Along with Sergio Leone's Clint Eastwood trilogy, Sergio Corbucci's Django, starring Belgian hunk Franco Nero as the gritty mercenary who drags a coffin behind him, was one of the most influential spaghetti Westerns. After mowing down armies of bad guys with his machine gun (which he brandishes in classic two-fisted tough-guy fashion--from the hip), he stages a daring gold heist from a Mexican military fortress and then plots to double-cross his bandito partners. Corbucci, who cowrote the story, fashions an unrelentingly violent tale of rival gangs squeezing the life out of a muddy, bloody border town, reveling in the sadism of the genre. The film opens with a woman strung up and lashed by a group of lascivious bandits, only to be saved by even more sadistic gunmen who plan to burn her alive, and Django fan Quentin Tarantino borrowed the scene where a vindictive general slices the ear off a corrupt preacher for Reservoir Dogs. While not as stylish as Leone's operatic epics, Django pushed the borders of violence into all-new territory, and the film was banned outright in England and cut in the U.S. It spawned 20 unofficial sequels before Nero returned 20 years later for the only legitimate sequel, Django Strikes Again. Django is a fantastic film. It's one of the best Spaghetti Westerns out there. The Anchor Bay edition which is out of print is ok as far as the picture goes but the sad thing is the only language track is the dubbed English which is more funny than anything. You need the Blue Underground edition. The picture is fantastic except for a few blemishes. It also has the Italian audio track which to me makes for a far better film. Django is surreal which makes for a good time with the DVD player. Highly recommended.

Only Italians know how to make a western. This is not some Johnny Wayne crap American movie,this movie is even better then the Good,the Bad, and the Ugly Jew, with Clint Westwood :)) Do not listen to the reviews made by some American film buffs or whatever they call themselves, see this movie for yourself. Anyway only a European could appreciate a movie like Dijango!

Django is one of the greatest of spaghetti westerns and proof that not only Sergio Leone could make them. The film has a very flimsy plot, but if that's what you're after then a spaghetti western isn't what you should be looking for. It does however excel in most other ways, the editing, photography, way over the top style and even the performances are decent. Franco Nero's tough-and-silent-type charisma has rarely been as effective. This may be the least political of Sergio Corbucci's spaghetti westerns and that is in some ways good and some ways bad (ie making it perhaps more accessible to a mainstream audience, but perhaps making it slightly more shallow at the same time).

Blue underground's dvd is excellent. The transfer is great and you rarely see a 1.66 AR film with a proper anamorphic release but this has it down perfectly. It also has the Italian soundtrack, which is a big plus as the dialogue (what little there is of it) is marginally better than the English. Other extras are fine all round. Word of warning though, the extra disc is a mini-dvd and contains a brilliant short with Franco Nero.

Highly recommended for (spaghetti) western fans especially, but also for anyone with an interest in the World Cinema explosion of the 60's and cult films. Beware of the unbelievably many films called Django something-or-other, there's only one...actually, I also recommend the very different and unrelated Django Kill! also available from Blue Underground.

Once again we have a stranger with a score to settle. Of course, he is lightning fast with guns and never misses. Before it's all over ( I couldn't bear to watch it all) he's wasted scores of Mexicans and Americans both. Why exactly I'm not sure. The story takes a back seat to all the cruel, unusual and gratuitous violence. I don't mind violent movies but I'd at least like to have an interesting story to go with them. I kept trying to like this show. After reading reviews what I imagined sure had the real thing beat. I mean c'mon, a guy who drags a coffin around through the desert to some God forsaken mud hole of a town, just to waste about 300 or 400 guys who go up against him? Why it all matters I don't know. There were so many people getting shot that it was hard to remember what the story was about but it really wasn't worth remembering anyway.

