Description
In 1898 the US government, led by Theodore Roosevelt (Tom Berenger) back when he was still a young, ambitious Naval Secretary, intervenes on the side of the Cuban rebels in their struggle against Spanish rule. Always ready for action, Roosevelt leaves the confines of the sidelines and forms a volunteer cavalry regiment which later became infamously known as the "Rough Riders." Roosevelt's regiment brings together volunteers from all corners of the nation to fight against a far superior adversary in one of the most rousing victories in American history.

TNT's Rough Riders Review.......2007-06-28
I rated the TV movie a "5" because it was entertainng although it contained a number of historical errors, but I understand how Hollywood wants to romance it up a bit. As a social studies teacher, this is an era that I teach my students when the United States became a world power. Good movie with alot of historical events that drew the U.S. into war with Spain.
One of the best Presidents of the United States of America.......2007-04-18
Rough Riders was a surprise. Did not know much about the life of President Theodore Roosevelt, and knew little if anything as to the events that lead Americans to fight for the independence of Cuba, during the Spanish-American War.
As a Cuban American, I loved watching this film, seeing the efforts of valiant men, willing to give up their lives in search for freedom for a country, just 90 miles away. At some point during the movie, there is a philosophical interchange amongst the characters, where they discuss the reasons that have compelled their actions. They say they are fighting to see fellow men free, but that some think it is all in search of the self interest of a nation that wants Cuba for its sugar. This presented the never ending argument of men sacrificing their lives for ideals, only to be ridiculed by envious people, not willing to sacrifice, and yet ready and willing to put down the efforts of others.
At any rate, it was awesome to know that Theodore Roosevelt was the inspiration behind the war that freed Cuba from the grasps of Spain, but it is with regret that we did not get the same support during the Bay of Pigs, and continue as a nation to be under the grasps of a tyrant, Fidel Castro Ruz.
The movie does a great job in highlighting the 1st US Volunteer Calvary Regiment as a group of heroic men consisting of rich and poor IVY league athletes and leather tough cow pokes, polo players and thieves coming together under the leadership of great men, one Theodore Roosevelt, to overcome and conquer the freedom and independence of Cuba against Spain.
Americans take much for granted when it comes to their heritage, but watching this film gave me the pride of knowing that when I chose to become an American Citizen, I was joining a nation of the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Thanks to this film I now know a bit more about one of the greatest presidents of the United States of America.
We need more movies about Teddy Roosevelt.......2007-03-29
I was really surprised at how good this film was. I was expecting the kinda so-so made for cable stuff that is watchable but not exceptional. This was a whole lot more.
Other people have written some great reviews here. I just want to underline one thing.
Tom Berringer's performance as Teddy Roosevelt was very good. At first I didnt even know it was him. Then when I knew it was him I still was like, I cant believe its Tom Berringer. He really nails the eccentric personality of Roosevelt, and he does it in a way that honors that great Presidents memory. I think this is one of the best performances of his career and when you think about who he was portraying and how great that man was, Berringer nailing it like that shows he was the right man for the job.
The whole cast does a great job, with standouts from Gary Busey, Sam Elliot, and even George Hamilton.
If you like historical films, you should like this one.
Teddy Roosevelt was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Its a shame so few people today have any clue about him.
History and Patroitism in Action Movie.......2007-03-12
Great action movie with many characters real historical figures. Viewers who love their country will feel a sense of pride and patroitism as they view this film. A footnote is that the firearms used in the movie are authenic to era and some to include the machine guns were probably actually used in the actual battle.
WARNING: This Magnificent Film is for Patriotic Americans ONLY! .......2007-03-03
During these most troubling times, when so much in our nation appears to be going so terribly wrong and we are infiltrated and surrounded by Fifth Column "special interest" groups, weak-minded/mealy-mouthed liberals, treason mongers, cowardly, gutless politicians, hoardes of illegal alien invaders, and engulfed by overwhelming mediocrity and the stifling, crippling effects of nation-killing political correctness, there are, every now and again, memorable venues that offer us a brief glimpse of just what this country USED to be made of. "Rough Riders" happens to be one such venue!!! Now, if you are a proud, true-blue, red-blooded, 100% American who loves this country, then this film is a MUST-OWN. If you DON'T fit into this category...well, I would say that you shouldn't waste your time and you can stop reading my review right now. You're certainly not gonna see lib-losers like Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover or Jane Fonda here...no way!
Not being much of a television watcher, I missed the original showing of "Rough Riders" (which aired on TNT way back in July of 1997), and it was only by chance that I happened upon the DVD early last summer while doing some shopping at a local store. Already being somewhat of an amatuer military historian and serious Theodore Roosevelt admirer from way back, I immediately bought the DVD, took it home and watched it that night and...WWWWWWWWOOOOOOWWWWWW!!! It had been some time since I had stood up and cheered while watching a movie, but I certainly did so that night! To say that "Rough Riders" was a hard-charging clean breath of fresh air and uplifting would be an major understatement! Amidst the endless sleeze, slime, filth, crud and garbage that oozes endlessly from out of the Hollyweird sewer these days, this glittering gem somehow managed to emerge, albeit, without much publicity (doesn't surprise me at all...given the bold, uncompromising, no-nonsense and entirely pro-conservative/pro-America message that this film broadcasts loud and clear).
