peckinpah has done better. (The pinnacle came three years later with Straw Dogs.) It's not bad, but don't go into it expecting one of the greatest films of all time, or you're bound to be disappointed. ***

1 out of 5 stars Not As Advertised-.......2007-04-20

For the third time in 10 years, I have purchased another copy of "The Wild Bunch". And for the third time in 10 years, I have been utterly disappointed. I don't know what all of these other reviewers watched in 1969, but what I watched was a much, much wilder bunch with much more grusome footage at the old Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas. Someone, apparently do gooders, had the film cut back to the bland piece of work that you see in this DVD. Someone should sue Warner Bros. for false advertising. I am still looking for the original film and would pay good money for it, if it even still exists. In the killings in the original film the bodies struck by bullets, immediately went to slow motion as a stream of blood shot from the bullet hole in the beginning murderous scene. There is only one brief shot of this type and the rest, a least a couple of dozen were cut out and are still cut out. Save your money, if you think your getting the original.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than just a violent film..........2007-04-06

This is one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Most people talk about its violence level. The violence here is incredible, and it's still strong and potent today. It shocked the living hell out of everyone back in 1969. It made some people vomit because it was so intense. However, while I do like the shootouts of this film, it's the depth that the characters have that really make this film stand out for me. Some of the speeches Pike gives are quite good, stressing that you stand by a man, and if you don't, you're like some animal, you're finished. Pike and the Bunch lived by these words, and in the end, they died by these words. They lived in a time where your word and your honor meant something, and you lived by a certain code that you tried to stay true to. Nowadays, this kind of message is seen as old fashioned and made fun of mercilessly. It shouldn't be. Despite the Bunch being criminals, they retain their sense of dignity at the end. Even Robert Ryan, Pike's former friend who is now chasing the Bunch, has a dignity as well, keeping his word to the bastard railroad men. But when he's finished with the posse, he stays in Mexico with the locals instead of returning to the US. You don't hate Ryan for what he's doing, and Pike doesn't hate him either. They each just want to live, and they got a job to do. The ending is one of the more poignant and brutal endings ever filmed. The Bunch got their bounty, and are whooping it up with the local whores. Angel had made a deal with them to keep one case of guns for his village, and they agreed. They told the general Mapache that they lost it on the trail. Mapache didn't believe them and accused Angel of stealing it, so the Bunch let him keep it. While the Bunch are drinking and partying, they stop and realise what they have to do. They go back and rescue Angel, not because they have to, but because they need to. They didn't want to abandon their friend. They probably knew they would be killed, and they didn't give a damn about it. I find this extraordinarily moving and quite powerful. After a decade of smug "irony", things like dignity and honor are punchlines. I don't think they are, and I never will. I really like the message of brotherhood and honor here, and I think this is a masterpiece....

Just maybe the most shamelessly enjoyable of Cecil B. DeMille's pseudo-historical epics, this rumbustious frontier saga offers a three-for-one Western legends combo--Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Calamity Jane, all cutting up in the 1870s, with George Armstrong Custer and Abraham Lincoln thrown in for good measure. (Wait a minute, Lincoln was assassinated in 1865--oh, never mind.) Truth to tell, Buffalo Bill doesn't really pull his weight, since (1) he is hopelessly distracted by virtue of having recently married and (2) he's played by James Ellison, an eternal juvenile normally relegated to second-banana duty in Paramount's Hopalong Cassidy series. However, Gary Cooper's Wild Bill and Jean Arthur's Calamity supply enough star power to light up the Dakotas and parts of Missouri.

Every once in a while, DeMille and his small army of writers stumble upon an actual historical fact. Bill Cody did fight to the death with an Indian chief named Yellow Hand. George Custer and James Butler Hickok did both buy the farm in the summer of 1876. (Custer's Last Stand is handled imaginatively, if cheaply, as a vision narrated by a wandering Cheyenne warrior--none other than C.B.'s son-in-law Anthony Quinn in one of his earliest screen appearances.) Jack McCall (veteran weasel Porter Hall) did find himself in Deadwood, South Dakota, at the same time Wild Bill was drawing aces and eights in a poker game ... though McCall was not necessarily affiliated with DeMille's favorite villain, Charles Bickford, in the business of running guns to the Indians. --Richard T. Jameson

