Description
It is difficult to understand the reasons behind Reb Russell's decision to quit acting after his endearing performances in several low - budget westerns, the last among which was this thrilling cowboy mystery. Accused of murder, Peeler Benson returns to town to clear his family's name. Not surprisingly, Flash Purdue, the man who framed the Bensons turns out to be the villain.
While the plot remains predictable, as in all celluloid narratives from the 30s, Border Vengeance deviates from the beaten path half way through the plot to include some fascinating footage of a rodeo, which though inconsequential, offers a delightful peek at the charmed lives of rugged cowboys.
Russell's "next-door boy" looks and pretty Mary Carey's undeniable charm hold the narrative together while some great suspense-filled moments towards the end have you on the edge of your seats. When, the dust settles, "good guy "Peeler (Russell) emerges victorious, having won both, his battle of wits against the wily Purdue and the heart of the lady he adores, not to mention those of his admirers as well.
Experience this high-voltage western drama, which though conventional in parts, holds your undivided attention for the better part of an hour!