Tom Berenger does an outstanding job by literally transforming himself into the one and only Theodore Roosevelt, and without a doubt, this stellar performance is probably the high-water mark of Mr. Berenger's entire career...at least for me it is! Tom brings Old Teethadore back to life in such a vibrant, energetic and larger-than-life (yet very human) performance that after just a few moments, one actually believes that it IS the real Theodore Roosevelt on that screen! Many kudos to Tom for getting this role so right. Of course, Mr. Berenger is surrounded and ably supported by a host of other highly skilled and talented actors, such as Gary Busey, Sam Elliot, the late Brian Keith and even Geoffrey Lewis shows up as well (it's been quite awhile since I'd seen him)! KFI radio talkshow host and military advisor, Capt. Dale Dye, USMC-Ret., is also featured and all put forth exemplary and commendable efforts in this made-for-TV production that really should have been a major theatrical release! A correspondingly heroic and memorable musical score by stalwart western/action-adventure composer, Elmer Bernstein, compliments the film perfectly (by sheer luck, I managed to acquire a copy of the soundtrack...now long out-of-print...from a friend of mine - thank you Mr. Ripley!).
Furthermore, I have already corresponded with Capt. Dye about his involvement in the making of "Rough Riders," thanking him for not only his excellent performance, but for his technical accuracy in getting so right the period uniforms, weaponry, etc. (yes, just as with any other movie production, there are a faux paus and technical discrepancies to be found in the historical timeline and in a few other areas, but set against the totally upbeat, powerful, forceful, feel-good-about-being-an-American projection of this total kick-butt winner, who the heck cares!), but I also wish to send my most heartfelt thanks to conservative director, John Milius, for not allowing the self-proclaimed socialist, Ted Turner, to step in and use his Left-wing influence to ruin this excellent and long untold story about these gutsy American heroes that, unfortunately, have been all but forgotten by so many today...TR and his heroic regiment of Rough Riders (or more correctly, the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry)!
THIS is film-making at its very best - the way films SHOULD be made and if he were still with us, I'm confident that the great John Wayne would have approved as well! Yep...you can forget all of that multi-culti and homosexual cowboy trash that the morally defunct libs try to push down our throats via the Academy Awards. I have watched "Rough Riders" at least eight times since buying it, and it has been a tremendous joy each and every time! Buy "Rough Riders" ASAP...trust me, you won't regret it!
Long live Col. Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders!!!

Despite a troubled production history including a switch in directors, budget overruns, and delayed release dates, The Alamo turned out to be a remarkably intelligent mini-epic of corrective historical biography. Dispensing with the grandiose myth-making of previous films on this subject (including John Wayne's gung-ho 1960 version), this well-written film breathes new, credibly dimensional life into the stodgy legends of Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), Jim Bowie (Jason Patric), and Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), who fought with 185 Anglo-"Texican" settlers (some historians claim their numbers were closer to 250) during the bloody 13-day siege by 5,000 Mexican soldiers at the titular San Antonio mission-turned-fortress in 1836. While Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) anguishes over military strategy and reluctantly withholds much-needed support, the Alamo defenders face the unbeatable multitudes commanded by Mexican Gen. Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarria), and the screenplay (on which John Sayles was an early contributor, when Ron Howard was slated to direct) allows the central heroes to reveal a richer, more substantial humanity beneath their mythic reputations. Tackling his biggest production to date, director John Lee Hancock (who previously worked with Quaid on The Rookie) reportedly shot 100 hours of footage, so it's almost miraculous that this 135-minute battle drama is so evenly balanced in telling its oft-told tale. Thornton was deservedly singled out for his fine performance, and Dean Semler's cinematography is Oscar-worthy throughout. Of course, any film about the Alamo necessarily includes speculative history, and this one's no exception, but it's got a ring of truth that previous versions conspicuously lacked. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the studio that brought you PEARL HARBOR ... Academy Award(R) winner Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE, Best Adapted Screenplay, 1996; BAD SANTA), Dennis Quaid (THE ROOKIE), and Jason Patric (RUSH) team up for the acclaimed action epic about one of the most important events in American history! It's the heroic tale of the 200 brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom defending a small Texas fort for 13 days against an entire army! Commanded by three men -- Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), James Bowie (Patric), and David Crockett (Thornton) -- their against-all-odds courage at the Alamo would forever live on as a rallying cry for liberty and independence!

Dennis!!!!!!.......2007-05-13
Anything Dennis Quaid will generally grab at least some of my attention. He is fun to look at and there were points in his career that totally plugged me in.
people have expectations.......2007-03-24
The actual events that led to the siege of the Alamo and the establishment of the short-lived country called Texas lie shrouded in the fog of contested legends. Like the Middle East today, two peoples necessarily tell the story of the same land in far different ways. It is often said by Texans today that Mexico is achieving through immigration and fecundity what Santa Ana could not.
Under such circumstances, there is room for a dramatic retelling of one side's story. THE ALAMO does that, and superbly. Jettisoning the attempt to see events from the Mexican point of view - it would have made for more textured history but a failed film - this movie simply tells the story of a heroic stand that many of its heros must have known was doomed from the start.
In the end, Mexican General Santa Ana's Napoleonic ambitions die in an eighteen-minute battle at a place of Sam Houston's choosing.
I work with leaders. Successful leaders usually have far more opportunity to draw on patience and fortitude than heroism. Yet in the heroism of this film *and* in Houston's patience, there are many lessons.
David (or was he Davey?) Crockett wearing his legend lightly. Houston refusing to be drawn in to battle when blood and anger were running hot. A young Lieutenant Coronel being told that 'sometimes it's just the *way* you say things' and discovering that stooping to burn his own hands on a hot cannon ball that someone else could have carried provided the elevation that had eluded him by command.
These are the film's enduring lessons. They can be told even when the history is sketchy, because somewhere, right now, some human being whose knees are shaking is becoming a hero in just this way.
A brilliant film, well shot, cunningly told, sincerely acted. Even Santa Ana would have admitted that much.