I had vaguely heard of this movie. I am a big fan of the Sergio Leone spagetti westerns but have seen very few other westerns of that genre. I also like Franco Nero after being exposed to him the first time in the movie The Salamander. I was looking up some info on Franco and I came across some info on his movies and read about Django. Many said that it was equal to the Leone westerns and that it was darker and more brutal. After watching it, and enjoying Django, I must say that I don't think that it is on par with any of the Leone westerns. That is not to say that it is not good though. When you consider that most of the time they didn't even have a script and that they improvised the script most of the time, it is a pretty entertaining movie. The cast of characters is really good and like Leone the faces that he comes up with to play the parts are all interesting. It is a down and dirty western with lots of mud, dirt, and plenty of really over the top violence including an ear scene that inspired Quenting Tarrentino to film his scene in Resevoir Dogs. The gun play is also cool and Django himself is one cool dude.

This movie of course is dumbed in English. Unlike the Leone westerns I don't think there are any English speaking actors. Nero is dubbed and the guy has the typical hero voice but it is ok (not great and if it was redone I would love to have somebody else dubbed in or Nero himself). I also liked the little documentary interview they did with Franco as well as the trailers they showed.

Again, it's a fun movie and Django and his coffin are dynamite in action!

Now this box set will give you everything you will need to know about the legendary 2pac Shakur.It comes with 2 dvds witch the first one is called "life of an outlaw" witch chronicles Tupacs life witch has interviews with his stepfather and the people he has worked with in the music industry. This also comes with a book called "Holler If You Hear Me" written my Michael Dyson, he goes in the search for 2pac interviewing people he worked with. There is a soundtrack witch is mostly made up of the outlawz and his close friends. So if you want to learn more about Tupac Amaru Shakur then get this one, R.I.P Tupac Amaru Shakur.

Wow what can I say. . . This movie is like the best documentary besides resserection, because it explains so much, from what he says about the cops and his child hood. . And every peace of information helps you. . To get into tupacs mind and what he thought about the world,rap music exc. . .so if u like Tupac then get this movie because you will be very Happy :)

The documentary "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" takes a deconstructionist approach to analyzing the Rap superstar. Was Tupac a thug whose life ended in an uncanny replication of his lyrics, or was Tupac Shakur, a revolutionary with anarchistic beliefs? With these two diametrically opposed images, the filmmaker deconstructs Tupac's life while exploring both possibilities. As a result, this thought-provoking documentary offers a great deal of insight into a life that so often hit the front page.

Tupac, named after a Bolivian revolutionary, was born into a troubled family--his mother was a Black Panther, and other relatives served jail time. One relative even received political asylum from Cuba. By the time Tupac was a teenager, he was no stranger to poverty, and frequent moves across country finally left him living in Marin County. The film includes an interview with a 17-year old Tupac, and it's clear from the statements he makes that he's intelligent, idealistic, respectful towards women and very socially conscious. It is difficult to align these early statements of Tupac with some of the film's later interviews. Within a few years, now famous, Tupac's world view is much harder. There's one scene of him toting a weapon in a shooting range, and one senses he is preparing for the big showdown he is sure is in his future. It is at this point that Tupac makes several anarchistic statements: "The police ain't nothing but a gang. The National Guard ain't nothing but a gang. The army ain't nothing but a gang." But it's also quite clear from the documentary's investigation of Tupac's past why he felt this way. Tupac noted that even Dan Quayle took the time at the Republican Convention to lob a verbal attack against the rapper, and as his acquaintances realised, Tupac interpreted this attention to be devastatingly significant.

The documentary includes many interviews with those who knew Tupac best--relatives, former manager Leila Steinberg, Quincy Jones, and fellow rappers. The film touches on Tupac's Death Row Records contract, and the feud with Biggie. He is described by those who loved him as "the hardest working man in hip hop." "Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel" is a fascinating account of the rapper's brief and brilliant life, and as an attempt to unravel the mystery of Tupac's two sides, I think the film succeeds quite well. As to say this, I can't get my eyes on Tupac. 'Cuz he had a lot going on in his life, you know what I'm mean. You see Tupac will be telling a lot of stories of his past when he begin writing poetry at a early age, learn to act, and how to be a superstar in the rap business. Yeah Tupac been gone for 7 or 8 years now, but in 10 years he'll be remember 'cuz he modered a generation for the hip-hop community. I also a lot of people from that culture to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, RFK, and on and on.