3 out of 5 stars Obscure battlefield accurately depicted.......2006-06-20

As someone who has actually been to the hard-to-find Beecher's Island battlefield site (in the badlands of NE Colorado), I was pleasantly amazed to note how accurately the terrain is depicted in "The Plainsman." I have been to the sites of other notable Indian fights, including both the Fetterman Massacre and Little Big Horn, and although distinctive in their own ways, they are basically just dusty hills in barren grasslands. Beecher's Island was different. It occured near a rare shady spot along a "river" which now is usually nothing but a dry shallow gulch running through some private grazing land; at the time of Major Forsyth's engagement with the Cheyenne under Roman Nose the Arikara River was a formidable obstacle with a few spits of sandy ground--the "island"-jutting up in the middle. At one end of the gulch/river bed there is a bluff some fifty feet or so high from behind which the Cheyenne formed, launched their charges, and rallied. At the summit of the bluff lies Roman Nose, killed in the battle, his lonely grave marker still (as of the mid-1990s) faithfully tended by unknown locals. The "island" itself looked completely unlike any other battlefield of the Plains Indian Wars, being tiny, made of sand, and strewn with dirftwood, which Forsyth and his little band formed into a sort of breastworks.

Almost all of this terrain is faithfully recreated in "The Plainsman." Obviously DeMille didn't shoot this in the Colorado Badlands; there was a contemporary pencil sketch in Harper's Weekly, and perhaps they based the scene on that. Whatever the reason, I was impressed. Now, if only they had had the Buffalo Soldiers rescue Forsyth's party, as they did in reality (a monument to them is present at the battlefield). . . .

I would be curious to know if anyone else has some insight into this?

The three stars are a compromise: 4 for entertainment value, 2.5 for historical accuracy.

it is a classic western with legendary western
characters such as wild bill hickock, calamity jane,

one of the better films with gary cooper where his
natural charm comes through. it does not disappoint
fans of westerns.

4 out of 5 stars Faux Historical Epic; Nevertheless Engaging Entertainment!.......2005-03-06

"The Plainsman" represents the directorial prowess of Cecil B. DeMille at its most inaccurate and un-factual. It sets up parallel plots for no less stellar an entourage than Wild Bill Hickok (Gary Cooper), Buffalo Bill Cody (James Ellison), Calamity Jane (Jean Arthur), George Armstrong Custer and Abraham Lincoln to interact, even though in reality Lincoln was already dead at the time the story takes place. Every once in a while DeMille floats dangerously close toward the truth, but just as easily veers away from it into unabashed spectacle and showmanship. The film is an attempt to buttress Custer's last stand with a heap of fiction that is only loosely based on the lives of people, who were already the product of manufactured stuffs and legends.

TRANSFER: Considering the vintage of the film, this is a moderately appealing transfer, with often clean whites and extremely solid blacks. There's a considerable amount of film grain in some scenes and an absence of it at other moments. All in all, the image quality is therefore somewhat inconsistent, but it is never all bad or all good - just a bit better than middle of the road. Age related artifacts are kept to a minimum and digital anomalies do not distract. The audio is mono but nicely balanced.

EXTRAS: Forget it. It's Universal!

BOTTOM LINE: As pseudo-history painted on celluloid, this western is compelling and fun. Just take its characters and story with a grain of salt - in some cases - a whole box seems more appropriate!

4 out of 5 stars CALAMITY JANE.......2001-11-03

On September 17, 1868, while fording the south fork of the Republican River in what is now Colorado, General "Sandy" Forsyth was ambushed by 600 Cheyennes and Arapahoes. Outnumbered ten to one, Forsyth and his troops took refuge on a brushy island in the middle of the river and for nine days stood off one of the fierest charges in the history of Indian wars. The ten years which followed this gallant episode saw the final defeat of the Indians on the Northern half of the Great Plains. Some 300 battles were fought, chiefly against the Sioux and Cheyennes. In 1876, the two nations rallied to wipe out General Custer's regiment on the Little Big Horn. By 1880, Indians were no longer a power on the plains. Cecil B. DeMille, the producer of super-colassal spectacles of the thirties and forties goes the American West for THE PLAINSMAN. The film opens with a prologue shot of President Lincoln and his Cabinet, from then on compresses many actual events in the history of the Great Plains. Its hero and heroine are two of the most famous characters of the West "Wild" Bill Hickok and "Calamity Jane" ably portrayed by Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur (whose Calamity is decidedly more glamourous - with rouge and mascara applied - than was the real Martha Jane Canary!) In one segment, the Cheyennes ambush Buffalo Bill for twelve minutes ; it was considered quite an exciting climax to 1937 audiences.