Spectacular.......2007-03-17
"The Alamo", I found, was a wonderful movie, even though it did have some historical errors. The acting was superb (to me Patrick Wilson stole the movie with his portrayal of William Barret Travis), and it kept me interested the whole time, so much so that after renting it, I bought a copy for myself from Amazon. Great movie!
Can there be any worse"Alamo"film than this one?.......2006-11-22
I doubt it...Even "The Last Command",a 1950s effort from Republic pictures, and starring Sterling Hayden(yes,Sterling Hayden, the corrupt police captain in the original"Godfather"film)is,overall, more entertaining than this revisionist twaddle..Hey!If you want"realism"(or political correctness)GO READ A BOOK !If you want history rather than entertainment, there's A&E,the History Channel and PBS...If you want a good story, robust performances, good music and award nominated film-making see the John Wyane version...
What is essentially wrong with this version is EVERYTHING...First of all it is revisionist political correctness taken to absurd lengths..Davey Crockett, played by Billy Bob Thornton(the only real reason to see this picture)is less than heroic but is portrayed instead as an opportunist ex-politician who has come to Texas thinking that the fighting is already over, and that he,as an ex-tennessee senator, might be able to renew his career in the new Texas republic..He is surprised that the fighting ISN'T over, and just the least bit annoyed that now he is in a position where his heroic manufactured image is in direct conflict with his real, opportunistic self..Jim Bowie is portrayed as a bigot, and Bill Travis is even more of an opportunist than ole Davey, and an adulterer to boot..Sam Houston ,likewise is not shown to be much more than an alcoholic who happens to be given command of an army that does nothing to help the defenders of the Alamo...
Claiming to give equal time to the other side in this conflict, the producers of this mess portray Santa Anna as a brutal tyrant, much like he has been portrayed in every previous"Alamo"film(indeed, the very BEST portrayal of the mexican general was by Raoul Julia in"13 DAYS TO GLORY",a made for teevee film, which was very well done, given the obvious budget restrictions..Julia's Santa Anna, while still a tyrant, was shown to be a much more complex individual than as portrayed in this film)...
Sure, the saga of the alamo,as history,is not written in strictly hero and villian terms, but the mission of our entertainment industry has been TO ENTERTAIN..teaching a strictly accurate rendering of any historical tale is not the same as providing entertainment,or,for that matter, providing charecters one can either root for or against..
This film wants to have it both ways...It wants to come across as a "great"american epic while at the same time attempting to straddle the fence of political correctness..Crockett,while certainly not the unabashed patriot of the John Wyane classic was also not the almost craven coward that one mexican after-battle account has him being...indeed,save for this one Mexican account, all other surviving firsthand accounts(most notably that of Mrs Dickinson)say that, like most of the other defenders,he fell in battle..This film ,determined to be in conflict with the facts, chose the account written by a mexican army officer(and which was as much a propaganda effort as any subsequent gringo account)to portray a crockett who surrendered and was executed by the victorious mexicans...
The final battle was, admittedly, fought just before dawn, but in terms of the cinema, such an epic scene filmed in near-total darkness(as it has been here)JUST DOES NOT WORK...a bunch of silhouetted figures running about, who are from time to time illuminated by weak light is not my idea of an exciting climax..add to this the god-awful dirge-like flapdoodle music, provided by Carter Burwell, and what you have is one really BAD scene, which is ironic, inasmuchas in every otheralamo film this last battle was the visual highlight...
The filmakers here extend thier storyline beyond the fall of the alamo(and the death of ALL of the main gringo players)and show us the Sam Houston victory over Santa Anna..But Randy Quaid's Houston is a marginal part of the movie, the battle scene is one-sided in the extreme, and the film ends, abruptly, with the defeat of the mexican army..Nothing heroic here either, with all of the mexicans appearing as cowards, and most of the americans looking like blood-thirsty louts...
This film is not entertainment..John Wyane's film is,even if it isn't historically accurate(and even if some of the dialouge is stilted)..What we have, instead,is revisionism that neither entertains nor informs..

John Wayne drew on what he learned from John Ford, Howard Hawks, and practically everyone who directed him during his long career when he made his own directorial debut on this labor of love. The Alamo is a sprawling, unabashedly patriotic epic of the sacrifice made by 187 men defending the Alamo from Santa Ana's bigger and better equipped army. Wayne stars as Col. Davy Crockett, the straight-talking, fun-loving frontiersman turned senator, with Laurence Harvey as the stiff, by-the-book Col. William Travis and Ricahrd Widmark as the legendary Jim Bowie who bristles under Travis's military protocol. The mix of regular army soldiers, Texican irregulars, scouts, and civilians makes for a volatile melting pot, but they all come together in a time of crisis in this metaphor for Wayne's heroic vision of America. Wayne spared no expense in this, one the last of the old fashion Westerns, re-creating the Alamo in exacting detail and corralling a cast of Western icons and old friends, including Richard Boone, Chill Wills (who earned an Oscar nomination), Hank Worden, Denver Pyle, Ken Curtis, and Olive Carey, in addition to teen heartthrob Frankie Avalon and Wayne's son Pat. Even old pal and spiritual godfather John Ford lent a hand shooting second-unit footage. Wayne is no Ford, but despite himself (and a talky script), he delivers an entertaining film full of intriguing characters and excellent action scenes, earning the film an Oscar nomination for Best Picture in 1960. Remember the Alamo! --Sean Axmaker

The Alamo John Wayne's view.......2007-06-27
This movie was a life long dream of John Wayn. He had wanted to make it for many years and finally in 1960 he was able to give the world his vision. It has great action sequences and the battles are among the best you can find. Detail in the costumes is great. It does have a large part of the movie being used as a platform for Mr. Wayne's political views but it is worth a watch.