Now a lot of people are still talking about him and how he became a part of our culture. That's why he lived his life the way he live b/c of the fight with Biggie, the East Coast/West Coast rap war, how he got arrested, been in jail all of his life, need I say more?

Nobody even care on how he lived or how he died. He help changed that by putting it into his lyrics. The reason why I love him the most is there's nobody like him like Jada Pinkett Smith "There's nobody, nobody like that man. I don't care how many records you sell. I don't care how popular you are..."
You know Tupac lives on and he'll always will be to the fullest.

For those of ya'll are missing out a lot of good information about this icon, I urge you to check him out. He's one of the greats that put it on since Martin Luther King and Malcolm X we learned back in the day.

        The GENEON DVD is the one you want...a beautiful widescreen print of an often put-down Spaghetti Western. Along with CAPTAIN APACHE, A TOWN CALLED HELL [...],BAD MAN'S RIVER & SAMURAI (THE WHITE,THE YELLOW & THE BLACK)this is one of the most shunned of the genre.Am I the only person who likes these movies??? Each one is a STRANGE/UNIQUE look at American/standard Westerns, deserving of critical attention...Yeah,OK...It's not Sergio Leone, and it's not even Giuseppe Colizzi or Sergio Corbucci...but this is a well-directed (Eugenio Martin of BAD MAN'S RIVER),well-produced non-historical account of Villa's slam-bang Spaghetti Western raid on Columbus,N.M...Relax & enjoy...the camera work is great, the acting top-notch(Chuck Conners is a standout!!!)and the overall production values are better than most...so buy this at such a bargain price, buy a six-pack of your favorite Mexican beer, open the taco chips & join Pancho's bandidos/soldiers in their quest for Spaghetti Western political un-correctness...VAMOS A MATAR COMPANEROS!!!!!

        Mario is a cop who is looking for some drug money. It was a waste of time for me to watch this. IMHO it was just poorly put together.

        Gunmen is one of my favorite action movies, it's got great scenery, action galore, a fast pace, and great performances, especially from Denis Leary, who steals the show as villain Armor. However this DVD really hurts the film. It's presented in pan-and-scan with poor quality and so-so sound, and has no extras. Artisan ruined another great movie called Joshua Tree (or Army Of One, as the DVD cover for that movie incorrectly states) with the DVD, which featured a similar DVD transfer (very poor). I'd wait for a re-release with a better transfer and sound and with the film in it's OAR plus with some extras, like a commentary and making-of featurette...

        It is a shame Gunmen didn't get fair treatment when it was brought to DVD. Originally shot in 2.35:1 widescreen, the DVD and obviously, the video are only available in 1.33:1 full TV screen format. Almost half the picture is missing, and it shows. Even ignoring the lush scenery cut off, too often the characters' faces are missing from the frame. Even worse is that the DVD transfer is rotten. It may have been from a S-VHS master from what it looks like. It is full of film grain which compresses awfully on DVDs, making the entire movie look muddy.

        This is a terrible shame because Gunmen is a fun, lightweight flick of two guys, one good, the other bad, forced to work together against a common enemy. There are many funny one liners, and the action scenes are pretty good, though low budget. Denis Leary is always fun to watch when he's angry or evil, and he's almost always both in Gunmen.

        Real nice B-grader, Lambert has a real flair for the comedy, if only the people behind the camera could make up their mind whether it's a action comedy, or action thriller.
        Because it's certainly not the latter, but the laughs dry up a bit after the hilarious first half hour.
        Leary always entertains as the bad guy as well.

        This film was shot full anamorphic 2.35:1 Panavision and is full of gorgeous and pretty scenery. But just like they did with another Christopher Lambert film, Fortress and the Dolph Lundgren movie Joshua Tree they have released this in mutilated pan and scan format with about half the picture missing.

        Gunmen is a lively and entertaining movie with a witty script, nonstop action and a first rate cast. Denis Leary once again nails the bad guy role to a tee and Lambert and Peebles (who starred together in Highlander 3) make for a great buddy team.