Trapper Jed Cooper (Victor Mature) signs on as a scout at a remote army post in Oregon. In time, Colonel Marston (Robert Preston) arrives at the fort and, as ranking officer, relieves Captain Riordan (Guy Madison) of his command. Riordan is outraged to find out that Marston lost his fort and men to an Indian attack; in fact, he was assigned to a Western outpost after squandering the lives of 1,500 men in a Civil War battle. Marston's next plan is to order the men of the fort, almost all rookie soldiers, into battle against experienced Indian warriors. What would otherwise be a fairly routine Western drama is enlivened by Anthony Mann's direction, lavish CinemaScope cinematography, and fine, offbeat performances all around. The story line reflects the changes that were beginning to work their way into the Western genre by the 1950s. Savage Wilderness (taken from the novel The Gilded Rooster, by Richard Emery Roberts) may not quite pack the dramatic impact of prime John Ford, but it's still a fine example of the state of the Western in 1956. Also known as The Last Frontier. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

They called him the Butcher of Shiloh. Personally responsible for the wrongful deaths of 1500 men, Colonel Frank Marston (Robert Preston, Northwest Mounted Police) has been exiled to the farthest reaches of the American frontier. Driven insane by disgrace, Marston plans his return to glory by leading a squad of raw recruits in a suicide raid against the Indian Nation. Although Jed Cooper (Victor Mature, My Darling Clementine) is the only man who can stop him, the savage frontiersman is torn between saving the lives of his friends or letting them ride to their doom. For Jed's in love with the Colonel's wife (Anne Bancroft, 1962 Academy Award winner for Best Actress, The Miracle Worker), and only Marston's death will set her free.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mature Western.......2005-07-22

Victor Mature worked well in the Western genre, such as his performance as Doc Holliday in My Darling Clementine. The Last Frontier is another good performance by Mature, bolstered by strong support from Robert Preston, James Whitmore, and Guy Madison.

Mature plays a trapper/scout who is thinking of settling down in civilization. While he and his two trapper friends visit a fort in the wilderness, Mature falls for the young wife of an Army colonel who is anxious to address the danger coming from warring Indians in the area of the fort. Mature makes a play for the wife, sending Mature, the colonel and the whole fort to the brink of disaster.

The perfomances here are good, to a large extent due to the talents involved, plus the stout direction of Anthony Mann, who proved that he could take a seemingly mild-mannered actor like James Stewart and turn him into a rousing man of action. The Last Frontier is a good addition to anyone's Western DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars THE LAST FRONTIER IS ONE OF THE 3 BEST WESTERNS EVER MADE!!!.......2001-09-24

THE LAST FRONTIER--also known as SAVAGE WILDERNESS--is one of the 3 best westerns ever made!!! #1 is SHANE, #2 is THE UNFORGIVEN, and #3 is THE LAST FRONTIER!!!

Victor Mature shines in his leading role as Jed Cooper, a rough, tough frontiersman who finds his whole world changing around him as he meets the Union officers of a fort in frontier territory, Colonel Marston (Robert Preston) and Captain Riordan
(Guy Madison). This is an adult western, with well developed characters that help the movie to avoid the usual good guys in white hats, bad guys in black hats storyline of most westerns, as the hard drinking and hard living Mature struggles to understand civilization. The title song is great, the photography is great, and so is the directing and acting.

Guy Madison--a former radio announcer--uses his voice extremely well to control his scenes, and Robert Preston is excellent as the obsessed military man. And Anne Bancroft is superb as Preston's military wife, as she is literally swept off her feet by the bold Mature.

Guy Williams--later of "Zorro," and "Lost in Space" has one of his many 1950s bit parts in movies with major stars, constantly in the background--but never seen in closeups--as Private Benton.