It's another DVD con.......2007-04-18
Such a great movie completely ruined by Warner/MGM issuing a badly cut version of this classic film. Originally running at 196 minutes with Overture and Intermission plus 26 minutes of footage. This full version has already been issued on both VHS and Laserdisc so why do we have to put up with a cut version on DVD. The breaks in narrative ruin the continuity of the movie completely. Ever since this DVD was released I have been hoping for a "Director's Cut" but this does not appear to be in the forseeable future. The releas of the new version with Billy Bob Thornton would have been an ideal time for Warner to bring out THE ORIGINAL.
A LOOOONG labor of love.......2007-02-26
Hollywood history, but pretty accurate as far as the real events go. John Wayne directed and starred as Davy Crockett; Richard Widmark is Jim Bowie; and Laurence Harvey is the stiff-backed Col. Travis: their clash of personalities becomes the central theme of the movie. Wayne, as always, is just John Wayne. How the men end up at the Alamo in the first place is what the first half is all about: "freedom" has been challenged and a band of Tennessee ruffians comes to meet the challenge. The second half is all about the battle itself, and it's done up Hollywood style, no holds barred. The movie was a flop when it first came out; much has been written about why that was so but I imagine the biggest reason was that the movie was just too long, despite the crackling dialogue in places and the generally excellent acting by the principals. Quite a few academy award nominations went to the movie, mainly for technical things (cinematography, editing, sound, etc.). Not a movie that remains long in one's memory banks, it's still way better than the 2004 remake starring Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton.
The Epic Story of the Battle.......2007-01-11
You deserve a better introduction than what the film lacks. The Mexicans revolted against Spanish rule in 1821. The Monroe Doctrine, and the British Navy, kept Spain from reconquering Spanish America. The 1824 Mexican Constitution was similar to the US Constitution in its democracy and freedom. But the big landowners and bankers objected to democracy. They found an ambitious military man who would lead a coup to create a centralized dictatorship. After independence Mexico allowed immigrants from America to enter as long as they followed the rules. They were allowed the lands that were claimed by Indians like the Comanches. The Alamo was a mission compound miles outside of San Antonio de Behar. It served the Indians, and had adobe walls for protection against marauders.
The state of Zacatecas first stood up to Santa Anna's dictatorship. They were attacked, defeated, and their militia slaughtered. The "1824" on the Texican's tricolor meant they supported the 1824 Constitution for democracy and against the dictatorship. For the American settlers it was like another War of Independence. Most of the Americans were from the South, and brought their "peculiar institution" with them. The Mexican Constitution outlawed slavery. The film showed the Texicans complaining about the restrictions on trade; political oppression always results in impoverization of the people. [Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast" described life in California around that time.]
The conversation between Crockett and Bowie probably wasn't based on historical records. This is drama, not history. The attack on the Texans was started in the winter of February 1836; Santa Anna knew the value of a surprise attack. This caused many to flee towards the Louisiana border. The fortifications of the Alamo could not stand up against a regular army with cannon. Colonel Travis decided to hold the fort against superior forces. Colonel Bowie wanted to destroy the fort and attack Santa Anna's forces with guerrilla tactics. [This method has been proven correct from Concord and Lexington down to the present day. Davy Crockett knew that when a bear sought refuge in a cave it was doomed.]
A sortie at night destroyed a large enemy cannon. Colonel Travis explained his plan: the Alamo will hold off Santa Anna's army until General Sam Houston could raise a Texan army; they will buy time. The promised relief forces from Goliad never arrived. Another sortie captured cattle for fresh meat. When Santa Anna arrived he allowed the women and children to leave. Then the Mexican army began its assault; it failed. A rider reported that Colonel Fannin's men had been defeated; help would not arrive. The final assault began. The defenders of the Alamo were outnumbered and outgunned; their adobe walls were no match for cannon and a mass attack that overwhelmed the defenders. The survivors were executed, their bodies burned. The women and children were set free.
[This film would be better if it contained the rest of the story.] Santa Anna's army pursued the Texans; a victory seemed near. While camped at the San Jacinto river a surprise attack by the Texan army avenged the defeats at the Alamo and Goliad. Sam Houston extracted a Treaty of Independence from Santa Anna to establish the Republic of Texas. A decade later Texas joined the United States.
The 'Battle Cry' that broke Santa Anna's back!.......2006-12-17
John Wayne's directorial tribute to the struggle for "The Alamo" symbolized the spirit of resistance of a small group of determined fighters for Texan independence from Mexico...
Texans established a provisional government in 1835 and appointed Sam Houston (Richard Boone) commander in chief of their army... There followed a seesaw battle for control of San Antonio, including the ill-advised defense of the Alamo by a force of fewer than 200 Texas volunteers... General Antonio Lopez De Santa Anna was determined to take this key location in order to impress upon the Texans the futility of further resistance to Mexican ruler...
After a 13-day siege, every fighting man perished under the onslaught of 7,000 Mexican troops... Among the fallen defenders were Cols. William B. Travis, James Bowie and the legendary Davy Crockett... Only Mrs. Dickinson (Joan O'Brien), her little daughter and a black boy survive to provide the eyewitness story of the Siege and the Battle of the Alamo...
John Wayne portrays Davy Crockett, a frontiersman and politician, who saw the future of an independent Texas as his future and he loved a good fight... Crockett and his brave combatants - the Tennesseans, expert marksmen, held their position until death...
Richard Widmark is cast as Colonel Jim Bowie, a reckless adventurer, known for his famous 'Bowie knife'. Bowie has come to fight for Texas independence with a small force of volunteers. He had strong personal friction with Travis which threatens to develop into a private war... The difference in their personalities resulted in the two men sharing a somewhat antagonistic competition for command of the entire garrison... On one point they did agree: "The Alamo" is the most important stronghold of Texas...