        But I cannot recommend this movie to you on DVD. I waited so long for this to be released only to be dissapointed by the lack of OAR. Even the cover art is horrid. I mean I don't remember any volcanos in the film.

        Stay away from this DVD. Stick with your VHS. It is of the same quality.

          Description

          Not so much a spaghetti Western as a Gazpacho Western, from Spanish director Eugenio Martin, starring Telly Savalas, very funny and effective as the charismatic Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa. The story follows Villa's campaign to overtake General Goyo and thus take over the Mexican government, along the way invading the land of the "gringos" to replenish his weapons. Largely played for laughs, Pancho Villa wanders here and there, but remains fairly entertaining throughout. Chuck Connors deserves special mention as the martinet Colonel Wilcox, who at one point has a mess tent full of officers chasing a single fly, because, you know, a dirty army is an inefficient army. Connors receives the best entrance of anyone in the film: an extreme close-up profile of his enormous chin. It's Colonel Wilcox's single-minded zeal that results in a two-train head-on collision at the film's finale that would make Gomez Addams envious. --Jim Gay

          The poorly written,weak story line, and lack of direction left me with a strong feeling that I truly wasted my time watching this movie. Good actors with poor acting didn't help either. I think that the director must have been out of town that week.

          I wasn't expecting a comedy when I first saw this movie so I couldn't believe how wild and weird this movie turned out to be. Once it was over, and I accpeted it for what it is, I watched again and loved it. It's fun and funny and the finale is fantastic. Just don't expect it to be realistic.

          Savalas, Walker, and Connors are excellent in this very goofy and often extremely laugh inducing comedy about Pancho Villa's invasion of the United States. This is one of the most insane films I have ever seen! Enjoy the cast and the wacky stuff, but don't even try to take this movie serious. It's truly a camp classic! Telly is phenomenal!

          Quite simply put, this is the silliest movie I've ever seen. There are no characters, only characatures; virtually nothing is believeable. The Army officers are all boobs; the enlisted men are stupid beyond comprehension. There is nothing other than the names of Villa, the 13th Cavalry, and Columbus, New Mexico to connect this fiasco to the real world, and Mexicans are portrayed in the most condescending and stereotyped fashion imaginable. The attempts at humor are at best amateurish and at worst infantile.Why anyone wasted the time, money, and resources to make this film is incomprehensible; I needn't mention acting talent because there isn't any. At least the film appears to be properly exposed in most sequences. Don't waste your time!

          Read any online movie review and chances are you will find at least one writer who carps endlessly about the various historical inaccuracies of such and such film. As though that is the end all and be all criteria for a good period film. Well, I imagine such a person would have a field day with this version of Pancho Villa starring Telly Savalas. The only problem is no one would care. Simply put, Pancho Villa is a jokey and light-hearted action film. At least it tries to be. In actuality, it's slow-paced and only mildly diverting. As portrayed by Telly Savalas, Villa is a boorish, self-centered bandit recently deprived of his hair while held captive by nemesis General Goyo(Antonio Casas). Clint Walker plays his American friend Scotty, who goes to Columbus, New Mexico to buy arms for Villa. Double crossed by the dealer, Scotty barely survives an ambush and makes it back to Villa to report the bad news. Ever the glory seeker, Villa comes up with the brilliant idea to cross the border into Columbus to get revenge, except do it under the guise of a military invasion. From there, all sorts of hijinks and gunplay ensues, including a game of chicken between two trains manned by Villa and Chuck Connors as a wild-eyed, spit-and-polish, calvary colonel. Plenty of noise, but curiously little energy. Savalas and Connors duel with each other in the scenery chewing department, hamming up their respective roles as if it were their last. 'Ol Telly even gets to sing the closing song over the credits! And director Eugenio Martin would redeem himself for this film and the excreable Bad Man's River with Horror Express. Some kudos go the DVD by MasterTone, which has a fairly clean looking print and letterboxed it to boot. Certainly as good as I've ever seen this movie.