THE LAST FRONTIER is different from other westerns in almost every way, from its treatment of Indians to its portrayal of the military, to its development of the romance between an uncivlized frontiersman and a civilized married woman. SHANE had the romance with a married woman--suggested--but no Indians, and THE UNFORGIVEN had neither.

THE LAST FRONTIER IS ONE OF THE 3 BEST WESTERNS EVER MADE!!!

3 out of 5 stars Victor Mature is excellent!.......2001-01-21

"The Savage Wilderness" tries very hard to achieve a realistic atmosphere but misses the mark under the weight of its Hollywood contrivances. Still, the movie is a very notable attempt at an adult treatment of the genre, and the plot and presentation are intense enough to hook the viewer from the start. Robert Preston plays the most interesting character, a commanding officer determined to go into battle at any cost to his personnel or his marriage, but Victor Mature gives the best performance as a standard semi-savage/semi-civilized trapper-hero. Guy Madison plays the commanding officer who must defer to Preston, and another "Guy"--Guy Williams of "Zorro" and "Lost In Space"--has a minor role as Madison's underling. Handsomely produced and laced with well-directed action scenes.

      Description

The last bandit riders, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were America's most famous outlaws in 1900. Cassidy and his Wild Bunch robbed banks and trains along an outlaw trail from Wyoming to Colorado to Southern Utah. But with Pinkerton detectives pursuing, Butch and Sundance fled to South America. Trapped by Bolivian officers, they died in a bloody gunfight. Or did they? Was Butch reborn as William T. Phillips in Spokane 20 years later? Did the West's last badman escape the law in the end?

        Description

James Fenimore Cooper's exciting tale of the English Indian scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends during the French and Indian War is an enduring classic.

It is 1757, English Indian scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends meet up with a British officer escorting two sisters to their father, a commander of a frontier fort. Along the way, they face trouble when an enemy Indian tribe, the Hurons, capture the group of travelers. Attempts at rescue turn into battle when another tribe joins the Mohicans to save themselves from death at the hands of the renegades.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great DVD for those who want to reclaim their childhood!!.......2006-02-11

Finally after all these years one of my favorite cartoons from childhood goes digital!! Overall this is a really neat cartoon. I think it is one of the more realistic cartoon portrayals of Last of the Mohicans out there, but of course along with all the other cartoons that have been made there are a lot of differences to make it appropriate for children. I also like the animation that was used in the picture, because it is the typical 1970's Hanna Barabara animation of that era that we love so much.

The show starts off with Major Heyward who is escorting Cora and Alice Munro to their father in Fort William Henry. Along the way they meet Magua who claims to be a scout for the British. But instead of leading them to the fort he is actually leading them deeper into the forest away from the fort into a trap. They eventually meet up with Uncas, his father Chingachgook and a frontiersman named Hawkeye. Hawkeye recognizes Magua and says the coolest thing: "Magua!! I told you that if I ever saw your ugly face again...!" Magua glares at Hawkeye and runs into the forest as Uncas runs after renegade indian to see where his men are hiding. That night Chingachgook watches over Heyward and the women while Uncas and Hawkeye look for a safe way out of the forest. Chingachgook gives Alice a blue turtle necklace that was given to him when he was a young brave to comfort her and it ultimately saves her in the end. He will also later give his life to save the life of his son Uncas who was "the last of the Mohicans." In the end they make it to Fort Ticonderoga where Colonel Munro reunites with his daughters having never got his heart torn out and eaten by Magua. (remember this is a children's show)

This show has a lot of characterization in it as we learn that Cora and Major Heyward have a thing for eachother, Alice is poor mannered and has an annoying dog named Pip that gets them into trouble all the time and that Hawkeye's real name is "Natty Bumppo" (Nathaniel Poe in the 1992 movie) which Alice mistakes for the name of a mosquito bite. There are some cool actors in this including the voice talents of Casey Kasem as Uncas and Joan Van Ark as Cora. As far as I know there no special features on it, but no matter what I cant wait to get this! Koch Vision didn't do the best job remastering this cartoon, but at least they didn't do as bad of a job on it as they did The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I'm ecstatic about this considering that the VHS I have was taped by my dad over 20 years ago when I was a kid and now it is totally shot. All they have to do now is release Hanna Barbara's "Davy Crockett on the Mississippi" on dvd and I'll be a happy camper!! :-)