Laurence Harvey plays Colonel Travis, "the grand Canyon of Texas," who arrives with 25 men to establish the first line of defense against Santa Anna... Travis is a disciplinarian officer who commanded the Texas defenders during the siege and battle of the Alamo, a genuine hero who anticipated a battle to the death, a polite gentleman who gave the men an opportunity to retreat with honor the ill-fated garrison but explained how important their defense of the Alamo is... His appeal from the Alamo of reinforcements becomes an American symbol of unyielding courage, heroism and self-sacrifice... Travis high moment in the film was when he fired his answer to Santa Anna with a cannon blast: Victory or Death!
With its seven Oscar nominations, including the Oscar-nominated hit song "The Green Leaves of Summer" and a superb score written by Dmitri Tiomkin and song-writer Paul Webster, and featuring some of the most spectacular battle sequences ever seen, "The Alamo," - a sacrifice on the altar of liberty - becomes the 'Battle Cry' that broke Santa Anna's back...

Best-selling novelist Michael Crichton had already directed Westworld and Coma when he tackled the ambitious production of The Great Train Robbery in 1978. Adapting his own novel (which was inspired by the facts of the first known train robbery), Crichton sets this attractive, highly enjoyable film in London in 1855, where Edward Pierce (Sean Connery) and Agar (Donald Sutherland) plot to steal £25,000 in gold that is being transported by train to pay British troops in the Crimean War. Lesley-Anne Down plays Miriam, Pierce's sophisticated paramour and the third partner in the scheme; while Pierce and Agar make copies of four keys for the train's closely guarded safes, she uses her feminine wiles to distract a variety of officials and businessmen with connections to the gold.
A lively, humorous caper film of the first order, The Great Train Robbery also boasts a vividly authentic recreation of mid-Victorian England, all the more remarkable since the production was filmed primarily in Ireland on a budget of $6 million--a miraculously modest sum (even in 1978) for such a lavish-looking film. Although Crichton's directorial style seems somewhat detached and bloodless, he maintains a vivid respect for place and time, and his three leads are splendid in their charismatic roles. Meticulous attention to details of costuming and production design enhance the breezy fun of the heist, which climaxes with an exciting sequence on the rushing train, with Connery performing his own stunt work. While the later hit Mission: Impossible would take a similar sequence to its high-tech, high-velocity extreme, The Great Train Robbbery remains an entertaining study of crime in a less hectic age, allowing Crichton to emphasize ingenuity over special effects. --Jeff Shannon
Description
All aboard for runaway action and suspense in this riveting masterpiece from writer/director Michael Crichton! Starring Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Lesley Anne-Down, it's a "spine-tingling and suavely performed" adventure (The Hollywood Reporter) based on history's first train robbery. Filmed by Academy AwardÂ(r)-winning* cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth, this "ingenious" (Variety) and "wonderful" (Gene Shalit) crime caper delivers mile-a-minute thrills and breathtaking excitement. Connery is Edward Pierce, a master thief who conceives a brilliant plan to steal a fortune in gold bars from a railroad payroll car. But to pull off the most daring heist in history, Pierce must join forces with a safecracker (Sutherland) and his own beautiful girlfriend (Down) in a series of intricately plotted thefts that will test all of their nerve, camaraderie and larcenous skill. *1972: Cabaret; 1980: Tess
Customer Reviews:
Almost as good as the book!.......2007-04-30
I read Michael Crichton's book a few years ago, and I loved it, but I did not see the movie version until recently. Then I read Crichton's book "Travels," which has a chapter on the filming of the movie, which he directed. With my interest now piqued, I got the movie CD and enjoyed it very much, especially after reading Crichton's account of the problems during filming. Filmed in 1978, this is Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland at their finest, playing two Victorian scalawags trying to pull off the biggest heist in British history. To say any more about the outcome would be a spoiler, but the movie is almost two hours of nonstop intrigue and tension as the two crooks try to figure how to steal the unstealable.
With Crichton writing the screenplay and directing, the movie was pretty faithful to the book, although if you want all the little details, read the book also. This was based on an actual event, but I don't know how faithful Crichton's story is to the real event. In any case, the movie does a great job of recreating mid-nineteenth century London and the sights and sounds of the period, even to the old steam locomotive used.
Except for one brief, harmless scene in a London bordello, this is a great family movie.
Highly recommended for two hours of entertainment!
On track.......2007-01-16
With great actors and a great plot this movie is a real charmer.
After reading the book I was pleased to see that the movie actually
follows the book much better than many others I have seen. There is
a bit of uneveness in the movie but it is still a great watch.
Crichton's period heist film is quite exciting..........2006-12-31
'The First Great Train Robbery' is about a quite impossible mission in Victorian underworld... It is about gold bars placed in strongboxes and taken by armed security guards to the railway station...
'The First Great Train Robbery' is about four keys separately kept and guarded by different parties... and a daring gentleman thief who never tells the truth...
'The First Great Train Robbery' is about a bunch of crooks that can steal your heart... and is about a young stunning mistress who suspects that her father breaks his own regulation for each morning of the shipments...
'The First Great Train Robbery' is about the fastest pickpocket you'll ever see...
The film chronicles the grandeur and hypocrisy at all levels of England during the Victorian Era, and proves that the cleverness and prowess of a criminal mastermind is elevated to heroic status...
With excellent photography of Ireland beautiful countryside, and great music score by Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Crichton's period heist film is quite exciting... The movie gave American's audience a pleasure to escape from the outcome of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal...
Good book...bad movie.......2006-03-24
I LOVED the book and made the mistake of buying the movie without watching it first. This movie is boring and did no justice to the book.
Wonderful mixture of comedy, suspense, and drama.......2006-03-17
This movie is taken from a book by Michael Crichton. I love that author, but have never been able to read the book. So, I ordered the movie! It's great! The comment is made that this is the story of the first train robbery ever - like EVER - in history.
Each character is unique. There is subterfuge here too.
The ending is just wonderful! Sure to satisfy everybody.

Made in the heady days of movies like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit, when CB radios were expected to create the kind of communication network the Internet has provided, Breaker! Breaker! tells the tale of J.D. Dawes (Chuck Norris of Good Guys Wear Black and TV's Walker, Texas Ranger), a trucker in tight jeans and a blonde shag. While J.D. is defending his arm-wrestling reputation in a truck stop poolroom, his younger brother Billy is being taken advantage of by the crooked cops of Texas City, California, a former ghost town turned would-be tourist trap, run by a corrupt judge named Joshua Trimmings. When the scam gets out of hand, Billy disappears--and J.D. comes to town to find him. There are many campy things to appreciate about Breaker! Breaker! (the sequined collar of the shirt Norris wears during a meditation teaching, or the glorious air-brushed eagle on Norris's van), and by contemporary Jackie Chan/The Matrix standards the fighting is slow and unspectacular--but ironically, this actually gives the action some grit and makes the blows feel more visceral than the wild flips and kicks of more recent movies. The chase scenes have surprising momentum, and there's some fine scenery-chewing by George Murdock as the wicked judge. And for a curious bit of trivia, Jack Nance--who must have been playing the lead in David Lynch's Eraserhead concurrent with Breaker! Breaker!--plays a trucker friend of Norris's. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Chuck Norris ("Walker, Texas Ranger") puts the pedal to the metal in this hard-driving action/adventure exploding with heart-pounding chases and slam-bang martial arts battles. As powerful as an 18-wheeler and as fast-moving as a lethal karate chop, Breaker! Breaker! pushes the throttle wideopen for nonstop excitement. When trucker Billy Dawes (Michael Augenstein) vanishes duringhis first solo run, his older brother, J.D. (Norris), sets out in search of answers. What J.D. finds, however, is a deadly conspiracy involving a corrupt small-town judge (George Murdock) and a ring of thieves who prey upon unsuspecting motorists. With help from a beautiful local woman (Terry O'Connor), J.D. searches for his brother and battles the criminals with his amazing karate skills, fighting all the way to an explosive final showdown that may just destroy the entire town!

Not Bad, But Not Good Either.......2007-02-24
This picture was made back in 1977 and I don't remember where I saw it at. This was a very young and very blonde Chuck Norris who played the role of John David Dawes. Also George Murdock plays the role of Judge Trimmings and terry O'Conner plays the role of Arlene. When John returns home he goes to see his brother who's riding a dirt bike. John brother Billy wants to drive a big rig and take a load of something somewhere. So John agrees to let Billy take a load gets to a small town in Texas. Billy gets into trouble with a Joshua Trimmings who's a crooked Judge that runs the small town. When John fines out that Billy never made it, he heads towards Texas to fine him. Breaker, Breaker, wasn't the best movie but it wasn't that bad. I give this movie 7 weasel stars basically for its action.
A Dated, But Okay Effort For Norris' First Starring Role.......2007-01-11
During the CB (Citizen Band) radio craze of the 70's, Chuck Norris began his very successful leading man career by appearing in this film.
Norris plays a trucker whose brother gets caught up in a speed-trap town whose leaders don't mind killing to maintain control. Of course, truckers unite by using the CB radios, Norris kicks lots of butt, and a good reckneck time is had by all.
The CB focus, fashions and trends are very dated, and the movie isn't good enough to overcome these limitations. But it works as a cheap action flick and curio timepiece. Breaker, Breaker is far from Norris' best, but he has also done much, much worse.
Good for a Laugh.......2006-02-13
Chuck Norris's brother is hauling freight through a small Texas Town when the local sherif arrests him on a trumped up charge. The town confiscates the load, kidnaps his brother, and puts him in jail.
This causes chuck to go into the town and start opening a king sized can of whoop but. Bad acting, good fight seens, and a poor story line all combine for a pretty good movie. I'd buy this movie just to laugh at the out of date 1960-1970 fasions.
Rich
they don't make B-movie action films like this any more.......2005-03-07
and it's a shame, these days most direct to video b-movies are not all that great, but back then, they were fun, sure the acting and story are not the best, but it's fun, and really that's what you come for right? fun, good action with some funny scenes in there.
the action may not seem like much next to the jackie chan movies or the post-matrix world and that's a shame, Chucks action always seemed more real, down and dirty, his hits meant something, when he does his big kicks, you know that hurt.
the movie held up better than i thought it would, i saw it again for the first time in years just minutes ago, it has some 70's styles and look, but really it's more of a timeless western feel they have going on, chuck is the stanger coem to clean up "texas city" and save his brother, he faces down the locals, has a great fight or 20, gets the girl and walks off into the sunset.
Semi-Trucks, CB Radios, Frozen TV Dinners and Chuck Norris!!.......2005-02-02
This short (65 minutes) movie features Chuck Norris as a truck drivin' guy who just happens to be an expert in karate. Chuck is J.D. Dawes, a good name for a trucker if there ever was one, and he comes home to find his kid brother riding dirt bikes in the obligatory two-brothers-bonding scene. Well, before you know it, little brother is off on a haul, alone of course, gonna pick up some frozen TV dinners for delivery. Gee, I hope something doesn't happen to him along the way.
Meanwhile a group of ne'er-do-wells, led by corrupt judge Trimmings (George Murdock, actually pretty good to watch) have founded Texas City, California. Among Texas City's many fine civic industries are crooked cops, a corrupt judicial system, kidnapping, moonshine and selling pilfered automobiles for scrap metal. At the town meetings, they give reports on all the fine progress their new little town is making. All is well until they kidnap Chuck Norris' little brother using false charges. I reckon they're gonna get their tails whipped.
(Apparently the residents of Texas City had never seen a Chuck Norris film - too bad for them, eh? They messed with the wrong guy's little brother driving a semi-truck of frozen TV dinners).
The acting runs from decent to horrible, depending upon where you are in the film. The cinematography is OK, especially for a low-budget film like this one. In one scene, Chuck pulls up in the semi-truck with the set lights brightly reflecting off the grill/front of the truck. As he moves out of frame, you can actually see them dim the set lights, fading on the truck. Then, there's a bit of high school acting from a "concerned" lady who speaks with Chuck. Aye carumba.
John Di Fusco as Arney does a decent job as the slow-witted, Gomer-Pyle-lookin' brother of the owner of the auto repair station in Texas City. He becomes a pivotal character because of his good heart. Miranda Garrison is pretty good as the barmaid-floozy, whom the judge hangs out with when he's not busy stealing other people's money. She's kinda got a weirdo-nutty thing going on with her doll collection though. Unfortunately, some of the other extras must have taken some acting lessons from the dolls. Oh and there's a couple of guys who shoot at approaching cars just to keep 'em out. Real nice town, that Texas City, eh?. I'm surprised there wasn't a banjo and a guitar faintly dueling somewhere in the distance.
Like all good stories, what goes around comes around. The calvary is a little bit different this time, but effective nonetheless. And there's a little slow-mo fighting with martial arts (bet that caught ya by surprise) where the director uses a bit of artistic license. If you're a Chuck Norris fan, you'll probably find enough about this film to like and it's PG-13 for language. Other decent Chuck Norris films are "Good Guys Wear Black" and "The Hero and the Terror" and "Code of Silence" is pretty good, though being about Chicago mobsters makes it pretty rough in some spots.
And it must be said, the CB radio craze was in full swing when this movie was produced. Surprisingly, it's not overdone in this film. Bit of trivia: The art direction for "Breaker, Breaker" was done by Thomas Thomas (who also designed the van Chuck drives with a huge eagle on it). I just wondered if he was the guy who came up with the name for the movie.
Well, y'all have yourself an outstanding day, keep the greasy side down, watch out for them four-wheelers and Smokey Bear. We gone, bye-bye!

i don't know about sitting,but this is bull !.......2006-06-15
amazing how a movie about sitting bull can have a white man as the star and the title man is really just a costar! as history this worthless and as adventure it does a little better, but not much!
the print here is very bad, with sound drops and some scenes are so washed out as to be unwatchable! i know you sould not expect a great copy at such a cheep price, but you should be able to watch it!!!!! skip it!
interesting.......2006-01-22
Just watched this on TCM. It is amazing that somebody made a movie where President Grant and Sitting Bull were going to sit down together between the two armies and discuss peace, but that Custer screwed the whole thing up on purpose by disobeying orders and attacking the indians while Grant was waiting to be taken to the meeting place. It is certainly sympathetic to the indians, and a bit ahead of its time in 1954 in this respect. Sitting Bull chides one of his braves not to scalp Custer because we do not scalp brave men who died in battle. I recommend that you watch "Little Big Man".
historical and entertaining.......2002-05-13
This was probably one of the better videos recounting the battle
of the little big horn. Only the men involved in this historical
event know for sure what happened, but this seems as close as
any video I've seen, compared to what has been written. Dale Robertson did a magnificent job in his role as the major who
tries to find justice for the indians. I haven't seen Robertson in many romantic roles such as this. Mary Murphy becomes Mrs. Robertson in real life for a short short time in 1956. I would recommend this video if you like westerns.

A Great Family Movie.......2007-02-14
Another great family film and it was the first of four starring Robert Logan who in this film plays the role of Gambler Zachariah Coop, Heather Rattray plays the role of Holly Smith and Mark Edward Hall plays the role of Jason Smith. Coop who's on horse back is running from 6 men who are looking to skin him alive. After Coop loose, his horse he runs into Holly and Jason Smith who's on their way to Oregon. Coop tries to hook up with the kids but they don't trust him. Therefore, Across the Great Divide the kids go with Mr. Coop following them. The Kids deal with many hazards while on their way and the only question that remains, do they make and is Mr. Coop with them. The movie it's self I would give a six however, when you add in the country and its beauty through out the movie then this movie jumps to a 9. This was the first of three films that Heather Rattray did with Robert Logan and Rattray when on years later to play Victoria Newman on the Young and The Restless Soap Opera.
I remember this one, too........2006-11-28
And I have very fond memories of it. Good clean family fun; if that still has any validity these days anymore.
Oh, and Movie Gal, it was released in 1976.
What a blast from the past!.......2004-10-08
This movie was a childhood staple for me. I can recall countless times I watched this movie with my grandparents - so I do consider myself a very reliable source for a review.
It's a great movie for these reasons: it's an adventure that will keep your interest, it's witty enough to cause a chuckle or two and there is nothing remotely "adult" about it (other than a running theme of an alcoholic gambler). It's also very obvious that the movie was made in the 80's on a small, small budget, so don't expect the almost flawless effects you see in kids movies today. Also, the story is set in America's Frontier Era, so be prepared for some not-so-understanding viewpoints from the characters concerning Native Americans and animal hunting (think "Little House on the Prairie" without all the sticky-sweet endings and less crying from Pa).
Here's the story: An alcoholic, drifting gambler comes across two orphaned kids and their dog trying to travel across Oregon. Thinking he can con them into giving him some food and shelter from all the people who are after him, he takes up with the kids on their journey and the rest of the movie is devoted to their adventures along the way to their destination (and maybe, just maybe, the drifter comes to form a bond with the orphans...maybe).

My husband and I talk often about the old western shows we watched when we were kids. It was real good to watch this CD. We received it on time and the the CD is clear and easy to watch.
Great Western TV Shows Review.......2006-08-06
I understand that these are very old shows and, no doubt, were not preserved well, but I think that this should be pointed out in your advertising. It is disappointing when you expect the same quality that you remember and the picture is distorted, faded (almost bleached) and has poor sound. If this is acknowledged first, it would minimize the quality expectations. Old fans would still purchase the product.

Wow...Excellent Quality and content.. I truely enjoyed this. I one have given it a 5 star rating if it had included, Lawman, Yancy Deringer, Colt 45 or Wanted Dead or Alive...
It did however include Sugarfoot, Jim Bowie, Kit Carson and Annie Oakley which I haven't seen in years.. Secondly how can you beat good old black & white television. If you were born circa 1953 as I was this is a "MUST"... I showed this to my father who was born in 1924 and I have never seen him happier...
some great western shows from yesteryear, bcieclipise does it again.......2006-04-20
if you have read any of my reviews you know i love westerns, and you should know that i really like this great collection of some of t.v. early westerns.
bcieclipise is a company that i have come to like very much. they started this trend of putting movies and shows into a 5 or 10 disc set. most of their sets are very good and have nice if not great transfers.
this set of old t.v. westerns is a fine cross section of some old westerns, some i had never heard of, but all of them are pretty good. i don't have a break down of all the shows for you but if you like westerns like me i think this is one collection you may want to have.they are all kid friendly and my boys watch these old shows with me and we have a ball. that alone puts this set high on my list of dvd's to have.
Memories.......2006-03-09
I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the TV westerns I remember growing up in the 50's and 60's. The quality was excellent. Great job!
Thanks, Bill Clifford

The Terror of Tiny Town.......2007-01-30
One of the best western B movies. If you like a tiny western. If you havent seen this move it is a must. Great great movie.
The terrible and the good.......2005-07-12
* - WACKIEST WAGON TRAIN IN THE WEST (1976)
A three episode compilation movie of something called `Dusty's Trail', a Bob Denver television series that ran for one season, 1973. Co-created by `Gilligan's Island' creator Sherwood Schwartz it's pretty much `Gilligan's Island' on the range. Dusty is a bumbling yet lovable scout, Mr. Callahan (Forrest Tucker) is the burly yet lovable wagon master. Along for the ride is a millionaire and his wife, a sweet brunette, a saucy dance hall girl, and a know-it-all regular guy. Boy, there's an original combination! No story line in this one, just repeated excuses for one lame brained slapstick routine after the other. If watching Dusty get pulled off a buckboard because he forgot to latch the seat, or try and fail to get on a horse, or get chased by a man in a bear suit strikes you as funny then look no farther. From someone who never got the appeal of `Gilligan's Island' I thought this one was just dreadful
* - FAIR PLAY (1972)
Yet another dreadful made-for-tv movie. FAIR PLAY was directed by James A. Sullivan, who directed one other movie - `Night Fright', a low-rated John Agar vehicle from 1967 - and was editor on what some consider the worst movie ever made, `Manos the Hands of Fate.' FAIR PLAY stars veteran character actor Paul Ford as the hotel owning western uncle of a visiting eastern greenhorn. The plot, as far as I could tell, had something to do with a store owner trying to brew trouble between Ford and a local mine owner. Extremely un-funny and close to unwatchable. Filled with tired, cliché ridden characters. Paul Ford was a good character actor with a solid résumé - whatever induced him to star in this turkey is beyond me. An embarrassment that gets one-star only because this site doesn't allow me to give it any fewer.
**** - TERROR OF TINY TOWN (1938)
One of the strangest exploitation films ever made. Directed by Sam Newfield, a prolific (272 career movies directed), anonymous and undistinguished Hollywood veteran who'd already directed about 120 movies when he helmed this one. Odd, too, that it was distributed by Columbia Pictures. Of course, the gag is that the movie features an all-midget cast. The plot would have been very familiar to a 30's audience - the bad guy is rustling cattle simultaneously from two feuding families, causing the firebrands in the feuding families to wrongly suspect the other family which, the bad guy hopes, will lead to an open range war. In other words a familiar b-western plot, the kind of movie Newfield was then churning out with numbing regularity. Billy Curtis as `The Hero' and Little Billy Rhodes as `The Villain' are pretty credible. Curtis even gets a chance to unsling his guitar and serenade `The Girl' (Yvonne Moray) in the grand tradition of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. TERROR OF TINY TOWN does use the cast's short stature for comic effect now and then - it takes two cowboys to play an upright bass, a bartender empties a glass of beer in one take, and half the crew can walk under the swinging doors of the bar without ducking - but with no large person in the cast I found the novelty of an all-midget cast wear off some and the acting and action take over. Believe it or not Billy Curtis makes a pretty convincing singing cowboy hero. Minus the novelty TERROR OF TINY TOWN was a decent enough b-western. I liked it quite a bit more than I thought I would.
I bought this dvd because, at the time, it was the only way to get TERROR OF TINY TOWN, a movie I'd been looking for for a while. I liked TERROR, but WACKIEST WAGON TRAIN and FAIR PLAY were terrible movies, time wasters of the worst sort. The two-stars I give this disk is simple addition (* + * + ****) and division by three.
